Thursday scent of the day 10/5

Posted by Robin on 5 October 2023 118 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy World Teachers’ Day! (And if you're in the UK, happy National Poetry Day!) What fragrance are you wearing?

My silly excuse for wearing Maison Francis Kurkdjian Petit Matin: Kurkdjian also did Burberry Her, and just look at that Burberry hat!

Reminder: 10/6 is Mad Hatter day. Wear your silliest perfume, or come up with a silly excuse to wear whatever perfume you wanted to wear anyway.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Black & Orange Trapper Hat from Burberry ("Insulated nylon taffeta hat in black and orange. Faux-fur trim throughout") is $1350 at SSENSE.

    Hello!
Sotd is Gucci The Voice Of The Snake. A clean oud sprinkled with saffron. Not fecal or nasty-animalic but still pretty powerful stuff. I really like oud so I am enjoying this a lot. I bought this blind and I’d call it a success. 🙂

I had to laugh at today’s picture, the model looks like she has a Chow Chow on her head!

Ha! Haha, as I was scrolling down and caught a glimpse of that picture I had to laugh. I’m sorry, but who wears this stuff?!! And especially at that price!🤯
    Thanks Robin.😂
Anyway, I’m in Gypsy Water. Today is my Friday and I’m currently sitting by an east face window with the sun shining in. Love it. Today is the last of our summer like weather and tomorrow we will drop 20 degrees.

Forgive me Donatella for I have sinned. I broke my no buy and ordered the Victoria Beckham sampler set this morning after seeing it in an email. It was $30 and the price can be applied to a full bottle. I highly doubt I will get one at those prices, but wanted to pass along the info. Not to enable or anything.😉

Day four of my vintage week and I am wearing some vintage no. 5 extrait. No. 5 and I go back a long way, over 50 years, being one of the very first perfumes (along with Arpege) that I remember from my mother’s dressing table. It was one of the first “grown up” perfumes I bought when I was a teen, and I have thunked a number of bottles over the years. It is not a silly perfume by any means, nor do I have a silly reason for wearing it, and I don’t think “no. 5” is a particularly silly name, but I am wearing it anyway.

It’s already a DAY so thank you for the silly picture, Robin!
The electric light pole behind our house fell down yesterday because the wood was rotted at the base. (My husband reported it 3 yrs ago, the power company came out and said yeah, you need a new pole and we never saw them again.)The power was out until late last night and it also snapped the cable for the internet connection, so I spent the morning with our company’s phone bank from across the world where they had to run an internet test to the house – hello, without the cable there’s obviously no service at all! Why can’t you ever talk to someone local? This could have been completed in five minutes, instead it took longer than a very frustrating hour, with a disconnect in the middle of the call. And my mom took both her day and night meds all at once for the 2nd time in a week. 🤦‍♀️
    I promise, rant over.
So, I thought I would wear calming incense today but I need a distraction, so Angel it is. Time for the big guns.

I am very frustrated with the phone auto-bots, that is, if you can find the number to call. I usually have a better experience when I choose the option for fraud, cancelling or for someone with a disability even though I am NOT calling for those reasons.

I absolutely HATE having to call about any sort of service issue (electricity, phone, internet, etc.) precisely because it always takes longer than it should and I always have to deal with someone who doesn’t seem to believe that a problem exists. Yes, I checked the breakers. Yes, ALL the power is out. Yes, I am sure it is out. The whole neighborhood is dark. No, please don’t suggest I go online to “www.wedontgiveadarnaboutourcustomers” to report the internet outage. If I could get online to your website, I would have no reason to do so. Yes, I have tried powering the computer off and and and powering the modem and router off and on–several times, in fact–but OK, I will try it one more time if that will convince you to check things on your end.

The subtlety of that hat is spot on. 😉

We’re a couple miles north of Santa Fe today. We have a couple of days for running around and getting chores/mail done then heading for a two week stint at a state park that has an extensive trail system without a lot of elevation change, so perfect for biking. Really looking forward to that! 🚲

It was wonderfully cool last night with a forecasted high today of 70*F. Perfect! Lots of bright sunshine to boot. I finally feel like I’m getting some energy back, sleeping well at night, and waking up anticipating the day. As Lizzo says, “About dam* time!”

SOTD is Kalemat by Arabian Oud. There is nothing silly about this perfume, so I guess I’m not CP complaint (again!). If I smelled like this 100% of the time for the rest of my life, I’d be quite happy about it.
    Happy almost Friday day!

I got my bottle back when the only reasonable way was to order via Amazon. In any case, the silly thing about that order was the packaging was opulent and the free gifts (2 FBs of some other perfume) were over the top.

We haven’t travelled in four years, and we’re supposed to fly to Paris via Toronto on Saturday evening, but what do you suppose is coming our way? Only a stupid tropical storm (with an ironically French name), that’s all. We spent most of the morning online and on the phone trying to figure out what to do, and Air France will let us change our flights to a different day, but it will cost us $7000 to do so, which is mad. (*And* we’d have to downgrade from premium economy to regular old economy. For that much money!) And we can’t jettison the first flight and fly up a day early, because there’s a punishment fee for that, also in the thousands of dollars. All we can do is show up at the airport on Saturday evening and hope for the best. At least if the flight to TO is cancelled because of the weather, Air France will somehow get us where we’re going, even if it’s a day or two late. Better that than paying fees we can’t possibly afford.

Anyway, I’m in ELdO Nombril Immense, which is not especially calming, but sometimes you just feel like wearing a big fat patchouli scent, I think.

Now I am more than a little irritated at USPS. My little vintage bottle that I ordered on 09/26, was shipped on 09/28, arrived at the North Houston Distribution Center on 09/30, and then spent four days “In transit to the next facility”, has apparently now been sent back to California whence it came. Meanwhile, every single thing that I have ordered that was sent via Fedex or UPS has been delivered in a timely manner without issue.

Scent: Lucy B Pink Frangipani. It might not be entirely silly, but it’s certainly not serious stuff. I have the rollerball, and why I haven’t splurged on a spray is a mystery. (Ok, maybe it’s not a mystery – I get stuck between multiple things I’m interested in and nothing gets purchased.)

The silliest thing I have is probably Moschino I Love Love. I wasn’t quite feeling it this morning, but there’s plenty of time to pull it out.

    Shalimar: Mission Impossible today. 😍

I tried Tobacco Honey yesterday but it did not rock my world. Full disclosure, I am not into oud but the oud is in the background here. To me it’s in the vein of Oud Bouquet…not a dupe but a variation on a theme. It’s much more about the honey than the tobacco and could have been called Honey Tobacco but that name has been used by 3 different houses already according to Fragrantica. 😉 That said, I did enjoy it but wasn’t wowed by the first wearing. A well done, sweet amber w/ an oud base but not that different from other deer in that herd. 🦌

cazaubon’s post reminded me how happy I am to have my fragrance collection back at home after being in storage all summer (to avoid heat). We put up new shelving and it’s so fun to spend time in the perfume fort looking at bottles, sniffing this and that, decorating here and there😊

Bucoliques de Provence, which actually doesn’t smell much like the Provence as I know it.

Today’s hat is properly silly, even Graham Chapman would have been pleased!

Ha, ha yes, re: hat. But it also made me think of Verushka. As in, she would have made it look glam.

Hello hello! I’ve been back from Los Angeles a couple of days now, and finally out from under the laundry. Had a lovely time seeing the girl child, hiking, shopping and beaching. I’m in Hermes Voyage today.

***😊If anyone is interested, I’m swapping my bottle of PG Tonka Bodykon. Give me a shout!

Second day of Diptyque’s L’Eau Trois for me, thanks to a generous decant from a lovely NSTer in the Swapmeet. (Thank you!) This has been on my ‘to try’ list for a long time, and worth the wait. What an amazing incense herbal bomb, feels ancient and mystical, just as everyone has said. I’ve read different things about whether it’s d/c or still available. I also wonder how/if it’s changed since 1975 when it came out. It’s quite warm in Los Angeles, so the incense is blooming beautifully.

For the CP, Insolence. It’s one of my top ten favorites, but I think the name is very silly. Shout out to French speakers: I got an idea somewhere that “insolence” in French does not have the same, and the negative, connotation that it does in English, right? A very welcome rain arrived, though it’s delayed finishing the painting project. I’m catching up on indoor things today, including getting my Swapmeet items ready and in the mail tomorrow. Off to climb the laundry mountain for now.

Well, my no. 5 from this morning has faded out, and my Phlur travel sprays arrived courtesy of UPS and our local post office (thankfully, the north Houston facility had no involvement with this one) so I now have Sandara on one hand and Hanami on the other. These were the two that were not in the sample set, and both of these seem to be nice, quiet scents. So far, I think I prefer Hanami. It lists hazelnut among the notes, and I do get a warm, nutty note in it, although I do not think I could have identified it as hazelnut specifically. Both of them, as well as Ameline, are marked down to half price ($48 for a 50 mL bottle and $13 for a 9.5 mL travel spray), which I suspect is an indication that they are being discontinued, so if anyone was considering one of them, maybe don’t wait too long.

I like the idea of the 9.5 ml travel spray…wish everybody would do it.

If I were to write a caption for the expression on that model’s face, I would be sorely tempted to say “Yay, verily yay.” No exclamation point. The hat is absolutely insane! Wonder how much it weighs?

Kind of yucky with the muggies outside today. I am giving it a pass, since the warm temps are getting ready to vamoose for the rest of the year.

SOTD = again commando, except for Dame Perfumery Orange Blossom soliflore body butter on my shins. Figured I’d try this one out today.

SOTD = American Perfumer Call Me by Diane St. Clair

Holy aldehydes plus musky floral! It’s my first time wearing this limited edition perfume. As with many (most) of her scents, I don’t get any more than what I can smell even though there’s way more in the juice! It has a classic smell and I do love it!

In other news, my niece’s surgery went well, according to my sister. It took almost 2 hours and she will be in the hospital anywhere from 2-5 days. I hope she gets to stay on the longer end not because she needs it but because it will be safer for her due to her blood disorder. Thanks for your well wishes.

I’ve had many errands today plus the furnace guy came. He said he thinks it should get me through the winter. Lol fingers crossed! The weather guy reminded me that last year we saw snow on Oct 17th!
I wore Prada Candy Night today. Not very silly for this blustery day.

Crossed fingers and fie on snow in October! (even though it happens every year somewhere in Canada – just hopefully not Montreal).

In a test spray of AA Granada Salvia from the duty free shop today. I chose it because my trip was to Grenada (event tho Granada and Grenada are not related).

    No tea today 🙁
