Thursday scent of the day 7/13

Posted by Robin on 13 July 2023 167 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy National French Fries Day, plus a very happy 83rd to Sir Patrick Stewart! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Parfums de Nicolaï Balle de Match, aka L'Eau de Sport.

Reminder: 7/14 is Bastille Day. See if you might possibly have anything French in your collection? Extra points for extra-French-ness, or for silly perfume Frenchification. (This is a repeat from 2017).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am in Goutal Eau du Sud. According to some websites, it was inspired by Annick Goutal’s home town, Aix-En-Provence. So maybe some extra points since this scent is about South of France?

    This is really beautiful

Having a weak moment for bronzers and somehow ended up taking home an Hermes one. The shade is nice, packaging is cheap feeling but the product inside is nice on the skin

And as a follow-up, I am liking the Westman Atelier Body Butter Bronzer — the packaging of which must represent 75% of the cost. It seems to give me the little bit of color I think my face needs, now that my hair is so silver.

Today I’m a little Samsara, my second-favourite Guerlain ever (after Mitsouko). Totally in the mood for that woody glow.

You smell wonderful – Samsara edt is tied with Iris Torrefie as my favorite Guerlain. That’s a big statement for me to make, because I delight in **so** many Guerlains. I’ll respectfully mention Mitsouko is one of the few that has yet to sing out for me – curious!

I think that happens to most everybody. I tried for so long to get Méchant Loup to love me but every time it says, “No. Begone.” In print it’s as if it were made for me, but on the skin it’s just awful. No idea why.

Mitsouko, though: it had my number from the get-go.

I am proud to say that I do believe Méchant Loup sings on me. As proof I can say that my long-time French philosophy professor friend was visiting me when we went shopping at Neiman-Marcus and he definitely approved. In fact he insisted that I must “buy the big one” (“beeg one”) and not the smaller-sized bottle they also had!

That’s a great one for the heat, you smell fantastic!

I ended up getting a ginormous bottle a few years ago because I heard it was discontinued. Then my sister gave me her bottle; hers may be a bit older as its in a frosted bottle; mine is in clear glass. It’s a summer staple!

I love it! It seems like such a realistic grapefruit scent, like cutting one open. I test-sprayed it on at bedtime the day it arrived. It didn’t last super long but I only sprayed a couple times.

The next day I applied a bit of BBW grapefruit lotion on my arms and legs to try to make it last a bit longer. Glad that I got 2 travel sprays because it’s not on the website any longer.

When my vintage Shalimar faded yesterday, I switched over to the original Coco. After my shower today, I am going to be in Sarrasins. I have the hankering for a skanky jasmine and leather combo. Spent the morning paying some bills and made a Walmart pickup order. Just a boring day of chores and errands. On a good note, I finished those 2 candles and started a new one today.

My sotd is Diptyque Olio hair mist, which means I was back at the dentist this morning. To replace my crown I have 2 choices. A $5000 dollar implant or the much cheaper option of a partial. I don’t like either option but it’s the tooth next to my front tooth. I’m going with the partial. Does anyone have experience with partials?

    • Dawn says:

The way a dentist explained it to me is that you get a 30 year shelf life with an implant and about 10 to 15 years for a partial. The younger you are, the implant is the better choice. With a partial, you lose bone structure and with an implant, you don’t have so much of that problem. I personally would go the implant route.

Sorry to hear that lillyjo. If you can swing, I second dawn’s rec, but I know it’s very expensive. I will never understand why dental care is not covered by medical insurance…🤨

There’s no way for me to swing it, especially since I have other teeth that will need work in the foreseeable future. I just want to cry. Medical insurance says it’s cosmetic and that’s why it’s not covered but it seems to me that you need teeth to eat. I also heard that sometimes cosmetic procedures are covered. Idk…

Ugh! I ended up not getting an implant myself for various reasons, the main one being the cost. Dental health is clearly and scientifically proven to impact overall health. Insurance companies are money making machines, just like hospitals. The bottom line is always about how much money that can make, always at the expense of individuals health and bank account. Totally sucks. 👎🏼

I’m wearing the delightful HdP Colette 1873. I own a couple of their other scents but this is the only one that’s really good for hot weather. Imagine my surprise when I looked for it in my little perfume cabinet and discovered that I have two bottles of it! Now how did that happen, I wonder? I”m not the type who buys BOB’s. It just was some kind of a mistake.

On another subject, I am toiling to write a memorial notice of my professional friend who recently died of breast cancer, and there are so many achievements to tell about from her life that my piece is reading too much like a stodgy summary and altogether failing to capture what a gracious and imaginative person she really was. I think I’ll go out for a little lunch break and see if I can start all over again because the current approach isn’t fulfilling the mission.

Maybe simplify? Make it really personal as in what her impact on you was professionally ( which would acknowledge and embrace her achievements, CV , publications) and what she meant personally ( generous woman, sharing, funny etc.) and what you feel when you think of her. She is clearly deep in your thoughts and memories and experiences.

There’s a heat wave coming through Saturday so this morning I boiled some shrimp to make a salad later on. I might eat salad of some sort the remainder of the week. Today’s Kerosene is Broken Theories, a nice incense but I have enough incense already.
Yesterday I dropped my glasses and as I was going to pick them up I stepped on them, so there’s a visit to the optometrist coming soon. I probably also need a new prescription, it’s been a few years.

I did that with a pair of sunglasses recently – got them out of my bag to put on, dropped them and stepped on them before I could stop myself! Fortunately, they were cheap ones from a local chain store and I was able to get another pair, I hope your optometrist visit isn’t too expensive.

I’m in CPLS, and drained the decant. Not really the thing for this hot weather, but somehow it’s singing.

Went to a consignment store with a friend and finally found a pair of white shorts. Who knew it was so hard to find white shorts? Most of them are too transparent, but these were heavier in weight. They also had a little bitty stain, and I wheedled a discount. 👍🏻

Slogging through the heat and claiming a CP point in Lolita Lempicka Green Lover today. Fragrantica doesn’t list licorice as a note, but I certainly get it here. To me this is a like a shaving cream + creamsicle version of regular LL; creamy but in a refreshing way.

Tea this whole week has been Chocolate Puer, which tastes jut as good warm/luke-warm as it does hot. That is about as close to “iced” I’ll get with my tea. 😀

It’s a public holiday here, Matariki, the Māori new year. It marks the rising of the Pleiades star cluster.
I’m testing my sample of PdN’s Bois Bélize Intense. I’ve just read a rave review on Fragrantica, and I can’t detect all those notes! However, it is a really nice light woody scent, it isn’t intense.
I’m another one suffering the shock of a dental bill. I had to get a crown replaced and that was quite a few perfume FBs. Still, the previous crown lasted 20 years and the dentist said this one should last longer, so the per annum cost isn’t so bad if I take a long term view.

SOTD is Marissa Zappos Petrichor, from an NST split. I love it. Not sure where she is from, but I think she did live/work/study in Paris, so some points for me. And the only other two fragrances I brought with me to MN are Cristalle Eau Verte and Mr. Humor’s Holiday, so CP compliant im spite of myself!

Today is my FIL’s 99th birthday! We will be video chatting in a little while so that our grandson can “meet” his great-grandpa. This is far from my FIL’s first great-grand — and he will have seven great-great-grandchildren by the end of this year — but he has such a soft spot for Mr. Skal that I think he is extra-pleased.

I’m looking at snowy mountains in the distance and a clear blue sky, though it’s cold. I’m away from home and have seen the first jonquils and daffodils and snowdrops in flower which is lovely, also a magnolia I flower. About a month ahead of where I live. Planning an outing to the sea later. So nice to stretch out. I have “ stolen” a spray of my SIL’s Mademoiselle , thinking it wouldn’t be obvious…but, it is. Oops.

Late today, wearing Chanel Paris-Paris. So nice for summer.

We just finished Larry the cat’s annual haircut (he gets terrible mats in the late spring/summer) and me, Mr ringthing and Larry are all exhausted. Kitty looks much more comfortable and he got Fancy Feast which is his absolute favorite food. No biting and only minor hissing this year. Whew! After a shower, I’m going for a restorative blast of Shalimar.
Going back now to read the comments.

Aw, poor Larry the Cat. One of ours also requires a summer cut, but we hand her off to a professional cat whisperer who shows up at the door, whisks her away to their air conditioned trailer parked out front and brings her back all shorn and sleek an hour or so later.

That would be fantastic. The vet used to do it, we could drop him off, but they would put him under anesthesia and it got really expensive. During covid, they decided to stop grooming cats altogether and there is no one else that does it, so we bought clippers and watched YouTube.

SOTD = Mad et Len Petits Papiers

❤️ and of course, points. I know someone here recently mentioned that it didn’t work for her but anyway, this is what makes this place very interesting.

I participated in the Prime Day deals. I’m not so sure they were deals. I got an air cleaner (my 5th one so I now have one for every room), a Waterpik flosser, an oscillating fan and some Kindle books. Other than the air cleaner and the Kindle books, the other items were going to take until August to get here!

    Posting late today!

I finally got my hair cut! It’s been 10 months since my previous one. I figured I’d go all out this time and get some highlights as well. I also told my stylist about my impending life changes. I am going to miss her a lot. I’ve been going to her since the late 1990’s. 😿

And on the “Wasn’t expecting THAT” front: I saw a bald eagle flying over an Interstate highway yesterday afternoon! I’d only ever seen them out West. 🦅
