Tuesday scent of the day 11/7

Posted by Robin on 7 November 2023 215 Comments

It's (Teapot) Tuesday and National Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day. Birthdays: Ruby Hurley, Albert Camus, Al Hirt, Joni Mitchell. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in vintage Shiseido Féminité du Bois, which I meant to wear last week but just finally found this morning. Tea at the moment is a mix of Numi Chinese Breakfast and Numi Golden Chai, with an extra sprinkle of nutmeg.

Reminder: 11/10 is Neil Gaiman's birthday. If you read (or watched) Good Omens, maybe scent Aziraphale or Crowley? Or scent some other favorite Gaiman work, or just wear a fragrance that you think fits any fantasy, science fiction or graphic novel or movie/show of your choice (it doesn't have to be by Gaiman).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows the Cobbler's Cove Camelot teapot by Royal Crown Derby ("Fine bone china made in England, commissioned for Cobblers Cove. The Camelot collection designed in collaboration with Sam de Teran for the luxury boutique hotel reflects the tranquillity and charm of the Caribbean setting. The striking pink and green patterns create a vibrant dinnerware setting or tea service..."), $288.

Scent: Isabey La Route d’Emeraude for CP points.

Today I picked my favorite short story by Neil Gaiman, A Study in Emerald. Gaiman himself described it as “Lovecraft/Holmes fan fiction”. Highly recommended if you are a fan of Conan Doyle’s stories about Sherlock Holmes or Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. Or both, although stylistically it is much closer Sherlock Holmes – almost like an affectionate parody.

You can read A Study in Emerald for free on Gaiman’s website in a cool Victorain newspaper format – https://www.neilgaiman.com/mediafiles/exclusive/shortstories/emerald.pdf

It is a fine white floral scent, isn’t it? At some point, it becomes kind of cloying to my taste, but only briefly.

Hello, in Paris-Riveria again and smelling lovely. I just got done filling the atomizers for the 1957 split. And somehow I sprayed some right in my mouth lolol. At least it wasn’t
the eye lol (which I have done before lol). At least I will have nice breath? Lol. They will be shipped in small boxes as I could not put her in a padded envelope. Not that I wouldn’t pack it right but idk I love this scent so much..she looked weird in an envelope lol. So those will go out soon, I appreciate those who decided to participate ❤️.

National Bittersweet Choco & Almond Day? That is speaking my language lol. I might have to celebrate 🍫.

Fem du Bois is a nice one! I haven’t drank much tea lately, I am sure as it eventually gets cold here lol, that will change. One of my fave warm up teas is Bengal Spice by Celestial Seasonings:) Yummy 🐈

Still sporting Coromandel over here, and loving it. I once read about a magazine editor who, before meetings, would spray it into her hands, then press her hands to her face. I tried it and liked that method of application. If you ever used the skin care line they used to have-there was a nighttime treatment that had a lot of frankincense and I loved that scent-think it was called LE Nuit.

In our office I have never once had one good cup of coffee and I’ve never had one bad cup of tea. We make it in the vintage pyrex coffee pot, with the coffee filter removed. Someone drifts down to the kitchen at ten and again at two and we stop for tea 🙂

Every place I have ever worked where there was an established tea or coffee break time when most of the employees gathered to touch base and relax a bit, had a better atmosphere than all the places that did not have this sort of tradition.!

It does wonders for morale, and I think it matters that the president of the little company is also a person who makes the tea-keeps things real, and we actually exchange a lot of information. It’s a nice tradition, and people take turns buying cookies or something to go with tea. Does a lot to smooth things over, too, if necessary lol.

Happy Teapot Tuesday! @Robin your tea of the day sounds delicious.

I’m being boring and wearing Coromandel AGAIN. Not sure why but that’s all I want to wear nowadays. Definitely not bored of it yet!

I was trying to get into my tobaccos for the season but they aren’t calling to me at the moment. I have Chergui, Vanille Havane and Ambre Narguile, all lovely and fragrant when I wear them but somehow not the right ones for the mood I’m in. Choosing perfumes is such a mysterious process.

Perfumes are like people. They have different personalities. It can be hard choosing who you want to hang out with the whole day, or who might rub off on you.( good or bad) Coromandel must be being a good friend to you atm.

    Hello all!

Running a bit late in Santa Maria Novella Marescialla, an explosion of spice and resin. Smells like a crazy tonic that might kill you or save you. My local store has the line on clearance and I couldn’t resist. 😅

I watched this incredible clip of Sir Patrick Stewart talking about Vivian Leigh on Conan O’Brien’s podcast. And I normally wouldn’t share just that but there is an anecdote of her perfume towards the end. A really lovely clip of you have time.

I am not familiar with Gaiman’s work, so I am going with a broader fantasy/sci-fi theme. I figure classical mythology fits the theme, as it not only has fantasy elements itself, but has been used as a basis for many fantasy films, so SOTD is DSH Pandora. This stuff is so good, every time I wear it I wonder why I don’t wear it more often.

    *** FREEBIE ALERT ***
I still have some freebies up for grabs. I need to weed out from my collection those things that I do not and will not wear.

Anyone who is interested, please contact me at Roses_50 in the land of yahoo to work out details. Please note that the alphabetic part of my email address precedes the numbers (the opposite of my screen name). I will ship within the CONUS only.

I have available for free, to a good home, the following:

    Decants:

Vintage Gres Cabochard EdT. I don’t know its exact age, but it was among my grandmother’s things when she passed away in 1983. I have about 40 mL more to offer for decants. I can decant into the following types of vials:
    5 ml clear glass spray
    10 ml clear glass spray
    15 ml cobalt glass spray
    30 ml amber glass splash

    Full Bottle:

Crown Perfumery Crown Bouquet, 50 mL EdP spray, full, bought second hand, unknown age.

Well, I jinxed myself yesterday talking about how the time change did not disrupt my sleep as expected, because it caught up to me last night. I fell asleep immediately only to wake up a few hours in and then toss, turn, and try not to let my mind race worrying about *all the things.* Of course I was sound asleep when my alarm went off. Already plotting my afternoon coffee, which will probably backfire on me tonight.🤪 It’s a vicious cycle.

Wearing Shalimar body cream that I applied last night before bed, will probably apply more this morning because I’m a dried up raisin in the sun down here.

It was 88F here yesterday. Sadly, I’m in holding pattern until I can get T-Rex’s thyroid meds from Walmart. After gallivanting all around the west and picking up prescriptions at a nearby Walmarts for 5 years without a hitch, yesterday Walmart had an issue. On the phone all morning with prescribing vet in WA, the previous Walmart pharmacy, also in WA, and the local Walmart here (Roswell, NM) who refused to fill it, the reason being “the system won’t let me do it.” Round and round we went. 🙄 Finally, the pharmacy here is filling it, but they have to order it because it’s not in stock, which I already knew because it’s not an in stock med at any Walmart pharmacy. This is why I (tried to) refill it early here 2 weeks ago…I guess a single hitch in the giddy up over five years is not bad, but really, so frustrating…

That teapot reminds me of my mothers 1980’s kitchen. Lots of good things came out of the kitchen, but also a lot of drama…

Well, really pharmacies are the same as hospitals in that they are chronically (and deliberately) understaffed. The pharmacists are expected to fill hundreds of prescriptions daily, when really they need multiple pharmacists. The techs are also terribly understaffed. I just think “the system won’t let me do it” it a load of hooey, as evidenced by the PharmD here speaking with the PharmD there and then somehow able to fill it. I think the PharmD here must be newer and not familiar with the systems used.

Agree with this – I love the people at the two pharmacies we use. But I can see that their professionalism is…like the way Bilbo Baggins felt after years of having the ring: “I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.”

Yes, it’s so hot though I’m not exploring AT ALL. The temps are supposed to take a dive tomorrow or Thursday as a front comes through. I did pass Bill the Kids grave yesterday and was tempted to stop because of all the drama that has happed to his grave (headstone stolen 3 times, so now the grave is in a metal cage) but it’s just too dang hot! I’ll be making my way over to Las Cruces Thursday, and being that it’ll be cooler I may be more inclined to poke around. I’m kind of making a big clockwise loop around the state but have had to rearrange travel due to weather, reservation systems, and pharmacy issues. When I started this gig you could pull up at any campground (or boondock) and get a same day spot. Nowadays, you have to reserve a spot ahead of time, which does not lend to flexible camping. I don’t really like it and may just start looking for boondocking areas instead. 🤷🏻‍♀️

In Clinique Wrappings today. Yesterday was my mom’s last chemo treatment and she goes back in 2 months for a scan to see how well it worked. But at 4:30, my grandmother’s memory care place called saying that she fell and they were taking her to the hospital. She has a broken hip and they are doing surgery today. My parents will head down to the hospital after spending hours there last night. Good thing that I work in the afternoons and I won’t be sitting in the hospital and obsessing all afternoon.

My favourite Gaiman is “ The Day I Swapped my Father for Two Goldfish” , a book that came with a CD of Gaiman reading the story. It’s such a deadpan , sly and funny story and I recommend it for anyone with 3- 6 year old kids in their life. Gaiman’s voice is perfect.
Wearing Immortal Beloved as I sprayed it prior to thinking of a book, and it’s nice for another gloomy grey day.

I’m in Falling Trees by Regime des Fleurs today and retrofitting it to the CP with the movie Avatar since the Na’vi people try to protect their trees and land, but they cannot stop some of the trees from falling as part of the destruction. Really, I wanted to wear it today because I saw a good deal on a partial bottle and wanted to wear it one more time before deciding if I want to buy it. And I really do love it. It’s so simple – the smell of freshly fallen cedar trees. Or more commonly smelled by me, freshly cut cedar used to make a fence, especially when the fresh wood is exposed to water or heat and the scent rises heavily.

I opened my perfume cabinet this morning and Angel Muse had her hand up, so that’s my yummy sotd.

A young perfumista in the making is bringing over some vintage fur coats for me to try on. They belonged to the grandmother of a mutual friend who just wants them to go to good homes, they are free. I know wearing fur can be a hot button issue but all my winter coats are way too big and a free warm coat would be nice. I have some vintage Chanels out for my friend to sample.

I have a mink stole that belonged to my grandmother. I don’t know what to do with it. We don’t get a lot of chilly weather here, but we do get some, and a stole would be wearable in weather too warm for a full coat, but I don’t want to get tangled up in any in any confrontations. I have thought of seeing if perhaps a theatrical group could use it in their wardrobe.

Wearing Gourmand Coquin today. 🥰 I bought this bottle in 2022 and haven’t worn it in a while…definitely think it smells richer/better than when I first got it. Do you all believe in maceration? 😉 I do and seem to be noticing it lately as I break out autumn scents.

Curious how similar/different Feve Gourmande will be.

Yesterday I had a follow-up callback test for a screening I had last month and, after a fretful hour, was given the all clear. 😮‍💨 😅 …was very relieved. I wasn’t worried about the callback in the weeks leading up but it was hard in that hour to remain calm…I practiced my box breathing which is pretty helpful if you have never tried it. 🔲 ☺️

I caught a perfume reference in the wild the other day. My husband had tuned the satellite radio in our car to the 40’s station, and a song came on called “Red Silk Stockings and Green Perfume.” I don’t know whether the song is meant to refer to a perfume in the green olfactory category, or a perfume that was green in color, or something else. It seems the song was written in 1946, and first recorded in 1947, the same year Vent Vert (which is generally considered to be the first “green” perfume) was released.

I think Mitsouko is classified as a fruity chypre. I was wondering if the concept of a “green” perfume was around in 1946 or earlier. I don’t know if the song could be alluding to Vent Vert, since it seems the song was written before the perfume hit the market. Of course, some perfumes are actually green in color, rather than the more typical amber, and I’ve had a couple of those.

I do not think I have tried the Upton Holiday Chai…or if I have, sorry to say I don’t remember it. I do have their Christmas tea which is a spiced black with rose petals, prominent flavors cinnamon and clove…quite good. It is heavily spiced but still mostly tea, whereas most chai mixes are so much spice that I mix in more plain black tea just to get enough tea flavor + caffeine.

I got some very good news today from the veterinarian. We have a cat we adopted from the shelter a year ago. He had multiple issues–gum problems, tapeworms, chronic nasal congestion–but the most devastating was that he tested positive for feline leukemia (FeLV). The only one of these things we were aware of when we adopted him was the congestion. The shelter does not test for FeLV, and they didn’t mention the tapeworms or the gum issues.

At his first visit, the veterinarian recommended that we surrender him back to the shelter, since he had so many issues. Well, that was not going to happen. We were determined to try to help him as much as possible and make whatever time he had as happy as possible. The congestion resolved within a few weeks of us bringing him home; he had surgery to remove his back teeth due to the gum issues; it took several rounds of treatment to get rid of the tapeworms, but we finally knocked them out. Today he had an appointment for his vaccines and exam and to retest him for the FeLV. The test came up negative! Everything checked out well–heart, lungs, eyes, ears, etc. Leo is the sweetest, most affectionate cat we have ever had, and I so want him to be able to have a long, happy life.

Aww, good on you for keeping him and helping him to get strong enough to live his best possible kitty life! Seems strange that a shelter wouldn’t give an adoptable kitten a thorough exam..? But, I remember when I got T-Rex, who on the second day began coughing so hard she was exhausted and could hardly catch her breath. Like a limp noodle exhausted! I was so worried about her, but it must have been viral and she was young enough to be very susceptible. It was a terrible 24-48 hours though. I did have some meds from the vet, but she was just so sick and miserable. ☹️

They were rather deceptive about the congestion. I saw that he was sneezing, but they made it sound as if he had only been that way for a week or two and was being treated for it. I didn’t learn until after I took him and got a look at his medical history that he had been being treated for a couple of months, not a couple of weeks. That shelter does not test for FeLV. I’m not sure about the tapeworms; we didn’t spot them until a few weeks after we got him, so I can give them a pass on that. The gum issues must have been apparent, but I didn’t try prying his mouth open there in the shelter to check. OTOH, if I had known how many problems he had, I likely would not have chosen him, and I am very, very glad we do have him.

In my experience, cats seem to heal from something known as “kennel cough” within the time frame you mentioned..about 3 weeks once they get out of a shelter. Sometimes they prescribe meds, sometimes not. Very common to see sneezy/weepy/congested kitties at the shelter. Most just need to get the hell out of dodge to a home. I haven’t tried it yet..but heard lysine can help with respiratory..I think they sell it at Petsmart and the like.

Yay LEO!!! Gosh, this warmed my ❤️. I am a huge cat lover. Thanks so much for taking in Leo and caring for him. That shelter seems shoddy though..I would think they would test for such things idk. I volunteered for shelters, SPCA, cat reduces. Unfortunately, respiratory issues are common in shelters, and yeah, tapeworm/ringworm and feline leu wouldn’t be uncommon to see. These would be diagnosed with a simple exam. Sounds like he was neglected but not anymore! So glad he found loving home ❤️

I’m guessing your Leo will have a long and happy life. Our elderly “grandma Muffin” has had bad teeth since she was young, but as they have been removed, she just carries on. One of her front fangs disappeared one day on its own. The vet said no problem. Of course we paid several hundred dollars to have the first one removed.

Yay for you and Leo! Behold the power of love. 😍

We adopted 2 kittens during Covid who were found living on the street in Mexico in bad shape and ferried back to the U.S. The rescue place did a very good job helping them get to the point of being adoptable. They had some health issues and challenges to start but are both hale and hearty now. 🐈 🐈‍⬛

I will be in VCA Bois d’Iris because Kris mentioned it above. I seriously have to get moving. I’ve just spent an hour happily zoning out surfing the net, but can’t do that all day. Finished yoga, now laundry and then yard work.

I made a delicious beef stew last night — the recipe calls for 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar which I think adds a subtle but nice complexity.

Today was a Noa day, I love it and LouLou too but was not impressed by Yes, I am, and a flanker I smelled last year was vile, don’t remember what flanker so it keeps me from trying its other flankers. Tonight it’s Femme de Mont Blanc edp.

The little 30ml bottles are adorable. I thunked one and then moved up size, for someone with a large collection I wear it a lot.

I tested the chocolate flanker of Yes I Am. It didn’t really leave an impression. I do not like the bottles. The Noa bottle is beautiful. I never wore it but bought it for my friend back when it came out.

More Chanel Boy EdP for me today. I’ve gone through at least 5 ml of samples, and I am pretty sure a bottle is going on my Xmas wish list.
When Chanel switched the Exclusifs line from EdT to EdP formulations I was bummed, but now I found that I much prefer the Boy and Jersey EdP formulations. The lavender is less sharp, and has a lovely, rounded quality that has my heart.

Yesterday’s root canal couldn’t be completed because my regular dentist couldn’t find the rest of the canals, so today I went to an endodontist and he fixed me. He also found another tooth in need of a root canal, but it can wait a bit. I am massively relieved that it’s done. I am taking it easy in Narciso White Cube.

Oh no. I”m very sorry. Even though I have SOME dental insurance I still had to shell out an awful lot for the last time I got a root canal. It’s too bad you’ll need another one.

Dental insurance doesn’t cover much more than preventative care and fillings. I stopped paying for it years ago but it just wasn’t worth it. 🦷

Some dark chocolate-covered almonds sound delicious!

It’s Election Day here in the US. I went and voted around lunchtime. Nothing particularly contentious on my ballot this time.

Then I started packing things from my closet. It’s looking rather sad and mostly empty right now, but the attic access is in it, and I don’t want insulation falling down on my clean clothes. We have a home inspector coming by in the near future.

I will put some clothes back after the home inspection is done.

SOTD = commando, except for Dame Perfumery Osmanthus body butter in the usual spots. Wasn’t feeling the Gardenia today.

I don’t remember posting any recipes for black eyed peas. I have mentioned Campfire Casserole in the past, which uses black beans in lieu of black eyed peas. Was that it?

Lunchtime voting twins with Jalapeno – SotD for Election Day is Jean Patou Ma Liberte. Wow is this a beauty and a dab or six will last all day and give a nice scent bubble. I went with edt from my mini (and lavender lovers should stalk Ebay for one of those) but I have and love the edp, too. Happy Birthday Miss Joni Mitchel. I would just like to say that in my decided opinion, the top 5 highest earning woman singer-song writers at the moment are probably waking up at night wishing they had Joni’s talent, artistry, musicality and were also poets. And I bet she like bittersweet chocolate almonds, too.

I’m a big Neil Gaiman fan, but wasn’t thinking about the CP when I chose it this morning. Nonetheless, I’m taking Stardust points based on the AG copy alone:
“When day slips beneath the first veils of night …” “enchanting” “makes us await the dusk ever more impatiently.”

I’m late checking in because I had a lot of commitments today. This morning I chose to wear some dabs of L’Heure Bleue because I saw it on my bathroom countertop. I was sparing because I was about to head off to my painting class. The rationale is that I connected it via Saint Expert to The Little Prince which is a fantasy that I think qualifies for this week’s CP. I don’t ever read Sci-Fi though I did in my past and I even met some bigwigs like Harlan Ellison and others but that’s a story for another day.

My best friend’s kitty has had repeated vet visits for his lung problem and congestion and he just isn’t eating despite many treatments, so he has come home to be with her until it is his time to cross over the Rainbow Bridge. I’m so sad for her. He’s one of those incredibly gentle and sweet, loving ginger and white boys, and very fluffy. She rescued him when he was a mess of a street cat at age 2 and now he’s 13. She has other cats, but he is the special one and it’s so hard to say farewell. I wish I could do more and offered to go over but she wants to be alone with him.
