Am I allowed to enjoy the way fig mixes with coconut on my wrist

Posted by Robin on 3 October 2023 5 Comments

Can’t I want to smell like a soapy hotel bubble bath AND listen to Sleater-Kinney? Does hot always have to smell like Carolina Herrara’s Good Girl, or can I be hot and smell like oakmoss? Am I allowed to enjoy the way fig mixes with coconut on my wrist without it being all about my “mermaidcore summer”? These influencers need to stop telling us to find our exact right scent, brand, and bottle and make it all neatly fit into an internet trope—it’s honestly exhausting.

I no longer have any patience with this influencer-influenced nonsense. I know a lot of these people are young, but use some common sense! I unsubbed from the Reddit sub r/fragrance because it got *so boring* — half the posts were asking for permission. Yes, you’re allowed to wear aquatic fragrances in the winter. Yes, you may wear a nominally women’s scent if you’re male, Ariana Grande Cloud if you’re a goth girl, Creed Green Irish Tweed if you’re 17. I wish the word would get out: these days, if you don’t wear too much, anybody is allowed to wear anything they like at any time.

I’ve never understood the whole “influencer” thing. I mean, I understand and appreciated the usefulness of online reviews, videos, forums, and blogs (after all, I am commenting on this one), but please don’t try to tell me which specific thing I should buy or wear or try to pigeonhole me into a particular aesthetic or style. Also, I prefer to get my information from people who actually care about the subject, not just about making money from it, and who know something about it.

I am really not paying attention so they are irritating me not at all, but it doesn’t strike me as all that different from the many fashion / beauty / perfume rules that used to appear in magazines.

I’m tired of “____-core” everything, but I was when I first encountered it.
