Thursday scent of the day 5/18

Posted by Robin on 18 May 2023 115 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy International Museum Day! (And don’t forget: the splitmeet and the Haiku challenge are both coming up on Saturday.) Birthdays: Gertrude Käsebier, Frank Capra, Big Joe Turner, W. G. Sebald. What fragrance are you wearing?

Continuing with my theme of “wear what you never got around to putting away since last time you wore it”, I’m in i Profumi di Firenze Spezie dè Medici.

Reminder: on 5/19, we're doing Dealer's Choice, edition 7. Propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m continuing with my copycat theme and I’m in Shalimar MVP because yesterday She-ra wore Philtre, but mentioned MVP.
The sun was very red here this morning with a hazy sky due to the Canadian wildfires. The light coming into my bedroom and onto my hardwood floors also looked red. Kind of unsettling.

Today IS my Friday, and I’m taking a half day which is even better. Plans for a pedi this afternoon and then my girls and I have tickets to the 🦁 King tonight, can’t wait!

Last night Mr. Ockeghem was saying that our hazy skies are due to the fires up north, but we’re the opposite direction of you. We’re nothing like Calgary right now, but we’ll probably have the red post-apocalyptic skies later this summer when the Interior lights on fire. Sigh.

I had hazy skies earlier in the week due to those wildfires. It looked like a really bad case of air pollution. Couldn’t smell anything, though.

Robin, you smell great today! Spezie de’ Medici might be my favourite of the entire line (of the dozen or so I’ve smelled, anyway): spicy and earthy and a little primitive.

For me it’s Adjectives, day four, and I’m in SL Fourreau Noir, which, and I don’t care if it’s not listed in the notes, smells exactly like those black-licorice pipes and cigars. And a lot of other things, too, but that dark licorice scent is undeniable, and gorgeous.

Oh, I like it a lot! Naturally, because it is either discontinued or hard to find. I love green and herbal fragrances, and this works well. It is herbal without being sharp or bitter. I get the basil, but I also get the vetiver. Just lovely. Also, although the sillage is minimal, I can still smell it more than four hours after putting it on, which is not always the case with Diptyque.

I’m wearing YSL Nu, Just Because. A better theme would be Why Don’t I Wear This More Often? except that there’s no answer to that, really. Nu smells cool and peppery, I love it. It’s the hockey puck bottle that’s out of my line of vision in the perfume cabinet.

Fourth day of German week for me. Today I’m going to do the classic 4711 (the echt Kölnisch Wasser), since it’s supposed to warm up a bit.

Looking forward to a long weekend…just have to get there. The head of my group was kind enough to send an email giving us tomorrow afternoon off going into the weekend…then he scheduled me for a 7:30 a.m. meeting, and I already had meetings in the afternoon. Oh well.

Continuing my Aldehydes theme with Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere. It’s so good! The lemony-jasmine-vanilla makes me feel like an elegant lemon meringue pie.

I also wore Amouage Gold last night for extra CP points. Gold could have been a Chanel perfume with the aldehydic opening and rich floral heart.

Lilacs are starting to bloom so my theme is perfumes with a lilac note so I’m in Alchimie today. I’d like to go to the botanic gardens after class today and smell them but it’ll probably be pouring. I planted a lilac bush but it’s currently knee high so it will be a few years before it blooms

I’m in Vol de Nuit EDT (vintage-ish) for my ongoing Whatever Will Feel Dry theme. The a/c saga continues — yesterday the technician came back out, asked if our guest room was ready for him 😆, and went out to do some more diagnostic work. Current theory is that the condenser isn’t working properly and is causing the coil to freeze. Yada yada yada, upshot is that we can run the a/c until the coil freezes, wait for the warm weather to unfreeze it, and run it some more. Supposedly won’t hurt it. Replacement condenser to follow at some point. I figure that, by the time we’ve repaired everything that can be repaired, we will have spent almost as much 💰 as a new heat pump so why not just bite that bullet … but Mr. G is thriftier than I am and he’s running this show. I’m just glad we have some coolth back!

I’m sorry you are having that problem. I’ve been through it before too with the coil freezing. Fortunately my a/c problem was simpler yesterday and was fixed for just $85, a really cheap price for an HVAC repair visit, in my experience. A drain was clogged.

Well, I may have set myself up for failure (not the first time😅) with this single poet/perfume exercise. I should have been a bit more broad as far as poets are concerned. Or, I wish I still my CSP Coco Figue because she seems to reference figs a lot. And persimmons. Are there any persimmon perfumes out there?

Anyway, today I’m wearing Cuir de Lancôme to go with:

Each Moment a White Bull Steps Shining into the World
    by Jane Hirshfield

“If the gods bring to you
    a strange and frightening creature,
    accept the gift
as if it were one you had chosen.

    Say the accustomed prayers,
    oil the hooves well,
caress the small ears with praise.

Have the new halter of woven silver
    embedded with jewels.
Spare no expense, pay what is asked,
when a gift arrives from the sea.

    Treat it as you yourself
    would be treated,
    brought speechless and naked
into the court of a king.

And when the request finally comes,
do not hesitate even an instant—

    Stroke the white throat,
    the heavy, trembling dewlaps
you’ve come to believe were yours,
    and plunge in the knife.

    Not once
    did you enter the pasture
    without pause,
    without yourself trembling.
That you came to love it, that was the gift.

Let the envious gods take back what they can.”

Pairing Sebald’s melancholy writing with Gris Clair on this cold and dismal morning, waiting for sunrise. The neighbours cut down their huge ( dangerous) silver birch trees yesterday and now the sawn trunks are lying like wooden vertebra up the length of their lawn, and the sparrows are trying to make sense of the loss and trying to find a new tree to roost in. Our house has never had more light but so sad to have no golden leaves outside.

I’m always saddened when I hear of trees being taken down. Were they damaged or otherwise at the end of their life cycles? I know that birches here in the PNW don’t live forever — we had 3 when we moved in and only 1 is left now.

I’m in bottega venetta from two different bottles today. I ordered a BUB from Mercari last week so I’m testing it against my current bottle to confirm that it is legit. So far as I can tell, the juice looks the same and my wrists smell the same, so yay for an honest seller.

Drinking F&M Countess Grey tea. That tea, combined with the BV, and the fact that I put on lipstick and hard pants today has me feeling like a proper, presentable person instead of my usual soft pants sloth self.

Gucci Guilty Pour Femme EdT from the rollerball that I tap against my skin to avoid those gross skin floaties. It is working so far.

Does anyone prefer rollerballs to sprays? I could see how they are helpful for applying scent discreetly in public. But too many drawbacks for me.

I am also being perverse because I like the weight and heft of the bottles too much to decant into a spray. Which I totally could do no problem. I just like opening the little fancy box and having the nice bottle.

So in the end I get to have my cake and complain about it too!

Hello hello! I have been released from the clutches of Covid!

I started feeling much better a few days ago. Importantly, I’m now able to smell and taste much more. But it’s definitely been weird, I seem anosmic to certain “parts” of a fragrance and unable to smell the full spectrum. I feel like I’m smelling the ghosts of perfumes. It’s a bit sad and distressing but I’m focusing on the positive, there was about 3 days over the weekend when I could not smell anything at all!!

CP for me this week is wearing scents I know well and seeing how much of it I can still pick up. So far I’ve worn Shalimar Philtre and Copal Azur.

      Glad you are feeling better!

I also lost my sense of smell; it was quite alarming to me as well. I used my essential oils to “force” my sniffer to work. It took me a few days, maybe a week but eventually it came back fully. Each day I could smell a bit more. The first day I couldn’t even smell tea tree or rosemary.

Great to hear you’re feeling better. I had several days last year with Covid when I could barely smell anything. The smell was there but very, very faint. It came right in a few more days, but was alarming.

It has been quite chilly here the last couple,of days, so I am using the opportunity to wear FK Oud Silk Mood EdP, which I received as an extra in a swap. Wish I could remember from whom. 😳 I couldn’t wear this often, but today it’s just the ticket!

Ugh. I try to console myself with the thought that another day of cold weather will preclude another 100-degree day in July. I can’t stand the heat. 🫤

    Robin, you smell delicious.

It was Jean-Louis Scherrer for a finally warm afternoon, spring is lovely here but it has been on the fresh side. Tonight it’s Franck Boclet Vanille, very satisfying to the nose, a favorite vanilla for sure.

Thank you! And same here, spring is not as warm this year as usual. They’re saying it will be a bad summer so I am trying to enjoy spring while I can.

I’m wearing Le Sillage Blanc from Dusita today. It’s described as a chypre, but it’s more green and leathery to my nose.

It does not seem to take much to call a fragrance a chypre these days, right?

Wearing My Insolence today, courtesy of a lovely NST’er! Layered it over Crabtree & Evelyn Sweet Almond lotion to help it linger all day.

Last night I ended up wearing some vintage Shalimar edc as a bedtime scent in my quest to make some bigger dents in my bottles.

You are trying to make dents in vintage too? I think I am usually trying to save them, but I guess it makes more sense to use them up.

I’m trying to work on some neglected bottles and also, too much perfume! But I’m sure it won’t stop me from adding more bottles down the road.

The temperature was in the 30’s this morning and my heat came on. I haven’t officially turned it off yet for spring.
I started out the day wearing Organza. This afternoon I wandered through Macy’s and sprayed PR Fame. The silver robot bottle. I don’t hate it. I mostly smell coconut. I also noticed that No. 5 Eau Premier was not in the case or with the other tester bottles. I thought about asking the SA about it but I didn’t really feel like talking.

Chilly morning here for me. The heat never came on since I have the thermostat set low overnight at 65. The indoor temp has slowly been rising during the day and is now at 71. But the cats have been sitting on their kitty cat hot pad for most of the day.

SOTD = commando still. And my back is sore, so perfume wasn’t terribly interesting to begin with.

I’m in JM’s Orange Blossom from a travel spray that is bottomless. I believe I inherited it, not full, in a swap. I have since made several decants from it for others, and on occasion I spray it in the air for the hell of it. Today I am actually wearing the juice. Like Mary Poppins’ carpet bag, it contains an endless supply of stuff.
