Wednesday scent of the day 5/3

Posted by Robin on 3 May 2023 156 Comments

It's Hump Day, plus World Press Freedom Day and International Sun Day. (And a quick PSA: I have temporarily disabled new user registrations due to spam. I will put it back when I can; meanwhile, if you want to join in the conversation here you are welcome to email me and I will get you all set up.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando but in my mind I'm doing sage in Comptoir Sud Pacifique L'Eau du Gouverneur.

Reminder: on 5/5, we're doing Scarborough Fair Friday. Wear a fragrance with parsley, sage, rosemary or thyme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Ooh yes, you do smell great! I quickly went through my sample of that one. I wish Guerlain sold those little coffret bottles individually. And as sprays. That’s not asking too much is it? lol

So…I went back this week to NST, mostly lurking….glad to see that it is still has same lovely vibe as ever….
But then I read about your sudden loss, Robin…I am deeply sorry …. Please take care…sending love.

My SotD was La Panthere (edp) by Cartier.
Went for an afternoon run, took a shower and now I am wearing Spell 125 by Papillon
That was one of the 2 perfume buys in 2022 for me, the other was Tabac Tabou (Parfum d’Empire)…..

Yeah I missed you all as well.
Somehow an immensely stressful project took a lot of my time and energy in 2021 and 2022. So I did not feel the urge to post or share stuff for a long time. I removed all social media apps from my phone and still manage to ignore them
But this place was still on my “good’ list, I was always wondering how everyone is doing, and indeed it luckily is still peaceful and friendly 🙂

I will probably share some updates on my life later, but long story short: all is fine.

One spritz of Fleur de Caissie, on a day when it’s snowing. Have to admire tulips, daffodils, and crocus-they’re so beautiful as they bloom through snow but man-I dont care for snow. It’s been bad weather here since the hurricane last Sept.

I am wearing CD Ambre Nuit. It doesn’t feel like spring yet, always rainy and cold.
I found this amazing website that sells vintage sealed perfumes and it is getting dangerous for me, i want to order everything.
I ordered Paco Rabanne Metal pure perfume and Weil Bambou ( old formula), Metal being my first perfume and Bambou from my University years in Istanbul.

Right now I’m in Knize Ten and giving special attention to its rosemary note. It’s definitely in there, as if someone put a sprig or two into the side pocket of a suede handbag. I love that our CPs sometimes direct our noses to the less-noticeable facets of old favorites.

      You smell lovely!
Funny thing: most scents I wear year round, but this one I only start to long for when temperatures rise above 20 /25 degrees (Celcius, in Fahrenheit that should be 70-something.?). I think that goes for most scents from that series…..

SOTD is L’Eau Bleue d’Issey Pour Homme. Lemongrass and lime in the opening are a bitter-sour combo, then the rosemary, cypress, and juniper berries come in, with a background of a complex wood+other supporting notes that I can’t tease apart. A cheapie blind buy that I was hoping would scratch my itch for a rosemary frag. It didn’t (too many other notes going on) but I would like to figure out a gin cocktail that tastes like how this smells.

On that note, I had a cocktail (or two) on Saturday at a restaurant that teamed up with Regime des Fleurs to promote RdF’s new frag. They made a drink based on the notes of the frag and you a get a dabber sample of the frag on the side to compare. It was like the 800th perfume I’d sniffed that day, so all my tired nose got were the main notes of gin + gardenia, but I like that combo in both the cocktail and the frag.

I have a calendar full of meetings today, so tea is a coffee pu’er to keep me peppy.

Wearing a JusBox Spring Dance sample for the rosemary note. Not my usual thing, but I like this cologne/spring flower fragrance. Very springy!

Nice weather today, but looks like some rain for our upcoming camping trip. Oh well–we’ll still have fun.

With a looming dentist appt this afternoon, I wanted to go easy on any perfume. Turns out I am doing a slam dunk (oh my beloved Warriors . . . had you only had one more last night. . . . anyway (shakes her head sadly)) on the CP in Diptyque’s Vinagre de Toilette Edition Méditerranée, with its short list of notes: lavender, rosemary, and thyme. 🙂

I have to say that the dry down of this was much better than I’d remember. It’s one of those where you keep catching whiffs of something lovely while sitting at your desk and then you remember it’s your perfume. I think I wrote it off early in my perfume journey because the opening is very traditionally “male” lavender. (And, to be fair, I really haven’t revisited that Penhaligon’s sample set much since I started my perfume journey.) It was working for me today, though.

Ahh!!! Lavandula! It was my first perfume love and I poured a chunk of my disposable income into that bottle. I made the mistake of selling it off and have never been able to replace it…

If memory serves the drydown was a very clean, cozy musk and tonka and the lavender is mostly in the top. Is it that way for you too? It’s been years since I’ve smelled it so I may be way off base.

I’m wearing Carner Barcelona Tardes from a swap sample, which I remember reading a lot about years ago on MakeupAlley. Very pretty, but alas too sweet for me. I might add some Rodin 3, which also has a geranium note, but is more green. Though really, i should be swathed in some spicy vanillic amber comfort scent, as L.A. is still quite cold and more rain comes our way tonight. Off to look up Penhaligon’s Elixir, thx to those who mentioned it.

I’m accidentally compliant with the CP because I just tried on some Byredo De Los Santos from a sample I had on hand and lo and behold, it includes sage! It’s quite nice really. I haven’t given this much of a spin before and will see how it plays out on me this afternoon. I’ve tried Mojave Ghost several times and it has zero staying power on me.

Lolita Lempicka from a sample. Can’t seem to wake up, and i should have put on something bright and floral and sunny, but since this LL version is down to a skin scent I will top up in about 30 minutes with Ormonde Jayne Osmanthus or Jo Malone Honey & Nectarine Blossom (i think that’s the one)

Yes, Lillyjo the old Yardley perfumes, mostly soliflores, are really good, the soaps are great too.

While reading about International Sun Day, I had a grade school memory. Solar Power was really getting a lot of attention and for a science experiment we cooked hotdogs outside using tin foil and a box and the Sun. I also remember a house in one of the new developments that was to be solar powered.
After a cloudy and cold morning the Sun is finally peeking out here now. I am wearing Rose all Day, in an effort to convince myself that I do not need any more rose centered perfumes. Lol.

I remember when solar cookers were quite The Big Thing. One local meteorologist used one during his weather forecast one day, which amused me and my brother to no end.

I’m taking it very quietly at the moment, I’ve got Covid again. The first time last July I had a headache for a week that nothing would shift, this time it’s more like a cold. My beloved is coughing horribly, but has tested negative so far.
I’m perfume-free so far, but post-shower I’ll continue trying the Manos Gerakinis samples I got on my trip.

I’ve been doing a lilac perfume study the last few days since I have quite a few options, almost all in decants, and I wanted to compare them to figure out favorites. And also because lilacs are in bloom here! It’s the most wonderful 2-3 weeks of the year.

    Favorites:
    Désarmant by La Parfumerie Moderne
    En Passant by Frederic Malle

Very promising, need to give more attention to:
    Marissa Zappas Lilac Dream
    Jacques Fath Lilas Exquis

    Likes but not love:
    Pacifica French Lilac
    Patou Heritage Collection Vacancies

    Least favorite:
    Phaedon Rue de Lilas

Love lilacs too. I’ve only smelled Lilac Exquis from your list — it was a green photorealistic lilac to me, but not very exciting. What did you think of it?

Yeah, I get what you mean. It’s not super exciting but nice and pretty. I think it’s a more aquatic, dewy lilac than some of the other lilac perfumes.

Welp. I went to urgent care yesterday because the cold I’ve been dealing with has been hanging on. Looks like I have pneumonia, and my social life has slowed down accordingly. Bleargh, time for chicken noodle soup! 🍜

I only recently got samples (was not a subscriber or early adopter 😉 ) and really like what I have sampled so far. I tried and loved Plum in Cognac and Praline in Maple. They sell 10 ml sprays too which is great. They have branched out and are selling bottles and the travel sprays through a few different online retailers now too.

Feeling like I’ve been dragged through a bush backwards today. So tired! After work, I never even left the parking lot, just flopped into bed as soon as doggo got kibbles and walkies. Then, right around noon she was nice enough to tap, tap, tap me on the head with her paw to wake me. Why? I have no idea. As soon as I lifted my eye mask to gaze at her balefully, she wagged, got up, did a couple circles in the bed, laid down and promptly went to sleep. Of course, I couldn’t go back to sleep. 😭

I need Corsica Furiosa today. That blast of green will surely give me a bit of energy. I don’t know if it’s CP compliant, but if it’s not, it should be.

Keeping you and your family in my thoughts, Robin.

Wore Masque Milano’s Lost Alice from a sample provided by a lovely NST’er. I have perhaps 1 more wear from it. Not quite a CP scent as there’s clary sage in it; not sure if this qualifies. I do have my eye on a bottle as it’s such a nice fragrance, not “too much”.

I helped it along a few weeks ago because I couldn’t stand my bangs anymore but wanted the perfect moment to get my cut so it looks good while I am on vacation. Let’s see how it goes!

I keep my hair pretty short too but I always k ow when it’s time for a haircut once the bottom of my hair starts curling out. It usually takes 5 weeks which isn’t that long but I’ve eked out 7 weeks but had to cut my bangs before then.

All these days since the swap has happened I had been wearing Tea for Two or Mandarine Mandarin. Never tire of them. It was the most successful swap I have ever had. Not that I had been swapping recently – mostly about 18 years ago on makeupalley. But this time I was very specific and love every single gem I received through this swap. Thank You very much to the people who swapped with me and nowsmellthis as a whole that allowed for this awesome swap to happen!!
