Happy Almost-Friday and happy National Watermelon Day! Birthdays: John T Scopes, PD James, Tony Bennett. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Hermès Osmanthe Yunnan for Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong doing They Can't Take That Away from Me, from the 1956 album Ella and Louis.
Reminder: on 8/4, for Louis Armstrong's birthday, scent a song. If that's too hard, wear rose for La Vie en Rose? Or wear something by Lanvin (he had a half empty bottle of some sort of Lanvin cologne on his dresser when he died).
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: shown is a Selmer Trumpet owned by Louis Armstrong, sold at Christie's in 2008. There is also a Louis Armstrong Selmer trumpet in the collection of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bonus reading: To Really Appreciate Louis Armstrong’s Trumpet, You Gotta Play it. Just Ask Wynton Marsalis at Smithsonian Magazine.
I am copying Hera’s yesterday SOTD, Aromatics Elixir, and matching it with Hello, Dolly! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7N2wssse14) Aromatics Elixir is a very comforting scent for me, giving me a feeling of reuniting with a good friend or returning home, which suits the mood of the song.
Also, I think this perfume would fit Dolly Levi’s personality. (Although she herself would probably choose something like 24 Faubourg which would match Streisand’s golden dress perfectly.)
Thank you for expressions of support yesterday, friends. Last night was ok.
So glad last night was better Glannys!
I hope you finally got a good night’s sleep❣️
I hope one day soon you wake up and never have to worry about losing sleep to this kind of stuff ever again.
Amen to that.
Amen to that, indeed.
You smell lovely Robin!
My sotd is Palais Jamais by Etro
(from a decant from a very friendly NSTer)
Another rainy and windy day here.
I am craving korean food lately.
We do have some restaurants in our area but they are not extremely good (most focus on korean bbq, and are not spicy or tasteful enough imho
and korean food is so much more than bbq)
So I am trying to master some easy korean recipes myself.
One recipe i totally fell in love with is the crispy hot and sour chicken by Maangchi
https://www.maangchi.com/recipe/yangnyeom-tongdak
Its easy to make but takes long time to fry. In the end i think its a good thing, therefore i dont make it that often 😅
Humm and So why is this good…?
Well, i dont think deep fried chicken is very healthy 🤣
I honestly hardly know Korean food outside of BBQ…much easier here to get decent Vietnamese or Thai. That chicken looks delicious!
I also love Korean food, but I haven’t explored nearly the range of it. I also can’t handle food that’s very spicy, or really just plain old spicy in most cases. We used to have an amazing Korean restaurant in our neighborhood where we were regulars, but they sadly closed in 2019.
Good for you for making that Korean fried chicken at home!
i made Maangchis Dakgalbitang, chicken wings in a hotpot, nice and easy to make and great on a colder day, you should try it
I will check it out! Thanks 😊
Palais Jamais is quite lovely!
Got some good news, my colonoscopy has been moved up a couple hours today and there is light at the end of the tunnel. I will be going commando until after the stupid colonoscopy. I just can’t wait to eat at this point. I think Jicky will work afterwards.
Hugs. I hope it is over soon and you can finally eat.
🤞🏻🤞🏻
Excellent, hope it is done by now Dawn!
Good luck on the colonoscopy and enjoy the post-scope meal!
Just got through the colonoscopy. They found a 2cm polyp and removed it along with a 10cm on that got removed as well. There were some parts that were uncomfortable even with the drugs. I had to tell my mother is that they are being tested and she can’t jump to the conclusion of cancer right now.
Glad it is over, Dawn! Hope neither you or your mother will worry before you get the results, polyps are pretty common.
In Serge Noire, the incensiest thing I own. Lotsa weird comments in Fragrantica about how it smells like burning hamburgers with onions, or cloves and nothing but, which I can only attribute to post-COVID dysosmia, because it really doesn’t: it has tons of spices in the identifiably Lutens manner, yes, but also incense and wood with a slightly leathery quality. I thought it was boring when it was launched but it was tweaked a little at some point and then I fell for it.
I agree with you.
Those cloves can be a bit in yr face at first, but when it all calms down after a few minutes, Whats left is a nice spicy and sweet scent. I dont know where people get the food associations
I especially liked the drydown (but not enough to buy a full bottle)
I loved Serge Noir at first sniff. I also do not think it is so weird. I have the 2017 version, but I don’t think it could have changed that much.
Today I’m wearing L’Eau Mixte, to cope with the 100+ degree weather.
Sounds terrible. We are expecting 93-95 for the next three days, and that’s scary enough for me. I can’t imagine dealing with 100+. I hope your fragrance helps.
Sometime in mid-August we may go down to the 90s. This is Texas, y’all, but even for Texas this heat is unusual.
That’s a great choice but I hope you get some relief from the heat.
Ditto!
I’m still in Louis’ hometown of New Orleans, wearing Hove Parfumeur Fascinator.
FYI for anyone interested, Bourbon French perfumes is having a 10% off sale of everything on their website for the month of August.
Oh nice! I used to like something by BF but no surprise that I can’t think what it was, ha.
A bit off today, but still kinda CP-related: I’m in Lyric. Quickest thing to pull out of the box before my 8 a.m. meeting.
Great choice!I think a couple of Amouages fits the bill for the cp!
Fabulous Human from Wick for a busy Thursday!
Had to take my Peugeot in today, after the airbag warning lights kept flashing for no reason(my fear of it exploding unexpectedly in my face was REAL).They had to take out all the seats and reset some module,it seems to have solved the problem.
Weird weird week at work, plus this weekend is my on-call for August.
Louis Armstrong was a Fabulous Human, right?😉✌🏻🌹
Indeed he was a Fabulous Human!
Exploding air bags is quite a scare…glad that is done, and hope your work week gets less weird?
Thanks!It got a bit weirder earlier on,haha!
🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️✌🏻
LOL…ok, sorry! I must not have wished hard enough!
I’m following the lead of others again, this time with Rose Ikebana. Mmm what a lovely summertime rose that I clearly haven’t spent enough time with.
This day started a little different than usual because my partner overslept. It’s only ever been me that oversleeps! He usually gets up during my shower, so when I realized he wasn’t up yet when my shower was done, I dried my feet and dripped my way into the bedroom to wake him up. He later said he’s sure his alarm didn’t go off, but I think he just slept right through it because he was sleeping soundly on his stomach when I went in there.
In other more fun news we are taking the train to Portland next weekend. My partner’s father will be there for the National Button Society’s annual convention. So we will see him one night and stay at the hotel where the convention takes place. Then Saturday, we’ll go off on our own and will stay in a hotel downtown. I imagine it’ll feel like a really quick trip. We did this same thing four years ago the last time that button convention came to Portland, and really enjoy spending a night at the hotel that’s right on the Colombia River. The only bummer this time around is we heard the hotel renovated their restaurant so it no longer has outdoor seating, which overlooked the Colombia. I don’t know why they would do that!
Strange, as you’d think there’d be an explosion of patio restaurants.
Exactly! I wonder if there was a problem with the structural integrity of the patio. Maybe I’ll ask about it when we’re there.
Hello all!
I’m having a somewhat lazy morning, though I did promise to take Jicky to the park. Honestly feeling L’Heure Bleue would go with my coffee.
Got to the end of my first sleeve last night and realized the cuff wasn’t tight enough. I don’t mind frogging for fit but I haven’t worked myself up for it yet. A week’s worth of work….
I heard back from the university I applied to and I’ve gotten it! I’m excited but nervous to fill in my schedule for fall.
Have a great day!
Omg! Congrats about school and I’m sorry about the sleeve. 💋 to Jicky!
Thank you!
Maybe L’Heure Bleue this evening. Congratulations on your acceptance! How exciting. 🎉🌟📚
Great idea! Thank you.
Congratulations!
Thank you!
Big congratulations, and good luck filling out your class schedule!
Thank you! It’s a bit daunting at the moment but I’m hoping an advisor can help.
I hope you get a good advisor, then.
Yes, me too! Though I did figure out a solid first semester. 😁
Congratulations on being admitted!
Thank you!
Congrats about school!
Thank you!
Congratulations!!
Thank you!
Congratulations on getting into the university!
Thank you!
Congrats on being accepted to the university!

Congratulations, that’s great news about school!
Thank you!
Congratulations!! And good luck with this new chapter of your life!
Thank you!
Congratulations!
Thank you!
Jambo! gearing up my greetings in Swahili.
Going to pick up my new eyeglasses in Pasadena where it will be much hotter than here by water.
Gypsy Water for the trip and a new book for car – Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.
How many days now?
48 days to go.
five more pounds to lose.
You got this! 👍🏼
You must let me know when you’ve arrived on my continent!👏🏻👏🏻
Robin, your CP tie-in is hilarious! I’m in Caleche EDT, mostly because I love it. Warm, soft, fluffy, with just a tiny bit of suede-y leather. 💕
You smell wonderful, Calèche is so good.
🙂
Another warm day and another day in Vetiver Pour Elle.
You smell great!
Big fan of P.D. James! Was first introduced to her writing as a kid when we had guests from the UK and they left one of her books with us when they headed home.
I still remember the big drama in the back yard because at that time we lived in a house on a cul de sac with a huge back yard with an in-the-ground pool which was a big hit with all the family and friends. Anyway, one day this relative, my dad’s cousin who was about 60 something, was out by the pool and in broad daylight decided to take off her bathing suit top to take advantage of the sun. We were in the house fixing lunch or something. The next thing you know all the neighbors were calling having conniption fits! And there was my mom and dad in the kitchen each trying to get the other to go out and tell her that “topless” was not advisable here in the US. It went back and forth along the lines,
“I can’t tell her! YOU tell her”
“I can’t tell her, I’m a man!”
“But she’s your cousin so you have to tell her!”
Back and forth! Better than watching ping pong or tennis! Silly adults!🤦🏻♀️
I’m clueless with this CP, so I’ll just wear whatever floats my boat. And today it’s floating on Kyoto, which was mentioned yesterday.
Great story, where was the topless relative from?
Ireland! Which makes it even more shocking because this was the late 70’s early 80’s. Her son was also a teacher and visited us a few years later and we got into a heated discussion about sex education in Irish schools. I’m sure you can imagine his point of view. Mine was the opposite. Fun times!
When I was little we used to spent our summer holidays in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. This was in the seventies and early eighties. Swimming and sunning topless was completely normal in those countries, far more so than in the Netherlands.
Maybe your Irish relative limited her topless sunbathing to visits abroad,😉
Yes, most Europeans are much more comfortable with nudity than here in the states. It’s like the neighbors thought all their kids would become sexual deviants because they saw a pair of breasts!
Pretty amazing, considering that the Irish people I know (my mother) are pretty buttoned up and prudish.
Exactly! Very unexpected behavior from an Irish school marm! 😂
🤣 What a riot! How old were you then?
I love Kyoto. It always seems to fit.
I think I was about 14 or so? Maybe 13. Can’t remember exactly. Old enough to just sit back and watch the whole thing play out. My parents very rarely argued, so this was some excellent entertainment!
Ill bet it was!
Great story, Deva!!
Very funny story Deva! Who eventually told the relative?
I true awkward adult fashion no one ever said anything to her. She came in for lunch shorty thereafter and she was covered up so my parents just let it ride. 🤷🏻♀️
(snicker) Let it all hang out!
That’s a great story! I remember living / working on the Baltic Sea when I was 19, walking down the beach, and walking right into a section that was FKK (nudist). No big deal, except to a 19-year-old American! 🙂
Right?! 😀
That’s so funny how scandalized the neighbors were and how neither of the parents wanted to be the one to deal with it. 😂
Adulting at its finest! 🙃
I’m not great at matching scents to fragrances so I’m doing a rose today, and what a rose: Mohur extrait de parfum, three whole sprays of it.
You smell regal! 🌹
I have a hard time with cp this week… will try to listen some songs and maybe i will be inspired ☺️
This is one I really need to try.
Same!

So, I’m thinking of the movie High Society with Louis Armstrong singing in the bus on his way to Newport to hang out with Frank, Bing and Grace … a kind of White Linen perfume might be good. Don’t have it. Don’t have YSL Jazz. Don’t have Grace Kelly Creed Fleurissimo either. But, in my mind I do! Meanwhile wearing Couche de Diable because I do have it, and I can reach it from my bed. Everyone fine? I’m fine!
I’m not familiar with Couche de diable but I’m sure you smell wonderful!
I never saw that movie – I’ll have to find a way to stream it. YSL Jazz would be perfect. 🫰🏻🎺🎶
And, I hope you really are fine!
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Mu8bSRPfc8I
Oh, I get it now. 😎
I’m fine!
What a fine day!
https://youtu.be/KvyOqKhKWQ4
Have not seen it in years!
I’m fine! Not quite as well dressed, but fine!
Patou Joy EDT today, just because i wanted to. Finally the weather was dry enough to bike to work again, although it was a bit stormy, but sunny. So good to be out again!
House twins.
Sharkskin for Mack The Knife
Perfect!
I like it!
Good call!
Banana, strawberries and yogurt smoothie
I’m listening to French Radio, a very good series on Simone de Beauvoir.
Vintage Eau de Patou today and tonight, Jasmins Marzipane, almost gourmand but not quite edible, I really like this jasmine scent.
Hi Aurora, thanks for answering my question about Envy yesterday. If you ever see it for one of your deals you should get it. Also yesterday, I awarded you an Enabler Pin for my new bottle of Fidji! 🌞
Yay to Fidji, thank you for telling me Lillyjo, such timeless perfume, it shines in the heat of summer and is affordable, the likelihood of my snagging a bottle of Envy for a decent price is slim but A Scent was a conformable wear yesterday.
my wedding fragrance – July 1974. Had I stayed married, I would be staring down my 50th anniversary.
Hope it’s a pleasant memory nonethess.
I almost got the current (Heritage) version of Eau de Patou when I was on my Patou blind buying spree. I did exercise a little self control and decided to pass on it.
I wasn’t as disciplined as you and purchased the Heritage version as well. They are different and both good.
There was a good article in the NY Times this morning about the opening of a Louis Armstrong museum across the street from his former home in Queens. Thinking about his life, I reasoned that he was no stranger to the joy of champagne, and I’m wearing SSS Champagne de Bois today.
Ha, was just adding the link to the bonus reading for tomorrow’s poll. Would love to see that exhibit.
And good call!
Robin, love your pick for today! 😄 I’m in another rose, Desert Rose from Dame. Ive had this sample for a long time,, and today is the first day I’m testing it. Very powdery and not in the mood for it. 🤷🏼♀️
Cant wait to see what people will up with for tomorrow!
You just reminded me that I have a sample of Dame’s Desert Rose. And I haven’t tried it, either.
What a coincidence!
Smelling great in Memo Paris Marfa, from a wonderful NST’er via Swapmeet. I’ll claim a few CP points for my feeling that this is a joyful perfume, and Louis Armstong seemed to have and to give joy in his life. Back from, for me, a bit of culture shock (the big screen experience, the blasting volume of the trailers) after two movie dates for Barbie in a row. My various friends and DH had different schedules, but I wanted to know what my nearest and dearest would think! For my part, there *was* enough comedy. But. There was enough that was “fraught” that I could deploy the black comedy lens. I don’t want to give any spoilers, in case anyone will be going. But along the lighter vein, I want to know more about Mer-Barbie and Mer-Ken. 😀 Oh, and Scents of the Day for the movies were, in order, Ibiza Hippie and Hibiscus Mahajad.
The last time I was in a movie theater, I borrowed some extra ear plugs from a friend. I don’t remember them being so loud!
I started bringing them back in before-times. 😉
The last time I was in a movie theater was in 2017, and that was when the “Earplug Incident” took place.
Ah. Well, we were on the same wavelength then.
I’m wearing Gold Heart from Map of the Heart. I reckon there is a connection with the CP – everybody who ever lived had a heart, so that includes Louis Armstrong 🙂
Right you are!
I’m wearing Terracotta today but I think the heat already melted it off. I was supposed to take my daughter for her physical today but the office called and canceled. Luckily I am still able to get her in next week.
Good luck next week. How did you get on with your La Dolce Vita? Any improvement?
Yes. I let it sit for a few days and sprayed again. It smells just like my mini. I think being delivered in the heat had affected it.
Glad that you and your daughter won’t have to wait very long to get her physical taken care of.
Nice temps here today, but it’s been gloomy and cloudy all day. Wanna trade weather?
I think I am getting the clouds this weekend. I will send the sun your way🌞
That’s good news, not the Terracotta melting but the rescheduling!
Yes. I thought we would have to wait at least a month.
SOTD is Lancome La Vie est Belle en Rose. Less sweet, juicy version of LVEB and fits the community project. Discontinued. Comparing it to the sample I got of the Iris Absolu version to see if I want to get it during the next GWP. I like them both better than the original version.
I like both of those better too.
I almost bought the Iris Absolute but then they just released another flanker that I want to try.
Can’t keep up with the flankers! I still haven’t properly tried Iris Absolute, only sniffed it on a blotter.
What? I thought that the Iris Absolue was the latest flanker?
I may have tried this at Macy’s but if it’s discontinued, I may not bother.
PSA for anyone who may have missed it when I posted yesterday: Fzotic has a travel spray of Monserrat available for only the month of August.
SOTD = commando, except for Bliss’ Lemon & Sage Body Butter.
I saw that and ended up buying the Limonata soap and the boxed set of three. Please don’t ask me if I need more soaps! 🤣
Which do you have more of, soaps or owls? 🤣
LOL – I do think I have more owls as long as I am counting the teeny tiny ones as an owl each.
Do you have owl shaped soap? If not, you should!
I don’t think I have ever tried that one.
My testing notes are saying citrus and orange blossom that tilts masculine over time on me. YMMV.
BTW, did you know that today is James Hetfield’s birthday? 🎶🤘
Oh I definitely don’t like tilt masculine. Thanks for the info.
I did not know about his birthday. Hope he had a good one🤘
Foxbin’s comment on wearing Kyoto yesterday got me craving incense, so I’m in a sample of Aedes Encens Japonais today. Wow, is it great! I would never have thought an orange oil note would work this magically with incense.
I woke up feeling dehydrated, so my “tea” today was cold water with basil and lemon. The hot weather and frequent rain storms this summer have given me a bumper crop of basil.
I need to drink more water for sure!
I believe Encens Japonais is rebranded L’Artisan Aedes de Venustas, right? If so, you smell amazing!
I’ve never tried the LAP Aedes, so I can’t confirm, but that seems to be the consensus.
They are different. I have both the original Aedes and the Encens Japonaise.
Both beautiful, but not the same. The original L’artisan has that great rhubard note. Aedes has come out with an updated version under their own house name, but I will enjoy what’s left of the original.

Basil-infused olive oil is delicious for roasting and sautéing things. Just saying. 😉
Good call! I always default to pesto to use up basil, so I need to remember to put this in the rotation. I’m also considering making basil ice cream to have with peaches.
Another sssshhhh today because …
SOTD = Chanel Eau Premiere EDP

No call from Amex … let’s see how long it takes for them to call me back! Also, jalapeño, yes, they stopped all charges from this vendor but the vendor used a new vendor ID, so, no go on that one.
And, I just learned something today – you know the three dots that are horizontal which usually means there’s some kind of menu when you click it? I called the collection of dots an ellipse. Today, I wanted to know how to export a distribution list and the instructions said to click on the “kebab”. I looked around the screen and sure enough there were 3 dots depicted vertically. Interesting but I think it goes with what a kebab is – 🍡!
Kebab, that cracked me up! Never in a million years would I have named the three dots a kebab.
Me too!
I would have called those three dots an ellipse too!
And a pox on that sheisty vendor.
Really, some companies just want to take advantage.
I’m wearing L’Eau d’Ambre Extreme today, it’s not too warm for it right now. I could picture Armstrong in a warm ambery scent. And it has a Turkish rose note.
