Thursday scent of the day 8/17

Posted by Robin on 17 August 2023 146 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy National Thrift Shop Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

(I’m still on vacation and still commando; my fantasy perfume choice is Demeter Beetroot.)

Reminder: on 8/18, wear a fragrance that features a note that you might eat in a salad, or that you might grow in a vegetable garden...carrot? tomato? basil? rhubarb?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Nineties-era Grès Cabochard EDT. Lots of oakmoss: lots of everything, actually. Love it.

Hurray for National Thrift Shop day, that’s where I found the Paloma Picasso.

Reading about the new La Petite Robe edp Absolue flanker, which is rose, patchouli, iris and tea made me want patchouli, so I’m in Bulgari Patchouli Blanc.

LPRN is the one that made me *love* tea notes. I am a bit cynical about flankers calling themselves “absolue” but with LPRN, for me, the worst that can happen is that is smells like the OG. I’ll be looking forward to trying this!

I’m in Le Dix again, but this time in vintage EDC from a very old and decrepit gift set that also included the dusting powder I’ve come to rely on during this ungodly heat wave. Today, thankfully, the temperature is down 10 degrees or so (so *only* in the low 90s) and we have a cloud layer that is predicted to last most of the day. Looks like we might be back to normal summer weather next week.

Thank you! I admit I worry about the dusting powder, but I use it minimally and make sure it doesn’t get a chance to go too airborne. And I definitely avoid sneezing in its vicinity! 💨

I have a bottle of Lush Silky Underwear dusting powder that I never seem to dust myself with, but I recently discovered that a wee bit on my collarbone/chestal region keeps necklaces from sticking to my skin in the sweaty summertime. I remember my grandma used to give me dusting powders as little gifts when I was a kid, and I thought it was terrifically old-ladyish, but also lovely.

I’m wearing 4711 Pomegranate & Eucalyptus. How does anyone eat pomegranate in a salad? Do they just eat the flesh around the seeds and spit out the seeds, or do they eat the seeds whole? I’ve always wondered. I like pomegranate in scent, but I have only eaten the fruit twice and not in a salad.

I eat the seeds. A long time ago, I was told that it is fine to eat seeds in fruits like grapes and pomegranate if you had your appendix removed.

I’m doing salad dressing and fruit salad today. Divine Bergamote for the former (I have a delightful bergamot flavoured olive oil) and Ninfeo Mio (fig) for the latter.

It’s fairly warm here and incredibly humid. All those yellow fields are intensely green once again.

It’s the last day of our heat wave, thank goodness. We haven’t had it as bad as Portland, but it’s still been gross and fairly miserable in the apartment. So I’m going for hot weather perfumes still, and today it’s 4711 Acqua Colonia Peach & Coriander. It also works for the CP for peaches in salad.

    I’m in Chanel Biarritz again.
Happy almost Friday, it is my Friday. Woot woot.🎉
I’ve got tickets to see Brandi Carlile tonight, and I’m taking my teenager.😊 She got home from her Canadian adventure and talked about how one of her trip leaders kept singing You and Me on the Rock the whole trip and I was like hey, I have tickets to see her in a few weeks do you wanna go with me?! Her face lit up, Sure! I’m really looking forward to it. I saw her once many many moons ago when she opened for Sheryl Crow. She’s got an amazing voice. It’s being held at an outside venue and wouldn’t you know this is our “coldest” day this week reaching a high of only 75 and dipping down into the 50s tonight. My h knows my low tolerance for cold and told me I should probably take my Marmot (down parka) along tonight. Lol.

In O de Lancome for the CP.
Lemon, mandarin orange, basil, rosemary, coriander.

Christmas has already arrived to our neighborhood. The house that I have mentioned here many times before has its interior and exterior Christmas decoration in full display since Tuesday. This year they added a big dancing Santa Claus that continously plays music. At least the music is not loud enough to disturb neighbors. We have a long way to go before everything is taken down after January 6th. Merry Christmas, everyone! 😀🎄🎅

It’s amazing how good some of the salad kits in the grocery stores are.

And I am kind of surprised about the lack of cranberries across The Pond, since I have heard that Thanksgiving is becoming popular over there. For a lot of people here in the States, that is the only time of year they will eat cranberries.

Wearing En Passant for the cucumber note. I love cucumber in salads, but I’m getting hardly any here. I love this in the spring when the lilacs are in bloom, but in humidity like now, it’s too much.
When this wears off, I will put on Trudon Aphelie. This one has an ivy note which adds green to a mostly rose-centered composition. Ivy is probably what my garden would be covered with, since I tend to be an extremely neglectful gardener. 😕

Mr. E. and I have our sailing lessons this weekend! We are complete landlubbers but thought that we should know at least the basics so we don’t embarrass ourselves. We spend weekends in a sailing town, and the extent of my boating knowledge is knowing starboard from port.

No perfume for me today – we picked up a pair of kittens last weekend. I haven’t worn any perfume in close to a week now, and I’m starting to miss it. I thought I should give the babies some perfume-free time to get acquainted, though. They are about 9 1/2 weeks. The kittens remain nameless, although Marnie came to mind for the little girl.

This perfume hiatus is partly due to my daughter’s cat. She adopted Gertie into our home in 2020, and the cat would allow infrequent petting. I could toss toys for her all day as far as she was concerned, or keep her company while she ate. I could pet her sometimes; other times, she was all bob and weave to avoid it. (Sounds like an unhealthy dating pattern. Anyway…) This year, my daughter mentioned that the cat hates perfume. Ah hah! Lesson learned, so no perfume for now. (Unless I can figure out how to wear a smidge of ELdO Fils de Dieu without disruption)

In other news; it’s the first day of student attendance today. We live very near the grade school, so we see the families navigating drop offs and pick ups. It’s weird that another school year is starting, but there ya go! The calendar marches along whether I’m in tune with it or not.

Good luck with your new furry family members! As for perfume, you could try spraying a little on your neck or dabbing on your neck and washing your hands well after that.
My cat is fine with perfume unless it gets on her toys.

Yay for new furry family members! I’m with Calypso — I’m here for all the kitten details, news and rambunctious antics you care to share!

In the past I had a cat who was gaga for Angel; I had to spray it on one of her toys when I wore or else she would not leave me alone. So I think their feelings toward perfume vary based on personality.

Awwwwwwwwwww! Congrats on the adorable new furry family members! 😻😻

And yes, a cat’s response to perfume is very individual. So far, I haven’t had a single cat that has cared about it. But they haven’t hated it either.

In Guerlain’s Après L’Ondée. Current “inverted heart” eau de toilette.

Whew! Thank goodness Guerlain still makes this stuff. I’d only smelled the bee bottle version in the past but had never worn it. That has thankfully been rectified.

I love those multicolored carrots. I bought some not too long ago and they really beautified my salad. So fun!

I’m in Angel’s Share while I continue to live in the freezer section. Notes include cognac, cinnamon, and vanilla. All edible. Who says I can’t make a nice salad with these ingredients? I could possibly grow these in a garden, depending on where I lived. Grow some nice grapes on a hillside. Vanilla bean bushes are a little labor intensive, but doable…I’d love to add a few cinnamon trees to my imaginary garden, too. I used to watch the Victory Garden as a kid and teen, so I think that makes me fully qualified 😉

SOTD = Jo Malone Tangy Rhubarb Cologne

Love it! On theme because rhubarb and orange!

I wanted to cash all of my U.S. Savings bonds. Possibly a first world issue: I have a stack slightly over an inch tall. I knew nothing about cashing in these bonds. Let’s just say that when I showed how many I have, there was a deafening silence. Also, I did not know that I have to sign every single one AND write out my home address! I asked if I can sign and just slap on an address label – answer No. I have to leave the signed bonds if I did not want to cash them 25 at a time (which would take me almost 2 weeks to do). I cashed 2 today just to see how long it took — 8 minutes for 2. Anyway, I plan on going back tomorrow morning to leave the signed bonds. Wish me luck that my fingers don’t cramp!

Never even heard of this JM, but orange + rhubarb should be good!

Mo money, mo problems, right?😂 Seriously though, it sounds tiresome. I hate writing by hand, so it would be a nightmare for me.

I don’t know a thing about US Savings Bonds, so you are educating me.

But a stack of paper anything an inch tall is a whole lotta dead trees! Good luck with the cash out! 🤑

Having a slow start to my fragrance day, and currently just wearing some post-shower Moroccanoil “Spa du Maroc” lotion, which is quite lovely. Supposedly it smells like clove, black currant, and patchouli, but what I’m getting is a mix of bergamot and (very soft) patch, with a faint whiff of warm spice that I suppose is the clove. I like it — it’s woodsy and faint, something that could easily underpin a lot of my fragrance collection.

I’ll probably add some Malibu Lemon Blossom for CP point and general refreshness, a bit later.

Jet lagged, but back in NJ today. Teflon kitty was very happy to see me. I started traveling yesterday at 6pm local time, and got home around 10am Eastern time.

I was able to pop in and lurk while I was gone. I was rather amused by last weekend’s discussion on who is more difficult to raise, boys or girls. In my family, I was the “easy” one, and my brother was the hellion. According to my brother, my parents didn’t really worry about me until college. Then all bets were off. But I had issues with school bullies until high school. Funny what siblings remember about childhood.

PSA: for NSTers traveling to or thru Denver International Airport, they have a rather nice, if small, duty free store on Concourse A close to Gate 40. I was quite surprised to see the following Chanels there: No. 19 Poudree, Cristalle Eau Verte, Egoiste, and Paris-Edimbourg.

I kept my wallet closed, despite being sorely tempted.

    SOTD = commando.

Double Eris today with Delta of Venus and Green Spell. GS has a good tomato leaf note, so I’ll claim a point for it. It smells like the pile of green matter that I haul out of my veggie garden after pull weeds and giving the tomato plants a good pruning. And to my notes, DoV smells a lot like Green Spell with a prominent guava/ripe nectarine note and less prominent grapefruit peel note added.

Today’s tea is Nilgiri Tiger Hill, a good, strong, malty tea.

I had a town hall style conference call for work this afternoon, so I took it via speaker on my phone, with my phone sitting on my desk while I folded laundry. One of my cats jumped up on my desk, managed to turn on the camera, and gave himself a cameo in the meeting while our CFO talked about Q3 & Q4 projections. He had a solid 30 seconds or so before I realized. 😬😬😬

It was non scary storming here all morning. I took the opportunity to sleep in extra long. This afternoon my daughter and I had eye doctor appointments. I started out wearing L’ombre dans L’eau. Tonight I have on a half a spray of Cinnabar and wow is it potent. Good thing I get 9 months of winter to wear it in. Lol.

I’m in a few dabs of Shalimar extrait and edt from the decants I just made for my friend. I’m also going to give her my nearly full Chanel No. 5 body spray oil. I’ve tried with No. 5 but there’s something in it that doesn’t agree with me.

She’s bringing her sweet dog, a mini Aussie Shepherd to visit too.
