It's Hump Day, National Ice Cream Sandwich Day and James Baldwin’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm copying TeaInTheGarden yesterday, in Hermès Rose Ikebana.
Reminder: on 8/4, for Louis Armstrong's birthday, scent a song. If that's too hard, wear rose for La Vie en Rose? Or wear something by Lanvin (he had a half empty bottle of some sort of Lanvin cologne on his dresser when he died).
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image is Satchmo's parking lot [cropped] by GPA Photo Archive at flickr; public domain.
I am wearing Aromatics Elixir, only one spray is enough for me.
You smell great Robin. I will copy you tomorrow.
i thought about wearing that but decided on another chypre, great scent!
I am in Floris Night Scented Jasmine. The connection to the CP is rather distant:
“Historian Ken Burns suggests, in Jazz: A History of America’s Music, that the word comes from jasmine perfume that “ladies of the night” wore in the red-light district of New Orleans.”
This seems to be a case of false etymology, but the story is still interesting.
We had an uneasy night. Lots of sounds of explosions. It looks like there are no victims, but there are some damaged buildings and structures (but not in my town).
The fact that Google auto completed my search for “results of last night attack” in Ukrainian is sad and rather disturbing.
You and your people are very brave, Glannys.
❤💗
Very brave! Noting that Google changed the language is odd. I think it must be experimenting with AI. I get newsletters from a place that sells linen fabrics. Last week I noticed that the newsletter used some some some language that is sort of cowboy slang, that I had used in some other forum and got into a discussion about, with several people. How it made its way into a fabric site is a bit concerning.
I probably did not express myself very well. I typed the search terms in Ukrainian. Google just auto completed it, reminding me that this is a regularly searched phrase (for me and other Ukrainians). That’s what I meant.
The cowboy slang story is certainly strange, but it may be a coincidence. Our brains really like looking for patterns. The newsletter may have used some other unusual vocabulary before, but you did not notice that because it was not relevant for you. This time you noticed exactly because you discussed it recently. Just a theory.
Yes that is true. Coincidence accounts for a lot of strange things.! Stay safe!
Thanks for the origin of the word jazz, I learned something new.
Your difficulties make my own complaints seem very trivial.
I agree with you!
2nd that!
Sending you big hugs and strength, Glannys.
Thank you for the jazz origin…I also did not know that.
Great pick and tie -in to the cp, Glannys.
And sorry. Sending more hugs.
You smell great, Floris florals are very good, wishing you a quiet night, tonight, stay safe.
Your fragrance sounds wonderful, i need to check it out if its still available… i love jasmine scents.
Stay safe! Sending hugs.
Fingers crossed that you have a quiet night tonight. Stay safe, and be well!
I wore Ikebana last week. It was very pretty.
🙂
SotD is Dryad
Its been a while since I commented here. Been very busy, of course there is work as usual, but luckily also with fun stuff…. Social gatherings/birthdays, dog sitting (parents dog stayed at our place for a few days), horse riding lessons and playing ps5 games.
Also been to Barbie AND Oppenheimer (NO not on same day, why would you want to have an experience like that? It will probably spoil your mood regardless of the order you watch them)
Love both movies!
Weather this week here in the netherlands: 🌧️🌧️🌤️⛈️☃️🌥️☁️☁️☁️🌧️🌧️🌧️⛈️🌤️🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️
Its good for plants and animals but not for my summer mood.
Though in the end its probably better than the extreme heatwaves some parts of world are experiencing.
The snowman emoji was an accident. We dont have snow!!!! But it feels like autumn already.
Haha. Besides the weather it sounds like you’re having a great summer. Good to see you.
Yes, i have nothing to complain about ☺️
I actually like working in summer, loads of people are on holidays (taking 2 – 4 weeks off is not uncommon here). So my schedule is less busy. And I can also focus on the not so urgent things thar are still pending in my mailbox/on my to do list. And i have time to prepare stuff for upcoming last quarter (sept-nov is always a very busy period)
I usually plan my holidays in may/june and sept/oct.
Nice.😊
September is my favorite time to take a holiday! A bit cooler, and far fewer crowds.
Hi, glad you are having fun this summer. Barbie is fun, haven’t seen Oppenheimer but I want to, even though it’s not fun.
thats funny, i also wore Dryad today. It was perfect for a windy and rainy coolish summer day. When my partial bottle is empty i may need a new one, its that good.
Hello there! Nice to hear from you. Glad to hear that you haven’t had to deal with extreme weather like hail or a heatwave this summer!
Was doing some cleaning yesterday and found, from the move last year (from towards the end of packing, when you’re just frantically chucking stuff into boxes), an old commercial sample of Aquolina Blue Sugar, which I am wearing today, and it is a LOT. It’s as if Mugler Angel and Lempicka Au Masculin had a baby. A really loud, ill-tempered baby, to be honest.
But, do you like it? Or have you scrubbed already. Maybe there is a reason it was hiding from you!
I don’t hate it — it’s genuinely interesting — but it sure takes up a lot of room. I’m at work and I don’t think anybody’s noticed, because I used a very small amount, but next time I put it on it’ll be at home where I don’t run the risk of offending anybody.
Lol, I am generally not a fan of loud ill-tempered babies (long time postpartum nurse here) so I hope it’s behaving for you!
I’m in Terracotta, about half way through this decant.
I bought a new planner yesterday. Yes, I’m old school and still need pen to paper, and to visualize my month at a time. Anyway, it goes from august 2023 all the way through next year, and as I was paging though it I realized that I could fill in the day my daughter leaves for college. I almost started hyperventilating. I need to avoid looking too far ahead in it. lol
One day at a time. You smell great!
For sure. Really trying to be present in the moment and enjoy each day.☺️ Thanks!
You smell great!
I am retired and still use a planner. It is amazing, even in retirement, all the things that you do😊
Thanks!
Yes, that’s what my mom also tells me, someday….😉
I’m with you and look forward to buying my Week At A Glance calendar every year. It’s so satisfying to fill it with birthdays, etc.
It is! I have different color pens for different family members.🤓
Great idea!
I’m a nerd at heart.🤣
i like my planner for keeping track of my worn perfumes and my dinners. I also looove nice fountain pens and inks. I dont havee many appointments to note, but i like writing in my planner
That’s a good idea! I love the idea of a fountain pen, fancy.
I write everything on my kitchen calendar. I don’t even know how to keep track of things with my phone.
Yeah, when the kids were little I had a kitchen calendar that I wrote it in, it was called the Do it all Mom calendar.😂 Then for awhile I did both the calendar and planner. So much writing! Now it’s just the planner.
I can’t do phone either. My brain just doesn’t work that way. I need to see it written out.
At some point I dedcided that I didn’t care if work could see my personal appointments and just started using my work Outlook calendar to keep track of all my appointments, but I still use a paper planner as a diary to track non-mundane events/activies (concerts, movies, vacations, parties, visiting/hosting friends) and as a journal when I am in the mood to write a bit, and I keep them. I figure I won’t care if I eventually loose access to/track of past dentist appointments, but it will be nice to flip back through the planners and be reminded that I got to see the Postal Service in concert with the same friend in 2003, 2013, and 2023.
There are still things I write down on a paper calendar. I know I can use the computer, but it’s so easy and satisfying to use the dead tree version.
Today I’m wearing Bourbon French perfumes Huiles 85 which I bought in New Orleans, so I am collecting CP points. It’s one of their masculine scents but smells very unisex to me.
I think you should get double points for that one!
Showered with lilac soap, so followed it up with Idyll Love Blossom. It’s such a pretty scent – one for which ElisaP earned an enabler pin.
We plan to see Oppenheimer this weekend. Husband saw it yesterday and enjoyed it immensely. He’s the kind who likes seeing movies multiple times. I’m not sure he considers one viewing as sufficient. It’ll need to be early (before noon showtime, so I can see it on the biggest screen available.)
I really want to see Oppenheimer but for some reason I’m unwilling to go to a theater to see it. I haven’t been to the movies in YEARS! I really need to go. Plus, Cillian Murphy!
I developed a bit of an aversion for crowds/movie theaters… people talking during movie, or just chewing annoyingly on whatever snack.. or turning their phones on… sigh.
So i try to avoid it as much as possible, but Oppenheimer was really worth seeing on big screen with good sound.
We went on a sunday morning, around 10 am
it can make a difference (on a thursday or friday or Saturday evening the chances of the crowds being loud and annoying are significantly higher)
In the past two weeks I’ve seen the new Indiana Jones, Barbie, the new Mission Impossible, and Oppenheimer (the last two in IMAX). Before that I hadn’t been to a movie theater since before covid. IMO, with a deep and humble apology to Mr. Nolan whose movies I love, if you were to see only one of those four on a big screen, I recommend it be Barbie (or MI if you are a big action fan). Oppenheimer looked amazing and I’m glad I saw it on a big screen, but it didn’t feel as immersive as Barbie or MI. The the colorful sets + “here for a fun time” audience vibe for Barbie, and the complicated action sequences + audience tension for MI made me glad that I saw them in the theater.
Not a fan of the new Indiana Jones movie?
Oh, I didn’t mean to give that impression. I did like it, and it was a huge improvement over the last one. But I would like it as much had I watched it at home; seeing it in a movie theater didn’t add anything to it for me.
Ah gotcha!
I have to get a crown on my tooth today so thought I better not blast the dentist, who happens to be a friend too, with my fragrance. That being said, I am in Dame Musc Neutre.
Perfect dentist scent. I hope your appointment goes well today😊
The crown is the cherry on top because now you know you’re DONE! I’m not familiar with your perfume but I’m sure it’s perfect.
Ooh, you too? (My appointment is next week, though). Good luck with it!
I just got a sample of Musc Neutre. I really like it.
I can’t smell it!! I wanted to really like it, I thought it might be my perfect musk.☹️
Maybe try it again in a different season?
Good luck at the dentist! 🤞🏻
Oooooooof. Not a fan of getting a crown, but the other options are even worse. Hope that everything went well for you today.
Thanks for all the well wishes for my appointment. My dentist makes the crowns right in his office so I get it all done in one sitting. It only took two hours. I just read a book while I wait in between the prepping and making the crown.
Musc Neutre may be hard for some people to smell. It is very close to the skin and I get wafts of it here and there. I know some add other scents to it, but I have not done that.
Morning tea is coffee, and for all you chobani coffee cream lovers out there, I snagged a bottle of pumpkin spice latte from Fred Myers yesterday! 🎃 Also at FM, I found a package of 3 big chili-lime-cilantro chicken breasts for $3.50!!
If you had told me when I was 25 I would get excited about chicken breasts, I would have laughed. Deva, I said to myself yesterday, this is what life is REALLY about! Sale chicken breasts will trump clubbing, men, and dancing on the bar every time (which is what I was occupied with at age 25). Good thing I now have a little perspective at age 58.🤣
In fragrance news, I’m wearing FM Vetiver Extraordinaire. I’m sure LA would have loved this. It’s perfect for laid back smooth jazz, but I’m not familiar enough with LA’s work to assign it to any single song.
I started a new book that I’m loving. Loving so much that I don’t want to read too much of it at one go because then it will be over…Anyway, I started searching tours to the area and found a 12 day excursion in October that’s almost filled. I’m very, very tempted because this had been on my bucket list for ages!
https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/beebe-bahrami/cafe-neandertal/
You smell awesome!
And that book sounds very interesting. Noted down on my ‘to read’ list.
I agree with everything you said about chicken breast. Lol. If only I had known.
If it’s been on your bucket list, DO IT!!🤩
Same same on the chicken breasts, although for me it is the Impossible sausages which are *sometimes* at my Target but not in any regular schedule that I can discern, so scoring a package is genuinely exciting. 🤣
Getting any kind of protein on sale these days is a major cause for excitement.
SOTD is Chanel Eau Première which I craved this morning plus it must some rose somewhere so I’m good!
Its been ages since I smelled Eau première, but I remember it being very elegant and easy to wear.
I hope all is well with you!
I’m doing well. My contract has been extended by two years so that means I can stay until the end of 2025. Mind you I will have to figure out what to do next and won’t wait with that till 2025. How are you? I seem to remember you were working in The Hague.
Good to hear. 😊Yes I still work in The Hague. But I also work a lot from home. That is one of the few blessings corona brought us, that everyone is totally fine with that (at least at my work). The daily commute I dont miss and it enables me to balance private and work life better.
You are living my dream! I so want to move to Delft one day.
This CP has me stumped, so I’m joining the rose parade in Pd’E Eau Suave. I haven’t worn it in a long time (so many rose frags), but I do like it very much when I’m in the mood for a soft rose. I don’t get all the spices that are listed, but I do get the raspberry.
You can really just go with the “feeling” you get from any LA song, or you can go period piece (pick the year of a song and match to a release that year).
Twinning with Jjiji in Dryad and now glad to be inside, its stormy, grey and wet, brrr….
We smell very good! ☺️
Trying to get through the day with Chanel no 19. It’s tough not being able to eat. Even though my appointment is tomorrow afternoon, I still can’t eat anything. The prep jug is ready to go.
Ugh, good luck! It will be over soon, you just have to endure.
Bleah! That prep is rough. Good luck with it.
Good luck, Dawn! Smelling great in your Chanel!
Trying Lorenzo Pazzaglia Van Exstasyx today.
Very nice so far…the opening reminded me of Wicked Good at first but then flowers kicked in. I know nothing about the brand but lots of Italian lines have been turning up on Luckyscent of late and worming their way into my cart…che fortuna! 😉
Wow, that is a mouthful of a name!
Louis Armstrong was hugely popular in Japan, at first at the US military bases after WWII and later to the Japanese people. He toured, as far as I can tell, in 1953, 1957, 1963, and 1964. He played in Kyoto several times and that’s my scent for today: CDG Kyoto.
I continue to be amazed by how beautiful incense fragrances smell in summer. I thought of them as “winter only” for years.
Incense can be so cooling, you smell wonderful. Great research, too!
You smell great.
I love incense fragrances in summer as well!
It provides a cool and calm ‘dry’ feel that works well with heat and/or humidity.
Love incense any time of the year!
Great pick.
We had rain, hail and snow yesterday and the poor birds spent the day huddled under the eaves, trying to keep warm. Pretty miserable, really.
Louis Armstrong’s story is a rags to riches one so I’m matching with a rags to riches perfumer, Chanel, in Coco
Rain, hail & snow is at least 2 too many kinds of precipitation.
Good match!
It’s a miserable cold day here, it headed north from Kanuka overnight. It’s typical for the time of year, but that doesn’t mean I like it.
I’m wearing my most recent purchase, Tiger By Her Side from Sana Jardin. It’s lovely and spicy.
Sorry for the miserable cold, Gaynor, but congrats on your new bottle!
It is getting dark here much earlier now. We will send summer your way before you know it.
Twenty sprays of Ingenious Ginger cause why not.
I must confess I don’t like jazz, it makes me itchy all over.
I dated a musician when I was young and we went to jazz clubs and saw Mingus at Lincoln Center and drank to Kind of Blue and I think I made myself like it so he would like me. Chameleon days.
You smell wonderful! I haven’t gone beyond my usual 8 sprays on this one.
there’s still time! add a few more:)
Itchy! I confess there are kinds of music that make me itchy, so I get it.
I chose Issey Miyake a scent this morning which is remarkably persistent for a light scent and tonight it’s Phaedon Rouge Avignon.
A Scent wasn’t around for very long, IIRC.
My bottle is more than ten years old, it came out in 2009 according to Fragrantica, I think by 2015 it was discontinued, so rather short-lived, you’re right.
I’ve read that your sotd is comparable to Gucci Envy. Do you think that it is?
Sorry, I’m not sure because I never tried Envy, it’s very pleasantly green and lasts well.
I’m in an old sample of Heeley Chypre 21. I got it hoping for a strong rosemary note, but on me it is a bergamot + oakmoss bomb, with a mix of other green notes that don’t put rosemary on display the way I’d hoped. Quite nice, but not quite what I wanted.
Tea today is a new to me Darjeeling that I’m not loving. I’m learning that I prefer 2nd flush darjeeling to 1st flush, and typing this sentence makes me feel both dorky and snooty. 🤣
Sometimes, it’s all in the expectation…
Your SOTD sounds perfect for today’s mild summer weather.
Song of the Day: “Physical” by Olivia Newton-John.
Why? Simple. Around lunchtime today, I was helping Mr. Jalapeno load extra boxes of hardwood flooring into the bed of the truck. When we had hardwood installed, we overestimated how much we would need. A local Habitat for Humanity store was accepting those kinds of items for donation. So we gladly drove it over to them!
I figure I might need an Advil before bed tonight.
SOTD = commando, except for Korres’ Guava lotion on my shins.
Hopefully the Advil is for today’s pain and not the one lingering from yesterday!
Yeah, it would be for today’s stuff. The other stuff has gone away. I’m still wondering what it was from…
It was kind of you to donate your extra flooring. I have extra wallpaper I should donate.
Perhaps. But it was also kind of selfish in a way. It means that we don’t have to find space for those boxes anymore.
Not every Habitat ReStore location accepts the same things. Do check out the website of the ones close to you before before donating.
Oooooops. Why did I type “before” twice up there?
Ssshhhh, I hope the post doesn’t go anywhere to die …
SOTD = Chanel Les Exclusifs 1957 EDP
Musky musk! ❤️

The fraudulent charge posted to my Amex. No phone calls yet. Maybe tomorrow? 🤔
Is there a way you can permanently block that business from your Amex?
I hope your post gets to stay up.
I went with Robin’s inspiration from yesterday of Louis’s hometown and am in Mardi Gras by Olympic Orchids today. It’s a raunchy orange blossom, which is a type of perfume that I tend to love
Ooooooooooh, your SOTD sounds rather intriguing!
I think it’s really good!
Since we both enjoy the scented blooms in Seattle this time of year, I’ve been thinking about you when I smell the Harlequin glorybower trees blooming in the neighborhood These particular flowers emit a lovely and somewhat “raunchy” jasmine fragrance that makes me so happy.
Oh, yes I’ve been walking under my nearby Harlequin glorybower tree almost daily, and it’s putting out that amazing scent you mentioned. The gardenia shrubs have started to bloom plus a curry plant (that I thought was immortelle and am now unsure if the curry plant and immortelle are one in the same) is putting out more scent this time of year. I’m so glad we have an abundance of wonderful plants and smells around us!
Me too!
My sotd is Fidji. Enabler pin for Aurora!. Is it Donatella time yet?.. lol
You have plenty of time 🙂
I wore Sa Majeste La Rose again today and am loving the longevity🌹
A rose perfume fit for a Queen!
😊👑
Have been wearing Malmaison the past few days because I’d sort of forgotten about it. Still a really great carnation. Still a pity it got discontinued
