Wednesday scent of the day 9/20

Posted by Robin on 20 September 2023 169 Comments

It’s Hump Day, National Pepperoni Pizza Day and Sophia Loren's birthday. The swapmeet is coming up on Saturday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès L'Ambre des Merveilles layered with Eau Claire des Merveilles. (Perfumelover67 wore L'Ambre yesterday and reminded me that it's a great transitional fragrance.)

Reminder: 9/22 is the day before the Autumn Equinox (in the northern hemisphere, at least). Wear a fragrance that says adiós to summer, or hello to fall, or wear your favorite transitional fragrance. (If you're in the southern hemisphere, adjust accordingly!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Sotd is Zara Leather Jardin. I love it so much I am wearing it again. (I actually wore it last night as well.)
There is this cutest Common House Gecko in my room. I have seen it lurking and scuttling about for a few days already; poor thing must be so scared. I don’t know how to help it out of my house as I am sure it will probably die of starvation if it stays here… 😭

Since they don’t bite, I suggest getting a small box or jar and slooowly approaching it while slowly positioning it between you and the jar. It may just run into the container. Since they don’t bite, cover the opening with your hand, and take it out your previously opened door. I’d personally also try just catching it in my cupped hand. I’ve caught many lizards in my day. Gently, gently…maybe you could chase it out a door or window? Hope it works out!

Wearing Ormonde Woman today in hopes that it will make me feel like fall.
I usually travel through Portland, Oregon twice a year to see my mother who lives further north in Idaho. I have not been able to stop into perfume house or fumerie since covid. So, First week of October I get to go to Portland!

I felt like experimenting a little today, so I sprayed Fils de dieu du ritz et des agrumes over a layer of solid Lush Karma. Both give me that early autumn feel, and I think they blended quite well. Probably because they both have prominent sweet, citrus, spicy and aromatic notes. The only issue is that patchouli note from Karma tries to dominate.

wow, I wish I’d smelled this on a mom when my kids were young! Mostly they didn’t wear perfume. I remember horrifying some moms at a bowling alley by daubing on a vial of Black Aoud by Montale. They slowly edged away. It cut right through the hamburger/fries smell, LOL

I was Great Idea twins with Robin yesterday afternoon when I briefly considered layering Eau Claire over the L’Ambre des Merveilles I had on. Now I wish I’d tried it!

This morning I’m in Ambre Narguilé. On me it has a definite apple pie note to go along with the sweet tobacco and amber. Perfect for early fall.

We are in Utah now, boon-docked here overnight with some beautiful views of a gorge. At sunset the walls lit up in the most lovely orange-red hue that looked like they were glowing.

For anyone who likes road trips Utah 14 is a Don’t Miss. It travels east-west between Zion and Bryce Canyon in twisty pattern all the way up to about 10,000 ft. Don’t look for any metal guard rails to give you a false sense of security because there are none. Just some long, steep drops. Not being a fan of heights, it was a white knuckler for me but gorgeous none the less. They were doing road work on the opposite lane in some sections and because Biggie Smols has such a wide 🍑 it felt like my right rear tires were off the pavement and hovering over oblivion. 😅

Almost twins with Glannys in Fils de Dieu. Since my sniffer hasn’t been getting a workout lately, perfume seems to be deeper and more intense these days. Maybe my sniffer is just waking up after a long nap…

Yes, so many beautiful areas in this state. Pictographs and petroglyphs all over. Great hiking and biking opportunities. In the winter, the lower elevations are just fabulous- cool and sunny, with the nights getting downright nippy! Hope you can spend some time here one day. If it was cooler, I’d really not be in any rush to get to NM because boon-docking here is plentiful! Lots of public lands to explore. 😍

I wholeheartedly sympathise with the white knuckles. I have quite a bad fear of heights and spent a very memorable week in the Alpes Maritimes once. They are STEEP with very narrow roads with mostly no guard rails. At one point I did a U turn on a particularly frightening stretch.

Utah must be stunning I only saw a tiny bit of it near the border with Arizona. I loved those wide open spaces. Hope you have a great time on safe roads!

Oh I’m sure! When I went to Ireland the only reason I went was because my aunt and uncle would be driving. At one point my uncle was tooling along about a million km/hr, whistling Dixie in a 25 year old Mercedes, zipping around curves on The Wild Atlantic Way in a fashion that made grip my door handle very tightly while clenching my teeth to keep from screaming! I think most places in other countries have those one lane roads with all kinds of blind corners and people jet along like it’s nothing. I’m afraid I’m quite spoiled by mostly well paved and wide roads. I need to brush up my driving skills.

The road through Hell’s Canyon is something like that; curves, hairpin turns, narrow shoulders, very few guardrails, and sheer drops down to the canyon floor and the Snake River thousands of feet below. Stunning scenery though! I find I am less nervous on such roads when I am the one driving, so after my husband drove in all the way to the end of the road, we switched and I drove out. We did the same thing with Pike’s Peak; he drove up, I drove down.

Yeah, I was asking on a Northern Lite forum (that’s the kind of camper I have. (If we see each other on the road we always wave 👋🏼. It’s a small group and they’re very helpful if an issue comes up with your camper. They’ve already told me how to fix my fridge!). There were some good suggestions but I will never do a couple which are really Jeep trails. People have died on a couple of those trails. Life is short. I don’t see any reason to hurry it along!

Independence Pass is a paved state highway that carries regular car traffic. However it’s a single lane road in spots which can make for some interesting situations.

My brother knows about some of those Jeep trails since he has an off road rig. Someday he’ll get it running again…

Stay safe, Deva. I had to google these mountain pass roads mentioned. I’m a white-knuckler too plus I hate heights. I had to plan our road trip home from Florida and deliberately picked the route(s) that didn’t have super-crazy mountain passes (as much as I could avoid them).

When we were kids, the one that stuck out for me was Beartooth Pass, on the way to Yellowstone. My Dad wanted to drive it at night. Glad Mom talked him out of such nonsense!

Lillyjo, pay close attention to your B12 level. I found out in my 40’s that mine was so low I was having neurological symptoms, which is why I made the MD appointment in the first place. And FYI: many elderly people diagnosed with dementia are actually B12 deficient. As soon as it’s corrected, the dementia resolves. Most countries treat anything <400. In the US we are so backwards, we not only don’t ROUTINELY test for it, it’s not treated unless it’s <200. B12 needs “intrinsic factor” to be absorbed and used by your body. If you lack this factor, oral supplementation does nothing because you’re unable to absorb it. Intrinsic factor is secreted by your stomach lining. As people age, or for those on PPI, this factor is significantly reduced or all together absent. Many vegetarians eventually become deficient. So, if you’re low enough to need treatment, the best way is to bypass the oral route all together and get it SQ/IM to ensure it’s available for your body to use. Sorry for the health lesson but this is such a cheap and easy fix and it makes a HUGE difference for people. I wish is was part of annual blood work just like thyroid studies, CBC, and Chem panels…

I was hoping you would chime in. What is SQ/IM?
My doctor told me to take the one’s that dissolve under your tongue.
My levels are in the 300’s somewhere.

SQ and IM stand for subcutaneous or intramuscular injections. In other words, given a shot either under the skin in the tissue or in the muscle.

Sublingual, which is under the tongue, also bypasses the stomach so you will get direct absorption. I’m glad he’s retesting you in a couple of weeks. My level was so low I had to be injected everyday for a week, then weekly, now just monthly for maintenance. My first injection made a huge difference, but as I said I was quite low. In case you switch doctors, make sure you keep track of your levels, because most physicians don’t test for this annually unless there are symptoms. And even if you stay with the same MD, he/she should be testing you annually from now on. Really wish there was a patient advocate job I could find because I’d be good at it! 😀

Well, speak of the devil…I got an email from Avant-Garden Labs this morning explaining that their customer service rep quit, (so no chat) and when bottles will be shipped. I sent a return email asking about my order, because the scent I wanted is not in production. I guess I’ll see what happens, but at least I know there is someone working there.

Today’s scent is commando, because I think I am going sniffing later. I’d like to try the TF Myrrh and Heaven Can Wait if I can find testers.

I can’t remember if I put on perfume this morning but after my shower I did some liberal spraying with Gardénia Passion.
I gifted the remains of a decant of Sables to the lady from whom I’m renting my gîte. She loves the smell of immortelle and I happened to have brought some Sables in my holiday stash. She was instantly smitten.

So I went to Yves Rocher to smell their Bourbon Vanilla lotion. It was very thin and plasticky smelling so that’s a no go. There’s an EOS Vanilla Cashmere at Target that looks promising, will try that when I get to San Diego.

Went sniffing briefly, to retest perfumes I had smelled a long time ago and had no real memory of: Guerlain Musc Outreblanc, Frenchy Lavande, Joyeuse Tubéreuse and Cruel Gardénia. They are all still a no except for Cruel Gardénia which was pleasant but I’m not really a gardenia person.

Smelled Ambre Narguilé but it was too sweet & fruity on me. The Kilian Angel’s Share tester was broken so I couldn’t compare them.

So no real scent of the day… will have a wash later and put on Ambre Russe.

My Shalimar Iris arrived today and just sprayed it on for a test drive. 🙂

I am getting lots of iris in the opening and the usual facets of Shalimar w/ some airy vanilla that some might say borders on caramel. ehaheeh I bring that up b/c lots of reviews both here and on Fragantica cite caramel but I am not sure if I would peg it as caramel without having had that reference. Others on Fragrantica say they don’t detect iris and/or the leather, etc. usually present in Shalimar but I am getting powdery iris w/ some airy vanilla so far…definitely gossamer as compared to MVP or Shalimar Tonka…not a bad thing by any means just noting it is lighter and somehow more airy.

So far? I like it plenty. ehaeheh But yeah lots of buttery iris to my nose…not absent as some would have you believe. 😉

My SOTD is an unknown L’Occitane from a mini I bought at a thrift shop. It was one of those La Collection de Grasse “&” bottle series that came out a few years back. It is unmarked, annoyingly. I know it’s not the Iris Bleue Iris Blanc or Tea & Bigarade, or Vanille Narcisse or Jasmin Bergamote so I suppose it’s the Magnolia & Mure but I can’t be 100% sure. They are all very pretty and light and great for summer.

I’m in a good scent to transition to fall, Rebecca Minkoff EDP. I did a blind buy from Nordstrom Rack over Labor Day weekend and got a 30ml bottle for $16.85. It’s one of those no brainer perfumes. It reminds me of EL Sensuous or the discontinued Leslie Blodgett Bare Skin.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDT

Not a typo and it is so good! I haven’t worn this in ages due to my aversion to imperfect bottles – the atomizer housing has a dent. How it passed QA is beyond me. I should just think of it as the runt of the litter. One of these days, I’ll take a picture of the offending section.
