Wednesday scent of the day 5/10

Posted by Robin on 10 May 2023 167 Comments

It's Hump Day, National Shrimp Day and the International Day of Argania. Birthdays: Tonita Peña, Fred Astaire, David O. Selznick, Maybelle Carter, Arthur Alexander, Donovan, Miuccia Prada, Sid Vicious, Bono. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Savon Stories Ottoman Rose Solid Lotion again, this time with a bit of Tauer Rose Delight body oil.

Reminder: 5/12 will be Italian Designer Friday...wear a fragrance by one of the mainstream Italian fashion brands we have not covered so far...maybe Versace, Dolce & Gabbana or Armani? Zegna, Ferragamo, Fendi? (Adding later: Roberto Cavalli or Valentino or Gianfranco Ferré?) (We've already done Italian Niche, and we've done Prada and Gucci).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Ferragamo Lunar New Year campaign for 2022.

Fred Astaire and David O Selznick plus Miuccia Prada, I’m hitting on all cylinders today lol. Just watched Top Hat (Astaire) and Dinner at 8 (Selznick) and for my Italian week, today I’m wearing Prada Intense. Just a bit left in my decant, this is one I can easily thunk, a very pretty patchouli.
Another gorgeous spring day. I might actually wash a few windows.

Ha! Note the key word, “might” wash some windows. Then again I might just hang out on the porch with Larry the cat 🌞

I’ve never seen Dinner at Eight-must rectify that.

I used Guerlain body wash and my sample of Neroli Outrenoir. I really like this scent but Guerlain lost me at their last price and size increase. It keeps them in line with some other brands but it seems too $$$ for my wallet, and my collection. A 15 ml size would be great.

Gorgeous day triplet! I am noting your movie list – I’ve never seen either of those. We just watched (and you might like) Ziegfeld Girl (1941) which had a great cast, and my favorite Busy Berkelely extravaganzas. My library has quite a few of mid-20th Century song and dance movies.

I have seen and enjoyed Ziegfield Girl. Those Busby Berkeley musicals are the best! My favorite is Gold Diggers of 1933.

Good Morning my scented friends! Boy has it been a long time. My SOTD is BR540.
Tomorrow is my birthday and I will be turning the big 50. I’m totally blessed to be turning this milestone in my life, but at the same time a little sad….
I’m needing suggestions on wearing an upbeat and happy fragrance tomorrow. All suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
Have a beautiful day everyone! 🙂

One of my happy perfumes is AS Saturday — happy and upbeat and maybe a reminder that I’m still young, comparatively.

Happy Pre-Birthday, ockeghem! At almost 62, with the 50s in the rearview mirror by a decade plus, I agree with Oakland Fresca that the 50s bring more body awareness (In my 40s, I didn’t know that I had to take care of my back😬), and also more perspective, clarity and less willingness to take any (fill in noun) from anybody. Very liberating and hopeful overall.

My 50 is in the rearview mirror by, ummm, well, not a decade, but not yesterday either. To be honest, some physical things start to fall apart, but overall the 50s have been a blast. Honestly–it is so much easier to not give a (insert your preferred noun). The world is your oyster. Tell yourself, you are going to enjoy this. You will!

    I’m in Glossier You.
My phone took it upon itself to do an update last night while I slept. I’ve been trying for weeks and it would not cooperate. Anyway, now the internet search bar is at the bottom of the screen instead of the top. Noooo!😩 I hate change when it comes to technology.

I’m not going to let it ruin my good mood though, I will adapt.
I slept sooo good last night. Fell asleep when my head hit the pillow and slept right through til 5 am! That so rarely happens for me and when it does man oh man, it is heaven! Plus it’s 60 and sunny.🌞 Of course I’m in my windowless office today but plan to get out for a lunchtime walk along the lake.

Another Houstonian here. The must-visit place is Kuhl-Linscomb which is in an area called Upper Kirby. It’s on Alabama Street a block east of Kirby and is near a big Whole Foods store. K-L has a lot of niche brands and you can sniff to your heart’s delight, with or without SA help as you desire.

Calypso steered me to Kuhl-Linscomb when I was in Houston last year and I could have spent hours sniffing though it. Lots of brands I rarely see in stores, and lots I had not heard of.

I’m in Prada L’Eau Ambrée this morning, and what a gorgeous sunny morning it is here! I need to drag the garden hose over to our heat pump unit and spray the accumulated dust off (our technician’s recommendation) because the forecast is for temperatures in the 90s this weekend — helloooooo, summer!

90’s in May?!? Ow, that hurts. Forecast here is sunny and low 70’s, and I won’t switch with anyone! 😄 We probably get about four days a year like this.

I’m tired of the Zegna, and I don’t have much else for the CP, so I’m going back to Hermés Violette Volynka. A violet-leather combo made for spring.

Today I think I’m going to just go with the Italian part of the CP, and wear Santa Maria Novella Acqua di Colonia to celebrate the sun and warming weather.

Coincidentally, I was thinking about making shrimp tonight since the NYT had a recipe the other day that would also use up the half head of cabbage I have. Well, I guess I’d better go with the shrimp, since it’s National Shrimp Day! 🙂

I’m like you, doing Italian but not a designer. I’m in Acqua di Parma Bergamotto di Calabria. It’s a realistic juicy citrus with some sort of spice and salty aspects (its ingredients include vetiver and musk). Doing something with shrimp sounds good to me, what will you make? Maybe I’ll do the same!

    Good day fragrant fam,

I am in a oud perfume spray from Hikayat Fragrances on Etsy. It’s a lovely sweet and waxy actual oud. I am realizing many ‘oud’ perfumes don’t actually smell like real oud and are mostly some sort of synthetic accord.

My sinuses have cleared up enough that I can smell the paperwhite narcissus that are now blooming in my neighborhood square. They smell divine in the evening, very similar to lilies. Life is good!

I’m cousins with Pyramus today in CSP Vanille Café. We’ve been out in the woods the past several days and the weather has been absolutely stunning. Sadly, summer arrives with a vengeance by the end of the week with temps in the 90’s. In May. In the PNW. 😭

In other news I’m taking Biggie Smols to Portland tomorrow for some upgrades and very excited about that although my bank account is NOT. 😃

I’m trying to break the flavored creamer habit after reading an article about the addictive properties and vat of chemicals these things are. Hazelnut has been my ride of die for years, so it’s going to be tough. Tried coffee with sweetened condensed milk this morning but not terribly fond of it. Maybe just plain old cream and sugar is the way to go…

Could you get a similar result by getting hazelnut flavoured coffee beans/ grind with plain milk? Good luck with your upgrades!

I usually do buy hazelnut coffee, or some iteration of it. Most coffee aficionados are probably struck dumb (and horrified!!) by the fact I love that creamer so much, but there it is…no shame in my game. 😎

Nothing terribly exciting to anyone but me. I’m getting a heavy duty brush guard in case I hit a deer or an elk. I missed one in Moby by this much👌🏼last summer. Scared the bejesus out of me. I had to pull over and wait till my heart went back into a normal rythym. I’m sure the deer felt the same. I have much more invested in this rig than in Moby and a deer/elk can total even an HD truck, not to mention what would happen to the camper. A pricey expenditure now, but in worst case scenario, will save a ton. Plus, insurance companies love them. Also getting a front hitch installed so I can stop carrying my bike on the dinette seat, put it on the front hitch, and actually USE it this year.

For the CP, Moresque Sandal Granada. A very creamy sandalwood accord; reviewer “HollywoodNovaBaby” on Fragrantica nailed it when she said it smells like Zoologist Bee. I confess I saw a nicely discounted bottle and bought it because of good reviews and the fancy packaging. Robin, I had to google Day of Argania, but I have been using argan oil for several years and think it is a great skin care item.

A cold front came through yesterday evening with thunder and lightning, and at sunset I was driving and noticed the sky was covered with the most amazing mammutus clouds. You hardly ever see them here, much more common in Midwest USA I think? I had to stop the car and watch. They looked like cloud balloons hanging beneath the base of the cloud
    https://www.weatherandradar.com/weather-news/what-are-mammatus-clouds–fad47126-9d76-407d-bbe2-0a11a4ac2463

I’m missing my smoothies, will stock up on fruits tomorrow.

The plumber came to service the magna clean filter on the boiler and he was really helpful and did a great job, it also cost less than I thought it would and my boiler is happy to be clean. I might shop for perfume with that spare money😉.

I decided on wearing A*Men Tonka with its sweet dusty smell, I’m sad Loreal in their wisdom stopped producing the A*Men flankers, I also have Malt and it is just as outstanding but never smelled Coffee and the others.

Tonight it is vintage Habanita, I have the current version as well, I love both, both very potent.

I never gave L’oreal much thought until they purchased Mugler. As far as I am concerned they have ruined the brand. When Clarins was in control they were able to make a designer brand appear exclusive and prestigious. They did true limited editions, and had awesome customer service. L’oreal stinks. Lol sorry for the rant. You smell great!🌞

Lots of sneezing for me today; the pollen count is in the “Extremely High” range. No kidding, Weatherbug? At least it isn’t bothering the cats this year.

Picked up more paint swatches today, plus a few more errands.

I am testing 2 perfumes. On one hand is Phlur Tangerine Boy. I am searching for an eventual replacement for my beloved Orange Sanguine, since it’s no longer available here. TB is very similar but the aroma chemical dry down kills it for me. On my other hand is Versace Crystal Noir. I like it as long as I don’t smell it up close, which of course I can’t stop doing. Lol.

I’m comparing samples of Gucci Bloom and the Bloom Gocce de Fiori flanker. According to the notes list on fragrantica, they are the same except BGdF has an added honeysuckle note. Both smell like white spring floral bouquets but a bit sharp, as opposed to a creamy/full bodied white floral. The honeysuckle in BGdF adds a touch of sweetness compared to the salty-skin saltiness of Bloom. They are both nice but neither wows me.

    Tea today is French Grey.

There is one channel The simple chic life. Her videos are very relaxing but she is constantly buying and then getting rid of her perfume and then sometimes re-buying. It makes me crazy. I can’t recall any other names atm. If you look up perfume de-clutter there’s a ton. Most give the reason of poor longevity ( which imo isn’t a good reason)
Oh.. if you want to hear someone talk nonsense about Chanel perfume look up Soki London. A few weeks ago she did a video on Chanel and really made her distaste for the brand known. ( pleasant girl though)

The rest of the week will be spent adulting. Boo!!

I just realized that my collection is very poorly represented by Italian houses (I have a bottle of Bottega Veneta and a Carthusia decant) and I’m curious why. I’ve tried and liked a lot of Gucci fragrances but never pulled the trigger.

    Amber vanilla anyone? Love it!

Counting down to vacation and my packing is 25% done! Of course now of all things to worry about, do I park my car at the train station or do I Uber it? If I park at the train station, I definitely will not get a spot in the vicinity of where I usually park and if I get Uber, I have to fake out where I need to be picked up.
