Thursday scent of the day 7/20

Posted by Robin on 20 July 2023 133 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also International Chess Day and Gregor Mendel’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m doing tropical vacation, in Parfums de Nicolaï Eau Exotique.

Reminder: on 7/21, wear something beachy, or anything you think of as "a vacation in a bottle". (This is a repeat from 2014).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Boucheron Trouble today, and if a scent were ever misnamed it’s this one: there’s nothing troubling or troublesome about it. It’s a nice, polite vanilla amber, as smooth and rounded as a beach rock.

I bought that when it first came out and I loved it, but my best friend told me it smelled just like root beer, and that put me off of it. I’d like to try it again some day. I think I gave my bottle away.

I recently wore a new, and loved, purchase; the hubs said I smelled like one of his male co-workers. 😠

It does have a root-beery aspect to it, but if anything it makes me like it more, because vanilla-drenched root beer is a wonderful thing. There should be more scents that smell so good.

Love Trouble. I bought it when it first came out and made the mistake of selling it in a garage sale. Was lucky to buy 3 1-oz minis from a discounter before it disappeared.

Well, I’ve been neglecting to fragrance myself of late as things got a bit rocky — within the span of a week, my car, my bike, Little Biscuit’s bike, Biscuit’s crazy cart, my phone, my new relationship, and my refrigerator all broke (and an entire week’s worth of newly-purchased perishables went kaput). But hey, I’ve been so compliant with this week’s CP all summer! Today I’m in Bronze Goddess in defiance of the new could-have-been-love I had to walk away from, my go-to scent for our dates. Oh, well. Romance comes and goes, but my perfume collection remains ever loyal.

While scanning TV Weekly, noticed that TCM’s showing a few Natalie Wood movies this afternoon, which jogged my memory that she has a namesake gardenia perfume. Checked it out on Fragrantica and saw it contains freesia, which is a typically a nemesis note for me–but would still be curious to try if it were easily sampled.
Searched unsuccessfully for my teeny, ancient travel-sized CSP Tiare, but did come up with Terracotta, so in the ballpark.

Joining PriscillaE with Corsica Furiosa, my all time favorite summer scent. It’s delicious from that beginning blast of green to the soft, soothing, warm hayish dry down.

Had a nice quiet day yesterday just hanging out in camp reading. The only “activity” I did was get up to move my chair back into the shade as the sun progressed through the sky. That’s it folks! I did manage to go to the grocery and fill up on propane, so that’s something, right?

Back to work tomorrow and I don’t want to go!!😭 I’m counting the weeks and hoping I can make it without calling it quits for good. I got a nasty gram in my work email because apparently I clocked in 2 minutes early…Seriously?! I can feel a “kiss my a$$” response bubbling up! It’s only a matter of time..! 😁

They are SO SHORT STAFFED! But this is the way hospitals operate now so the admins and CEO’s can make millions every year. And when a patient asks what’s taking so long, I tell the truth- short staffed, so sorry, talk to the administrators of this hospital because they are the ones in control. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      Deva,
I am reading a book called:
” The Peoples Hospital” about Ben Taub in Houston.
Its a great book and talks about the inequity of healthcare, private rooms, uninsured and what happens. Written by a doctor who practices there.
My sister had a small procedure last week and cannot lift or do anything other than pass meds. Yet she is still getting dozens of texts to come to work when she cannot. Layers and layer of deeply entrenched bureaucracy.
      You smell great!

I just put that on my reading list! When I learned about the lengths “non-profit” hospitals go to to deny care to poor, uninsured, or underinsured people, I was stunned. To maintain their tax free status they must, by federal law, supply indigent/poor/uninsured individuals with care… and yet they don’t. Instead, they spend hundreds of thousands to harass these people into paying a hospital bill when they qualify for charity care. Also, just found a new scam hospitals are using- encouraging these same people to get a “health care credit card” to pile all the hospital debt onto, then charge these same people interest. And these people qualify for reduced fees or free care by FEDERAL LAW. So sickening. I hope you sister recovers well from her procedure. I happily press the “delete” key whenever I get a work text! 😃

There was a Time magazine special report issue called “Bitter Pill” in 2013 (hard to believe it was 10 years ago) that addressed this. The whole issue was about health care costs and a good bit was devoted to “non-profits.” If you google it, you can actually read the whole thing online now without having to subscribe.

Dude, so over the BS! I’m not sure I’m even going to make it through the end of this current contract, which ends late September. We had a urologist that was emergently consulted in the middle of the night for a patient. The nurses here are all new grads. No one assisted the MD with anything. Didn’t have anything ready for him at all. Finally, he came to the nurses station and said to the charge, “I’m here in the middle of the night because I was urgently consulted and I expect to have the urology cart and the nurse available to assist with this patient!” And he’s not wrong! The charge, who is also a new nurse said, “I don’t know if we have an urology cart? I’ve never seen one.” And WALKED AWAY!! Good lord, I felt sorry for that physician! Had get the house supervisor to go get the urology cart!! Just unbelievable! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Going for the CP in JLo Miami Glow – our little bit of Southern Indiana is at 82F and 85% humidity so we are rather tropical. (I have an odd appreciation for such weather, but I won’t try to convince anyone else to go for a walk with me! 😀 ) Miami Glow has that JLo almost-musk, and the box and name remind me of Joni Mitchell’s “Otis and Marlena.” I also like the bright, hot-color woven bracelet that adorns the bottle, with its little base metal gold-tone JLo branded flip-flop charms. It gives me moments of beachy-ness, but my first impression is of childhood trips to a local discount store called Zayre. There was a “fresh” smell of new textiles, a snack bar and floor wax.

Elixir is more of a cold weather scent for me, maybe because of the amber and chocolate. There’s something in the dry down the gets to me after a while, so I only wear it occasionally.

Chanel No 19 Poudré which I rarely wear but smells very inviting on my sleeve and tonight vintage KL Chloé, rarely worn too, very tenaciously smelling of the bus in Paris in the late seventies, it was so popular, I have a small 30ml for nostalgia’s sake.

Ah, what I meant to say was I used up my sample rather quickly. The lasting power of the perfume was fine for me. My bad.

I’m wearing Fleur des Comores by Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier today. My bottle has mostly evaporated and the remaining juice is dark and viscous. Smells good though! For some odd reason this perfume has always struck me as having a “salty” aspect, which is why I chose it. I can’t explain it based on the notes. It’s a potent mix of florals with jasmine and ylang ylang leading the way. I would like to find some other scents with the salty aspect and know I’ve got at least one but can’t think what it is. (Salt is for the ocean breeze at the beach, in case you didn’t guess.)

I am testing Un Nuit Nomade Click Song.
Vanilla, amber, something else I haven’t quite determined yet.
So far is lovely, but not remarkable in any way two hours in.

Joining the CP today in Dune, the one and only. How I love this stuff! And it’s perfect for hot days. I can’t believe I never even tried it when it came out. I’m making up for lost time. 😄

I’d try it before Dior decides to either horribly reformulate Dune or axe it entirely.

I listened to the new Troye Sivan single “Rush” like 3 times this morning while getting ready for work, and that was my inspiration for choosing ToF.

Had a crazy work day yesterday. I logged in to discover a torrent of assignments, some quite complicated. Was online till about 7:30 at night. S’okay…just means a bit fatter paycheck. Today was just as busy catching up. Now I’m off to job #2 – alternating between checkout and bakery.

But…I was smelling good in Fiori di Capri, which I have always considered beachy in that rocky, not sandy Mediterranean island kind of way. Today, I’m switching to South Pacific beach in CSP Aloha Tiaré.

Looking forward to tomorrow night…heading to see Blithe Spirit. It’s an outdoor theater, and the theater company is America’s oldest resident summer theater company. My first time. We have friends who go multiple times during the summer. I know the venue itself is lovely, so should be fun.

I’m wearing my most beach-adjacent perfume for my Friday, Chaldee from Jean Patou. It was apparently first a scent for suntan oil, that must have been a very nice way to smell on the beach back in the 1920s.

I’m wearing Grandes Vacances by Parfums de Nicolaï. It has a lot in common with her fabulous Eau d’été. I think it was a limited edition that I bought on a whim. It’s nice, but I prefer Eau d’été

My Ultimate Cat Sitting week is reducing to Major Cat Sitting this afternoon, as one of the 3 families I’m cat sitting for comes home. So down to 2 households, though unfortunately that still includes the “umm our 19 year old cat isn’t doing well and might die anyday” household. Sigh. I am happy whenever I open that door and still count two live noses.

CP-compliant with Smell Bent (RIP) So Long St Tropez. Which is pretty much their St Tropez Dispenser with extra neroli/orange. Nice, but not my favorite St Tropez variation. Now who can guess what I’ll be wearing tomorrow??

Off to watch some soccer… we are inundated with TV sports at the moment. Tour de France, Formula 1, and now the Women’s World Cup Soccer. Well it’s nice to have plenty to watch inside in the a/c anyway. And away from the drift smoke… we are getting smoke from Oregon now.

Well at least it’s not *my* ailing kitty. Just one of the 5 cats I’m cat sitting this week. I’m not entirely happy to be holding this particular bag… hoping she hangs on til her people come home.

Just heard a rather impressive rumble of thunder in my area. It was enough to startle Teflon kitty. Last I saw, she was hanging out in one of the litterboxes.

SOTD = more Korres Guava lotion. I did thunk a bottle of the Guava shower gel a little while back. Glad that I had another one handy.

    SOTD = ELDO Fat Electrician

    W00t – it’s a great vetiver!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Cu76wCZx3_u/?igshid=Y2I2MzMwZWM3ZA==

Someone on Reddit was wondering where the name came from. I have no clue but I hope it has nothing to do with THE crack. 🤣

In other news, I knew I wouldn’t be able to get away with it and it came today – a penalty for not paying the estimated NJ taxes for 2022! Let’s just say that the amount is equivalent to a very nice bottle of perfume and I will leave it at that. And now I have to pay estimated taxes for 2023 because I don’t want to be docked with a penalty next year. Le sigh …
