Wednesday scent of the day 9/27

Posted by Robin on 27 September 2023 156 Comments

It’s Wednesday and the swapmeet is still open for business! Also, National Chocolate Milk Day and World Tourism Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Diana Vreeland said "Fashion must be the most intoxicating release from the banality of the world", to which I would answer that Arielle Shoshana Saturday is doing about the same for me today, and with considerably less expense and bother.

Reminder: 9/29 is Diana Vreeland's birthday. Wear one of her favorite perfumes (reportedly YSL Opium and Chanel No. 5), or wear something equally bold, or wear something from her posthumous perfume line, or take inspiration from a Diana Vreeland quote (more here), or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
    Sotd is TF Cafe Rose.
I have been browsing all the advent calendars and the one from Jo Malone has some nice stuff in there! I see that it’s available in the UK already. Mayyyybe it’s time to visit my local shop and ask when it will be in stock…

How do you like Cafe Rose? I have seen mixed reviews. I sampled it in Sephora and found it to be nice, but didn’t know if I needed to add to my collection.

I personally quite like this. It’s very much a rose fragrance and I don’t smell any coffee, but I happen to really like roses so it’s okay. The rose is also a velvety type so it’s deeper and more plush imo.

IDK, I got it on the Canadian site and they sent it from a suburb of my city, so clearly they had *some* around even if they weren’t stocking them in stores…

For perspective, I’ve desperately wanted to restock my trusty face powder (Laura Mercier) recently, and both Canadian Sephora and the Laura Mercier site are sold out. Yet…U.S. Sephora has it and U.S. Laura Mercier has it on sale (so I bought two and had them sent to a relative). In other words, we almost never have things in stock in Canada that aren’t in stock in the U.S. 🙂

(Sticks fingers in ears. La la la I can’t hear you) I’m doing my best to ignore all the perfume/beauty product/scented anything advent calendars. I need to weed out and use up what I already have before I acquire more. I really do enjoy an advent calendar with little treats in it, and I have had the l’Occitane and Yves Rocher calendars before. I don’t need more perfume, skincare, tea, or candles, I don’t need a lot of sugar, and I don’t need more trinkets to clutter up the house, so I am on the lookout for an advent calendar that is none of the above, but still fun. So far, I have found escape game advent calendars and jigsaw puzzle advent calendars. If anyone knows of any others, I would appreciate it. I saw a cheese advent calendar in the grocery store last year, but it wasn’t 24 different cheeses, it was something like 4 pieces of six kinds, so a lot of repetition.

In Germany they had beer advent calendars and fun toy / magic advent calendars. (I think I’ve seen beer advent calendars here, too.)

… quite a few alcoholic advent calendars, if you judge by what Costco will. E carrying at some point in the not too distant future. I say we’ve clearly lost the “advent” concept.

I’ve seen beer and whiskey advent calendars. I’d really like an old-fashioned type advent calendar too–the kind where you open a window each day to reveal a picture. The best ones seem to be from Germany. I will probably have to order one online, since I never see them in any of the stores around here.

Do you have a FB, or at least a good sized decant? The most frustrating thing with perfume is to finally decide that you love something enough to get a FB, only to find that it is no longer available. As quickly as stuff gets discontinued these days, it seems that by the time I get a chance to sniff something, it is gone. I have had it happen that I sniffed something at a perfume counter, and decided I wanted it, only to be told that they had no more bottles. If they don’t have any bottles for sale, TAKE THE TESTER OFF THE COUNTER! OK, rant over.

I’m wearing Mitzah and trying to psych myself up to wash the windows. DH is flying back from Germany today sick with the flu so I am evacuating this evening before he arrives to a friend’s house until the coast is clear. He promised me he would wear his N95 mask all the way home. But this is the last time he flies internationally while I am around. Last time he brought back a respiratory virus that laid me low for nearly 6 weeks. Flying sucks.

I understand the laundry mountain range. I’m retired now, and one of the perks is being able to keep up with laundry so it never exceeds a small hill. OTOH, I have been trying to declutter my house, so I have had Mt. Trashmore at the curb more than once.

I slept horribly Monday night then had a not so great day yesterday, but slept like a rock last night! It felt great. Hopefully that means a better day today. It’s been rainy and gloomy. I’m hoping it clears enough for a lunchtime walk.
My older daughter is on her way to the twin cities tonight to see The Psychedelic Furs and Squeeze. I’m more than a little jealous, but alas I have the responsibilities of middle life that prevent me from just picking up and going. Oh well, I hope she has the best time. Scent: Following Robin’s lead with Saturday. This stuff is a good antidote to a cloudy day, should you need one.

    Stuff I’m thinking about:
    -Decluttering, the ever-present job.
-All-cotton jeans – do they still exist?
-Kittens are a plague on crafting. Just casually mentioning.

All-cotton jeans do exist, you just have to look for them, and they may not be in every color or cut. You likely need to look online rather than in stores. I have to do that anyway, as I need a 33″ or 34″ inseam, and none of the stores in my area carry tall inseams.

Re: kittens–yes, but they are such a cute plague! It doesn’t get much better as they get older. My adult cats are constantly reminding me that they are much more important than whatever project I am trying to work on or whatever book I am reading, and that I need to drop everything else and pet them.

This! I don’t mind a little spandex if it is only to provide the jeans with a little “give”, but too often they use it to make them into denim stretch pants, as you say. I HATE skinny jeans. Nearly always, too, they throw in 20-30% polyester into the mix, and the jeans don’t hold up nearly as well.

That reminds me – a few years ago I was essentially bedridden because of a spine injury, and this is when I took up crocheting. My cat, on one hand, was happy to snuggle and nap with me, but on the other hand, was not happy about getting very little play time.

So one night I went to the bathroom leaving my crocheting unattended on the bed. When I returned, I found the kitty in full hunting mode, bunny kicking the skein of yarn I was working with. It was very cute and funny, but I had to spend much time untangling that yarn after that!

Nowadays, she is very good about my crocheting – no yarns or projects are harmed.

Got up early this morning rarin’ to knock out various errands before work, with a last run to the peach farm planned for my lunch break and soccer practice for Little Biscuit this afternoon, and click click, my car battery was dead. So, one jump from AAA later I guess I’ll be driving to the auto parts store instead. What Winnie-the-Pooh would call a bothering sort of day, but I’m smelling just fabulous in Carnal Flower.

Today I spent visiting around Valensole (to get even more olive oil and honey) and Moustiers Ste Marie, which is a very beautiful old village glued to some spectacular rocks.
Even Moustiers seems to be struggling in that two very good ateliers de faïence have disappeared. Still I managed to find a really beautiful plate decorated with small butterflies. It was another sunny and warm day and to be honest, I wish I had some more weeks of vacation. I was pretty much exhausted when I left Luxembourg and I feel a lot better now, but could do with some more stunning views.
First world problems, I feel very privileged as it is.
My SOTD was Oriental Velours, which again has disappeared. I’ll put on some more after my shower.

I have enjoyed doing google image searches of the towns on your travels, so thank you for keeping us informed! I am in bed early tonight after my covid booster, feeling crap, have not seen any sun in what feels like weeks but is probably just 5 or 6 days, I don’t know, but anyway I’m dreaming I am in Moustiers Ste Marie and feeling chipper in the sunlight….

SOTD is remnants of Shalimar MVP from last night. I totally forgot I had on a couple of sprays and was wondering why I smelled good even though I forgot to perfume myself today.

After several wears I have decided that Shalimar MVP is my favorite over MI. Still holding on to my bottle to test during different seasons. It is proper fall weather in NYC nowadays and I sense my perfume wardrobe shifting as it usually does.

I have been thinking a lot this week about ALL the nonsense in the fashion magazines which we used to devour when I was a teen — Vogue, Mademoiselle, etc. I do not think they were a good influence and I am glad that I gave them up by the time I went to college. I hope whatever young people are imbibing now on Tiktok & Instagram is healthier but I suspect not.

Building on Kanuka’s comment re: introversion, I tried to watch the Christmas dinner episode of “The Bear.” It was so noisy, with people talking all at once and shouting over one another, that I turned it off after about five minutes. I really do treasure the quiet.
No perfume this morning because of a doctor’s appointment, but afterward I think I’ll wear some Krizia Teatro alla Scala. It’s big and bold and probably something DV would have liked.

I like peace and quiet too. I have never understood why so many people seem to want/need noise around them all the time, or leave a trail of noise behind them everywhere they go. It’s as if they don’t know that it is possible to speak without shouting, to walk without stomping, or to close a door without slamming it.

Another vote for quiet introversion. I haven’t turned a TV on in many years and don’t see myself doing it any time soon. My TV addict husband who has it blasting into his ears all day long boggles my mind.

SotD is a combo, due to project of the week. Wafting remnants of La Vierge De Fer and SJP Stash. I’m determined to repaint our porches’ wrought iron this year. Stash body oil keeps lingering mosquitos away, while smelling wonderful. LVDF keeps me smelling lady-like while sanding and scraping all the rust off said wrought iron. In other news, the painting project did not advance much today, because a neighbor was having a giant oak tree cut down. I strolled over and watched with several neighbors and two pre-school kids. The tree was starting to die, so it was not too sad. I wondered if it was going to be used as flooring or lumber. The main bole was cut into 4′ sections before being carried away.

This morning’s Apres l’Ondee had worn off, so now I am testing out Papillon Salome. This comes as close as anything I have sniffed from the last 15 or 20 years to smelling like a vintage frag, and I mean that in the best possible way. It seems to be still available too. I am determined to work my way through all my samples at last, but with the rate of turnover in the industry these days, I figure probably half of the samples I have are of things that are now discontinued.

I think if I had to pick between a pristine sample of something discontinued, or an evaporated sample of something readily available, I’d take the pristine sample.

At least I would get to try it.

But not a fun version of “Would You Rather”!

Well yes, but my concern is that I will try something from a pristine sample, fall hard for it, decide I need a bottle, and THEN find it is unavailable.

I am making a point to check availability of stuff before I try the sample, just so I know going in if it is likely to be my only time to experience it.

On the road after a very busy day yesterday! Pooped me right out and I slept like a rock, then overslept to boot so running a bit late today.

I just spent 161.48 at Walmart for food and essentials and I want to cry! Haven’t even gotten gas yet or the 40lb bag of T-Rex’s kibble. I went to bed last night with a wet head with a bunch of curl gel/cream spread all over. Woke up this morning looking like the wild woman from Borneo! Even the folks in Wal-Mart were giving me funny looks. Now eating breakfast and lunch at the same time. How? Eating two caramel apples instead of one. AND, I haven’t even had my coffee yet!

    SOTD = L’AP Dzing !

It’s got everything, including good poop! The only negative is that my 8 sprays lasted all of 4 hours, if that long!

No IG post yet but may do so later. The bottle is functionally beautiful and it would be a shame not to share with the world.

I am still having issues with text messages from “businesses” like Verizon and a state agency. My problem is that these sites require Multi-factor Authentication (usually a text message with a code) so I am basically dead in the water. I waited to let 48 hours go through since Verizon did a manual opt in (or it’s what they said) and still no joy. Aaargh again!
