Monday scent of the day 7/31

Posted by Robin on 31 July 2023 135 Comments

It's Monday and the last day of July, plus World Ranger Day. What fragrance are  you wearing?

I've overslept and I'm still groggy, in Hermès Brin de Réglisse.

Reminder: on 8/4, for Louis Armstrong's birthday, scent a song. If that's too hard, wear rose for La Vie en Rose? Or wear something by Lanvin (he had a half empty bottle of some sort of Lanvin cologne on his dresser when he died).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It seems like my song/scent choice kind of works for World Ranger Day too.

The song is The Bare Necessities (link to Armstrong’s version – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbUv_Tnnl2g) and the scent is SL Miel de Bois.
“The bees are buzzin’ in the tree
To make some honey just for me” –
the lyrics made me think of this wild honey scent.

Anyway, even though today is Monday I wanted a chill, relaxing song. Remember, folks:
“If you act like that bee acts,
    You’re working too hard”

    Happy Monday to you all!

Not only Lanvin cologne for Louis Armstrong: in the photo of the bathroom there’s a good-sized (4-ounce? 8-ounce?) disc bottle of a Guerlain scent behind the sink, and a houndstooth Dior bottle on the shelf on the upper right. Can’t tell what either of them is, but it gives people more options for Friday.

I don’t know about anyone else, but whenever I’m watching a movie and there’s a scene in a bathroom, a boudoir, or a department store, I’m all eagle-eyed trying to decide what fragrances are there. It’s a compulsion. Particularly in the thirties and forties but even later, the Guerlain bottles — the disc with its conical hat and the scrolled one with the coeur stopper — were very popular with set dressers because they’re so graphically interesting: “Belle de Jour” has both in Catherine Deneuve’s ferociously stylish bathroom.

Today I’m wearing Todd Oldham, an enchanting oriental, all fruit on top (peach, kiwi, citrus), all vanilla-caramel warmth below. I’ll never know why it wasn’t a huge hit, but they must have made an awful lot of it, because it can still be had online, and for a reasonable price, too.

I do that, too. In Far From Heaven, set in the 50’s, they used Annick Goutal bottles on a dressing table. I thought that works-a pretty feminine bottle, even tho it wasn’t made at the time.

I LOVE Far From Heaven, and I have no problem with anachronistic set design if it enhances the movie. The Goutal bottle does feel very period-appropriate, doesn’t it?

I think it was in “Shaft” when a steamy bathtub scene had me lean over to my husband and comment on the bit Guerlain bottle, which likely held bath oil.

Robin, everyone deserves to oversleep on a regular basis! Take pride in you shut eye!

I’m still wafting SL UBV because I’m headed out of work and off to the freedom of 4 days without a time clock or badge! 👍🏼 I’m really struggling to get through this contract. Just completely exhausted and I can’t seem to get enough sleep.😅

We’ll probably head to the coast later today or tomorrow. I have to take T-Rex to the vet today to get her Simparica Trio, which I can’t get (even though I had a legit Rx!) unless they see her as a new patient. Oy! And word to the wise, do NOT use Chewy for anything. What a nightmare I’ve had with them. 😵‍💫

It’s an online pet store and pharmacy. I was hoping to get doggos heart worm/flea/tick prevention through them after getting the prescription from my vet. Here in the states veterinary clinics charge a LOT of money for animal meds that can be bought cheaper on-line as long as you have a legit prescription from your vet. Some meds you can get at human pharmacies. I get the dog’s thyroid medication at a human pharmacy for a fraction of what a veterinary practice would charge.

Scent: sprayed Pur Desir de Fleur d’Oranger Yves Rocher this morning. I’m casually looking for some alternative to use once the bottle is drained.

Disrupted travel plans: Was supposed to fly to SF Saturday, but United cancelled the flight, and I have a summer cold. Checked in with DS (with whom we were planning to stay), and he said “no thanks” to a summer cold. So, we’re still in Illinois, where we are enjoying cooler weather than last week. Since we are acquiring a couple of kittens this coming weekend, I doubt we will be flying anywhere soon. But, kittens!

A most unusual SotD for me today. My dear Insolence edt is the official choice. However, a friend who knows I work outside wanted me to try the pleasantly scented Avon Skin So Soft, which as many of you know, is often claimed to be effective against biting insects like skeeters and no-see-’em’s. Since she had a very big bottle, she poured it into an empty sprayer of “Bath and Beauty” brand “Love Forever Cherry Blossom and Jasmine silkening Body Mist,” which bottle also shows a picture of a peach along with a pink flower! I very much enjoyed this combination, though I was outside. And, I did not get any mosquito bites. In other fragrant news, my sambac jasmine is in full bloom. Its fragrance for just a few weeks each Summer is *so* worth keeping the large intrusive pot, bringing it in and out of the laundry room, keep the lights on all Winter so it can struggle through, etc.

Very cloudy today but at least it didn’t rain, we’ve had rain several times these past few weeks, so we certainly don’t need more.

Chose Courreges Empreinte, very enjoyable and it’s not even from my vintage bottle, this modern one is a genius reformulation as it’s so good and potent a Chypre. Tonight it’s Fragonard Les Naturelles Fleur de Vanille, a lovely floral gourmand which smells more expensive than it is or was rather as it is discontinued.

Just wanted to say a big “Thank You!”for your daily smoothie reports. You inspired me to find a quality rechargeable blender and I have since given up ice cream and jumped head first into making healthy smoothies daily instead of indulging in a big old waffle cone full of sugar and cholesterol. Who knew a perfume blog would contribute to healthy diet changes?! The last three years my diet has been terrible and my exercise routine even worse. So big thanks for helping me make healthier choices. ☺️

Trying April Aromatics Unter den Linden today, since I got it in my latest sample haul. I need to try it side by side with the Frau Tonis linden, but don’t want to walk into the construction area to unearth it right now. I think there’s maybe a bit more citrus in this, complicating it a bit, while the Frau Tonis is more straightforward. Anyway, I’ve got 2 April Aromatics samples now and it’s the first time I’ve tried that house. I’m finding they don’t last long, maybe because they’re natural and from a dabber bottle?

Google tells me I’m CP-compliant because there is both a medieval poem by the Minnesänger Walther von der Vogelweide called “Unter der Linden”, which would have been sung almost certainly, and there’s also an “Unter den Linden” waltz by Johann Strauss III.

I started the day with a spritz of some sample that smelled nice for 10 minutes and then disappeared, so in a slightly peevish impulse, I squirted Mitsouko on my wrists, and have smelled various stages of lovely ever since. I am now waiting to pick up a new rescue inhaler, since the one I have is out of date, and some once a day every day inhaler for my continuing to be bad allergies/ asthma reactions. Worst summer allergies I have had in years.! I hope the new inhaler won’t make my face puff up. I find myself being more vain about my appearance now that I ever was when I was so unconsciously young!

Thanks! We do not lack for rain or hot weather here, so our overgrown pastures are more overgrown than usual, and it seems every plant I brush against sends up a puff of pollen or spores or something!

I have been busy and MIA the past few weeks. She-ra Mini had her appendix out 2 weeks ago and is on the mend and doing great. Side note: always go to ER w/ lower right abdominal pain…I did not hesitate and am so glad I took her in. Pain wasn’t terrible and it was not yet ruptured so they got it out whole. 🙂

Lots of work drama in the last two weeks with the announcement of major contracts terming at the end of the year and significant reorganization being planned. I am trying not to stress but it’s tough. 😅

Never fear, I am still doing the Lord’s work and trying all the vanillas. 😇 eheheh today I sampling Maison Rebatchi Vanille Riviera which is a sweet, green jasmine w/ vanilla.

Glad you got your daughter to the hospital in time! Sorry about the work drama, that’s so stressful. Sorry about the work drama. I hope things work out positively.

Do you have any favorite vanilla scents you’ve discovered?

Thank you, Gail! I do have many vanillas and it’s hard to pick a favorite but I really liked the Shalimar MVP Vanilla and Tonka flankers that came out past two years. The word on the street is they are a doing an iris one this year I think. 😅

Thank you, ringthing! I quite like the Shalimar flankers they did over the last two years w/ MVP/vanilla and tonic…nicely done and both vanilla-centric.

I’m happily sitting on my COUCH! Woo hoo! It’s been a long 2 1/2 months. It’s bigger than we thought but it fits nicely; may need smaller side tables but that can wait for now. I’m wearing Love les Carottes for the occasion.

It is! Had to try them out ‘in store’. I wanted something that we could sit up straight. So many have a bad angle or no support for your lower back. Not sure why it took so long; they claim it was a “special order” even though the model was on their website. We didn’t get a different fabric or anything.

🎶 “Monday, Monday can’t trust that day”. 🎶 Woke up sore & achy for a second day in a row this morning. Not quite sure what’s going on. I haven’t done anything out of the ordinary in the past week or so.

Got good news about Teflon kitty’s vet visit & blood work today. She is cleared for future moves.

SOTD = commando, except for Bliss’ Lemon & Sage Body Butter. My tube is feeling rather light in the hand now.

She does have some itchy spots due to allergies, but the vet wasn’t terribly concerned about that.

Teflon kitty is definitely dramatic when it comes to vet trips. I will have to tweak the dose and timing of her “chill pill” for better results.

There seems to be possibly something going around! I was super sore yesterday and a bit today still. I was chalking it up to my chair situation because I didn’t really do anything extra strenuous for exercise. Maybe it’s a flu-thing!?

After spending yesterday afternoon and evening on my back binge-watching a bunch of British and Korean shows, my back pain is lessened. It flared up this morning because I had to sit at the computer, but it’s calmer again.

Jasmins Perle de Thé is my refreshing Fragonard scent – exactly as described. Jasmine tea.

Still can’t figure out who nearby has the rooster.,.it crows all day long.

I hope you find our where the mystery rooster lives. Long ago when we first moved here, there was a small farm nearby with a few pigs, a peacock and a rooster! Lots of interesting noises at all times coming from there.

    SOTD = Chanel No.5 L’Eau EDT

I may do week of Chanels but you know how fickle I can be!

So I’ve had a “battle” with Amex as a jewelry store was charging me for something I haven’t bought nor entered into a contract with. I thought I had it resolved when I saw a passing notice that said this jewelry company started charging me again! I called and have all the info I needed to provide and come to find out I either have to dispute it online, call again in 3 days or get a new card. While waiting for a supervisor (was already on phone for almost 15 minutes), I decided to cut my losses and just wait the 3 days and call again on Thursday. What a pain. If I really wanted to do battle, I will call again tomorrow. Grrrr. BYW, the amount was small but still 🤬
