Thursday scent of the day 9/21

Posted by Robin on 21 September 2023 197 Comments

It’s Almost-Friday, the International Day of Peace, World Gratitude Day, and Leonard Cohen’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in good old Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue, which I included in 5 perfumes: iris fragrances for fall.

Reminder: 9/22 is the day before the Autumn Equinox (in the northern hemisphere, at least). Wear a fragrance that says adiós to summer, or hello to fall, or wear your favorite transitional fragrance. (If you're in the southern hemisphere, adjust accordingly!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
I know Fall is coming but it is still so hot where I am (93F)! The whole vibe here is still very much Summer, so my sotd is Miu Miu Fleur de Lait – tropical coconut ice-cream sundae topped with fresh, juicy mangoes.
I made miso soup with salmon, radish, zucchini, carrot and tofu. So good and healthy.😊

Well done on the healthy cooking! I’ve launched Project Cruciferous Veggies and it seems to be broccoli week over here. Also had some tofu, but I suspect it was deep fried and probably didn’t count as all that healthy.

I am in L’Artisan Seville a l’Aube, which is usually associated with spring. But its golden juice and combination of sweet, tangy and earthy notes makes it a good fall scent for me.

I have just smelled an amazing scent on my mother. I could identify rose and patchouli, and possibly incense. When asked, she confirmed that it was one of the samples I gave her. Turns out it was Oud Ispahan. It is such a rose bomb on her!

We had some loud explosions early in the morning and something was burning. I have just found out that some debris hit a factory in my town, which caused a fire. Some people are reportedly hospitalised. 😥

First, thanks for all the birthday wishes. Much appreciated.

I was trying to think of a fall scent today but also remember I have to head to the market for work later, so it needs to be somewhat innocuous. I’m wearing Kiss Me Intense, which I love and which will dry down to a very pleasant vanilla and retain a bit of that almond. A customer complimented me once on it, so I figure that makes it appropriate.

CBIHP Afterparty today, because it popped up as I was going through the perfume box. (How I wish I could put all those perfumes away…but there are still little issues they have to fix with the cabinets…sigh.) I’m not sure if it’s a “fall” fragrance, but it’s definitely not a summer one!

It’s basically 2nd Cumming, slightly reformulated. I get whiskey, tobacco (light) and leather. It’s supposed to evoke the sweaty period hanging out after you’ve been out dancing…I don’t get any sweat, though.

Today is my Friday and the sun is just trying to peek through the clouds.🌞
I’ve been listening to a playlist on Spotify from 1987 on my commutes back and forth to work, and I have to say that there were some real hits that year! Or, as my daughter would say, “some real bangers”😂

Walk Like an Egyptian is among my all-time favorite songs. I once heard a version of it from a collection of songs performed by the songwriters. It was more of a jazz-folk style, that is to say, slower and not as wall of sound as The Bangles. Also, my niece recently did a montage of her baby’s six-month pictures to “Livin’ on a Prayer.” I had to look it up, but I was surprised she knew about such an “old” song! :0

I’m wearing CSP Coco Figue today from travel spray. Summer is still plaguing me. We are hopefully headed to cooler climes today.

Apropos of nothing, I have an iPhone 14 pro max and CAN NOT get it to focus for low light/night shots. Does anyone know how to facilitate this? I’ve looked online and I’m using the correct settings, but it just will not focus. So annoying because the night skies here make you feel as if you’re in a star shower and I can’t seem to get a decent photo.

    Happy almost Friday!

I know what you mean! I experienced something similar a few years ago, unexpectedly. We had gone up to the middle of nowhere in New Hampshire for a long weekend. One evening was clear and the temperature was fine, so we went out for a walk around the property where we stayed. The stars! ⭐️🌟✨ I had never seen so many in my life, and I haven’t since. I was just trying to talk my DH into doing it again.

Wearing Shalimar Millesime Iris again because I am so fascinated by how differently people perceive the caramel and iris in this! Some folks barely get caramel and lots of iris, while others get all the caramel and minimal iris.

It’s a cooler day today so the sweet caramel notes are less obvious, but still very much noticeable on me. I’m really enjoying this one today!

Currently, I am trying to get over an upper respiratory infection. I got it while on vacation. I am on day #10 with it.

A few days ago, I tried spritzing just a little bit of 4711 cologne on and that sent me into a coughing fit. Yesterday was the first day I felt semi-normal, and today I am trying perfume again, but only one spritz so far.

I finally decided on Atélier des Ors Musc Immortel for today. Happy birthday to Leonard Cohen! Wish I could share a photo of the gorgeous wall mural we have of him here in downtown Montréal. Here’s the official website:

Trying for some points today in EL Sensuous Nude. It’s cloudy and warming up ’round here, so still very much Summer. Sensuous Nude has some beachy citrus and coconut, but lingers on with amber and musk, and seems very much a scarf or sweater scent too. It does not have the wow factor for me, but I don’t feel I’ve wasted skin time! Speaking of coconut, I had fun buying a fresh one, the brown, ripe kind and cracking and eating it over the past week. I punched nail holes and got the juice first, noting that the tag said to discard it! My Mother used to let us kids open a coconut, and we drank the juice, so I put that warning in the same category as not eating raw doughs and batters. I used an oyster knife to pop the meat out of the broken shell, and I’ve munched on bits of it all week. Yum!!

Haha! Although I don’t like it now, even the packaged kind, we used to drink fresh coconut water as well. Maybe that’s the problem in that the only coconut we see is in a box!

My Dad loved fresh coconut. Us kids, not so much. So it was his special treat.

Wearing Shalimar Mission Impossible err Millésime Iris rather today. 😉

Received it yesterday and am getting sweet, airy iris w/ vanilla…quite nice. Lighter than MVP or MT. I also get the mainstays of Shalimar w/ citrus and leather too though the leather is not as pronounced.

I do want to mention the vanilla vs. caramel piece. Many reviews on Fragrantica mention caramel and some folks here too. Looking at Guerlain’s notes on their website I don’t see it cited as caramel but may have missed it. They do mention vanilla of course. I can definitely see it perceived as caramel but not sure I would have dubbed it as such necessarily. I know the distinction between caramel and vanilla can be gray and we all have different noses too.

Excellent report – Frangrantica is the “culprit” in listing caramel. I will have to pay more attention next wearing. Its airy quality is not what I normally want, but Shalimar, iris and vanilla do call to me.

Profumum Rosae Mundi for me today (WFH). I think it is beautiful, but I cannot imagine a FB for myself. I see online comments about it having a”dryer-sheet” element, and I can understand where that is coming from, but that is not what I smell. Rose and patchouli, quite lovely, and good for a cool-but-sunny day.

Spring is often windy down here, but also with clear startling blue skies and cotton-white clouds. The paddocks are vibrant green on the opposite hill, and lots of gorse in bright yellow flower. Rive Gauche captures the skies at the moment, though today is raining.

    SOTD = Shalimar Millesime Iris

    ❤️

I smell a sweet powdery iris with a gourmand vanilla drydown. There’s also violets for sure. I know this experience is in the minority but everyone’s opinion is valid!

In other news, I am “officially” retired. I can continue working either for the same company or for another one but I will be choosy with opportunities. While I enjoyed my job, it was actually more stressful than I thought. It is nice just waking up to a brand new day without worries about having to be at the train station to make it to my train or be at an early meeting all ready to go. If I don’t ever work again, I can live comfortably with enough savings and investment to last me through my lifetime. For now, I have chosen to relax and enjoy my time off! Wish me luck!

Regarding the missing Chanel No. 19 EDT post, it got swallowed up by IG’s superior (not) AI algorithm. There seems to be no rhyme or reason other than they’ve all been Chanel. If you can look at stories, unless IG removed it too, I posted it there.

Hi honey! Congratulations on your retirement, I’m so happy for you!

I’ve held back on voicing my thoughts about Shalimar Millesime Iris as it didn’t work for me. I think that by now, enough people have tried it that I won’t influence anyone. I got a whiff of bergamot, a slight toffee note that leans dryer than caramel, a faint leather, a soft dry vanilla, no iris, and a huge stonking load of musk. The latter wasn’t clean laundry musk nor animalic, but Play-doh. That eventually completely obliterated all the other notes and lasted for an eternity! I will eventually try it again, but maybe just on paper or with a blast of Yardley’s Iris.

I got that musk, too!! I liked it (I like but don’t love Play-doh notes), but I agree it was the star of the looong drydown. Give it another try. I think it’s a shape-shifter, which may be one of Ms. Jelk’s hat tricks.

I went sniffing yesterday. No testers of Heaven Can Wait, but I tried TF Myrrhe Mystere, Cafe Rose, Cherry Smoke, and Electric Cherry. The Myrrhe was meh, and Cafe Rose would have been much better with more cafe paired with the pedestrian rose. I already have Lost Cherry but honestly, the other two cherries are better. Electric Cherry is brighter and quite realistic and Cherry Smoke is not really smoke, more like tobacco. I will be buying Cherry Smoke when the travel sizes are released (I am sure they will make some). I tried the Kayali Pistachio one, and I don’t understand all the hoopla about it. They must have a big social media presence. Because there was a wall of Bond NY, I tried a few of theirs (I don’t care for their lawsuits against other companies who use New York as part of their name or marketing) and the one stand out was NoMad. It has a quince top note that was really interesting. I don’t think I have ever smelled a quince IRL, but the note in NoMad was tropical and tart. I liked it.

SOTD for today is Acqua Viva. I never wear this when it gets cold although I should, it is so good. I am holding on to summer for a few days longer.

AnnieP, I hope you are feeling better today, and Robin, you are often in my thoughts. Hugs to you both.

I tested Pistachio too and couldn’t understand the hoopla either. However, I shouldn’t have been surprised as it isn’t a scent I would seek out. I thought Cafe Rose was fine, but have enough other roses I prefer so no need to buy it.

Pistachio got pretty negative reviews at first. After about a month, influencers started saying that they suddenly love it. They were claiming that letting it sit and maceration made it stronger and brought out the Pistachio note more. It was funny to me. I liked Pistachio myself but then had a bad wearing with it.

Another beautiful late summer day here. But clouds are moving in, and the forecast for the weekend is wet, wet, and more wet. Plus some wind.

The big news here today was that Teflon kitty got a new, soft side cat carrier from Amazon. She will need something like that if I choose to move her by air. At least she doesn’t run away from the new one…

SOTD = 31 Rue Cambon EdT, from the Sample Stash, plus Dame Gardenia body butter in the usual spots. The manufacturer sample I got at a NST meetup is almost gone now. I went poking around in the Sample Stash and found 2 more samples of Dame body butters: Orange Blossom and Osmanthus. It’s going to be a while before I start using either of those…

Yes. And it would take 3 or 4 days. Most recommendations are for cats to be in a crate for 6 to 8 hours at most.

Either way, she is getting drugged up.

Oh gosh that’s a long drive. Thank goodness for kitty tranquilizers.

She walked right into it and curled up for a bit. But she didn’t stay long.

I figure that was a win.

My SOTD is Eau Capitale. I’m very much looking forward to wearing my heavier rose scents this Fall.

Robin, with the link to that iris/fall article, I very enjoyably went down a rabbit hole reading your older articles. Thanks!

      Is it a peppery rose?

Oh I’m so glad…I hate to think of all those reviews just sitting there 🙂

And I read them now and can’t remember how I ever wrote so many!

I am wearing Fenty edp today. I would love to have the matching body butter of this.
It was a gorgeous day here.

Maybe during the next sephora sale. It’s a pretty big tub though. Maybe they will do a sample set.

Did you think the same thing I did?

Lol! I don’t know what you thought, but my first thought was Gene Simmons won’t turn anything down for money!

I wore my new sample of Ffern Autumn 23. It starts out with something very herbal and sharp to my nose, which I didn’t enjoy. Perhaps it’s the carrot seed mentioned? Other listed notes are fig, iris, hay, and birch tar. Unfortunately, the middles notes seem oddly MIA, which is a shame because it sounds lovely. So it goes from sharp to burnt (not a fan of birch tar.) Well, the bottle is going back. I think it’s time to cancel my membership, as I’ve sent 3 of 4 back so far. This summer’s release was pretty, though!

        It’s here: https://ffern.co/

It’s a small company in England that makes natural, organic fragrances (acc’g to website.) You have to sign up for membership, and each quarter they release a new fragrance and send a bottle and a spray sample. Try the sample, and if you don’t want the bottle, you just send it back. It’s free, and I’ve never had a problem.
The style of perfume is like it sounds it would be – leaning towards transparent and (unsurprisingly) not long-lasting. The packaging is all very well-done, and I think it’s an interesting service. If you’re not liable to feel guilty about sending stuff back, lol!

I dug out my mini of Phi Une Rose de Kandahar. It’s still going strong: no signs if evaporation, thankfully. It’s the rose that I can wear. Perfect for this transition time of year.

Pulled out my yoga pants and long sleeve shirts yesterday since temperatures have dropped here. Made a batch of black bean soup!
