Thursday scent of the day 9/7

Posted by Robin on 7 September 2023 120 Comments

It's Thursday, plus National Beer Lovers Day and the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. Birthdays: Elizabeth I, Grandma Moses, Elinor Wylie, Laura Ashley, Sonny Rollins, Buddy Holly. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking saffron points in Diptyque Volutes.

Reminder: on 9/8, wear a fragrance with saffron, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Delina again today. Adjusting to the new back to school mode and it’s easy. Kids have a rose ceremony today so I am in the mood for roses 🌹

The Rose Ceremony is an event that marks the transition from one stage of life to another. With the passing of a rose between the oldest and youngest students

Today I’m in the saffron-adjacent Bulgari Omnia. Saffron isn’t dominant but it’s there. I still can’t believe this was discontinued — I’m glad I have enough to last me the rest of my life.

Crazy busy yesterday so I didn’t post, but wore Arquiste Indigo Smoke, which was great in the ungodly heat & humidity. It smelled like lapsang souchon tea. Today I’m in Amouage Ashore, a lovely solar jasmine.

I’m up too early for perfume yet–coffee first. (The yard guys came before 8 a.m. today with their blasted blasting blowers. Ugh. I can hardly blame them though when the forecast high for the day is 103. Sigh.)

Anyway I saw Christoper Kimball do this test on his show the other day and thought I would share it here given our CP this week. I found it interesting and immediately did the test on my putative Spanish saffron from McCormick. Yay!–It passed. (This is the clearest site I found with a similar explanation–I have no affiliation.)

In Crystal Saffron from a sample someone gave me. This one goes on with a headache-inducing chemical something (I am sure those of you with a better understanding of aroma chemicals would know what it is) but dries down in five mins to something I quite like. Not tempted in the least to buy a bottle, but right now I am enjoying its saffron leather soapy buzz. The house is Matiere Premiere. Anyone familiar with it or its perfumes?

I know I have whined about this before, but one of my favorite perfumes is a saffron scent–Rose Opera by Scent on Canvas, which has been discontinued for probably a decade now. I have a small bit left in a decant which I am eking out. In other saffron news, someone from NST sent me a decant of Saffron & Orange Flowers by Jo Malone for Zara. I bought a cheap as chips bottle off eBay. A combo of two of my favorites, orange blossom and saffron. I’m inspired to try other perfumes from Zara.

Discussing chemicals . . . has Lucas/Chemist in a Bottle been around lately? I just realized I am missing him.

And for Jalapeno, with love, I am adding 🌻🏖️🌄🌝🌈🤩

Today is cooler than tomorrow will be so I’m going ahead and wearing my big saffron perfume that I was originally saving for tomorrow. We all know what it is – Safran Troublant! I’ve got about 3 or 4ml left in my old decant and have a 50ml older bottle from when they still had the curved caps. Also, I believe this used to be Gaia’s, The Non-Blonde, bottle. Her husband sold a great many of her bottles on eBay and if I remember correctly this was one of them. I didn’t know her or have a personal connection other than being a sometimes reader of her blog and enjoying her writing, but it feels special to have perfumes that were once hers.

Thanks for all the well wishes yesterday on my errant packages. Unfortunately, the search continues. My neighborhood PO was so busy as I got there only 15 minutes before closing. One of the clerks walked through the line to help direct people to other resources if they didn’t truly need to wait in line. She gave me a slip of paper with the address and phone number of the mail carrier annex that I need to inquire with. Of course, they aren’t open on weekends and close at 4 on weekdays. My partner tried many times in the past to call and talk to someone there, but there is no voicemail and no one ever answers. I might try my luck with the online request form.

I’m declaring it CP Delinquency Day and wearing The Pour Un Ete. Many thanks to the NSTer who included this sample in her package to me!
It starts out a citrus floral; I can’t really recognize the jasmine for awhile, but it gets there. Then it’s mint tea, then the mint recedes and it’s just tea, but the mint comes back! I love this thing. Have I seriously added another line item to the want list?!? Gaaah. Maybe someone has magically become tired of their bottle and would like to swap it…🧐

In BR 540 Extrait de Parfum for the CP today. Definitely feels like fall this week, with cooler temperatures in the morning but just warm enough in the afternoon to make you regret long sleeves. Not that I’m able to move from my desk much to enjoy it.

I have 3/4 of a shower…apparently they cut one of the pieces too large, so had to take it back and grind it down. Here’s hoping it’ll be finished today.

No CP, but enjoying another “it came from the back of the closet” moment in Bulgari Mon Jasmin Noir edp. It does not create a scent bubble, but it is a very clingy skin-scent that reminds you it’s there from time to time. The jasmine is sort of a light indolic type, and in fact I just popped over to Fragrantica and their note list shows two types of jasmine. I am finding that true. The citrus and the sambac jasmine whirl around the indolic jasmine. I am looking forward to the drydown on this one, which may have some patchouli. Happy Friday Eve, all!

I am investigating the other Hermessence scents that I ordered along with Ambre Narguilé. This morning it’s Épice Marine. I might need to spray a little bit more heavily with this one, but so far I quite like it. It’s similar to Rose Saltifolia (Maison Crivelli), but without the rose and with very soft sweet spices. Very easy to wear.

Tonight, inside, it will be Pd’E Eau Suave. I don’t detect much saffron, but it’s listed, so there we are. What I do detect are. Lovely rose and raspberry first. Such a pretty combination; one of a very few in my collection of fruity florals.

I was in Sephora this morning and tried the new Tom Ford Cafe Rose. I think there were mixed feelings on here. I thought it was quite nice, but didn’t purchase it. I am waiting in the next few days for two deliveries of perfumes so I can have that feeling of hugging the delivery man. 😊 One is a Dame fragrance and the other is a Serge Lutens fragrance.

SOTD is one of my summer favorites again – Splendiris. I am about ready to get out the fall/winter fragrances, but think I will wait another week or so.

I don’t think so. The lime keeps it clean and crisp smelling. The gardenia is there, but it is not strong like it is in some other scents. I didn’t know if I would like it so purchased a sample first and really fell for it.

Congrats on the thunk! Eau de Neroli Dore is the first FB from Hermes for me. I found it for an excellent price at FragranceNet.

If I had to choose, my next FB from Hermes would be Vanille Galante. Hopefully, some day!

Commando except for the lightly lingering scent of the herbaceous glycerin soap I currently have in the shower. Purchased at Lake Teletskoye (Russia) in 2016, and disappearing very quickly, in the way that glycerin soaps do. I won’t ever have it again, so may as well enjoy it.

Mr. Skal and I are going to dinner this evening with a couple we met earlier this summer — or sort of “re-met,” because one of them was my student 18 or 20 years ago. They live around the corner from us. Not sure what fragrance to choose — we are familiar with the restaurant but I do not want to alienate people who may become new friends!

Heading out to return some mail-order items and pick up some photos I had printed of our August visit with Grandbaby Skal — a surprise for his grandpa.

I did a double Saffron today as I went to bed late last night (so very early this morning) wearing Néroli Doré. The rest of this day has been spent in Songe d’un Bois d’Eté. I can’t smell the saffron in either of them. Busy day at work, so I’m very tired.

I might end up in Néroli Doré tomorrow too, if it’s over 90 again.

Which seems funny as we had hail earlier this evening.

It is TOO HOT 🥵 and HUMID. I may just need to suffer the few minutes to get in the car, drive to Wegmans, buy some ready to eat stuff I can eat cold and just veg out because it is TOO HOT and HUMID!

In the CP with YSL Babycat. It’s fine – I guess it is getting a lot of hype? But honestly if one has been aware of fragrance for awhile it’s not particularly new or unique. Nice enough if you don’t already have a bunch of unisex vanillas. I prefer Bvlgari Black, Essential Parfums Divine Vanille, Diptyque Eau Duelle, etc.

I do love saffron as a note, turns out. If I wasn’t testing Babycat I would wear Hermes Eau de Neroli Dore. Or Safran Troublant.

I agree about Babycat. Without knowing any of the perfumes you mentioned (but I may have a sample of Black hiding somewhere), “unisex vanilla” was my impression. It is an elegant vanilla and I quite enjoy wearing it, but one to sample first.

It’s a shame that the name “Babycat” was used for a less than spectacular perfume.

It is freaking HOT today! I saw 97 degrees F pop up on the weather widget my laptop uses. Not the best day to walk over to the grocery store, but it needed to be done. I was missing some ingredients for a batch of chili. Not cooking tonight if I can help it, though.

SOTD = commando, except for the Korres Guava Bosy Butter in the usual spots.

I tested Tobacco Honey, Heaven Can Wait and Deep Dark Vanilla today. Tobacco Honey was a nice potent honey scent with light tobacco. Definitely purchasing. Heaven Can Wait was lightly sweet with lots of clove, reminded me of Guerlain Lui, not very exciting to me. Deep Dark Vanilla was soft and woody, not sweet at all, and not really vanilla to me.

Tobacco Honey is sounding more appealing all the time, but I know I’ll never pay for it so will try to forget about it 🙂
