Monday scent of the day 11/20

Posted by Robin on 20 November 2023 164 Comments

It's Monday and World Children’s Day. RIP Rosalynn Carter. What fragrance are you wearing?

I had a busy Sunday and am behind on the weekend comments...I will try to catch up by tonight! Meanwhile, I'm looking at a busy morning and probably won't manage fragrance until the afternoon so I'll check in then.

Reminder: on 11/24, pick your Black Friday poison: wear the last fragrance you bought, wear a cheap thrill, or wear a fragrance you love but refuse to buy in a full size because it's too expensive. (We've done this project several times.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing a perfume that is both a cheap thrill and one of my most recent purchases, Shiseido Memoire. I picked up an 80 ml bottle for only $35, which, in perfume math, is practically free. Memoire is a very light, sweet, powdery floral. it does not last long on me, but at the price, who cares? I get maybe a couple of hours, after which I can either reapply or switch to something else.

In perfumath it *was* free, or they paid you to take it off their hands, howsoever you prefer to look at it 🙂

Thank you all for your birthday wishes during the weekend. They lifted up my spirits and put a smile on my face. I spent the day by myself, as expected. It was very soothing and relaxing.

Wearing Serge Lutens Daim Blond. I have not worn it in a long time, so I am really enjoying it on this sunny but very cold day.

    Happy Monday! ☕️

Very fun! Sinatra-like crooner, Sal Valentinetti, America’s Got Talent winner, has a remarkably mature stage presence (and voice!) for a 28-year old, and guest tenor Jonathan Cilia Faro, who sounded like Pavarotti. A very Italian night!

Morning! SOTD is Cuir de Russie extrait. No explanations, I just went through my shelf and started sniffing bottles until one felt right, and this one did.

Had a lovely weekend attending a lace guild meeting in the city and learned the basics of needle lace. I was new to the guild so it was socially exhausting but still rewarding. The teacher was lovely and I have a newfound appreciation for handmade needle lace now!

Was lying in bed last night when for no reason whatsoever, SL Vetiver Oriental popped into my head. Good enough reason to wear it today. As delightful and rich as I remember. 😊

The wind was ferocious yesterday and last night, got a little rain, and now it’s all blue skies and sunshine again. I’m finishing my coffee watching as T-Rex sits outside, captivated by road runners scampering from bush to bush. Meep Meep!

Finally decided on a location for Christmas and after fumbling around in their website was finally able to snag a nice spot. It’s in Arizona in the middle of some lofty saguaros, which I’m looking forward to. Not a free site, but it’s Christmas, so I’m going with it! 🎄

    Happy Monday!

I forgot what the CP was so I am inadvertently wearing a cheap thrill, Roberto Cavalli Oro. I got my bottle on clearance at TJMaxx years ago. The plastic snake was broken which brought the price below $10. I learned about Oro from Gaia at The Non Blonde, really enjoyed her blog.

Sampling Aura Perfume Gwen today. Was wracking my brain trying to figure out what it reminded m…went to Fragrantica and saw the dupes…BAM…dead ringer for Sensual Orchid.

Side note: I googled if it is wrack or rack for brain and they appear to have been used so interchangeably either is acceptable at this point. I feel like I have seen wrack in print historically so that is what I went with. 😉 🧠

Regardless or Irregardless – it irks me to see irregardless even though it is now “acceptable”

The worst — since when is sandalwood spelled as “sandlewood”? I kept seeing this on Instagram and I DMd the person. She refused to change it because she is convinced that she’s spelling it correctly. Google it!

“Woah” drives me up the wall.

The worst thing is when you spell something correctly, and someone else tries to “correct” your spelling, especially when they are rude about it. I had someone do that to me online when I had said something about Tabasco sauce. This person insisted it was “Tobasco”.

You know, I’m going to go with wrack, too. The same dictionary also says, “to torture; distress acutely; torment:
His body was racked with pain.”
But that just seems wrong to me.

I am strongly of the opinion that it must be ”wrack”, even though I’ve done the same research and there’s no authority that will definitely back up my opinion.

When I see “rack”, I just think of a physical object and it’s always jarring.

Words are so funny! Whenever I see “rack” I think of a literal torture rack used in medieval times. I’m not sure why I associate that with “racked my brain” other than pain, distress, etc… And why is that image at the forefront of my mind? No clue except maybe I read about medieval torture devices as a child and it made a huge impression on my little sheltered mind…

To anyone in the Seattle area who enjoys shopping at Essenza in Fremont, I just got an email that the owner is closing the store at the end of the year. It’s been open 25 years, so I am sure there are other fans here too.
I usually do some Christamas shopping there for my mom and myself, and it is my go-to place to buy baby shower gifts, sniff candles and niche scents and gawk at the jewelry.
    Bummer!

Oh no! I used to like stopping in there when I was in Seattle, as well. I got a nice honeysuckle soliflore on sale there many years ago, and I seem to recall that she used to carry L’Artisan Parfumeur so I think maybe I got my bottle of Dzing! there.

Very sad news. I go there at least once a week to hang out with the great folks who work there (my office is in the neighborhood). For the last several years on Christmas Eve, I bring bubbly and apps for a festive celebration after they lock the doors and head out for the evening. Like many small shops, it’s a small community in and of itself.

Wearing Stella today because Hilary Mantel mentioned Stella Rose Absolute in the article Robin posted below our daily poll. I never got to try the Absolute, and when I found this fairly inexpensive Stella roll-on at a discount site, it was also already discontinued.

Has anyone tried Pierre Guilllaume La Nuit de l’Orchidee? It sounds quite interesting – the below is from osswaldnyc’s website:

Pierre GUILLAUME offers to the skin the vertigo of a liquid leather: the scent of black pods struck by lightning on a stormy night.

NOTES: Spices, Vanilla Orchid, Amyris, Leather.

I read an article years ago that said Vera Wang created a business empire wearing black leggings every day.

I wear leggings every day, with a hoodie and allbirds or birkenstocks. I have from 5 dollar to cashmere ones for winter.
And I am now 70.5 and got my nose pierced at 70.

I’ve found Medicare itself to be pretty good, although the amount of information to be waded though is daunting.
PSA: I recently used a federal program called SHINE (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone.) It’s a free service, and they have volunteers to help with questions on Medicare, and to give guidance on choosing plans. I highly recommend them!

Ann, I believe every state has a group of volunteer advisors that help with Medicare questions (it’s a great program called SHIP which stands for State Health Insurance Assistance Program). The name of it depends on the state — for Massachusetts, it’s SHINE as you mentioned, for Wash state, it’s SHIBA, etc. I’ve included the link below for anyone interested. You can click on the orange button in the upper righthand corner that says “find local Medicare help” and it will provide a list of all the states so you can click and find phone and website information for your particular state.

I’m wearing the opposite of a cheap thrill, Guerlain’s new Vanille Planifolia extrait. Will give it the hajusuuri full 8 sprays to see if I can get a better feeling about it. With one spray it is quite meh, even thought it’s an extrait. All the others were more dramatic from just one spritz.

The heritage roses in the cemetery are at their very best just now, all freshly blooming and some incredible colours. Unfortunately, they’re not labelled ( with one or two exceptions) but they are listed. I’ve been trying to identify which one is the Anna Olivier rose ( a peachy, pink tea rose) from a copy of a watercolour done in the 1890s that I have. I know it’s there and think I have it correctly identified but might have to contact the heritage rose society for its location. It’s still cold so the smell isn’t very strong yet but in a few more weeks it will gather strength. Wearing Chypre Mousse again…I don’t really “ do” Black Friday, as we don’t have Thanksgiving.

I have been reading but not posting so much.

It was two weeks ago on a Sunday evening I went to have dinner with an old friend, we met at Disney 20 some years ago. She had her first long awaited baby the week before the world shut down for Covid and I didn’t see him till he was 18 months old.

We truly live at opposite ends of Los Angeles, so we met up in Pasadena for dinner – kind of the middle.

Her dad was in the hospital and he died the next evening. She was there in time to be with him. So the past two weeks have been a blur of driving to help with her now almost four year old, and help with services. Her mom died when she was just in her early twenties, so she has not had it easy.

I did wear Indochine for the memorial service, other than that – nada.

So, cheap thrills…indulge me for using perfume math on this one.
I got an email from Indigo Perfumery showing three new fragrances from HIMA JOMO. So, I actually bought five samples for 20.00 instead of blind buying a bottle. Such restraint, I know.
Yesterday I tested Winter to get my RVS or RSV vaccine and it’s a pass.
Today I have on Pashm. OMG, it’s calling to me. It smells like being in the Himalayas.

Thanks, Robin. Sadly, her husband is more of the kidsit than parent your child. I just keep my mouth shut and play with trains on the floor with the little one.

One good memory she did have a destination wedding in Kaui 11 years ago and her father was there to dance the first dance with her and be there when to see his first and only grandson.

She wore Aromatics Elixer, we sprayed it on her something blue hanky and she carried it with her bridal bouquet. (her moms’ bottle, kept in her night drawer all these years)

Today would have been my Mom’s 93rd birthday. I’ve been thinking of her all day.

I was either very motivated or very masochistic earlier this afternoon and decided to go shopping for jeans. I have lost 3 sizes over the past year. Got very lucky and found 2 pairs for under $30 at Kohl’s! And one of them was a Silver Tab Levi style, no less.

However, any savings there was eaten up (pun INTENDED) at the grocery store. Sigh. Win some, lose some.

SOTD = back in Heeley Eau Sacree, and fitting in with the CP just fine. A full bottle is too rich for my budget.

SOTD: L de Lolita Lempicka, because my order of a BUB arrived today. Would have been a real cheap thrill back in the day, I think, but now it’s just tolerably affordable when compared to the price of niche and luxury fragrances these days.

All packed up to head to my parents late tomorrow after work. I’ll be commando once I get there as they’re not perfume fans.
