Thursday scent of the day 10/19

Posted by Robin on 19 October 2023 170 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy International Gin & Tonic Day! Birthdays: John le Carré, Peter Max, Divine, Philip Pullman. PSA: The splitmeet will start on Saturday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I had Persian Jewel plans for today, but instead I'm sick, commando and I've overslept.

Reminder: on 10/20, wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's picks for the Autumn/Winter 2023/2024 NYFW Color Palette. (If you like, click through to the article and pick your fragrance based on the color name or description rather than the color itself, as in "Exuding the warmth and splendor of the sun, High Visibility expresses joy and good cheer." or "Sturdy and steady Burnt Sienna conveys a sophisticated earthiness." Also note that the set includes Viva Magenta, the color of the year...you could cheat and wear what you picked for that project.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hugs, Robin. Hugs with a mask on! This too will pass.
I’m wearing the last drops of vintage Hypnotic Poison on a rainy, dreary day, to be matched with Viva Magenta (“Viva Magenta is an animated red encouraging experimentation and self-expression.”)
I remember when HP first came out, during my years of hauling teenagers to the mall, I was fascinated with that scent, different from anything else I had smelled. I would always spray a little and eventually bought a bottle.

You smell great, Ringthing. I do love the original Hypnotic Poison (and love it better than original Poison and all its and the HP Poison flankers). I went with The Peradam from Apoteker Tepe. I’ve been sniffing my way through the line via a sample pack received in a swap awhile back. Very interesting and unusual stuff.

I haven’t heard of that line before, sounds intriguing! And I didn’t care for the other iterations of Poison, either.

It will pass for sure. I am exhausted — like mono! — but otherwise this is still so much better than last time that I am thankful.

      You do indeed smell fabulous!

Loved the bottle of the original Hypnotic Poison, but the perfume did NOT play nice with my chemistry at all. Such a bummer.

I’m wearing Twilly Eau Ginger from a decant. I had no opinion of Twilly, but I like this variation, probably because ginger is a favorite note. A larger decant may be necessary.

I thought both versions of Twilly were fine, but nothing I really needed to add to my collection.

Burning through the samples I brought with me, and today I’m in my last, and soon to be greatly missed, drops of actual 1981-vintage K de Krizia, one of those big explodey aldehydic florals, but madly complicated in the eighties style, with oakmoss and civet, leather and woods and all manner of things. Spectacular. We shall not see its like again. (At least I still have Clinique Wrappings and Guerlain Vega, which are similar in style.)

Austenfan, you said yesterday that I ought to go to Haarlem, and it just so happens that today we did go there. (We have a three-day pass for unlimited travel in the immediate region and by gum we are getting our money’s worth.) The weather was not very nice, and we headed back to the train station when the rain set in, but we were there for a couple of hours and I quite liked it: it’s a great walking town.

There was a vintage-fragrance store there called Perfumes of the Past, but it was closed while we were there and wasn’t scheduled to open until we had left. The window display did in fact have a lot of things from the eighties and nineties, but some of the boxes were badly faded, which made me wonder about the state of the bottles in them. I sour-grapesed the situation by saying it probably would have been overpriced anyway, and when I went to look online I saw how right I was: there wasn’t anything I would have bought for the prices they were asking. I shouldn’t be surprised, but we all dream of bargains, don’t we?

“We shall not see its like again”, true of so many fragrances!

Glad you are enjoying your trip, and glad you did not get into Perfumes of the Past if it just would have pissed you off 🙂

I’m glad you enjoyed Haarlem (in spite of the weather). I’ve only been there two or three times and always to visit the Frans Hals museum or Teyler’s museum.
My guess is most Dutch cities are good for walking, as most city centers are fairly compact and we don’t have any really big cities anyway.
I don’t know any perfume stores in the Amsterdam area, I’ve bought online at Dany Diop, but have never visited the actual shop. I love Céleste in The Hague, but that would probably be too far for you.

Haarlem is so delightful for walking around. I am on a campaign to convince Mr. Vee that we should move there or to Delft once we retire.

I had a chance to visit Dany Diop in person earlier this year and it is a lovely little shop. Enjoy your trip!

Older son left yesterday to start his permanent (or as permanent as anything is for a 22-year-old) life in Houston. I am marking (mourning!) the move by wearing the lovely No 5 Frenesie by Thomas Kosmala that I purchased in Houston.

    A WARNING: Royalty Scents.

In other news, I am really hoping that I will report tomorrow that the situation is resolved. It turns out that Royalty Scents has been deducting their monthly fee from me from my credit card AND my Paypal account (no, they are not linked). So I overpaid over $330 over the last 15 months or so. Since they only have email for contacting them, I emailed them yesterday morning with the records from both companies, etc etc. assuming that it was an honest mistake and that they would be horrified and reimburse me immediately. So far, radio silence. I will go into high gear tomorrow filing complaints with the credit card company (Mastercard) and Paypal and the BBB if I don’t get a satisfactory response by the end of business today. Grrrrr.

I hope your situation gets resolved quickly!

I have the same thing from Aspen’s Jewelers, although just Amex. When I first noticed it, I wasn’t quite sure what it was and called Amex to dispute it. Amex wanted me to change to a new credit card and I said no, so they placed a block on the vendor. 4 months later, there was another charge and another call from me. This time they used a different vendor code and the charge passed. I’ve decided that I will just keep calling whenever I see a charge. It has been 3 months and so far so good.

I hope Houston life works out happily for your son and that you can talk regularly. I was so despondent but ‘ brave and happy for him’ when my son moved out “permanently” (and so happy when he moved back home two years later!).
Hope you can sort through the double-dipping. Yuck.

And yes, yuck indeed. Fingers crossed it was an honest error and the company will be helpful.

Sounds amazing. Are the stacks in the basement? Our library used to have open stacks and I was constantly amazed by the books, and how old some of them were. And also loved looking at the old date slip cards to see when they were last issued.

I remember doing that at my first job at the public library, removing books that hadn’t been borrowed recently. The very first book I picked up hadn’t been borrowed since 1951. It was first into the discard bin.

I’m in Nahema, both the parfum and the EDP. I once wore this during a family member’s final illness and heavn’t worn it since. I still remember the scent of passionfruit and sandlewood as I vacuumed the needles off the floor (was Xmas time). It’s beautiful. I have a few drops of the parfum in a Guerlain tester-wish I could have purchased the bottle. It was so beautiful.

Hope everyone’s day is decent 🙂

On my second cuppa coffee, bleary eyed and moving slow. Not sure what kind of perfume vibe I’ll be sporting today. I want to wear some heavy hitters but while the nights and early mornings are quite cool (some might say “cold”), it’s warming up much higher than the predicted low 70’s during the day.

The doggo is loving the weather and being outside all day. She lays on the vibrant outdoor rug in the sun like Cleopatra reclining on her golden, scented barge, surveying her kingdom with eyes half closed in complete satisfaction, nose twitching every now and again when a tantalizing breeze wafts her way.

“Something” made off with her large Kong toy last night as it’s nowhere to be found. She was working on getting the last milk bone out of it yesterday, so I’m afraid that “something else” got the prize. 😳

I’ve decided on Queen, which I haven’t worn in forever and fits the aforementioned “Cleopatra” theme, as decided by Queen T-Rex herself.

    Happy Almost Friday Day!

Hello from my new home! The move went as smoothly as it could and I am enjoying my new place. I’m almost done with unpacking — the perfume shelf went up yesterday so I finally have my whole collection available again 🙂

SOTD is Chanel 1957 to ease into a sense of comfort in new surroundings.

Lots of things happening this weekend! There is a vintage clothing show in Manhattan on Saturday, and I am going to the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Fest on Sunday. Tatting lace and spinning yarn are my two craft hobbies apart from perfume so I am very excited for both events!

    FREEBIE ALERT!!!

I have available for free, to a good home:

vintage Gres Cabochard EdT. I don’t know its exact age, but it was among my grandmother’s things when she passed away in 1983. I just haven’t been able to love this one, but I would like to keep a little of it along with the bottle, so I will offer decants up to about 65 ml.

Vintage Lanvin My Sin EdT. I bought this new in the early to mid 1980’s. I can offer decants of this up to about 20 mL total.

I can decant into the following types of vials:

    5 ml clear glass spray
    10 ml clear glass spray
    4 ml clear glass rollerball
8 ml clear, green, or cobalt glass rollerball
    15 ml cobalt glass spray
    30 ml amber glass splash
    60 ml cobalt glass spray

I currently have only one of the 30 mL amber glass splash, and two each of the cobalt blue rollerballs and 15 ml sprays.

I also still have the freebies I listed on Tuesday:

SJP Covet, 10 mL EdP spray. Received in swap. Cannot tell the exact amount left, as the container is opaque, but seems fairly full.

Jovan Modern Flowers, 1/8 oz. parfum splash, vintage. Nearly full. This is a Jovan scent from the 70s. Purchased from ebay. This is a multifloral scent. It does not seem to be listed in either Fragrantica or Basenotes, and I can find very little info on it.

l’Occitane Roses et Reines,7.5 ml EdT splash, NIB. Bought new. This is pretty much a straight-up rose scent.

Phlur Apricot Privee 2 mL EdP spray, few spritzes missing. Bought new. This is a fruity floral.

No points for me today, or maybe just half a point. I’m in Le Dix EDT over Le Dix dusting powder and I smell fabulous, but the Pantone color that’s closest to a match is one that I really don’t like (that washed-out peach thing). I can make a half-hearted stab at pairing it with Persian Jewel since it has both orris and lilac among its notes, but the verbal description says lapis rather than lilac or iris and to me lapis is far more vibrant than Le Dix’s calm, soothing presence.

Le Dix is beautiful! I think Pantone’s description of the color as “lapis” is off; the visual is definitely a soft violet blue. I had a bottle of Le Dix once that I got in a swap, but I had to swap it away because every time I wore it, I got a raging headache. I have never more regretted having to get rid of a bottle, as it was a lovely scent and I would have very much liked to wear it.

I agree, it is very odd that they are saying that color is inspired by lapis.

I’m sorry you’re still sick Robin. I hope you recover soon. Wearing Ginger Biscuit which could be burnt sienna, or not? Too early to think about it. I’ve just been outside (pre dawn) and the smells are wonderful. My neighbours wisteria is in full flower and almost heady and then there is the Kohuhu, which is a native pittosporum that has tiny, black-purple waxy flowers that are barely noticeable in the foliage but have an intoxicating scent, like daphne and honeysuckle. Very sweet and powdery ( pollinated at night, by moths)

The smells of those flowers sound wonderful.

In 2012 I visited the enchanting Chenonceau Castle, which has two famous gardens. The Diane garden was bordered by Wisteria on one side when I was there and it was in full bloom, so that gorgeous garden in that beautiful location smelled astonishing as well.

    Hello all!

Having a bit of a rough morning but at least I smell good. I’m wearing Nez a Nez Marron Chic, an unusual nutty iris. I don’t wear it often because it’s long gone. It’s so elegant though. I think Iris Torrifie is close but that chestnut note is just incomparable.

For me it’s a comforting scent that reminds me of my mom taking care of me when I was a kid. She died when I was 11, so it’s very comforting to me. But I can totally get where others are put off by it — in fact Ockeghem Teen is complaining about my hoarding of these tissues (we have a shortage of decent tissues here now that Kleenex has pulled out of the country) because apparently I didn’t slather her chest with Vicks as a kid. 😀

    SOTD = Tauer Nexin

Indeed the sought after bottle arrived yesterday and I had it in my hot little hands last night. I have bottle number 7! 🤍🤍🤍

I am pairing this with Pantone Coconut Milk. Upon first spray, it was just the right level of citrus and then it quickly morphed into the kitchen sink in a wonderful way. If you want to know more about the notes that make it up, please look them up in Fragrantica.

The bottle also came in the new packaging. It is nice and compact and I will say quite protective. Here’s Andy discussing it:

The customer service email I received apologized for the delay and offered to cancel and refund my order if I was bothered by the delay !?! I immediately wrote back and told them I most definitely didn’t want to cancel, to please ship no matter how long it takes. Are you getting a lot of vetiver? One of the guys on Basenotes said it was basically a vetiver scent. I sure hope not, vetiver is not my favorite note.

I’m wearing M. Micallef’s Black Sea today, thanks to laurels and our last swapmeet. If this really does smell like Black Cashmere, as ppl on Fragrantica claim, then I understand all the love for Black Cashmere and wish I’d had the chance to try it. I’m getting a great mix of cold winter forest notes, dry spice notes, and a bit of incense, all playing off each other. I’m quite smitten.

Today’s tea is F&M Christmas Black because spice goes well with spice and because I haven’t had it in a while.

I had a good day. After rising late I got ready to go to painting class and we did a lovely woodland scene with trees, a stream, and flowers. Then I went got a mani-pedi and very helpful shoulder massage. This morning I wore my Indigo Smoke. It’s way too dark for Persian Blue but further down on that Pantone site is a perfect match called Eclipse. It looks like a velvet navy. The massage lady used a very pretty rose lotion and I smell “interesting” now.

My big accomplishment for the day was waiting on hold for 45 minutes for a 5 minute phone call.
    Keep resting Robin!

You have 40 more minutes of patience than I do. I hope you were at least able to talk to a live person after that kind of wait…

I knew if I hung up that I would procrastinate calling back. I did get a live and unpleasant person.

Sounds like the day I had Tuesday with Bank of America. Ugh!

Your phone call sounds like so many that my brother had to make when he was dealing with insurance stuff for our Mom. On hold for an eternity for something that should take 5 or 10 minutes otherwise.

Insurance calls are the worst. They have no incentive to be nice.

I never tried anything by OJ even though it’s a British brand I think, hope you had a good day off apart from that phone call, so annoying.

I’m in Iris Torrefie today. I had my nose in a book most of the afternoon yesterday, reading Lessons in Chemistry. It’s for a book club that meets the first week of November, but at the rate I’m going, I’ll finish this with plenty of time to spare.

I cooked beans, made a cake and started fixings for chili in the slow cooker today. Feeling tired, but it was a day well spent. 👍🏻

How are you enjoying Lessons in Chemistry? I liked it quite a bit and looking forward to seeing the film version on Apple TV

I’m loving it! I’m a little annoyed at the cover art, because it makes it look like chick lit, and the book is better than the typical chick lit.
Didn’t know there was a film version coming out. Thanks for the tip!

It’s the end of a long day on the east coast but Seville A L’Aube is still keeping me company since I gave myself three good sprays with it before work this morning. It pairs well with Pantone Red Orange “warm and gregarious orange both spontaneous and self assured”. I still enjoy it after all these years, especially in Autumn and still have about a third of the bottle left.
