Monday scent of the day 10/30

Posted by Robin on 30 October 2023 203 Comments

It's Monday and Candy Corn Day. RIP Matthew Perry. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Sarah Jessica Parker Stash SJP.

Reminder: on 11/3, we're off to Japan (just in time for Culture Day). Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Japan, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Japan, or that features a Japanese ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Kotoji Stone Lantern, Kenroku-en, Kenrokuen, Six Attributes Garden, Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan, 徽軫石燈籠, 徽軫灯籠, ことじとうろう, 兼六園, けんろくえん, 金澤, 金沢市, かなざわし, 石川縣, 石川県, いしかわけん, 日本, にっぽん, にほん [cropped] by bryan... at flickr; some rights reserved.

    Hello.
Sotd is Ex Nihilo Oud Vendome. The name would suggest a strong oud forward scent but instead it’s a very light oud. It’s sweet, fresh and quite chic.
    So sad about Matthew Perry…
Love all things Japanese, they have such beautiful aesthetics and rich culture. This week should be fun!

VERY sad about Matthew Perry. Was not a huge fan of Friends but I did watch it from time to time, and he just seemed like he had a really rough life.

It is not hard to find beautiful pictures of Japan, that is for sure.

I love that photo up top, it looks very peaceful.

Such a shame about Mr. Perry, after all the work he put into cleaning up his life. He should still be proud of that work, wherever he is now.

Question: Are there any birders and bird enthusiasts here? I am trying to decide if i should get one of those suet feeder thingies for my back porch. My feeders broke and I wonder if it’s a good substitute or the little piggies I mean birds would just destroy it within a short time. They are all coming back for the winter and they’re hungry!

I am not sure what I will be wearing later today, I will probs decide at literally the last minute. i’ll let y’all know tomorrow.

I keep out finch feeders all year round, but have found suet feeders and some of the others attract blackbirds so have stayed away from them.

Seed feeders at my place attract deer and rodents – not good. I use those suet baskets year-round, and get lovely woodpeckers and bluebirds, as well as my favorite tiny birds like nuthatches and chickadees. I put out small amounts of seeds now and then. Obnoxious but charming red squirrels like the suet, too. However, they don’t just camp out on the feeder for it, but stop by for a nosh and head on out. To go on, as Kris said, I do sometimes have swarms of starlings or grackles but they, as do the squirrels, tend to move on in a few days. Do you have Rural King stores in your area? They have the best price on suet cakes; sometimes in the bulk pack but sometimes for the singles!

My husband always had the suet feeders hung very high, from a hook on our garage…nobody could really get to it but the birds, and it was too rickety for large birds to hang on to.

I think the prevailing wisdom now is that you should not feed wild birds at all, in any way. While my husband was alive he was never willing to stop — so much entertainment! and he had trained quite a few birds to eat fruits & nuts off the fence posts while he was standing right next to it — but I have taken down all our bird feeders now. It makes me sad though!

I second the “Not feeding wild birds.” Or any kind of wild animal. It’s usually a death sentence for them. ☠️

I’m wearing CSP Vanille Ambre today, not that I can really tell, because between yesterday afternoon (Molinard Habanita) and this morning my sense of smell decided to take a hike. I can still tell that things have a scent, but I can’t really tell what they are, exactly: no specificity, no particularity. I can’t tell the VA from Voile d’Ambre or Anne Klein II or a dozen other ambers: it’s just sweet warmth, and not much of that. The SL Arabian room spray, which smells potently of roses, just smells like vaguely rosy floralcy. It’s the olfactory equivalent of looking at things through a scrim, or hearing things with earplugs in (or the blathering adults in Peanuts cartoons).

Well, it’ll come back. Probably. Damn you, COVID (shakes fist impotently at nothing).

What a bother! I had a horrible couple of days very much as you describe. Sniffing a bottle of vanilla essence is usually quite nose-singeing, and I could only just detect it.

It might take a bit, but lotions are nice. I mean when you have Covid the lack of smell is made up for by having nice moisturizing creams and such.

Then again, getting up to shower was an accomplishment in itself, when I had it, lol.

Thank you my friends. She had been ill with Parkinson’s for 18 years but had a sudden decline and passed away very quickly. I am happy that her suffering is over although I miss her very much. She was a wonderful mother and shared with me her love of perfume. Her daytime scents were L’Air du Temps and Shalimar, with Bal à Versailles parfum reserved for special occasions & evenings out. We had so many fun times together and were very close. We wore gallons of Giorgio back in the 80’s :-). Her memory is a great blessing.

It got pretty bitter last night, down in the teens. It’s the first time I slept all night with the furnace on. Usually I put it on just before bed and after waking to warm the camper up a bit. This rig is able to stabilize temps pretty well and is fairly airtight. There is some cold transfer around window framing, but that’s to be expected. Nothing like the van where I could feel the cold wind making entrance at every single door and window. Since it was so cold last night I left it on to prevent any frozen plumbing as there is a heat duct into the basement area to prevent tanks and valves from freezing.

Greeted this morning by a huge herd of deer with a massive buck leading the way as they came up from the lake bed and disappeared into the trees. By the time I’d gotten my contacts in, they had already gone. Hope they stay within the confines of the park…

Wearing SL Cuir Mauresque today from the tall black bottle which I hate. The bottle, not the perfume. Two solid spritzes to the décolleté and I should be good for the entire day. 👍🏼

Like all smart migratory birds, we’re headed south today, although I expect to be in freezing temps overnight again. This cold front has really blasted deep into the southern area of this state. 🥶

Stay warm, and hope all the sick folks feel better ASAP!

Well, I must have bad taste because I love those Montalé bottles with the little dangly thing! 😍 I don’t hate the looks of the black bottle, but I DO hate the lack of common sense and functionality. So tippy and easy to knock over. Awkward to use. They weigh about 10 lbs, so when they fall, they’re taking out all their comrades nearby. I hate it almost as much as I hate the Bvlgari Omnia bottle…But somehow, I don’t think SL et al cares about what I think! 😀

I don’t mind the gratte ciel bottles, although the tiny black lettering leads to some interesting mistakes in the morning.

But I agree the 100 ml size with the slab of black covering the bottle-I don’t care for that esthetic at all.

I am in Shiseido Zen (original “black”). We are having our first real cold front of the season. The temps dropped into the 40’s overnight (for the first time since March), and it is currently chilly, drizzly, and windy, so Zen is perfect for a day like this, as it always makes me think of sitting in front of a crackling fire with a mug of hot tea or cider. None of this is a complaint, BTW. Summer way overstayed its welcome this year–a month ago we were still in the 90’s–and we had a horrible drought, so the chilly weather is most welcome, as is the rain.

It does happen sometimes. Of course, the forecast has us getting back into the low 80’s by the weekend. I did enjoy the cold; I actually slept with the covers over me all night long. Usually, the menopausal furnace is running so hot (I don’t know if that is TMI) that I end up kicking the covers off or sleeping half under/half out, or with just a thin sheet over me, because I am too warm. It’s so rare that I feel cold that when I do, I enjoy the opportunity to wear warm clothing or snuggle up under covers.

Yeah, the menopausal furnace has been running full blast for 10 years now and shows no signs of stopping any time soon. It’s not so much hot flashes per se, although I still get those once in a while, but more that I just feel warm all the time. If I’m one of 15 people in a room that is set for some sort of “average” room temp, 10 people will be comfortable, 4 of them will be too cold, and I’ll be burning up. Naturally, my husband is cold natured, so we have to try to find some sort of compromise where he isn’t freezing and I’m not melting.

CdG x H&M today for Rei Kawakubo & the CP. I spent the weekend with sore shoulders and a huge lymph node on the side I had my COVID vaccine on, but otherwise no major effects. I guess the lymph node is evidence that the vaccine is making my body do its job. SO MUCH going on right now…I think the Halloween costume and teen outfit for the wedding are finally taken care of, and I dropped off 87 bags of candy and mandarin oranges with jack o’lantern faces sharpied on at orchestra on Saturday. Still have to get the pumpkins carved tonight, though.

Chilly morning today, I chose to sample 4160 Tuesdays My Eau My, from hajusuuri. It’s a really nice choice for a cold day.

My son has decided he’s too old to go trick-or-treating, so I’m a bit out of it with Halloween this year. I heard the new Poirot Venice movie will start streaming on Hulu tomorrow, so perhaps I will get in the mood by watching it!

Chanel Boy again. After many years of neutral reactions to lavender, I am suddenly a big fan. It may have something to do with the lavender sachets I’ve been using in my closet to repel moths. Or the lavender soap chunks I’ve been storing with my yarn stash (now hermetically sealed in ziplock bags inside of a weatherproof plastic tote container) after the Moth Infestation of 2023. I had to toss 90% of my stash, and I am still reeling from the half disintegrated balls of beautiful cashmere yarn I was going to knit a sweater with this fall. Eaten up by moth larvae. Sigh.

So yeah, loving lavender now. My new best friend.

Another day in Royal Secret. I’d guess there is about 4mls left and I’m putting it on the thunk list. I do love it but it is past its prime along the top. Do any of you keep and display your empty bottles? Since falling down the rabbit hole, I think I’ve emptied only one of something or other, and I tossed it.

I do keep some bottles, for different reasons!
28 La Pausa edt was thunked loooong ago,but I still sniff the sprayer every so often(there’s like a ml or 2 left that just would not come out to play!)
ELDO tester bottles, because of the original art works displayed on them.
I’ll never throw out any from my Mom’s collection I inherited, they’re probably the most important personal items from her I kept(to me anyways…)

Thanks AnnE! Sometimes you have to distract yourself with a good fragrance to get through.

I hand-washed the windows with a small bit of liquid soap (dish soap or something similar) and warm water mix; then squeegee it mostly off. I then sprayed the window with 50/50 mix of water and vinegar and hand-dried with an old lint-free tea towel.

When I was done with the windows, I went back and washed the sills down with the same water/soap mix.

I finished off a sample of Di Ser Kazehikaru for the CP today. Di Ser is a Japanese brand and their perfumes all appear to be inspired by Japan. Here’s what they say about Kazehikaru: Japan’s northenmost territory, Hokkaido is a land of rugged natural beauty, four-season weather, and pioneer spirit, where the winds blow strong and free. It’s the scents carried on that wind that inspire Kazehikaru, the native flowers and trees of Hokkaido’s rocky coastlines and towering, forest-covered mountains, a collection of flora that teems with vibrant, wild beauty- a distinctly Japanese combination of refinement and energy.

It can read a bit cleaning product at times in the early stage but is overall a pleasant astringent citrusy scent with yuzu, neroli, shiso, and vetiver among other notes.

In a couple hours I’ll be getting my flu shot and the latest Covid booster. I took tomorrow and Wednesday off (not just for this purpose) so should have plenty of time to rest and recover if my previous COVID shots are indicative of this one too.

Claiming a CP point in LAP’s À Fleur de Pêche. On me it smells like a just ripen peach cut in half, with a cup of jasmine tea.

Today’s tea is a strong malty black tea called Celebration that has tiny lucky-charms style marshmallows mixed in. Ridiculous, but fun.

I was ready to make some purchases from Indigo today to take advantage of their anniversary sale, but every bottle I was considering was already sold out. ☹️ You snooze, you lose I guess.

I like that it is a delicate peach note with just a bit of sweetness/juiciness. Some of the other peach frags I’ve tried lately are too over-ripe or syrupy for me.

I’m checking in very late to report my CP scent, which is Keiko Mecheri Ume. I forget to wear this but it’s a very pretty scent. Yesterday I got my second Shingles shot. I’ve been lazy today but the reaction isn’t too bad, except for a sore arm. Our weather changed drastically overnight and has been very gloomy. My cats are keeping close.

Thanks for concerns about my friend’s cat Morton. He’s still at the vet and still battling pneumonia with a high fever. She’s worried. Like me, she has multiple cats—double digits. But he’s her favorite.

As of this morning, we had 3 offers. There might be at least one more coming down the pike. This after 3 days of showings. Robin, your “offers mojo” is incredibly potent!

I was also feeling “not right” earlier today physically. I wonder if I am coming down with something. I had been in 2 crowded restaurants over the weekend… So I have brought out the Emergen-C and will be drinking that for a few days.

SOTD = commando, except for Korres Grecian Gardenia on my shins.

Feeling much more like myself this evening, thanks! But I will still do about a week of Emergen-C.

Yeah. Sooner than either one of us expected.

Thank you Kris. I took it easy today. No cooking or cleaning at all.

Congratulations on all the offers! Best of luck through the rest of the process.
I’m sorry to hear that you’re not feeling well, but my body tends to break down a bit after a long period of stress. Hope the C helps, and grab your rest when you can!

I dug out my cold weather OB, Seville a l’Aube, and it hit the spot for me today. Adorable hubby seems to have gotten the irritating drugs out of his system, but he is still having trouble with his digestive system. He won’t get to come until he’s eating food and processing it successfully, so to speak. But, in some essential way, he just looks better,

Very late to the party but made it!

SOTD = Valentino Uomo Noir Absolu EDP

I have a travel size spray from one of the gray market sites. It is wonderful. I have decided to wear Japanese brands (of which I may only have one from a stash I would wear) and/or anything with incense.

    Toodles until tomorrow.
