Wednesday scent of the day 5/17

Posted by Robin on 17 May 2023 126 Comments

It's Hump Day. Also World Baking Day and the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. Happy 81st birthday to Claire Fredericks Jr. aka Taj Mahal (On his 80th, he got warm wishes from the Rolling Stones and Ry Cooder). What fragrance are you wearing?

My theme this week seems to be "wear what you never got around to putting away since last time you wore it". I'm in Le Labo Bergamote 22.

Reminder: on 5/19, we're doing Dealer's Choice, edition 7. Propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I wore that Monday Robin, you smell great!
Three days in and I’ve finally decided on a theme: copycat. Wear a perfume that another nster wore the day before. I’m sure we’ve done a cp somehow along this theme?
Anyway I’m in Tam Dao because SheriG wore it yesterday. I’ll be watching and looking for ideas for tomorrow!
Today is my last full day of work this week because I’m taking a half day tomorrow and Friday is my day off.😎

Use It Up: PG cuir d’iris

I actually bought this bottle almost empty just to sample, and of course I love it
and want a FB. When I tip the bottle, there’s a few mls left in the corner.

cute theme!! did you ever figure out if you prefer the Tam Dao EDP or EDT by the way? I think I might be partial to the EDP after all.

Well, after several hours and a lot of repair work, we thought we had the a/c problem fixed … in fact, it ran nicely until bedtime and then threw up a “system malfunction” message and died again. Looks like we’re gonna have to replace the unit. Booooo! I’m commando so far — Le Dix and Mediterraneo are both calling to me, but I’m having trouble deciding.

Adjective, day three: Guerlain Habit Rouge, aka Shalimar Pour Homme. I don’t *love* it — it’s a bit much, even for me — but I like it well enough to own it.

I’m wearing Apres L’ondee – only about 2 degrees here, and raining, so cold wet and miserable. But we need the rain and the south shore has forest fires-this weather could help put them out 🙂

So if the theme were “using up the last of a sample” I’d be right on target. I finished Cologne Cedrat by Nicolai

Day two of Poem and Perfume!

    Poem With Two Endings
    By Jane Hirshfield

“Say ‘death’ and the whole room freezes –
    even the couches stop moving,
    even the lamps.
Like a squirrel suddenly aware it is being looked at.

    Say the word continuously,
and things begin to go forward.
    Your life takes on
the jerky texture of an old film strip.

    Continue saying it,
hold it moment after moment inside the mouth,
    it becomes another syllable.
A shopping mall swirls around the corpse of a beetle.

Death is voracious, it swallows all the living.
Life is voracious, it swallows all the dead.
Neither is ever satisfied, neither is ever filled,
each swallows and swallows the world.

The grip of life is as strong as the grip of death.

(but the vanished, the vanished beloved, o where?)”

    ————————————————————

I paired this with En Voyage’s Zelda today. The opening is all waxy, tropical fecundity and the base is very dark, brooding and resinous, reminding me of a freshly dug grave in a dark forest. It doesn’t smell of the earth, but of the enveloping darkness. This duality really complements the the juxtaposition and intrinsically linked nature of life and death explored in the poem.

    Happy Humpday, NSTers!

      You smell amazing!

No4 was my signature scent for a while back in the 90s. I dont have it anymore though and havent tried recently.
But I remember the plum and tuberose combo was glorious, and somehow more easy to wear than THE OTHER plum and tuberose (Poison)

I dont know how current formula compares to the one I had back then, anyone knows?

It was my signature scent in the ’90s, too! AND I owned a bottle of Poison about the same time…they were my “grown up” perfumes when I was in university in Germany. Jil Sander is a lot easier to wear than Poison for me, even today, though when I look at the notes it’s a real kitchen sink of a perfume!

The sample I have is vintage, so I’m not sure how new bottles would smell now, but I was tempted just to buy one anyway the last time I was in Germany, since it’s not crazy expensive.

I hope you dont mind me asking, but the name Ockeghem, did you pick that name because you think Ockeghem is an awesome composer (because he is…. eh was), or is it not related to him at all? 😊

Whatever Gets You Going In The Morning–today I went with a coffee fragrance, Mousse au Cafe. I smell like an Americano. Yesterday I moved dirt from the old raised bed to the new one and my back is letting me know about it. All that work for one tomato plant, because I can’t eat more than the yield from one and all my neighbors grow them so I can’t give extras away. I might plant a cucumber, too, since I have to water the tomato.

I think I would like to smell like an Americano.

I would like ideally to have one tomato plant and one cherry tomato plant, and 3-4 basil. But I am going to plant nothing.

I’m in Violette Volynka. I blind bought it and though I liked it at first, it’s really growing on me. The sillage is just lovely.

    Continuing narcissus week
    Monday: Au delà Narcisse
    Tuesday: Dryad
    Wednesday: Romanza, by Masque Milano

Just reading some comments on fragrantica about Romanza, often people mention its too animalic or ‘pissy’. I dont get any of those vibes but just to make sure Ill never wear this to the office haha
I was working from home today. Loads of video calls. Its crazy busy, but we finally get a lot of sun here: a much needed energy boost (even though its still a bit chilly…)

Half of my working hours I need to speak English. Half of the time its Dutch (‘my native language)

But sometimes I cant remember the proper dutch word. And when I am tired even the most simple english words I suddenly forget. 😅

After work I sometimes do a few duolingo excercises French and / or Spanish. I sometimes mix those up as well. I keep insisting a fridge is El frigo in french 🤣

When I got home from university in Germany, I had a really hard time writing my senior thesis in English. All my research was in medieval German and Latin, and some French, so I spent all day thinking in other languages and then couldn’t find the words in English. Still happens if I’m in a German environment for a month or so and then come home…fortunately my spouse is fluent in German so I just use whatever word comes to mind and he gets it. 😀

    SOTD = Parfum Satori Satori

Gorgeous, understated, just right for the train (surprisingly crowded). I’m already on the Acela, winging my way (tracking my way?) to Boston. I haven’t planned what I’m doing yet so it’s a dealer’s choice kind of pre-cruise vacation. Laissez-faire vacation – the best kind!

Perfumes – I brought 3: Chanel No.19 EDP, Chanel No.5 EDT and Jo Malone Salty Amber

Jewelry – whatever I am wearing right now: a pair of clear diamond huggies and an Hermes enamel black & white with horse hinged bracelet — aka whatever I wear into the office.

Clothes – maybe I overpacked but we’ll see. Nothing fancy for the items I will send to laundry. They all come out kind of grayish until I wash them myself at home and sometimes the gray stays.

Back with my “Aldehydes with a big A” for the week. Today’s perfume is Frederic Malle Iris Poudre.

In my memory this was quite aldehydic, but it is wearing much less so at the moment. Perhaps it is quite tame compared to the Chanels. The sweeter, creamier notes are coming out today which are lovely.

I held back on # of sprays today since the office is busy. It took a lot of self control to not overspray as usual!

CP: Sweet Dreams …are made of this. Wear your bedtime, sleepy-time, snooze-time, lights-out perfume: the one you spray on your pillow to help you off to the land of nod. Extra points if it also takes your mind off those aching joints, throbbing heads and stomach cramps. Mine is Chypre Mousse ( at least it is sometimes).

Orange and apple and yogurt smoothie

By chance it was a mix of Passage d’Enfer and Yardley Jade today. They played well together. Tonight it’s Angels’ Share.

I tested Lorga Roses D’Ensens from a dabber and liked the opening but it is a bit rich for spring/summer. It is a nice and spicy rose, but I think in fall/winter if I wanted the same vibe I would pull out my bottle of Coco. Passing along this sample to my friend.

Added a bit of Ormonde Jayne Osmanthus from another dabber, which is one I really enjoy. I would love to go to the Ormonde Jayne store in London some day. I think I could do some pocketbook damage there.

I’m continuing my chypre theme with Thierry Mugler’s Chyprissime. When I first tried it, I thought it might be a bit too similar to 31 Rue Cambon, so didn’t buy it. When I got the chance to compare them side-by-side, they weren’t very alike, but I had to wait two years to go overseas again to get it. Worth the wait!

My bundle pack of Jergens arrived!!!!….. Cherry Almond Eau de Parfum, huge body lotion and huge body wash which was already discounted for bundle but then extra 20 percent off for Mother’s Day! Do I need to report to Donatella or can I count it as a Mother’s Day gift? I really bought it for hubby to enjoy on me because he loves this smell as it reminds him of his childhood. So maybe Nostalgia as the CP theme?
But I also oversprayed on Chanel Chance Eau Tendre this morning ( I WONT even tell you how many sprays) because the bottle is leaking at the bottom. So my theme this morning was “USE IT OR LOSE IT”. I will definitely thunk it because half of the juice is already gone.

Running a little late this afternoon. Got caught up in tasks and “To Dos”. I’ve also been sneezing like crazy today, so I suspect that the local pollen count is at “Downright Disrespectful”. 🤧 Probably time to get some Zyrtec…

SOTD = commando, Day 3. At least I remember to put on antiperspirant today! 🤣🤣🤣

My “whatever is laying around” CP continues with the Gucci Guilty EDT sample that knew I had gotten from Sephora but couldn’t find last week when I was doing a Gucci samples week. I found it under the kitchen radiator yesterday with vampire holes in the cardboard. I’m pretty sure one kitty knocked it off the kitchen counter, another bit it, and the third squirreled it away in her hiding spot, so team effort. I really like the EDT version The peach note is just juicy enough without being too sweet/overripe. It is a delicate perfume, and is quite nice. For comparison I’m also wearing Love, Chloe (thanks Jalepeno!!!) They are like cousins, LC has more powder and a heavier dose of lilac.

Tea today is Clipper Ship’s Sunshine, which is like an earl grey if it were made with lemon instead of bergamot.

I had a dentist appointment this morning, where they found yet another cavity. The dentist asked If he should fill it since he was already filling another one. I said no I just want to go home, and scheduled a return appointment. Ugh…
I wore Ilio hair mist and am considering getting the hair mist for Eau Capitol. Tonight for work I chose JhaG Mad Madame because well I am mad. Lol.
Does anyone have any thing to say about JhaG Citizen Queen?

Citizen Queen is good stuff, I think. It’s the only JHAG perfume that made me consider a bottle. I only have a decant and haven’t worn it in a while but it’s pretty perfumey smelling IIRC. I’ll try to find it and wear it soon when the weather cools down, maybe Sunday. Then I can give a better report.

Wearing a few dabs of LPRN edt from a Sephora points freebie from years ago. It was sitting front and center on one of my shelves, noticed it after I was finished doing some cleaning chores. Shamelessly copying someone’s grab-and-go theme today.
