Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-July 2023

Posted by Robin on 15 July 2023 105 Comments

We're marking Social Media Giving Day on Saturday and National Ice Cream Day on Sunday with our usual open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you've worn the most so far this summer (or winter!), whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

This week I’ve been working my way through Bastide’s Les Sept Merveilles discovery set of Provence inspired EDTs. Nue au Soleil has been my favorite so far-bergamot, mint, geranium, and mate. If I can’t be in Provence, at least I can smell like I’m there!

That combination of notes sounds wonderful. Mint is under used, imo.

I’m spending the morning in Caleche EDT. It’s an absolutely gorgeous morning here, so Mr. G and I are going to take our coffee and crossword puzzles outside before the temperatures rise too much farther — gonna be a hot one today, so we’re enjoying the coolth while we can. ☀️🔥

Headed to bed in Angel’s Share and looking forward to the brief oblivion of sleep! I’m in a questionable hotel with mediocre A/C in a sketchy neighborhood but T-Rex has already found a friend when she stumbled upon a man cozied up in the bushes. I hope he finds a place to stay cool today. 🥵

I guess I started (Inter?)National Ice Cream Day a little early: it’s a sometimes thing for me but today is one of those times so I got some Ben & Jerry’s churro ice cream and it is HEAVEN. I’m a huge fan of cinnamon in pretty much everything — I even put it in meatballs, stole the idea from a friend of Lebanese extraction — and this ice cream is just brimful with the stuff.

Still doing France Week so today I’m in Hermès Amazone parfum. Gosh it’s good.

yep, yep, we put cinnamon in everything in Greece. Stifado, moussaka, keftedes. Very greek, lebanese and cypriot. I miss it still.

I do like cinnamon in fragrance, but quiet.

I bought the set of three Byredos at the nordies sale, nothing else though. Anyone else succumb to fragrance purchases?

Woke up in a musky mood, so used my Mugler Over the Musk body creme and topped it off with a few spritzes of Innocent. I found a good deal on Ebay for Innocent and the bottle is appealing to me. Innocent feels like a cologne to me. I usually feel let down by even the best fresh scents, but it’s threading the needle for me today. Question for any Innocent fans out there: not including the flankers, there are two different styles of bottles and both are edp. One has full starbursts on the side, and the other has frosted vertical lines which I think are the rays from the star on the cap. I was comparing them on Ebay, and saw both styles with the 6-digit, all-numeric batch code, and in the same volumes. Does anyone know when the change occurred, and which style is the OG?

My bottle is the one with the frosted vertical lines, which I believe to be the first bottle. On the top of the bottle below the sprayer it says Parfums Thierry Mugler. I checked my empty sample that I have saved since 2000 ( lol) and it says the same thing. I have a newer ( by probably 10 years) sample that only says an address. Both samples smell identical to my bottle. I believe Clarins changed the name to just Mugler around 2015/16. That might have been when the bottle changed. It remained on the U.S Mugler website until L’oreal sold the last of it. I don’t believe it was ever made for them. I have never seen any of the flankers.

Very helpful – thank you, lillyjo! I suspected the frosted vertical lines bottle was the older one, but the six-digit, numeric batch code is more recent. Probably means there were a lot of empty bottles to use. I am glad you saved your empty sample – I am a bottle timeline geek, so I get it. My research also indicates that the switch from “Thierry Muger” to “Mugler” took place in 2015/16.

Internet is still out over at my house. Supposedly they will be fixing it Monday. We raised hell because they were supposed to be at our place fixing it yesterday but never showed. Windstream tried to make it our fault but how is it our fault? The bill is paid on time and we are not getting what we paid for half the time. At work wearing no 19 edp and taking advantage of the WiFi.

Another weekend question: did I miss it if anyone else mentioned THE BARBIE MOVIE? Based on the trailers, I rounded up my girlfriend posse (and we are a diverse group) to go, and I am one who has been to exactly one theater movie in the last 5 years. It has the potential to be so much fun! Anyone else? Am I embarrassing myself – NST’ers, I know you will understand? Not to go on, but I totally get “Barbieheimer.”

my mom took us to Woolworths? Kresges? and bought our Barbies when they came out.
I kept mine pristine and sold her in her case and her wedding gown and bought two tickets to Berlin and brought home a piece of the Berlin Wall that had just come down a few months prior. Its here on a bookshelf.

My sister on the other hand, had a child, and that child tore Barbie apart as kids will do. That child is now a girl dad taking his girls to see Taylor Swift.

My sister had the original Barbie and case. When I was 8, Mattel released the Twist n Turn waist Barbie; you could get one when you traded in your original Barbie. My sister has never forgiven me! 😂 My daughter got all the Barbies to play with and they are all pretty rough now.

I want to see the Barbie movie too, it looks like a blast! When I was little, my mom refused to buy a Barbie doll for me so I saved my money for what felt like ages so I could get one myself. After the initial thrill of putting all her different outfits on her, I didn’t find her much fun to play with. But the movie looks fun for sure.

Starting a week of stay-cation during which my plans include some cleaning and organizing and some much needed loafing at home. I also wanted to exercise but the 104 degree forecast for the week is quite a bummer. I will need to get out early and do my loafing later.

Wearing 2 samples: Henry Rose Sheep’s Clothing and MFK A la Rose. Sheep’s Clothing is almost exactly like Glossier You to me, but with much less staying power. I ended up layering the A la Rose over it and the combination is quite good, as the musky background of the Sheep’s Clothing softens the edge of the rose. Now I need to find a rose scent that is like the combination.

Husband and son will be grilling in the 100 degree heat. Ugh! Tomorrow I am returning to my slow cooker experimenting and will do chicken tikka masala in the slow cooker.

SOTD = Jo Malone Cade & Cedarwood

Cedar, juniper and vanilla. Overall nice soapy feel to it! 😍

Had a nice All You Can Eat brunch with family and friends. Food was great as usual although I think the restaurant got the better of us because we were careful not to overindulge.

I also attended just for a little while my next door neighbors’ house warming party. I was stressing out (I know I shouldn’t) as to what gift to bring and I finally decided on a nice bottle of red wine 🍷.

Hallelujah! It is 75 degrees out. Blessed warmth. I am hot in a t-shirt and sweats. Joy. Joy. Joy. Spent the afternoon deep cleaning our bird feeders. There are some very happy feathered friends chirping away out back.

Tested negative for COVID for three days in a row. Whew.

    Perfume? OJ Prive.

Yesterday I went to Nordstrom’s for their Anniversary Sale. Truth be told, I needed some new items of lingerie. Then, since that is on the top floor next to their fancy restaurant, I decided to have lunch there and got an amazingly delicious fish & chips platter with the most gorgeous halibut in the fish, yummy! After that I went downstairs and checked out perfume offerings, and after skin-testing three different scents from Parfums de Marly and liking them all, opted for their sale special, a Nordie’s exclusive: Delina in a boxed set of EdP, body oil, and shower gel. I’ve used them all today and can report that everything is satisfactory. I was dubious about the oil, but my skin is very dry right now and it went on nicely and has not retained any oily or sticky quality at all–it just made my arms and legs softer. This is a gentle powdery rose scent with added dimensions from cashmeran, nutmeg, rhubarb, and lychee fruit. It envelops you in a kind of plush aura that is just plain pretty and not one bit heavy. I might make it my standard summer fragrance! (The other two I like are Safanad and Valaya, but there were no deals on those so I decided to go for the one I’d get the. most bang for my buck with.

I must say Delina has been on my radar as well.I test it every time I’m at Skins, just need to pull the trigger already!(I love the 5x10ml discovery sets they do as well).

          It is online, here: https://www.nordstrom.com/sr?origin=keywordsearch&keyword=delina

It is still the early preview part of the sale for cardmembers only. If you have their card you can buy it now. I think it opens officially tomorrow (Monday).

I’m afraid we did National Ice Cream day early, as Ockeghem Teen had three ice creams yesterday. But then, some news outlets also claimed it was 48C on the Acropolis yesterday afternoon. (I think it was closer to 40-41C, actually.)

I wore more Sur le Nil yesterday, and will probably wear it again today. If I had a bottle of 4711, it’d be perfect for this weather, but it’s at home. Thinking I may saunter over to a hotel nearby and try some Greek perfumes, if they’re open today.

Yesterday the SA at Nordies gave me two nice carded samples with my Delina purchase: Valaya, the newest one (I think), and Delina Exclusif. I just sprayed a lot of the latter on my wrists and wow is it potent. It’s different from the original with a bigger kick and more sillage. I find it has more depth from the fruit. Fragrantica lists bergamot but on the sample card it gives grapefruit. There’s also lychee, incense and vet over. This stuff is too expensive but you won’t have to use much to have a big impact!

Hey y’all! I went blueberry picking today and came home with over 10 pounds of delicious berries. I’ll have to freeze some of them for later. I was super sweaty and covered in sunscreen and bug spray when I got home, so I just took a shower and am commando so far. I’m having allergies so might not wear anything tonight.

I didn’t write last week, but joined some of you in Shalimar on Friday :).
