Thursday scent of the day 5/11

Posted by Robin on 11 May 2023 191 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also Salvador Dali’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m wearing a dab of Marni Rose.

Reminder: 5/12 will be Italian Designer Friday...wear a fragrance by one of the mainstream Italian fashion brands we have not covered so far...maybe Versace, Dolce & Gabbana or Armani? Zegna, Ferragamo, Fendi? (Adding later: Roberto Cavalli or Valentino or Gianfranco Ferré?) (We've already done Italian Niche, and we've done Prada and Gucci).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Zegna Spring 2023 campaign.

    Good morning!

This is the first day we can actually smell some sharp greenness in the air-leaves bursting into bloom and grass-so nice 🙂

Getting ready for tomorrow’s CP wearing Dolce and Gabanna’s scent-the first one, I think, with the red top. It’s so stuffed full of good things. I love the smell of basil, aldehydes, and marigolds. It’s really pretty and has a decided presence.

Hope the entire NST community has one good thing happen today, even if it’s happening around you and you don’t quite notice it but it somehow affects you nicely.

    Carole

    Sotd is Tabac Tabou
    I love it!

Yesterday I mentioned the discontinuation of Bottega Veneta edp. 😔
Here is my source/how I found out
So I noticed the brand disappearing from our local mainstreet beauty retailers. I started googling (thats typically me, ask google instead of asking the sales assistant hahah)
and then I read this thread it on Basenotes, so its not like I saw an official press release from Bottega Veneta about it….

Also always possible their license ran out and they’re switching companies and they’ll come back eventually…but not worth banking on that, obviously.

Yeah I was considering that scenario as well.
Especially because the brand seems more popular than ever.
So not offering any fragrances anymore is a bit weird. Especially when your perfumes have a pretty decent reputation

Wearing my dwindling purse spray of Angel’s Share today. Is it still available in full size? Not that I’m planning on buying it. Just curious…😉

Spent all yesterday evening planning my fall/winter trip. New Mexico has a great state park system that’s super cheap if you buy the affordable annual pass. I may just spend the whole season in that state! So many different environmental zones to explore. So much history, too. Definitely want to hit Meow Wolf when I’m in/near Santa Fe because it looks so fun! Has anyone ever been? Or, if you have ideas about things not to be missed in NM, I’m all ears.

    Happy almost Friday! ✌🏼

My Dad lived in Arroyo Seco, just outside Taos, for years. I love that area. I can’t think of any particular place you need to go that you wouldn’t find on your own, but a season in New Mexico sounds like heaven.

That is a gorgeous area! I was in NM for a short period of time but it was all related to the American West in films, which was a college/travel course I took way back in 2009. I loved both Taos and Santa Fe!

Perseverance pays off with their fragrance selection. It is small (well-edited, really) and things that disappear often pop back up again. The MFK A La Rose has disappeared and reappeared multiple times, taunting me.

I’m sampling I Profumi di Firenze Incanto this morning. Somehow I ended up with some oversized dabbers of various things from this house, along with a normal one-ml dabber of Incanto. Most of them skew too sweet for me, but Incanto is very nice on this lovely morning. It’s all flowers all the time, with a few stems peeking through here and there. FB worthy, you ask? Could be!

Meanwhile, my weather app has backed off forecasting 90-degree temperatures, thank goodness, but there’s still an “excessive heat warning” for this area. Funny how 88 degrees here is grounds for a total freak-out, but in Palm Desert it’s considered balmy. Anyway, happy Friday Eve, everyone!

The “buy” list is always growing, isn’t it?

It’s all about the humidity…88 in Palm Desert would not bother me either!

That “buy list” — aarrggghhh. Sadly, I have fallen hard for Incanto but it is nowhere to be found, even as a decant. However, it was reminding me of something, and I finally figured out that it’s somewhat similar to Mojave Ghost, which I own and adore. So I have resolved once again to be happy with what’s already on my perfume shelf … and maybe try Byredo’s tulip fragrance (if I can find it anywhere). 🌷

I was going to revisit Ferre today, but then I remembered Fendi L’Acquarossa and L’Acquarossa Elixir. I chose Elixir because I was in a cherry mood. It’s a very dense perfume with lots of floral notes. I like it but it is not as beautiful as its bottle, which I love. My tester bottle reads: “a gourmand oriental floral fragrance, bigarreau cherry accord, lantana flower, vanilla absolute from Madagascar.” Does anyone else share my fondness for tester bottles with the notes on them? I have a couple Guerlain bottles like that, and I think it’s interesting to compare my impressions with the “official instructions” of what SA were told to s(m)ell. 🙂

And Plus side: you can wear something else after a few hours.

So. As I have whined before, I am slogging through a dreadfully poorly written (like anyone who writes “dreadfully poorly” should have any say in the matter!) book on scent. But, I am continuing to read it because I am learning things I didn’t know.

Stick with me, this does get to my SOTD!

So, a few nights ago I was reading about how mitti attar is made, which I didn’t know was even a thing. I have heard of the scent petrichor, and have several versions of it in my own scent memory, and note that a bunch of groovy new agey companies create perfumes with “rain” among the notes etc. but I had never heard of mitti attar. So because I can barely understand anything in the damn book, I always read it with my iPad nearby to look up the actual information. So there I was looking up mitti attar, when some business called Tarife Attar popped up on my screen. Sure enough, there is a purveyor of attars near-ish to where I live. Who knew? So of course I had to order some. (Unfortunately, no mitti attar was in the offing.) Anyway, that is how I find myself well anointed in Honey Oudh this morning!

This particular attar is not terribly strong, and I am not really detecting oud–but I am wondering if that is because most oud I smell is synthetic, and real oud attar is a different thing altogether? No idea. But, I am inspired to keep trying attars, and to definitely get my hands on mitti attar.

If you ever get your hands on some mitti attar, I’d be happy to trade samples for some of my real oud collection! Real oud smells like a whole forest to me, from the green shoots of tropical trees to the damp decay of the forest floor. Sometimes it is camphorous up top, a little bit like tiger balm. A lot of cheap oud is very barnyardy and animalic, but it really doesn’t have to be. My favorite ones are not barnyardy at all and instead very sweet and resinous.

I was able to source Mitti Attar from White Lotus when they were still in business but I see that Mandy Aftel has it and maybe Enfleurage or Eden Botanicals may stock it. It is well worth smelling in its unadulterated form. It is fascinating that clay has memory, but why would it not?

My ISP no longer supports my seven year old modem, so I’m replacing it today. Wish me luck, please–I can fix a lot of mechanical things but I don’t know enough to troubleshoot internet problems. Like SheriG said, it’s supposed to be warm here, so I’m wearing Mediterraneo and enjoying it a lot. It doesn’t last on me but I’ll keep spraying.

Well, partial credit, since am in Gucci.

After basically swearing off most designer perfumes (after enough trial and error, i promise) I tried Gucci Guilty at Macy’s randomly a few weeks ago. And now I am the proud owner of a rollerball of the EdT and a rollerball of the EdP becuase I couldn’t choose between them.

If anyone remembers Love, Chloe, these remind me of the lilac scent but less peppery and powdery. I really liked Love Chloe but it made me sneeze.

Also, as a side note, rollerballs are gross. And for these, you can’t convert them to a spray by removing the ball and using a sprayer, because it is a twist cap with glass threads. So I sort of bounce it on my skin instead of rolling.

If I had a preference for the EdT or the EdP I would have gone with a real bottle. We will see which one I finish first I guess. And if a brand has to do a rollerball, they should always use opaque glass. I don’t want to see my skin flakes floating around, ever.

I hate roller balls too ( I hate that pressure against the skin as you roll back and forward, almost painful) so tend to pop-out the ball and just apply carefully from the bottle. Also a glass bottle with a plastic ball-stopper is a pain when it comes to recycling.

Seriously. I have thought about transferring to a decant, I have some nice ones, but I like the whole experience of the original bottle EXCEPT for the rollerball. So I am grumpily tapping not rolling, lol.

Half points for Ariane Grande Cloud.
It snowed on the hills yesterday ( gone in a flash) and as I wandered through town I spotted a pair of boots, black ankle, laces. Tried them on: perfect. Made by a small company in Australia, vegetable tanned leather, sustainable…tick tick tick. Bought them and came home and started reading the “care” brochure that came with them and discovered they are made of kangaroo. This fact is in very tiny, hidden print. On their website there is no mention of kangaroo just a lot of stuff about sustainability, locally sourced materials etc. So I’m guessing kangaroo is a turn off … and it does make me feel a bit put out that it isn’t mentioned “out front”. I like kangaroos ( but I also like cows). I remember how all koala bears (soft toys) were made from kangaroo when I was a kid.

Will see if I can find a BV sample kicking around…it might be the only designer Italian I have. Maybe I have a Dolce sample somewhere.

Finally just about over my bronchitis. Cough is almost gone, after 2 weeks. And, thankfully, the back muscle that was strained is healing. But, gads, our place is a mess. Not just messy. Needs the full treatment of vacuum, dust, mopping. Doing laundry now. Time to switch out the flannel plaid duvet cover for the cotton floral one.

I thought I’d be going to an in-person meeting tomorrow where I’d need to be unscented so I wore my best CP perfume today. But that meeting is now not happening until a couple weeks from now so lol. I’ll have to figure out something else to wear tomorrow or just go off CP. But today I’m in Armani Prive Ambre Soie. It’s lovely and so, of course, discontinued. It’s a soft amber compared to others with a lovely anise or fennel note. It actually doesn’t feel out of place on a warm day, which can’t be said for most ambers.

Mmmm, I love that one. And what a shame it’s d/c. To my nose, Eau d’Italie Baume du Doge smells a bit similar, though it has more notes in it. And speaking of Salvador Dali’s birthday, I am reminded of how good his first perfume was. The original “Lips” from 1983. A floral chypre.

Ok, I do have a bottle of Baume du Doge, actually it’s my partner’s. I’ll have him wear it soon so I can do a comparison.

And I’ve somehow never smelled any of the Dali perfumes! I just came across a small sample of one of them that was an extra in a swap so I’ll be sure to try it soon. 😊

I hope you find some new faves!
I find Baume du Doge quite unisex, actually.
The difficulty with the Dali frags is there are soo many of them, which I admit I’ve mostly not tried. But the original one, especially if you can find it in vintage, is quite the bomb. Some kind soul send me a partial bottle as an extra in a swap a few years ago and I was very impressed. I am no help however, since I no longer recall how to discern the vintage from more recent ones. Perhaps the lips are frosted? I don’t remember, alas.

In other news, my sister reminded me yesterday that we have a Beverage package as part of our cruise deal. We can get up to 15 drinks per day as long as they are under $11 each. There are many choices and I just have to be careful about the quantity of alcohol I ingest, not that there’s any danger of over-indulging. Lately, the news is that no amount of alcohol in one’s system is good. I’ll believe it when I return 🤣 – heh, just kidding. Maybe I just have to think of a maximum amount per day, perhaps 2 tops per day and not making up for drinks not drank? I know I will fill up with ☕️ for sure!

Posting late today for an unexpectedly busy day. We had a tiling contractor in to look at a potential job in the kitchen. We ended up hiring him, and he will be here next week. Add that to the painters coming at the end of this month, and things are feeling crazy.

Sad kitty update: Spooky is not doing well. I have this feeling that her days are numbered. The vet asked about her quality of life, and it has been deteriorating lately.

I’m doing the CP with Dolce & Gabbana The One edp. It is rich and fruity, with a bit of citrus and lots of sweet stuff too. Too heady for the first few hours but nice after that. My bottle is still almost full, and I remember buying it when I played hooky and went shopping during a conference in Chicago at what I think was still Marshall Field’s downtown. According to Google that makes it before 2006. I fell down the rabbit hole soon after that and stopped wearing my more mainstream perfumes. It smells good still, though it’s really just too potent and sweet to be an everyday scent for me, or even a frequent scent.

Hmm. This scent was launched in 2006. So maybe the Marshall Field’s was already Macy’s by the time I bought it. It was still pretty fancy. Macy’s brought everything downhill I’m afraid. I won’t even go to they Houston stores, they are so poorly maintained.

Totally agree. Depending on when in 2006, it may have still been MF. That’s the year we moved to madison and there was a MF here. By the end of the summer it was a macys and it’s been all downhill. I was just there the other day (it’s walking distance from my house) and half of the second floor is now this macys “backstage” which frankly looks like a bunch of junk. Gone are higher end designers like Eileen Fisher. So sad. Marshall Fields was a very fancy store once upon a time.

Yes, the backstage is a disaster ( still not as bad as my store though lol)

Maybe our Marshall Fields was an anomaly, but I was always exasperated with the store. They just weren’t staffed. At all. I remember looking all over the floor trying to find a manned register, and just walking out after finding no one.

That said, I agree about macys. Less than impressed!

I also bought D&G The One EdP when it came out. Glad it’s only 30mL!

Sampling the Gucci Bloom Ambrosia and Nettare flankers today. These smell more distinct to me than the other Bloom flankers I’ve tried so far. The Ambrosia is creamy, honeyed white flowers, with a teeny tiny almost-isn’t-even-there wisp of vanilla. The Nettare has a fruity note, I’m guessing from the ginger and osmanthus because those seem to be the only notes unique to this flanker. The ginger also gives it a juicy spiciness too. These are, respectively, my favorite and least favorite of the bunch so far.

To today was a strong assam because I had to get up for an early no-fun call with a project team that does not like work-related decisions made 10+ years ago by people far above my pay grade that created obstacles that impact this project team today. There are only so many ways I know how to say “this is not my fault, don’t shoot the messenger” in work-speak, especially on an early-morning call!

Pretty sure that I’ve tried at least one Gucci Bloom flanker. Can’t recall what it was without consulting my sniffing notes, though. I liked whatever it was.

My sotd was 24 Faubourg because it called my name.
It’s been quite a day. Wish me a good night’s sleep because I didn’t get any last night due to bad dreams.

Aw, that’s a shame about the bad dreams. Maybe you need a dreamcatcher over your bed?

      Sleep well tonight.

Hope you get a good sleep tonight! You smell fantastic; I sampled 24 Faubourg at the airport waiting for a return flight home. I oversprayed myself, of course. Loved it!

Thank you to everyone who gave me great suggestions for my birthday 🎂 scent today. Turning 50 today was rough and I wanted a happy scent. J chose the scent that originally sent me down the rabbit 🐇 hole. …
Jo Malone ‘s Nectarine Blossom & Honey. It turned out to be a great day.

Happy Birthday! I’m glad you found a happy scent for the day. I found 50 a bit hard, 60 not so bad, and 70 worse! But I’m still hanging in there and eating good food and sniffing good smells and petting cats!

I was in Hiram Green Dilettante today. It was nice in the far drydown, but BWFs will never be my favorites. It’s always fun to try them periodically, though.

I wore Tom Ford Black Orchid from my samples box since I recently reorganized them and need to USE THEM UP. It was nice, but faded quickly. So tonight I worked on another sample, Penhaligon’s Blenheim Bouquet. It’s okay. I’ll wear Valentino Valentina for the CP tomorrow, since I happen to have that too. I think I’ll aim to thunk a sample a week. Thunk-It Thursdays?
