Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Mother’s Day weekend 2023

Posted by Robin on 13 May 2023 200 Comments

Saturday is World Cocktail Day and Sunday is Mother's Day. We're honoring all of it with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your mother's favorite cocktail or mocktail, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Bvlgari Omnia left over from last night. I have to fly under the radar at this facility and Omnia is one of those scents that doesn’t scream “perfume.” It gently whispers, “Ohh, something smells good.” It’s the ultimate Buddhist perfume in that it accepts all and thus is accepted by all. A very inclusive perfume. Does anyone not like it? This is a real question! I’m very curious if it has any critics, and why..?

Thanks to the nice folks who wished all us nurses a Happy International Nurses Day yesterday! Greatly appreciated. I’ve been astounded by what nurses are posting on IG regarding their hospital systems way of recognizing it. Really, some amazing things…😂

Now, time for a confession. All that talk of Bottega Veneta being discontinued had me flip-flopping about getting a bottle. There’s a whole boring story that goes with this perfume which I won’t go into. So, to cut to the chase, I ended up getting a small bottle from Amazon., which is the only place I could find it. And the price was reasonable. I know, I’m a sucker.

Happy weekend! And Happy Mother’s Day a day early to all the Moms out there!

I was thisclose to choosing Omnia this morning! I don’t know if a lot of people actively dislike it, but I do know that a lot of people can’t seem to smell it at all, which amazes me, because on my skin it has a lot of presence — it doesn’t scream, as you say, but it is definitely there.

Really?! Too bad for them if they can’t smell it because they’re missing out. It definitely has presence on me, too, and good lasting power. Plus, it puts out these positive, calming vibes. It’s like a beautiful silk bra- soft and silky, but still supportive! 🤣

Every day should be International Nurses Day. From what I see and hear, nurses dont get enough pay and unfortunately not always enough respect for the extremely important and hard work.

I never tried Bvlgaria Omnia and I dont know anyone who has it, so I cant help you there, but I looked up the notes and I can not imagine anyone not liking it 😊

And I have yet to try Omnia but it sounds wonderful
My daughter’s hospital had a wonderful fancy dinner at a local golf course and gifted them all caps and stainless steel coffee mugs for Nurses Day. So yes, there is some appreciation out there.

      Happy belated Nurse’s Day Deva!
I had very sweet Nurse’s 23 years ago when I lost my baby boy. Unfortunately for them, I was not so sweet. I was a horrible patient. After I regained my mind I went back and apologized. I still feel bad for them though.

Lillyjo, I’m so sorry. I can’t even imagine. There are times when people justifiably and understandably lose their mind, and not one single nurse is judging them. Most of the time we’re in the med room or stock room crying for you when no one is looking. It’s heart breaking to see people go through such tragic times. I’m so sorry about your lovely boy. 💔

Today I’m in Vanille Sauvage de Madagascar by La Maison de la Vanille, my favourite of their entire line (all the ones I’ve tried, anyway). Vanilla but with an edge, nothing plain about it (although there’s a place for that, too — just not today).

First of all, thank you ALL for the birthday wishes yesterday! I did not have time to reply, but it warms my heart, You are the best! 😊😍☀️

I am wearing Brin de Reglisse right now. I am not a big lavender fan but somehow this works for me. Must be the combo with the other notes. Though like most other Hermessences it seems gone in 60 seconds (haha just kidding its still there after 2 hours, but very very quietly).

Tomorrow I will be visiting a very good friend. Her partner (also the father of their two children) passed away, not even 2 months ago, very very unexpectedly. Its heartbreaking and unfair, incredibly sad, and it also makes me a bit angry to be honest. And their children are not even 10 y/o….

And while I write this my thoughts of course also go out to you Robin ❤️

As for mothers, my own mother… (remember she was very sick a few years ago?) she is still going strong right now and we will be visiting her next thursday (its Acension Day, a public holiday here)

      Mmmmh
      Language question,
Is there a difference between sick or ill?

I suddenly remember from english lessons long time ago that sick was for feeling unwell, but ill was when it was really serious. Or is that only in UK english?
My mother has a serious illness (Cirrhosis of liver) but not sure if you use sick or ill do describe a situation like that

I do not personally use sick / ill that way, to me they are synonyms. For the kind of serious illness you’re talking about I would say “chronic condition” or “chronic illness” or something like that? Curious to hear what others think.

And another consideration is the slang use of “sick” which means something along the lines of “awesome” or “cool.” Language- such an imperfect art! 🙃

Ah yeah…people use that in the netherlands in that way as well. Sometime they literally translate it and they say “ziek”

And something cool was/is also called “vet” (translates as “fat” in English).
            😎

          • Jalapeno says:
            14 May 2023 at 9:37 pm

Back in the 1990’s here in the US, a lot of people were using “fat” as cool, but it was spelled “phat”.

      • Kanuka says:
        13 May 2023 at 2:35 pm

I think that generally I would think of ‘sick’ as being something short-term ( like flu) and ill as something longer term ( cancer) but having said that, in everyday speech I would just use both (as meaning “unwell”)( like Robin says) if I was just chatting, so swapping them around, using both. If I was writing, however, I would probably use them a bit more consciously…so, someone might die “after a long illness” or was “ill for many months” rather than sick. Though that might not always be the case, as sick feels more homely so the tone is different. The other thing in writing is that you are more likely to use/place “sick” before a noun ( sick dog, rather than ill dog) even though they are both adjectives.

Agree, someone dies after “a long illness”, not after being sick for a long time. So perhaps I don’t entirely use them as synonyms either.

Now you got me thinking about it— I most definitely might say someone was sick for a long time. . . But if the person passed away, I doubt I would write the same, unless I was writing dialogue— or a comment in a blog 💜 But that may be California and our generally more casual way of speaking. I come from a city, after all, where we are hella relaxed 😉

Tossing my my 2 cents about sick vs ill in American English. I usually don’t see ill used by itself much at all, but when it is, it is a synonym for sick. “Illness” is something serious.

But I have had discussions with relatives in the past about someone being “sick with cancer” and not ill. Don’t know if it is regional or generational usage.

I agree with Kris — in North American English sick and ill are used interchangeably. But formally and probably in the dictionary “ill” would be more serious. And I can see where there’s likely more of a distinction in UK English.

All My english teachers were very UK focused though some of them did explain that US english can be a bit different.
I also remember the old guy that taught me about the sick and ill difference (he always seemed like he actually wanted to be a BBC news reader instead of a teacher. 😅.)

And I dont know why I remember that specific detail from (probably) more than 100 (or maybe 200?) english lessons 😅

My mom’s in her 80s and still going strong in body, mind and spirit. She instilled within me the love of fragrance and shared with me all of the classics in the 70s and 80s as well as creating a fragrance wardrobe of my own when I was a child. Now I share my entire collection with her and have passed the torch to my children as well.

Now also a huge relief to have my mother near me after my husband died. Will be a comfort to my son as well, he loves his nana.

I suddenly remember, one of the first perfumes she gifted me when i was young was LouLou by Cacharel,
so 80s right? haha I can not imagine that a scent like that would be a ‘starter’-perfume nowadays for young persons…

World Cocktail Day should be the same as Mother’s Day. 🙂 But maybe it’s appropriate that it’s between International Nurses’ Day and Mother’s Day, so we can toast both?

I’m in Amyris today, from a generous NSTer who sent it with the swapmeet decant, and liking it a lot.

Decided to wear Gucci Guilty EdT again today, which I forgot to post I was wearing on Friday for the CP. I’ve had this desire to sniff it and came close to buying unsniffed. I like it, but I’ve decided I’ve gone a bit anosmic to a lot of scents. I don’t get full appreciation. Which saves me money, I guess, but is certainly a lot less fun.

Have opened our sliding glass doors to our back area…after many months of needing them shut against the cold. So so pleasant. Best part is that today is quite breezy. So we get a lovely sound of the wind through the trees in our woods. It’s one of my favorite sounds in life, so I’m enjoying it greatly.

We are having drizzle but thankfully it is still 72, and birds are chirping outside my window as I type.

I wonder if you’ve become anosmic to one of the big musk or amber aromachemicals?

I’m looking for a scent by Monotheme. It’s not an expensive brand but my BFF loves 2 of them: Amber and Black Oud. I can’t seem to find it anywhere in the US.
Or maybe because I’m still in Italy the internet is playing games with me. I’d like to surprise her with a bottle. Thanks for any help.

A big shout out to all the human “mothers” of pets and animals, gardens and nature, other people’s kids, relatives, colleagues, etc etc. You are much appreciated.
I spotted a half-bottle of Lush The Bug in the op shop yesterday so got it. I saw two bottles of Panache which I left. I had a good chat to an old guy outside one shop who had a bike and trolley with a dog sitting up like an emperor, looking out at the world. The dog was 16 years old ( a Jack Russell mixed breed special) and can no longer keep up with the bike so has no gone full coronation mode. The man was in his 70s, so they were both doing well. Also picked up one of those massive Norton anthologies ….more than a thousand pages on that tissue-thin paper.
Wearing The Bug and waiting in bed for a boiled egg….joking.

I have a huge “collected works” of Shakespeare (the Riverside edition) on that paper, it makes it feel more “special” when I pull it out.

Only Norton Anthology I still have is “of Literature by Women”, which I’m sure I picked up in college in a used bookstore. Which one did you get?

Norton anthology of English Literature Volume 1 which is 2963 pages long. I got my first Norton anthology when I did an American Studies degree and have had a soft spot ever since. That was American Literature volume 1.
Now I also have post-modern American fiction; English lit. Volume D ( Romantic period)and American Literature volume 2. The first one is my favourite though.
I also love buying old phrase books…such a glimpse of how travel has changed. Handy if I need to ask if the mattress is made from horse hair, in German.

I love the Norton Anthologies! —btw my husband (who has a PhD in English) and myself, we have quite a few. I can’t bear to let any of them go even though it’s been decades since I hunkered down with any of them. My favorite is the Women’s Literature. Just checked, my extremely dog-eared copy is from 1985. Those may be languishing, but I do occasionally pull down various “complete works” — Shakespeare, Jane Austen, etc. for a quick roll in the hay. Huge tomes full deliciousness (to thoroughly mix metaphors 🤭)

Today and yesterday were very busy, as I was getting my garden going. I decided to direct sow more seeds this year, but had to balance that with making sure the ground was warm enough. I also had some soil amendments to work in. I have some transplants to do, but I sowed okra, lima beans and green beans. Hopefully the birds were not watching! Post shower, a cup of coffee to power me through grocery shopping and Aura edp – I’m feelin’ green, you know. 🙂

I am commando and have been for the past few days because…… I am down with the crud!! Argh, can’t believe it, after having avoided it for the past few years. The whole family has it, first my son, then me, and my husband’s the last to fall. It all happened in the span of two days, and it didn’t even occur to me to test us until day 2, so there wasn’t any quarantining. It has NOT been fun. Kind of like a typical cold, but amped up. And with lots of aches for me. My son has it the least severe, and we’re all having slightly different symptoms.

I have been missing perfume so much. Fingers crossed I don’t lose my sense of smell entirely! It’s just extremely diminished right now, like with a bad cold.

Wishing all of you a lovely weekend, with some nice activities tomorrow for those celebrating!

In August it will be 2 years since my Mom passed away. It’s gone by faster than I thought it would. I appreciate that some businesses are aware that Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are painful occasions for some people.

My Mom didn’t have a favorite cocktail. I can remember her drinking alcohol only a few times. One of the funniest stories was of a 20-something me being her Designated Driver at her 45th high school reunion. She wanted a glass of white wine on a couple of occasions. So I was her ride after that.

SOTD = back to Patchouli Nobile.

I reset back to Day 1, since I wore something different for the CP yesterday. Before then, I think I had 5 days in a row? 🤔 Maybe I will thunk it soon; not sure. Too warm for sweet perfumes now, so it’s a good choice.

Teflon is still a little itchy. I think those areas on her legs are looking better thanks to the shot the vet gave her. But she refuses to take any more gabapentin in her food. I got the one dose in and that was it.

Spooky’s situation is unchanged. The last blood test did not show any kidney disease, but there is something going on.

I’m back from my daughter’s dance. It was ok. The venue was very small and I think they oversold the tickets. We had a last minute wardrobe malfunction so had to switch up our attire right before we left home. I wore A la Nuit and my daughter wore Bbw frosted coconut. I noticed that I didn’t smell perfume on anyone else at the dance.

It’s wonderful that you both went even though you don’t sound thrilled by the actual dance, like Jalapeno I’ll say glad the malfunction was before you left the house.

    Happy Sunday!
Whirlwind of a week at work.If we were not actively reminded by HR that it was International Nurses’ Day it would have gone by unnoticed.Crazy busy time,I think we are breaking records with amount of surgeries this month so far.At least we got a cupcake and a cool leather keyholder.
My scented week was very Lush, mostly Dirty and Vanillary(trying to thunk these two looks like an impossible task!haha! And they’re in the oldschool little black bottles so nobody knows where the levels are exactly).
Scent of yesterday(Saturday) was the passionfruit flower from Fragonard. So yummy and still smell the remnants this morning.
I just had oatmeal with chocolate chips and coffee for breakfast.I need a shower.
Happy Sunday and Mom’s day!I miss my Mother every.single.day.It’s been almost 7 years…My Mom did not drink at all,but she did enjoy a passionfruit and lemonade,or a good homemade ginger beer.
    XO’s🌹

Hope you have a couple of days off to recover from you whirlwind work week! Yeah, and that lovely gift you got is high class! 😂 I told my agency which of the two gifts they offered that I wanted, but too bad for me because they were already out of it. Really, just keep the gifts, stay out of my hair, and let me do my job because that would be the best nurses week gift ever! 👍🏼

Yes,I’d rather just get on with it myself, and why can’t we get a cupcake every day?Lol.
At least the gift is practical and I needed a new keyholder.🙃

Yikes, I hope your schedule lets up for you. Okay, so you don’t yet have an enabler’s pin for Dirty, but you do have one for chocolate chips in your oatmeal. I’m so doing that tomorrow morning! 🥣

I make my oatmeal interesting with variations of chocolate chips/toasted coconut slivers/dried applerings/honey/peanut butter(this is a clumpy mess mostly, but beyond yummy)

        Thanks,but it’s a busy-busy time and tomorrow(Monday) is another marathon.Lol.We mostly do cataract surgeries,it takes about 7-15 minutes/procedure.Tecnology is fantastic.Eventually we all get cataracts,it’s a normal part of ageing.
        Happy Mom’s Day!

    Happy Mother’s Day!🌹

Wearing Dana Tabu to honor my mother today. This is/was her signature scent her whole life. For us, it is a bittersweet day, knowing this is the last Mother’s day she will be with us. A trio of guitarists is coming this afternoon to play some of her favorite songs. Early dinner at home will follow with my sisters and her families. I hope that despite her weakness she finds some enjoyment today. She always loved red wine and pina coladas. She only had one drink on special ocassions.

Back to read comments tonight. Happy Sunday!

Good hmmm afternoon already, everyone!! Lazy Sunday morning turned into an early afternoon in a blink of an eye… I am currently awaiting my blind buy in the form of Killian’s Princess EdP. I have read so many reviews about it… I already own Bamboo Harmony for the white tea note in it, am madly in love with Imperial Tea that You can no longer find anywhere so I am giving Princess a chance since in my opinion Kilian does tea notes best. Princess has notes of ginger, green tea and marshmallow. Can’t wait for it to arrive!! Next buy will be the white tea cream they offer on their website to compliment my Bamboo Harmony EdP.
The last few months I have been wearing only tea perfumes.
Today after shower will be another one of my favorites: House of Sillage Trend no. 3. Which I had a back up arrive maybe two weeks ago. Happy Sunday and Happy Mother’s Day Everyone!!

Spending Mother’s Day at the airport. Have to be in Cali tomorrow for work for the week, then flying to WV next weekend from Cali for a week with the in-laws. J is meeting me out there. Miss my son today but I’ll get to see him in a few weeks and he sent me the sweetest message this morning.

I only brought 4 decants with me- 10CC, Iris Torrefie, Parfums de Nicolai Fig Tea, and At the Beach. So those will be on rotation the next two weeks. Oh and I think I have a No. 5 sample in my purse so that as well.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you mamas out there and those who may have a hard day today.

In two frags, Lilac and Almond from Caswell & Massy—travel sprays that were Mother’s Day gifts from my spouse (he was prompted 😂) Yesterday I wore Amalia by Fueguia 1833 for a crazy-long clothes shopping day with my husband. The upcoming celebrations for my son who is graduating from college have me stressed out. Several badly behaving relatives all in one place, who all feel competitive and are ripe to feel offended that they are not getting enough attention . . . But now at least I will look amazing while juggling egos and chauffeuring folks to events. Right now we have fourteen for the graduation dinner—long story. But darn it, I’m going to be dressed for success! My son? Who? This is supposed to be about him? Whah?

We agreed the graduation might not be the best opportunity for quality time together 🤭

This morning I took my daughter to the local Zoo. We went super early because I hate traffic. I am now doing much needed house cleaning. Who has a good shower door cleaning tip?
Later when I pick my son up from work, I will stop at the cemetery. My sotd is Coco edp which my Mom would hate because she hated all perfume.

I use something called “Barkeeper’s Friend” on my glass shower doors. Works great. Just spray it on and let it sit for a couple of minutes. You should probably wear gloves when you use it though. It’s available at Home Depot and Lowes.

    sotd = Bogue Mem

because I adore it, lavender is comforting to me.

And because my son’s playful name for me was “Mem.”

“Mem, look at this!” (shows me something funny on YouTube).

    “Mem, I need cookies ”

“Mem, I can’t find my shoe.”

“Mem, what time will you be home?”

I’m missing the little boy memories of him today, it’s different when kids are all grown up.

Wishing all the carers and nurturers and helpers a wonderful day. 🤗
