Wednesday scent of the day 6/28

Posted by Robin on 28 June 2023 149 Comments

It's Hump Day, National Paul Bunyan Day and Tau Day. Birthdays: Henry VIII, Peter Paul Rubens, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Richard Rodgers, Mel Brooks and Gilda Radner. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking points in April Aromatics Liquid Dreams.

Reminder: on 6/30, we're off to Germany (you can do a day or whole week, as always). Wear a perfume by a German brand (Escada? Hugo Boss? Jil Sander? Mäurer & Wirtz / 4711?) or named for a place in Germany, or that you bought in Germany, or whatever you can think of to fit the theme. Suggested by ockeghem and voted for by carole and chocolatemarzipan8.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Still haven’t made it to Germany but I did complete my first 12 hour shift. Planning on catching a few hours sleep and then heading to the coast for some cooler weather! 🏖️

SOTD is that little workhorse known as Omnia.

    Happy Humpday to all!

Germany, day 3: 4711 Acqua Colonia Blood Orange & Basil, part of a set of 5 minis (the first of the series, I think, all citrus-plus-accent) that I picked up at some department store in Berlin. This one is my favourite of the five.

And the one I should try if I ever use up the Guerlain Mandarine Basilic, I guess.

At least one reviewer on Fragrantica said the 4711 is inferior to the Guerlain, which I’ve never tried so I couldn’t say. It certainly doesn’t have much lasting power, a couple of solid hours, but most of the Acqua Colonia scents don’t (though the same is true of the Aqua Allegoria line, in my experience). I don’t consider that a major flaw, because citrus colognes in general are airy and evanescent. Enjoy it while you can, I say.

    Hi all!

I only have three perfumes for this CP, so I am starting it today. SOTD is Philly&Phill (German house) Midnight on Max Street (Emotional Oud). Amber/vanilla/oud which at some point morphs into dry cinnamon/oud. Fun!

On Monday I met with a dentist specializing in restorative dentistry. I have a number of teeth that underwent root canal treatment years ago. One tooth is really badly damaged (maybe 75% filling), and four years ago my regular dentist said that I can continue to choose fillings over crowns, but there is a serious risk of losing that tooth. When I lived in Sweden for a year I kept thinking that if the tooth gets split, I will just have to have it removed and live without it until I can afford an implant. A crown should protect it.
And even back then, four years ago, my dentist told me that I actually need to put crowns on two teeth on that side, and now I am told that it is actually three. And I can’t have only one or only two crowns on that side, because it may lead to occlusion issues or filling damage.
So, I am putting off a new appointment, because: 1) this is so expensive! 2) what if I don’t like the crowns? 3) what if I don’t have money to replace them in 7-10 years? I can afford only metal-ceramic (PFM) crowns, not zirconium. Have you guys had a good experience with them?

I’ve never heard of zirconium in dental work, mine are all ceramic. I have one or two crowns, they are expensive but much less so than implants. I know this a really bad time for you to need expensive dental work, I hope it works out for you that you can get done what needs to be done.

Dental health is directly tied to cardiac health, and other aspects of health as well. I’m not sure about where you are, but here many dentists will set you up with a payment plan. I would certainly ask about that. Not too many people can afford a boatload of dental work all at once. Focus on the tooth most in need first and don’t stress yourself thinking of the others until you have the first one completed.

Talk directly to the dentist, because most are willing to do whatever it takes to save teeth and optimize dental health. If he/she refers you to the office manager, fine, but ask the dr about a payment plan first! Good luck!

I have a few crowns, I notice them so little that I can’t even remember how many I have. I think they are all ceramic.

I was in the process of getting an implant for the one tooth I lost completely earlier this year, but it looks like it will be so expensive I can’t do it…happen to have a dentist appt this afternoon and going to see what the alternatives are.

      Good luck!

A bridge would be cheaper. Not cheap (it would necessitate 2 crowns), but cheaper. I am still thinking it through!

        Ugh, sorry. Phone.

I have seven or eight crowns. We had very poor dental care when I was a kid, prior to the era of fluoride treatments, and our water was not fluoridated. Plus pretty bad genetics on this front. They are expensive, but, as Robin wrote, I don’t even notice them now. There is usually an adjustment over the first couple of weeks after the final crown is in, but then it should be almost unnoticeable. Most of mine are porcelain(?) but I do have two gold ones in the back.

I think Deva’s advice is good: ask about payment plans, and see if you can start with the tooth most in need. At the same time, I know that norms of dental care vary a lot around the world (I got great emergency care in Rome but the whole process was quite different from what I am used to here in the US). You are dealing with so much right now, Glannys, that I hope you are able to get some relief for your teeth.

I’ve got two ceramic crowns, for the same reason of so much filling (done when I was a child) my teeth were barely holding together. I never notice them and they are still going strong after 20 years.

I have 3 ceramic crowns. Two of them are on live teeth, since I couldn’t get fillings in them anymore. The last one covers my only root canal. I have to floss a little more often than usual and that’s about it.

I’m wearing Smell Bent Sunshine Mama’s Spiced Tea today. I was trying to finish up a manufacturer’s decant of Sunshine, but it had degraded to the point that it was only an oil. Normally when this happens I find the oil is still well scented so I will use it. However, this oil had no scent as far as I could tell.

But I wonder, do some dogs mind perfume?

Jiji and austenfan were talking about Strausbourg yesterday, and I was reminded that is the birthplace of one Manfred Thierry Mugler. His name suggests that he shared French and German heritage. So, I’m claiming CP point with Aura Eau Sensuelle, and some Aura body creme. The body creme is like the edp, but does go with the ES ok. We are having our smokiest day yet this Summer. With some cooler air came the smoke starting yesterday, giving a distinct haze and slight smokey smell. We are not anything like Chicago, but we are about 250 miles South of there.

It does have the DNA. More vanilla-sweet, perhaps. But, having not worn it in a while, I think using it today and also using the body creme is thwarting my best analysis. I remember liking it the best of the three when it first came out. Then I sampled Aura edt and finally went back to the edp (which did not appeal to me at first). Each bolstered my fondness for the other. My motto with Mugler originals is: “resistance is futile.”

I’m in Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose today. CP points because I bought it in Germany, and vacation points because Paestum was originally a Greek settlement in Italy. 🙂

Looking forward to my vacation but I’m already starting the stress dreams about being at the airport and not having everything packed and losing my child. I’m actually in good shape for packing but I think everything’s a bit compounded by the fact that I have to have our master bath cleaned out completely before we go, as well, due to the reno.

I took Carole’s advice in a quick break between endless meetings this morning (someone back East rescheduled one for 8 a.m. …at 7:45 a.m. …like I was just online and would see it. Ahem). My quick break is walking a few blocks down a nearby street and looking at all the trees and flowers, and listening to the birds.

I’m wearing Ys Uzac’s Satin Doll. I think Ys Uzac is a Swiss perfume house, so partial CP points as Switzerland again borders Germany and it’s most important language is German, well actually Swiss German, but that seems close enough.
Satin Doll is a lovely tuberose iris and is one of those sleeper scents, it doesn’t move the earth, but is so very, very wearable.

Wearing Parle Moi de Parfum Orris Tattoo.

Crazy, busy day working outside. I decided to just take a break and walked a few blocks to Bath & Body Works to see what was left from the Semi Annual Sale. Very few items in the back of the store. All the autumn line is already in full display, which caused me some anxiety. I am already thinking that days are getting shorter, and honestly I am not ready yet to be exposed to the fall season in any way. A couple of more weeks and I am sure Christmas items will be also out in many stores. Well, I guess it is better for now to enjoy my summer iced lemonade and the warm, muggy walk outside.

    Happy Wednesday! 🌞

Lazy, of a sort. More alcoholic, was the word on the street — ex-lawyers who drank all day and turned up at strata meetings to complain at great length that the strata expected them to pay strata fees. Fun with stratas — fortunately my current one is lovely.

A lot of “summer weather” showed up in April here. The seasons have been really scrambled this year.

Didn’t get around to posting yesterday, but I wore the delightful gourmand PC02 by Biehl Parfumkunstwerke. I should really pull that one out more, especially in fall and winter. It’s like a honeyed burnt sugar with woods. Today I’m in 4711 Acqua Colonia Lemon & Ginger since it’s our warmest day of the week either a high of 78. I keep this perfume in the fridge (the only one I do that with) to have it as a hot weather spritzer. It’s not very warm out yet, so I’m sure I’ll go to the fridge for a refresh later when it heats up.

Last night I tried my Luckyscent sample of Vero Profumo Mito Voile d’Extrait. It is not the Mito I remember when I had an EDP decant. It starts off with prominent green notes of galbanum and hyacinth with floral and fruity undertones, and then develops into full blown fruity tuberose. It confused me when I woke up in the middle of the night. What was I smelling so strongly? Oh, apparently my green perfume turned into strong tuberose! I loved the hesperidic greenness of the EDP and don’t really need any more fruity tuberose so unfortunately, but fortunately for my wallet, this reissue is a pass for me. And just to be clear I never sniffed the old Voile d’Extrait.

Interesting. I did try the old Mito VdE, but can’t recall it clearly. I thought it was very similar to the EdP, but I preferred that and have a FB. I’ve received my sample of Rubj VdE, which I’d never smelled before. It matches the comments on Fragrantica about the earlier version, but it’s quite light. It seems very different to the Rubj EdP, which I also have and much prefer.
It will be interesting to see comments from people who are more familiar with the older versions.

As I’ve now read some old reviews of the VdE, it does seem to have had prominent tuberose and fruits back then, but those notes don’t show up at all for the EDP. I’m also operating on my memory of having not smelled the EDP in like 7 or 8 years, at least. I do hope they’ll reissue the EDP at some point and then I’ll retry it. I had been considering a bottle at the time that they all sold out and then disappeared.

Kayali Pistachio today, just a single spray because I want to throw on something else later. Thought I would not like it, because the Laura Mercier Pistachio scent made me gag, but I bought a mini cause it’s really fun. It is definitely a sweet scent, but it isn’t particularly sugary. More like a soft whipped cream sweetness.

We have really entered the sodden grey days when everywhere is kind of bleak and the trees stark, with drops of water hanging from the branches. Might get snow this weekend which would brighten things. The national flower of Germany is cornflowers, associated with the Prussians ( hence the colour Prussian Blue) so I’m wearing JM Oat and Cornflower. Where I lived, in Bavaria, the fields were planted in sunflowers and the hillsides in grape vines so it was a very yellow landscape. But I love cornflowers.

Wearing FM Une Fleur de Cassie from a travel spray I bought on sale at Harrods. I have been missing it lately and was so glad to find it again.

On a Penhaligon’s note, someone posted with concerns about several boutiques closing and what that means for the brand. I was told by 2 reliable sources in the UK that they are merely consolidating their stores in central locations and department stores to save money on rent and maximize sales. And that overall the brand is still doing well.

Along with homemade brine pickels and fresh horseradish. I learned it all from watching her in her kitchen basement. My grandmother did not speak much English but some things don’t need a recipe.

Yes Sheldrake is great, have been sponsoring wee ellys and the occasional baby rhino for long time.

I’m earning CP points in Escada 2005. Never would I have guessed that Escada was a German brand! In fact I’d basically forgotten that I even had this bottle until I went searching in my poorly organized (but somewhat alphabetized) perfume shelves and found it. I’ve had it since forever and it’s about half full and smells fine, though to be honest I can’t remember how it used to smell. This is the very simple bottle with a sort of green cast to it (or green juice?) with just a little hot pink dot under the name in white. I can’t find any markings of the strength of it. I looked it up on Fragrantica and it’s got a boatload of ingredients but smells mostly like a fresh citrusy green scent to me now, which is perfect for our hellish weather. In fact I wore it yesterday too but never got around to posting. I’m still trying to chase down the source of my one air conditioning unit’s leak, but fortunately managed to get a plumber to come this afternoon (this is what the a/c repairman recommended after coming here twice). We are fortunate not to have the Canadian wildfire smoke that so many are suffering from now but we can’t really go outside anyway (at least not us who are in “the elderly” category).

I am still sorting through some Profumum Roma samples I bought this spring. I know I’ve tested them all but I don’t really have any memory or association with any of them, which is starting to make less sense as I’m re-testing them and finding they smell a lot like scents I already own or have worn in the past.

Anyway, I only put perfume on in earnest a bit ago, and am retesting, or by the looks of what’s left in the vial, wearing not for the first time, Sabbia Bianca. Since this smells exactly like Fracas, which I have in both vintage and modern formats, and wear every spring and summer, I’m not sure how I had no association to go by until now. *shrugs*

I’m feeling yesterday’s TDAP vaccine a little bit today. (My COVID boosters hurt a lot more than this shot did.) So I decided to take it easy today.

SOTD = back in Korres Guava lotion.

Korres sent out an email touting 4 new perfumes in their line earlier today. The most interesting one for me, based on the written description, was Avgoustos: “The raw scent of the first figs we cut in August.”

The others are Kyma, Sikinos, and Anthos.

The shot didn’t sting, either. My left arm is just a little sore.

I can’t remember exactly when I had my previous tetanus shot. Definitely much longer than 10 years ago. There are some other vaccinations I should get, but those will get taken care of at a later time.

I haven’t been wearing any perfume since the beginning of May. All my bottles are still packed away. I did that in preparation for getting the house painted.
