Tuesday scent of the day 7/18

Posted by Robin on 18 July 2023 165 Comments

It's Tuesday and Nelson Mandela International Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m in Comptoir Sud Pacifique L'Eau du Gouverneur. It isn't beachy but the nutmeg is a connection to our vacations in Grenada. Tea at the moment is Kusmi Troika.

Reminder: on 7/21, wear something beachy, or anything you think of as "a vacation in a bottle". (This is a repeat from 2014).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Fish Teapot by Eligo ("This teapot is made from ceramic and depicts a fish. It was fashioned by hand in the refined ceramic tradition of the workshop of Girolamo Franchini in Este, opened in 1784") is $150 at Pamono.

Today I’m in Old Spice, which I love for many reasons, one of which is that it is a sort of quintessence of masculinity, a granddad kind of scent for many people, but it is INTENSELY floral, a huge armload of carnations and jasmine. It really is a wizardly piece of perfumery, and of marketing too.

I think it is the carnation that distracts from the gender bender. A million years ago I was employed as a paralegal to a lawyer who was as mainstream as they come–but he wore Old Spice, which filled his office with the scent of carnation. I don’t think he had a clue how much he was wafting.

The internet at my house was fixed yesterday afternoon. It’s amazing on how dependent you become on it when you don’t have it. Couldn’t stream Netflix, could play video games and quite a few things. Wearing no 5 edp today. I am saving Courtesan for Friday.

SOTD is Terracotta. Maybe I should have saved it for Friday, because I think this is the only true “beachy” perfume I have. Smells like a very nice suntan lotion.

Also, I did not post yesterday, but I wore OJ Tiare (Cristalle on vacation, in my opinion) and a bit of vintage Fidji.

Great choice for the CP, Robin. L’Eau du Gouverneur. smells like a vacation to me.

In Coqui Coqui’s Rosas Frescas, which to my nose is a lemongrass rose–and something I only wear in warmer weather. It is 59 degrees outside, but I am optimistic we will see the mercury rise to north of 65 . . . My perfume is willing it so!

Oops, I think I overapplied my beachy scent today and now it’s cloying and irritating my nose. Sigh. I guess this is what I get for putting on Orchid Soleil when it’s not hot. I’m sure it’ll calm down eventually…

Tomorrow is a day in the scent-free office so I’ll have to wait till I get home to put on perfume. But I will get a free lunch to celebrate the end of a project, which will be a tuna salad sandwich on baguette and a mixed fruit tart, both from a French bakery. Then after work, I’m meeting my coworker who was laid off last month for an early dinner near the office. I’m looking forward to seeing her.

“My mother is a fish.” Faulkner’s famous single sentence chapter. I am a fish too, and I love the teapot but it’s not $150 love.

Lacking imagination today so I’m in EL Bronze Goddess as we head away from the expected 88*F temps to the beach. Stay cool, especially those folks in Arizona and Nevada and other historical hot spots. Geez, people are getting hospitalized left and right in some areas of the country. Crazy. 🥵

Wow, I had to google that, which means it’s time I started re-reading Faulkner? Except, frankly, that’s a young person’s game and I think I probably won’t.

It is indeed unthinkable, the temperatures.

Yeah, Faulkner has such a brutal honesty in his writing. Not for the faint hearted. When I read “As I lay dying” for a lit class, it was, for me, like watching the towers come down on 9/11: horrifying and transfixing at the same time. You want to look away, but you can’t. Difficult emotions ensue…😭. I have no I intention of ever re-reading it, even though I found it fascinating.

I’m accidentally beachy (but northern beachy, not at all tropical) in Maison Crivelli Saltifolia, a lovely, very dry beach rose kind of thing. I found it while I was on a quest to replace a rapidly dwindling decant of Iroaz, another beachy rose scent. Saltifolia and Iroaz aren’t really that similar, but I love them both — Iroaz is rosier and damper than Saltifolia, and Saltifolia is much more mineralic. That salty dryness works well in the heat here in the PNW.

Oh, and a note for Pyramus — we watched the first episode of Severance last night, and I’m hooked! Still getting used to Adam Scott in this very different role, but the show overall is fascinating and compelling. Thanks for the rec!

SotD G&BA Purple Suede, because apsara mentioned it, and I realized I’d not worn my split yet. Style-wise it was a good follow up to yesterday’s Atelier Mimosa Indigo, with “up” being the operative word. I am in a luxurious, happy scent bubble because the florals and the animalics blend so well in this, and it’s as if I’m wearing a fine leather jacket over my perfume. Leather is big here. Normally, I enjoy leather perfumes, but feel they wear me. This skims past that problem.

    Vee, here’s another Kerosene! 🙂

Today is Follow, as opposed to Followed. These are two different interpretations of coffee. Followed was sweet, gourmandy coffee. Today’s Follow is a dry, non-foody, aromatic coffee. Like taking a whiff after you have freshly ground some beans. I like it a lot, but maybe not 100mls worth. I think that’s the only bottle size he makes.

I’m in Terracotta for the cp, and for Use it Up. This is a decant from a generous nster. I’ve made myself a deal that I won’t buy anymore bottles until my decants are gone, and no more samples until my samples are gone. I’m down to about 8 decants, and a couple of those are just for reference, so I’m doing pretty good. I’ll see if I can stick to it!

Started the day with OJ Frangipani and Lucy B Pink Frangipani. The OJ is hanging on, but feeling shy. I reapplied Pink Frangipani, but started feeling a little suffocated by the sweetness, so I oversprayed that with Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil. I’m enjoying the combo.

Wearing Eau Soleil which is very summery and easy to wear.

For once I don’t like the Tuesday teapot which is a good thing as I own way too many of them as it is.

Yesterday I forgot to post by I didn’t forget to wear perfume. The lovely Marions-nous was my choice to start the week.

I did my self tan last night, and after my shower this morning found that my legs were a tad patchy. I got a bit overzealous with the moisturizer on my knees to prevent dark spots and instead the color didn’t adhere at all lol.
To get more even I applied Loving Tan gradual self tanner lotion, which smells really good, like ambery chocolate and has barely any DHA smell.
For the top half of me, I am wearing the last bits of my Miss Dior EdP sample. I am shocked by loving this one. I never vibed with previous versions, and even though I wanted to like the original Miss Dior with the strawberries & popcorn (which would be such a hit today I bet) I didn’t ever wear it. But this new EdP (i think within the last 2 years) is totally for me.
I think I might get a 3.4oz. Which is kinda nuts, but since they change formulations so frequently I am going to go for it. > $200 for 3.4 oz is kind of a deal with perfume these days.

    Happy Teapot Tuesday!
And Happy Mandela Day!We do a Mandela Day charitable activity annually, this year we made and donated 150 Hot Dogs to a senior care facility. We’ve also been busy with a knitting project making knee-blankets for places in need.
    SOTD!
Crabtree&Evelyn Kashmir Musk.Very pretty amber floral with a nice orris note.I did a google search just now to see if they are still around, and the whole sequence of events and why they are basically non-existent now is really sad to me.The Iris perfume was also a firm favorite,so glad I got a bub or 2 when they had their last 50% off at the brick-and-mortar store.
Have a good one guys and girls!

Had an anxiety-inducing trip to the department of motor vehicles this morning to get my Quebec driver’s license back. It was a long wait and I always worry things will go wrong, but my guardian angel was on my shoulder and I came away successful. Yay!!! I am celebrating by going out for an ice cream now. Still wearing Lys du Désert. I think it’s true what they say about going nose-blind, I’ve been wearing the same perfume for so long I can barely smell it except when I first apply.

I don’t have many beach’s scents, but I’m wearing one of my favorite hot-summer ones: Berdoues Assam of India. Like a perfume version of lemon iced tea. 🍋🧊🌱

I can’t think of a beachy scent in my collection, so I chose for today to wear L’Artisan Mure et Musc Extreme. I used to go blackberry picking every summer up north in Michigan and the tart berry note here is a nice memory for me. I don’t have the regular Mure et Musc so can’t compare the two, but this one is juicy and fresh to wear in summertime. I even fantasize that it has a bit of a doughy note so I can imagine the beautiful pie they will be a part of after awhile!–a favorite way to use up blackberries or raspberries.

PS Regrettably, I have had to stop picking wild berries because at some point in later life I became allergic to poison ivy. It never bothered me as a teen but after a few bouts with it I’m quite paranoid about it. Alas! The roadsides and wild fields have become so dangerous now, between poison oak and ivy and deer ticks! Sigh. The final time I had poison ivy was after I’d become allergic and stopped going after berries, but I had a cat who went outside and he used to sit on my shoulder with paws down my back. Well, wouldn’t you know it, I got a swath of itchy rash down my back and could only explain it as coming from the cat!

Poison ivy is nearly nature’s nemesis for me (grizzly bears *are* more dangerous, and I don’t seek the company of spiders). I have a dear neighbor who is totally nonchalant about PI, and vines keep sneaking under our shared fence. I’ve never had a bad case, but Mr. Mossy once did and it lasted for weeks.

I am lucky that I grew up in an area where poison ivy was non-existent.

I do know what it looks like, though, and avoid it. I’ve heard horror stories about poison ivy exposure.

Our roadside blackberries are just starting to fruit — tiny but tasty! But yes they are intertwined with poison ivy. So I only pick what I can reach from the edge of the patch. I’m not very sensitive to poison ivy, but why chance it?

You may want to stay away from touching the skin of fresh mangoes when the sap can transfer to your skin. It has the same substance that makes poison ivy poisonous.

Still beachy, in Guerlain AA Coconut Fizz. I got a cat sitting injury this morning — cut my finger on a can of cat food — had to call my firefighter husband to come patch me up. So all my planned activities for the day went out the window — instead I spent the morning reading a Lord Peter Wimsey mystery, and in the afternoon I watched Clueless (aka Jane Austen’s Emma), which I hadn’t seen in ages. Fun 🙂

SOTD is LVEB Iris Absolu from a sample that the nice Lancome SA gave me. Some nice iris at the beginning. Gets sweeter as time goes on. Still trying to decide on a small bottle at the next GWP. Luckily, she gave me 2 sample vials, so I have plenty to help make the decision. Almost 100 degrees in NW Arkansas. At least we have good AC and some solar panels to help ward off the electric bill. Can’t even contemplate the temps in California or Southern Europe right now.
