Thursday scent of the day 5/4

Posted by Robin on 4 May 2023 172 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday, and May The Fourth Be With You! Birthdays: Jane Jacobs, Audrey Hepburn. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando but in my mind I'm doing rosemary in Guerlain Jicky.

Reminder: on 5/5, we're doing Scarborough Fair Friday. Wear a fragrance with parsley, sage, rosemary or thyme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Thank you AnnieA, that is so kind. I will probably look at it next week and I am sure it will give me comfort then. I hope I do not sound in any way callous or rude, I am still in a very very deep state of shock and just sort of sleepwalking numb through the motions of everyday life, if that makes any sense to you. (It would have only barely made sense to me a couple weeks ago.)

The celebration of life event for my husband is on Sunday and I am sort of hoping I stay in this state through then because it will be easier for me and for my son if I keep it together emotionally until then, but it’s out of my control, it’s just what my brain is doing right now.

My husband and I were lucky in both having supportive families, that has really helped…other people are taking care of absolutely everything, all I have to do every day is get up and shower and water my plants. Maybe that is why my brain knows it is ok to just rest in shock for a bit? My son is having a hard time so it is nice that there are always people, including me, to comfort him without breaking down themselves.

Oh Robin.😢 I believe you and I have sons that are similar in age. (Mine is 26). I am just so very sorry for you both. Family is everything, so glad you both have the support that you need.

He is 24. I think this is one of the times when it might be easier not to be an only child, but it is what it is, right?

          Thank you.

I am an only child and was 37 when my father died at the age of 60. Being an only child can be hard at times like this, but I remember being there for my mom when she needed me. I called her every day for months to make sure she was ok.

I know it is such a difficult time for you and your son, but we are all here for you if you need us. Take care.

I can imagine that state of shock. I still go back to that when I’m in my grandmother’s washroom (which I was 2 weeks ago); one of the few memories I have of the week my mom died is sitting in that room, thinking that it just felt like she had taken a trip.

Thinking of you as you move through this week. I’m glad you have a lot of support and can focus on helping your son.

Your state of mind is so understandable, you are still shell-shocked, I will be hoping that you remain the same until Sunday, the way you want it, there is no rule for grief to be sure.

Robin, I am glad to hear that you are getting such wonderful support from your family and your husband’s family.

I remember that numb shock after my Dad died. It took months for it to wear off. I hope you will keep your composure at the celebration of life event.

I’m in 1991’s Boucheron Pour Homme EDP, a sophisticated, expensive-smelling aromatic chypre. I expect there must be one of the four Scarborough herbs in it, even if they aren’t listed.

Older lyrics of the song also mention rose, and either heather or leather depending on where you read, so between all those things you’re probably covered 🙂

I am in Hermes Iris Ukiyoe layered with Libertine Violeta body oil. I really love this combo, so comforting, stays close to the skin, very very nice.
At home, doing some day to day chores, later i will go visit my mom.
On her, all the perfumes smell amazing, I think it’s her skin or something. Whenever something doesn’t work on me, I give it to her and always surprised that it totally smells different and gorgeous on her. BTW her signature scent is Aromatics Elixir.

Wearing a flannel that smells like Corsica Furiosa from yesterday. Or maybe that day before? Who knows..?! It looks clean and smells good, so that’s all I require. I may add a bit more later in the day.

Rain, thunder and lightening here. Total no go for the baby T who has grown to hate thunder as she’s gotten older. So we are snuggling until it blows over because she’s all a tremble and skeered, poor punkin. .

Tonight is the Flower Moon, no chance I’ll see it with all these clouds, but I hope someone can.🌕

Well, apparently it’s just a regular old full moon, so I don’t hunk folks are missing too much. I did notice last night when I went out on lunch to take doggo out (before the weather rolled in) it was VERY bright. Maybe that’s just subjective because it’s been so long since I’ve actually seen it due to cloud cover. 🌕

Yeah I love that I can have a better work-private life balance (no commute, more time for sports or sleeping in haha).

And for me it does not make sense at all to be in office all the time. The team I work with is in another country (Spain) or in another city, so at least 40 percent of my schedule consists of video calls. And that kind of communication is better to do from a quiet room at home than from a crowded office ‘garden’.

    Hello!

Robin, I remember after my mom died after a long illness, that shock kept me going for a bit. And please be careful-you can get a lot done after shock, but it takes its toll on the body. I’m glad you have support. And I wish I had commented more here-I’ve been reading for more than a decade but rarely commented. I should have spoken up sooner 😉

Scent of the day is Cuir d’Ange. One of those nice big 4 ml sizes Hermes used to send out-maybe they still do. It’s actually a pretty perfect size.

One more day till the weekend 🙂

If I complain I will make things more stressful for myself. What it most affects me is the extreme weather conditions. I usually try to stay calm, since that’s part of my job and there is nothing I can’t do about it.

I do really enjoy it, and I don’t have anything else like it so I may replace it with a 15ml bottle when the current one is done. I’m so glad they offer that smaller size now.

Tomorrow I’ll be commando until the evening because I have to go into the office. But I may dig out my sample of Jo Malone Wild Strawberry and Parsley in the evening.

Oh, forgot to mention yesterday that our coffee maker gave out yesterday morning. It had been on the fritz for a while, so it wasn’t too surprising. Luckily, we had some store bought cold brew in the fridge so that’s what we’re drinking until the new machine arrives. It’s cooler out today though so I may take a break from working in little while and walk to grab a latte.

Today I’m wearing Chantecaille Kalimantan for the CP. Taking double points for rosemary and thyme. 😉 Those notes are very fleeting, though. Mostly I get patchouli, incense, and benzoin. It’s a lovely winter frag, which is ok since it’s a very winterish spring day here. 40’s, breezy, and cloudy. By the weekend it should be in the 70’s. All-righty!

I’m wearing MFK Aqua Universalis Forte today and there’s something about the scent it that reminds me of some smell at my pediatrician’s office when I was a kid. Scent memory is such an interesting thing and that is the last thing I’d ever think a fragrance would remind me of. AUF is a well made and long lasting and strong for a fresh scent, but I just can’t get past the scent me it evokes for me

I’m still feeling a bit under the weather. I’m wondering if my faint Covid positive test was a false positive and I have a cold. The faint positive was Tuesday, I tested negative on Thursday, and my beloved has tested negative twice despite clearly having some respiratory thing.
I’ve got a couple of urgent things that I really need to do for work today, other people are away sick with other ailments, so I am the last one standing. I will fortify myself with one of my new purchases, Sillage Royal from Manos Gerakinis, which is a nice rose oud. It’s a combination that I’ve smelled frequently, but didn’t have much of.

SOTD is Carthusia 1681, which has both thyme and rosemary, and some black pepper to boot, so I’m on point for the CP for sure! Got lots done this morning — re-registered the car, applied for the TSA pre-check thing, went to the bank for my brother (long story) and dropped stuff off at the dry cleaner. I don’t wear a whole lot of dry-clean-only clothes since I retired, and I’m seldom in the cleaner’s neighborhood (it’s near my old office), but they do such a fantastic job that I still take my meager remaining business to them.

I drive all the way across the city to go to the dry cleaner, because the one by my teen’s former elementary school is so much better at getting out stains than the one in my neighbourhood. I tried to give them a chance, and the woman who owns the place is sweet, but they don’t get grease stains out (I cook a lot, and an apron doesn’t cover everything) and NEVER has things done on time. A good dry cleaner is worth it.

Laundry twins with lillyjo today. But I had planned to do that from the start. Time to make some room in the laundry hamper for more dirty clothes, sigh.

I am concerned about Teflon kitty. She now has some wounds on both her front legs. I have no idea how they got there. She’s been licking those areas a lot lately, so maybe that’s the cause of the injury? Time to call the vet and make an appointment. I tried spraying a little hydrogen peroxide on the raw spots, and that went as well as you would guess… she didn’t care for that at all.

SOTD = Cuir de Lancome. I thought that I had thunked my sample this morning, but when I unscrewed the top some perfume flowed back into the vial.

Discontinued, yes; however, the EDP and the Parfum are wonderful as well for those who may be lamenting this.

Work rant so those who want to skip, it’s perfectly OK. They don’t make them like they used. I am talking about people. It could be me (but I doubt it). When I write emails, they are usually short and straight to the point. Step by step instructions and if I feel it will get too long, I schedule a call. OMG, all of a sudden, we have a bunch of people who keep making the same mistake of NOT checking their work, expecting me to solve it for them and making a very simple process way more complex than it really is. No can do. It is just highly frustrating that I need to keep reminding myself to keep calm and carry on. ..

You smell great and ugh hang in there. I’ve had work frustrations lately as well. Mine comes from the fact that I don’t use a lot of exclamations or smiley faces in my emails- I am not that kind of chick and I don’t think it’s professional. So I had someone recently tell another coworker “I don’t think Kelly likes me, her emails are so direct.” Well if you’re that sensitive, now I DON’T like you lol. Grrrrr.

No one ever coaches on how to write a work email any longer. Drives me nuts. Long-winded emails are not appropriate, especially when emailing execs. Also, lead with what you need…don’t bury the lede. And yes, emails, especially the more important ones (but really almost all of them) should go through at least a basic edit before you press send.

And “reply all”! Good heavens this one kills me. The default should NOT be “reply all”. Nononononono. I just left a group where every email was reply all and everyone had to pile on, and it just felt performative. Ugh. I am much happier in a group now that is very direct and straightforward.

(Definitely don’t get me started on passive voice. Since when did that become the default?)

Commando today — we had a crisis yesterday, now happily resolved with her safe return, when our dog Lucy slipped out of our backyard around midday and went walkabout until this morning when a kind neighbor called and said she was in HIS yard. She got stranded in an enclosure around an HVAC unit, which apparently she was able to jump into. But my hands smell of parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme — because I planted herbs today. So maybe 1/2 CP points for me! I’ll do better tomorrow now that our prodigal has returned.
