Wednesday scent of the day 8/16

Posted by Robin on 16 August 2023 122 Comments

It's Hump Day plus National Rollercoaster Day. Birthdays: T. E. Lawrence, Wallace Thurman, Georgette Heyer, Bill Evans and Madonna. What fragrance are you wearing?

(I'm still on vacation and commando; if I was home, and if I still had any, I'd be in CB I Hate Perfume Memory of Kindness.)

Reminder: on 8/18, wear a fragrance that features a note that you might eat in a salad, or that you might grow in a vegetable garden...carrot? tomato? basil? rhubarb?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Yves Rocher Aztek, in such an ugly bottle, which normally would be a deal-killer for me, but the scent inside is so good that I can forgive it. Remember back in the day when YR made reasonably priced, surprisingly excellent fragrances? Aztek is one of them: half fougère, half oriental, perfectly balanced.

I do remember, but I don’t even remember the name Aztek! I’m sure you smell good.

Neela Vermeire Bombay Bling. Many notes in this scent for a great fruit salad: Mango, black currants, litchi, cardamom. A beautiful scent that always puts a smile on my face.

    Happy Wednesday! ☕️

I love today’s photo — wish I’d taken it. My SOTM (and maybe D) is Le Dix. Violets can be added to salads so Le Dix is on point for the CP, but mostly I just craved its dry sweetness.

I’m wearing an overdose of melon with DelRae Emotionelle. Such a shame this perfume house no longer exists, it makes me treasure the DelRaes I have even more.

I treasure the ones I have too, but Emotionelle is not among them. I could not warm up to the melon note. Even La Parfum de Therese bugs me now, though I used to love it.

I just love melon in perfume. Not so much in L’Eau d’Issey which I used to enjoy but find very harsh and screechey these days, but in Thérèse, Emotionelle and Mousson I enjoy the note very much. What is your favourite DelRae? Mine is Amoureuse.

The one perfume I love it in is Diorella. It just seems I’ve become more sensitive to it than I used to be.

Like you, I adore Amoureuse. However, on certain days I’d go for Bois de Paradis. It’s very hard for me to decide between them. I also have Mythique, Panache, and another one whose name is eluding me. ???

The melon in Diorella is more subtle than in the others. I own Début, Amoureuse, Emotionelle, Bois de Paradis and Mythique.
One of my biggest perfume regrets is never smelling Wit. Have you tried it?

          • Calypso says:
            16 August 2023 at 5:10 pm

Yes I did try it and for some reason didn’t much care for it, but I don’t remember any details now. Most of the ones we have are the same except that I have Panache and you got Emotionelle.

Good morning. I am optimistic that it will warm up today. Was up very early yesterday for a 7 AM meeting that lasted 3 hours. Too much. Had to nap in the afternoon!!!! (If that isn’t a sign that I am getting old, nothing is.)

Yesterday was my 25th wedding anniversary. Yup. 25 years. Astounding really. We went out to a fancy Moroccan place in SF for dinner and had a blast. I talked to a couple of the chefs about The Bear to let them know I was in on all their hijinks 😉 I wore Mizensir’s Luxury. This AM I’m in BDK’s Pas Ce Soir, which was almost an FB wish, but then no. For the CP, I will note that listed among its notes is quince chutney, which I totally get. Not sure it is salad-ready, but might be nice on tofu or chicken 🙂

Have to say, I loved reading the Seven Pillars of Wisdom when I was a teen. I have since read a biography or two about Lawrence and am pretty sure I could not read The Seven Pillars again in the same way. Nope. Know too much about him and about the geopolitical realities of the Arab world post WWI to get lost in those sands again. And Georgette Heyer? Have to thank the NST folks for introducing her to me. I’ve listened to a couple of her comedy romances on audiobook, and then went out and bought most of her Regency oeuvre–which are still sitting on my upstairs bookshelf untouched. Ah well. I will get to them.

Haven’t finished season 2 yet, but love the series. Season 1 is stressful–with lots of heated arguments inside and outside the kitchen, (also, there is a back story where a beloved family member committed suicide–the set up, a la Big Chill, for why everyone is now together) but with a host of likable characters with relatable human frailties. Season 2 has taken a chill pill, more Ted Lasso-ish, and even more charming. There is one episode in season 2 “Fishes” that will probably trigger folks who have lived through terribly dysfunctional family gatherings–but really well done imho. Great soundtrack, and lots of fun.

I’m in Chanel Biarritz. I thunked my decant of Terracotta over the weekend, and this bottle is next. Would like to have it thunked by Labor Day. I think I can do it since this one requires copious sprays and even then fades within a couple hours. I can easily reapply several times a day.
We were able to sleep with windows open last night. Finally! This summer has been a hot one. More hot weather is in the forecast though.🥵

Commando at the moment. Maybe all day because I’m just not feeling perfume today. Still hanging out in the freezer section (meaning the cold locker I’ve made in my hotel room). 111F yesterday. I kid you not. Not a whole lot of people up here have A/C and I don’t know how they’re getting through these days without dire consequences to their health. Especially the elderly. I think about these poor people all the time in this kind of weather.

I used to keep a couple of bottles of perfume in my fridge at home to spray in hot Florida days (which were NEVER 111F!), but I just never continued the practice when I started traveling. I think my big chore for the day will be putting a couple of bottles of summer perfumes in my camper fridge. I’ll recover by taking a nap after. Leading an exciting life here in hell…

    Stay cool!

Yeah, I’m very cautious with her in warmer temperatures. The camper is working fairly well because it doesn’t heat up like a car by absorbing shortwave radiation and heating up the inside, then releasing long wave radiation, which is what makes the inside of cars heat up so fast (and so hot!). As long as the ambient temp is fairly comfortable and I’m parked in shade, a strong fan exchanges air at a very rapid rate and keeps the camper from heating up higher than the ambient temperature. I have a temp reader in the camper as well, so it will notify me if temps get higher/lower than I set. But let’s face it, 111F is just dangerous.

SOTD = Bukhara, which has coriander, caraway and pear notes! My grandmother made a sort of extremely fancy red cabbage slaw with lots of carrot, and onion and caraway in the sort of vinegary, salty dressing. Then right before serving she would add pear slices that had been sprinkled with coriander and sugar and marinated in pear brandy. This goes very well with lamb chops! She and her set of friends knew how to have excellent brunches in their mature years. I just smell mainly like freshly dug carrots right now. I really enjoy this perfume.

Grandma was Scots-Irish, mainly, with Quaker ancestors who came to Philadelphia early on. I don’t know where the recipe came from. She was an educator who loved to travel, so she had friends all over.

I don’t have a recipe, so have a go at it. Very thinly sliced red cabbage, red onion, carrot, maybe some turnip? Left to marinade in the vinegary, salty dressing for quite a while. Childish me was not discerning so I can’t be more specific than that about the initial dressing.

We have beetroot at the moment so have made a beetroot ( red velvet) cake which I just use my carrot cake recipe for, that is, raw and grated not precooked. Lovely colour. Would match with CDG Rouge but am off-topic Jicky ( though I could make a lavender cake). Lawrence of Arabia on the big screen is still one of my movie favourites for the desert scenes. Haven’t read seven pillars since I was in my twenties but would probably have the same misgivings as OaklandFresca now, though it would still capture my imagination I expect. Still cold here, and no lambs to report.

Oh wow, what a great idea to use beetroot in a carrot cake recipe! Pity my husband hates beetroot. Must find someone to help me eat it.

Peter O’Toole in that movie was extraordinarily handsome. Sigh.

My best gal pal has been trying to see Madonna in concert for years. She had tickets back in 2020, and of course that was cancelled, then she had tickets for another concert which was cancelled because Madonna had some kind of injury, and this year M had some kind of viral infection (not Covid) that had her postpone her u.s. tour to early next year. Hopefully she’ll get to see her idol at some point.

    SOTD = Prada Infusion Mandarine

Very orangey and appropriate for those who like oranges 🍊 in their salad!

I’m wearing Plum today, from Mary Greenwell. It’s my most fruity perfume, so I’m all good for a fruit salad.

I am CP-adjacent, wearing Boy. The lavender would grow in a garden, and I like lavender ice cream. Which I might sometimes eat after or instead of a salad. So, adjacent 😉

Sometimes it’s too hot to cook, and sometimes it’s too hot to even assemble a salad. Ice cream always works 🙂

A happy accident: I was looking in my little perfume cabinet for Diorella and couldn’t find it without taking everything else out, but instead found my little bottle of St. Clair Scents First Cut. I hadn’t worn it for some time and wow, it’s just so wonderful! I remembered it as mainly hay, fresh-cut hay on a summer day,, and that was garden-adjacent, but in checking the notes there’s quite a lot in it that first our theme, including bergamot, yuzu, lavender, basil, tomato leaf… It’s really fresh with those citrus notes up front and seems quite nice on another hot Houston summer day.

I remember that when the neighbor came and mowed the hay in the field just past my parents’ house, which was semi-rural, we all started to sneeze so much that we had to rush around closing windows. Even so I still can enjoy that smell!

I love First Cut! It may be my SOTD tomorrow — that, or Gardener’s Glove, also by Diane St. Clair. But I’m committed to Le Jardin de Monsieur McGregor for Friday! It has ALL the veggies, lol.

Wearing a few sprays of Demeter Pistachio. We regularly add chopped pistachios for the crunch factor in salads.

I’ll be seeing one of my co-worker friends on Friday. She has tons of peaches so will be dropping by a box. I’ll be making a couple perfume decants for her; some vintage Shalimar extrait and edt for sure. I’m really looking forward to visiting with her. It’s been eons (since the before-times)!

I am doing my own project here doing a trial sample series of vanilla gourmand type scents. Yesterday I did By Killian, Love Don’t Be Shy. Today was Jovoy, Fire At Will. Doing daily trials to make easier to compare.

Reading reviews of Fire At Will, I see a lot of criticism of its longevity but I smell it all day. It really does remind me of BBW Vanilla Bean, in a good.

Jumping in late on Wednesday, but taking CP points for Un Jardin en Méditerannèe, which has fig and various citrus notes. Also pistachio, which has become a big thing this year — 20 years after UJeM was launched.
