Wednesday scent of the day 6/21

Posted by Robin on 21 June 2023 249 Comments

It’s Hump Day! Plus, happy solstice and enjoy the longest day of the year (if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, that is). Also on the docket, World Music Day and the International Day of Yoga. What fragrance are you wearing?

Right now I'm trying to let go of my anger after a 1 hour call with the customer service people at my internet service provider. The fragrance to keep me from blowing my top: Aftelier Candide. (Seriously, as soon as I sprayed it on I felt better.)

Reminder: 6/23 is National Let It Go Day. Wear a perfume that works in the way the day is intended...that is, that helps you let go of negative feelings from the past. OR, wear a perfume you've been hoarding, OR, thunk (use up) a bottle or sample, OR, come up with some other creative take on the theme of letting go.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m now in the warm embrace of 24 Faubourg after spending the morning in Eau de néroli doré.

I love these “golden” scents from Hermès, with L’Ambre des Merveilles making up the trio.

I loved my sample of NdN. Think my favourite is Neroli Portofino-I even have a tube of the body cream, and the scented oil, and it lasts forever on me. You smell great!

I love Neroli Portofino as well-perfect summer scent. I also love Rose Prick

NdN is wearing on me like a very dark rose..

It was just fine. We are eating through the trunk freezer in order to get rid of it (we currently have 2 refrigerators and a trunk freezer for 2 people, ha) and so last night was roast turkey thighs in dijon mustard & thyme. It was not a Tom Ford sort of dinner so I’m glad you are keeping standards up here 🙂

Hmm, I once read an interview with Tom Ford wherein he assured the reporter that the donut and coffee he was having for breakfast were not just so he’d look all “regular guy!” Also I am twins in needing to keep looking to our freezer for meals!

I told myself I wouldn’t buy anything that must go in the freezer. You can tell I failed miserably.

Good news though! It’s garbage day tomorrow so you may have just given me the motivation to get rid of some stuff!

I exercise my best self-control with fresh seafood. If I don’t *know* I will cook it the same or next day after I buy it, I don’t buy it. But chicken and pork tend to hand around in the freezer, as does fresh fruit. :/

Orchid Soleil, Noir pour Femme (or words to that effect,) and Cafe Rose are the only TFs I’ve ever worn with any regularity but it looks like all have been discontinued? A peek at the TF website & sephora would seem to indicate that the line’s been more or less rehauled, which I also recall happening 6 or 7 years ago. Out with the old; in with the new.

I have a 30mL bottle of Black Orchid but rarely wear it. That one is almost masculine on me. No flowers at all.

    Happy solstice!

Today I wanted something with rose, so I thunked my sample of Lancome Peut-Etre. It is a sweet powdery rose on me, with a bit of lipstick iris at some point. It smells innocent and peaceful, so I think it works as an anti-negativity perfume too.
It is a soft skin scent with zero sillage (at least not that I noticed ). I sprayed it about four hours ago, and now it is almost gone. So I probably will add another scent soon.

That was a nice one, along with some others from the same line. They seemed to appear then disappear pretty quickly here in the states, though. I considered buying a smaller bottle of Peut-Etre but could never find one to buy so gave up.

You smell(ed) delightful and charming! 🙂

I think the scent itself is lovely, but I had to bury my nose in my arm to smell it – it sits too close to the skin for my liking. But it is for the best – I have too many perfumes, so at least I am not tempted to get this one. 😁

First day of summer! I wanted to wear something breezy and fresh, and I don’t have too many of those — they’re sort of the exact opposite of what I love most — but there’s always the infinite foliage of Yves Rocher Homme Nature (which I have had for so long that the printing is starting to wear off the bottle). It’s so green!

It does not feel like the first day of summer here and we are looking at 10 days of rain, so I’m pouting just a wee bit. Maybe tomorrow I will think of a let-it-go green.

It’s looking more or less the same where I am. It’s actually uncharacteristically rainy today. Like, not dramatic or stormy summer rain – just drizzly, wet, and unseasonably cool.

Robin, if it’s any help, the 10-day forecasts here are so often wrong that I don’t pay much attention to them anymore. For instance, last week’s forecast for tomorrow was 90. Now it says 79. So it might very well be sunny for you! ☀️
        Happy Solstice!

    Hello!

I will be working on thunking my decants this week and Letting Go of my desire to purchase full bottles of them. SOTD is Chanel No. 22 EDP. I already have a vintage bottle of the EDT so I really don’t need a bottle of this, but I still enjoy it in a slightly different way! The EDP is sweeter and more full bodied than the EDT but both are lovely still the same.

At the office where there is always renovations and construction, lots of noise and dust, on top of that, it is cold like crazy, apparently they can’t adjust the level of air conditioning.

I think the low fogs that have kept us cool during May and June are gone and summer is indeed here in SoCal.

Usually the agapanthus bloom on my birthday in early May, but the just popped open this weekend in all their purple glory.

I have a massage after work and then I want to go for a bike ride, and then do some yoga- all my favourite things on the Summer Solstice. I find both solstices so special-for no particular reason lol I just really enjoy them.

Shalimar Eau de Cologne, after a number of days wearing various Nicolai summer scents. This Shalimar version managed to wipe away my fear of Shalimar that developed after a unfortunate over-spraying incident. The fear was real.

Heading out to our backyard to transfer some flowers to some pots. Then I’ll start my remote work around noon or so.

I keep wishing I could take notes at the market about customer interactions. In most cases, people are really good natured. But they can be very amusing. (I was recently quite thrilled to handle the checkout for one of the Packers football players.)

First day of Summer! It’s going to be around 90 degrees today. Not complaining! Right now I am doing laundry and light(!) House cleaning. Later, the kids and I are going to my sister’s to have cake( please be chocolate) tomorrow is my daughter’s birthday and we will do some birthday shopping for her.
My sotd is Alien eau Sublime with regular Alien hair mist in my hair. This is a great smelling and long lasting hair mist. I really didn’t even have to add a perfume.

I am envious of all you living through warm weather. Outside it is a sunny and crisp 57!

Perfume this morning is Miller Harris Scherzo hair mist. Love it!

And in my effort to let go of perfumes that I feel ambivalent about, I am offering, CONUS only (sorry!), a freebie to anyone who comments on NST:

BDK’s Wood Jasmin, 100 ml bottle, about 85% full.

Please let me know here if you would like it, and then email me at ann dottie eisenberg attagirl comcast dottie net.

I think my pre-shower CP scent will be Calyx — and if it makes me sneeze/gives me a headache (it was my signature scent in my early 20s, then started causing me problems), it will be time to Let it Go.

Robin, sorry about the ISP woes. We need to switch and it’s one of those things I keep not getting done because it’s always so stressful — but it’s costing us money to stay with $pectrum.

I am letting go by finishing a sample of Hermes Eau Des Merveilles. I love it, but I feel like I have to reapply every 3-4 hours with this scent? Is this normal or is it just me? My skin doesn’t usually eat up perfume. I have bought full bottles before of this and then later think that it I can’t smell it.

Scent: trying out Matiere Premiere’s Neroli Oranger. No verdict, should probably pour sample into a spray.

Let it go: a loaded topic! Perfume-wise, I have bottles that really should find new homes. I would prefer for them to arrange this for themselves, but they aren’t taking the proper initiative.

On a life front, I should probably be letting go of some Jalapeno Lime corn chips that are both joyous and calorific. I’m opting for joy at the moment

Observation: I’m grateful that there are good decant services out there. I only buy 5ml once I’m pretty sure I really want to dig in on a fragrance, and I’ve kept it under control so far. (I can easily see how this could go sideways, though)

    Have a great day!

Happy summer! It’s been in the high 80s low 90sF but so dry that it drops into the low 60s at night. We’re trying to live without AC and just have the windows open with fans. It’s inexplicably windy outside so this arrangement is working so far. I’m wearing Harvest Mouse from a sample that will probably be thunked this week. It smells kind of fruity today.

Thunk! Or should I say THUNK? This was (!) the 200 mL bottle from which I did a split three (!) years ago and had some left over. Of course I thought I would be all done with the bottle 2 years ago but one thing led to another and I neglected this bottle. No worries as I do have a personal 75 mL which I had already dipped into because I just have no discipline!

The winter solstice happened at 2.57am today so the days will soon gain a minute although the coldest temperatures are always July and August. I sometimes notice bumble bees lying inert on the fort paths and garden. They look dead but often they are just cold and if you pick them up and hold them for a bit they revive with the heat. Kind of a miracle really, letting them go and watching them fly away. Wearing smoked ambergris, three hours till sunrise!

I’m not completely convinced that this ( image in painting ) would be ambergris. I would expect it to be frankincense or another resin. So I will investigate!

Wow, what a gorgeous painting! Sargent! I love all those whites! Thank you. Also, I didn’t know about that perfume, and must investigate.

I did a bit of research on ambergris at one point mainly to find out if it’s legal in Canada (I was reading up after trying Squid, which uses synthetic ambergris). Apparently it is. Actually treatment of it differs a lot by countries: https://us.whales.org/2015/09/10/ambergris-lucky-lucrative-and-legal/

This reminds me that when I was trying perfumes yesterday one was described as including a note called “vegan musk.” There’s a new one on me! (I would not have put these two words together, for fairly obvious reasons!)

You can sell ambergris here, it’s not illegal ( like USA and Australia). Thanks for your article. One of the interesting / sad things about ambergris is the change in its composition. It used to form around squid beaks ( that were coughed up rather than digested) but now quite a bit of ambergris forms around plastic and plastic ropes.

Boo on the ISP. They NEVER make it easy, do they?

I’m letting it go by proxy today in Tauer Les Années 25 from one of the mini bottles. I should use this up because I know there have been reports of these bottles evaporating quickly, but thankfully I haven’t had that issue with this one. I did, however, blow through Bis (may have had evaporation issues), so I am remembering it with the original.

Summer solstice? What summer solstice? I wore a fleece for my jog this morning. It’s that dark, moody overcast outside. But…this is typical, really. Vancouver rarely gets the memo that it’s summer until the beginning of July. And I’ll take this over the heat wave two years ago at this time when we had to move to a hotel for air conditioning.

Yeah. But Spring was weird here as well… several high temperatures that broke records and felt like Summer, especially in April. 🤔

Looks like there might be a persistent stormy pattern in my area for the next 7 to 10 days.

Wearing the smallest spritz of NV Trayee because I’m just today getting over the nasty crud I caught last week. Spent the last few days wallowing around in bed simultaneously throwing a one person pity party and berating myself for being a wimpy mess. Fun times!

First perfume wearing in a few days so I really wanted something light. Wanting to go with my Egyptian Goddess Perfume Oil but couldn’t find it after re-organinzing my collection a while back. 🙄

As far as letting go and the CP, the only thing I’m letting go is the pathogens that have dared to invade my body. Every exhalation, I’m chanting “Out damn pathogen, out I say!!” I think it might be working! 🙃

Wishing all wellness and happiness! For those caught in the rip tide of grief and pain, go with the flow, don’t swim against the current, let it take you out into the endless blue sea, eventually you will be gently deposited on sunny, calm shores. 🏝️

    Strawberries and yogurt smoothie

We’re having good weather 25C and breezy so I chose a summery scent I Profumi Di Firenze Agrumi Di Sicilia, debating if I like it better than Mediterraneo, maybe. Tonight it’s Berdoues Vanira Moorea, a citrussy vanilla I got because Dulcis in Fundo was too expensive. I find VM a very good summer vanilla.

I’m in a few spritzes of MFK Aqua Media Cologne Forte, the new one. I applied this morning, and it’s nearly gone. Rather green, with a little fennel and citrusy tea. I like it a lot, but the price and longevity has me “letting go” of the idea of a full bottle purchase. 😉

Robin, the bottle is indeed plastic. Hopefully this isn’t a harbinger of things to come.

As Calypso posted yesterday, we went on a super sniffa yesterday! I was surprised to see SMN at Saks! I tried a few on paper, but none of them made it onto skin. They are carrying By Kilian, and had a Dark Lord tester out. I mooned over it and it got skin time. I begged a sample cuz I’m shameless. 😆
Delina La Rosee was gorgeous – it’s Delina for sure, but with a more citrusy note in it. Valaya, also Parfums de Marly, was nice at the start, but went a little sweet into the wear. I think this was a hit for Calypso, though.
Tried Amouage Opus XII Rose Incense, but accidentally sprayed it over something else, so I’ll have to try it again. The paper tester smells divine, though.
We both tried Nishane B-612 and liked it, but The only real estate I had left was the palm of my right hand. Did I mention it was a super-sniffa?!? 🤣 I’ll have to try this one again too, since what I was smelling was quite different than the notes listed on fragrantica.
Lastly, I tried Liquides Imaginaires Dom Rosa Millisime, a grapefruity fresh rose. This one made Calypso recoil, but she was nice enough to sniff it twice. I can still pick up a whiff of it on my arm. I begged a sample of this one too, so I’ll see what it’s like when I’m not wearing 3,597 other smellies.
Sad news: I tried Neroli Outrenoir on skin, and it’s definitely been reformulated, and not very well. The SA actually volunteered this information when he sprayed it on me. I was very surprised he was so candid about it! As always, YMMV.
Calypso shared some lovely samples with me, and I can’t wait to try them, especially Harvest Mouse, which many are smitten with. Fun times! 🤩

Good report! It was indeed fun. Sorry for my reaction to the Dom Rosa, but grapefruit in scents nearly always smells like cat pee to me! I know that’s not true for everyone. (Just as, for some people like you, sandalwood can smell like pickles.)
I’m pouting because the sample of the new MFK the kind saleslady made for me simply will not spray at all!
However I’m comforting myself with the luscious sample of Shalimar Tonka that you brought me yesterday. 🙂

I bought some Profumum Roma samples earlier in spring, I guess in hopes of finding something beachy and summery, but I’ve been quite remiss in my sampling and can’t remember which ones are which and if I liked them or wanted to try again or if I’ve even tested them all. This is not because I’m overrun with samples so much as that the names don’t really stick in my head with any kind of association so I forget what I’ve put on almost immediately., much less remembering it later.

I thought Acqua Viva might be a fun one for the first day of summer but it wasn’t doing it for me. I feel like I should like it more than I do – a (lemon) citrus that really lasts – but it’s a bit austere. A couple of hours in I topped it with Dulcis in Fundo, which really is fun and yum! It reminds me of another lemon meringue/candy floss confection that one of you gals supplied me with many years ago but I can’t remember what it was called or who I got it from (sorry!)

On another note, my soybeans have been soaking and today was to be my inaugural tofu-making day but I took a muscle relaxant in the middle of the night when I couldn’t get back to sleep due to back pain and am too groggy to do anything challenging. Am instead watching tofu-making videos in preparation.

After I started making bread, something I always thought I’d have to buy from a store or bakery, it started to dawn on me that there are lots of things one can make oneself. It led to making ricotta and cream cheese, and I figured tofu is probably similar. And freshly made tofu sounds too delicious not to try.

Thanks! I bought a soymilk maker as that part didn’t look too fun, but the coagulation of the milk is hopefully not too challenging. Do you make silken or firmer tofu? I was hardcore lemming cold silken tofu salads (hiyayakko) for the summer when the project got rolling, but I think my first foray will be into the firm territory as I’ve got a craving for sheet pan tofu + veggies & noodles.

It’s a beautiful sunny breezy day, had a nice shopping jaunt with a friend this morning, but soon will have to deal with the intense unpleasantness of taking the dog for a nail trim. I have to pin her under my arm in a vise grip while the tech does the dirty deed because she screams and thrashes (and that’s *with* a heavy tranquilizer, which the vet requested). She is definitely the worst dog I’ve ever had for nail trims.

Oh, no, poor doggie. I am well aware that this procedure is regarded as a hideous violation by almost all cats and you risk your life if you try it at home. I have to do stealth trimming, one nail at a time, when a kitty is sleeping in my lap. After that one snip the cat is instantly out of my lap!

Good luck with the nail trimming. One of my dogs is the same, so stressed and yelping. By chance I found that if I put a soft muzzle ( made of nylon, and for a bigger dog) on her, but upside down so the longer section actually covers her eyes ( so she can’t see) she is much calmer.

Interesting! I tried putting a muzzle on her once (one her size, in the correct way) because she is constantly trying to eat stuff off the ground, and complete revolt ensued. She is opinionated and hates being restrained.

I sympathize. My cat has gotten more resistant to claw clipping over time…the last time nearly breaking the skin with her bites, and being VERY deliberate about telegraphing that to me, that she knew she could break the skin but had held back. She is very much her own cat…well, she’s a cat.

Going for CP points with Alien Goddess edp. I have a sample from Mugler, and a kind NST’er send me a sample, too. I think I can let this one go emotionally, and maybe too one of the samples by the end of the day. I know M. Mugler has passed on, so his vision or at least his waiver will never again be on a Mugler fragrance. Alien Goddess is nice, and I won’t waste time fussing about the fact that it is not a bit like Alien. I will enjoy its polite floral profile and be glad when all is spritzed away.

SotM was vintage Empreient, which I received from a perfumista friend, and with which I immediately fell in love. It’s truly a “comfortable” scent for me, and I feel right at home in it. I bought a BuB when it was still cheap. Unfortunately, the small decant I have with me has gone off. I’ll have to check the big bottles. Fingers crossed that they are still ok!
Now it’s L’Artisan Fleur d’Oranger. Although it didn’t exist yet, this always reminds me of my wedding, which was a very low-key (and therefore happy) event! We got married in the Bay Area, and I hadn’t lived there for long. I’ll never forget the gorgeousness of the orange blossoms blooming in the garden where we were. They were heavenly, and definitely a new experience.

Day 3 of Paintapaloooza. The painters are now working on the master bedroom and bath. They told me earlier they won’t be finished today, so I am not sleeping in my own bed tonight. Ugh. But I knew this was going to happen sometime during the project. Fortunately I won’t be sleeping on the floor; there are better options available.

With the CP today! I used the Korres Guava shower gel this morning. It’s low enough that I have to turn it upside down to get what is left out, but not in thunking territory yet.

    SOTD = Korres Guava lotion.

Teflon kitty has been extremely freaked out, and spending most of the time under our bed while the painters are here. But that is not an option for tonight.

Spooky has been better behaved than usual. Much less pooping outside of the litterbox. But she still spent a hair amount of time under the bed as well.
