Tuesday scent of the day 5/2

Posted by Robin on 2 May 2023 170 Comments

It's Tuesday. A very happy birthday to Our Lady Donatella Versace. (Update: RIP Gordon Lightfoot.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando, and otherwise I was going to be stumped today for the community project, which I'd hoped to do in order (I do not own Demeter Parsley or Jo Malone Wild Strawberry & Parsley, and couldn't think of any others). I also wanted to again thank everyone who has left kind comments of condolence or written emails, it is so very appreciated even if I am not ready to respond to anyone yet.

Reminder: on 5/5, we're doing Scarborough Fair Friday. Wear a fragrance with parsley, sage, rosemary or thyme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Ikea Gokvalla teapot ("Pour your hot beverage in style and make the moment together feel extra festive. This decorative teapot with light-blue decor is part of the GOKVÄLLÅ collection that also has matching kava cups") is currently listed as "last chance to buy", $27.99.

Today I am wearing Yellowstone, which is a cheapie but enjoyable fragrance that I picked up while shopping with my tween daughter at Buckle. Summery fresh floral. Have a great day everyone! 🙂

You’re welcome. I was fascinated by the images of Central Park and reading about the removal of all the people and houses, mostly Black. I knew nothing of its history. Good luck with your flowers, such a great idea. I hope everything grows.

Wearing Zoologist Cow for the CP (sage). Perfect spring floral on a still cold rainy day.
I am headed to my daughter’s house for the second week in a row. She isn’t doing well and her husband is going out of town on business, so I’ll be there to help with the dogs. They have 3, 2 big and 1 teensy, and they are a lot of work! Makes me appreciate Larry the cat. Anyway, I’m just taking a little Coco because it’s her favorite perfume on me, so today is my Friday with you all. Have a good week, everyone.

Sending best wishes to your daughter that she gets better soon. I know I have been battling allergies or a sinus infection for 5 weeks. Very frustrating as I am never sick. I think everyone has probably gotten diminished immune systems after the whole Covid situation. A lot of people seem to be dealing with health issues recently.

Sad to hear about Gordon Lightfoot, a Canadian icon. “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” is a genuinely great song and I won’t hear different. It still sends chills down my spine.

Today I’m in 2001’s Michael for Men, an underappreciated masterpiece — tobacco, suede, dried fruit, and an overdose of the sexiest patchouli imaginable. I loved it the instant I smelled it.

As someone who has family in Superior, Wisconsin, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald resonates with me, and I remember listening to it time after time. The actual story of the Edmund Fitzgerald is also very interesting to me, and every time I see something about it I stop and watch or read the story.

Hello lovely scented people! Chilly here on the Coastal Plain of Virginia! Have not checked in for sometime. Have been enjoying my horde of bottles and have been adding a few oldies, finally purchased a small bottle of Santa Maria Novella Patchouli, blind, and it may very well be the one Patch to Rule Them All. Also attracts rescue greyhounds, the two in my life really love it! I also purchased Dior Eau Noire, small bottle, from the Dior website and it is as weird and wonderful as I remember. I have been loving some skincare products from a small company out of Albuquerque, New Mexico, called drylandwilds, perhaps the only sustainable perfume makers in the world, they harvest invasive plants and native plants and are currently doing enfleurage with locust blossoms. The company’s Instagram is a wonder and the complete transparency of their process is quite refreshing. I am not affiliated in any manner except as a happy customer.

    Hello NST fam,

Today I am sampling Teint de Neige (thanks CM8!), I’ve been in the mood for aldehydes and musk today. The opening has a slight harshness from the musk, but once it dries down it’s an easy cozy wear.

I discovered that Mizensir has a store in SoHo NYC. Musc Eternel was my favorite sniff from the batch (same style as Teint de Neige) but it is too $ for me to justify a purchase. It reminded me of a less challenging Musc des Sables from Les Indemodables. I also smelled the ouds. I only remember the name of one, Perfect Oud, which smells nothing like oud at all. I said this out loud to the sales assistant (which was lovely) and she said that it’s the perfumers idea of a perfect oud, which apparently smells like leather.

Thank you for introducing it to me, friend! I did sample Heliotrope Blanc briefly but haven’t worn it proper, I remember getting mostly ylang/jasmine, and it only lasted briefly on me. I was thinking it could be a good bedtime/post shower scent!

I’m sampling Hermès Epice Marine thanks to a generous nster. Definitely what I would call an ozonic, and I’m getting some abroxan, which is strange for a JCE creation. Glad to try, but it’s a pass.
    The sun is back today!🌞
I got a new mattress about 4 years ago which I love. Like Goldilocks, it felt just right…until it didn’t. For about the past 6ish months when I get up my hips just ache. Ugh, is this what it means to get older? I am not a fan.😡 Anyway, I’m not ready (financially) to replace it so I’m thinking a mattress topper may do the trick. I see temper pedic actually makes one. Any recs greatly appreciated!

A mattress topper does indeed do the trick. Got my last one at Costco, but next time will just get on Amazon so it doesn’t have to be lugged home. The Lucid 4″ has lots of positive reviews. Spring/summer is a good time to purchase, since it’s best to leave outside for a day or so to air out prior to putting on one’s bed.

I cannot recommend a specific brand but we have a foam topper on our own bed and on the bed in the guest room and they really have helped, especially with pain from pressure on the hips. The guest one is divine — it is, I believe, a slightly more dense foam than the one in our room. Both were unknown brands and I think from Overstock. Only caveat is that if you sleep hot, the foam toppers can make you hotter. I bought a “cooling” mattress pad late last year to be used over our foam mattress topper and it truly has improved my sleep. I still sleep hot but rarely wake up boiling in a pool of my own sweat (which used to happen frequently).

      Sheri-

I was considering that for Friday. I looked up the notes and it doesn’t have any of them, but does have basil so I thought that might be close enough. It is in the herb family anyway. Maybe we could get a 1/2 point. LOL.

I was going to say that sage has never worked for me, but then I investigated via fragrantica and found (to my immense surprise) that I have a lot of choices with a sage note. Dior Homme, Bel Ami, Kashân Rose, and of course Wood Sage and Sea Salt. Even Naomi Goodsir’s Or du Serail allegedly has a sage note. Now I have to go look at thyme!

Love reading what other people are wearing. It’s the most vile sort of spring weather here-1 or 2 degrees, so barely above freezing, and horrible rain whipping around. My hair is insane and when I went out I got cold water in my left ear-first world problems, I know!

Wearing Fille en Aiguilles, which is pretty prefect for this weather. I’m intrigued by the Dior Eden ROc makeup, which made me think of my Dior fragrances, so I also spritzed a cotton ball with Miss Dior Original EDT, so I could smell it and contemplate its beauty on my way to work. Today it smelled animalic and beautiful. Can you imagine wearing a spritz of this on your ankles, wearing a New Look dress? And if you’re interested in the history of DIor check out Justine Picardie’s book Miss DIor, about Catherine Dior, a war time hero. It’s not an easy read because she was tortured, but it’s an amazing biography.

Hope everyone’s day is good 🙂

I did a lot of chores yesterday which makes me feel productive. Can’t find a car/truck wash that I can fit in, so still needing a good wash behind the ears. Currently packing up the few odds and ends I have loose for the drive back into town. I found a Thymes candle in Heritage Pumpkin and it’s currently wafting wonderfully! Maybe CP Adjacent points for the company name..? It’s cool, cloudy and breezy here so even if pumpkin season is over, it’s still working well for me. 🎃

Yesterday, it was very windy most of the day; then, it was very, very windy for a couple hours with strong gusts. During that time the mail arrived, and four out of five of my Swapmeet packages were in it!! The mail carrier had to put them on the porch and one of the small boxes even started blowing away. I was gathering up all the treasures and my hair was flying in my face and I was literally in a happy whirlwind of perfumed treasures. Wearing one of them today, The Famous Santal 33! The leather and violet are just the type I love. I’m reminded of Ombre Leather 2018 and Atelier Oud Saphir. Like Angel, LVEB, and several others, I’ve read S33 is known to be smelled everywhere, but that’s not true in these-here parts.

I recently got a partial bottle of Black Opium Intense (the blue one) at Plato’s Closet. One quick spray made me think it’s going to be one of those modern perfumes that I just don’t smell much, at least when I am wearing it! But I will try to give it a fair trial.

The only time I have ever smelled Santal 33 is when I actively went sniffing for it at the King of Prussia Mall.

What you say, that is what I’ve read (but don’t remember exactly when or where) on some blogs and reviews by perfumistas on both coasts. It is very “modern” smelling – ambroxen? – and so not what I gravitate towards, but I could see it turning into a love. It’s one I’d reach for on a busy day.

I’m in Eau Dynamisante for cp points. Fragrantica says it has thyme and rosemary in it. I definitely get the rosemary; the thyme is more subtle. Thanks to a generous NSTer for the freebie! ☺️

It’s about time to switch out the contents of the Scented Cupboard. We should hit the 90’s on Friday (wait, “should”? Do we have too?!?), so I can’t put it off much longer. That’s okay, it’s always nice to get reacquainted with old friends. 🤗

SOTD is BBW Butterfly Body Cream and ELdO She Was An Anomaly. I think Butterfly would be great for a newbie that is exploring if they may like iris. It is a very pleasant scent to my nose.

COTD=Candle of the day is Sunday Morning by Brooklyn Candles. It is part of their minimalist collection. The top notes are pear and bergamot, middle notes are jasmine and gardenia and base note is amber woods. It reminds me a lot of Jo Malone’s English Pear and Freesia Cologne. It is just beautiful. I only wish it came in a larger size.

In recent snifftests with friends, SWAA has been hands down the most popular. Folks who think my perfume obsession is very odd, all gravitated to SWAA. Who knew? It is a wonderful perfume with a wider range potential if it ever got to department store counters, I guess.

I was sad to hear that Gordon Lightfoot died. He was one of the singer/songwriters I have most enjoyed listening to, ever since I discovered his music in the 1970’s. His songs have never left my playlists, even before there were such things as playlists. I got to see him live in concert once, too.
Donatella was at the Met Gala and tried very hard, but her dress looked ill-fitting and too much Retin-A made her so very shiny. I did like Jared Leto’s Choupette.
I’m wearing Delina Exclusif this morning. I much prefer the regular Delina.

I think I’m in Babycat. Narrowed down my mystery scents to two–so I believe what I am wearing (purely based on the published notes and nothing else) is Babycat. Pepper on top, with a decent dose of vanilla. Or, it could be Azuree D’Or 🙂 But I think it is Babycat! Enjoying it, especially that whatever it is that I am wearing has a real beginning, middle, and end (top, middle, and base notes).

Raining today. We had a break long enough that I am actually enjoying the rain today. Hopefully it will not last another 30 days! The spotted fawns have been frolicking out back, which adds to fun.

I just returned last night from a trip to NY to visit my daughter and her very lovable cuddly rag doll kitty, Knuckles. Though I somehow didn’t receive my invitation to the Met Gala, I did get my fill of haute couture at the Mugler exhibit. Yay!
I sampled Carlyle, the new scent from D.S. & Durga and experienced the Fueguia 1833 range in Soho. Walked out empty handed at both boutiques, only to buy two Diptyque City candles while they were still available.

I came across a herb in the botanic gardens called Devil’s Dung , which naturally caught my interest and is not in the song Scarborough Fair ….Parsley, Sage and Devil’s Dung. The leaves smelled like a lavender/ carrot and I think the tap root is responsible for the ‘ dung’ aspect. Anyway, it might have been sold at Scarborough Fair.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asafoetida
One of the dishes served in the fair in Mayor of Casterbridge is Frumenty, a kind of porridge that I reckon would have been at Scarborough fair ( which ran for six weeks during August and September). I might make a bowl to see what it tastes like as I am curious.

Wore Alien Fusion last night from a sample. It is as if Alien and L’Air du Desert Moroccain had a baby and the baby really took after the Alien side of the family at first, but then once the (semi-infinite?) dry down hits the Tauer spices come out strong with a juicy amber background instead of the dry Desert air.

I got excited about it and ordered a bottle from ebay (since discontinued) but now i think it might have just been FOMO and am suddenly not in the mood for heady spices and just want light and easy.

So wearing Hermes Eau des Merveilles and it hits the spot just right!

No rain but plenty of clouds today. Campfire Casserole has been made, with plenty of leftovers. I am watching for the batch to cool off a bit before I put it in the fridge.

“The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald” is one song that reliably gives me goosebumps ever single time I hear it.

Feels damp and chilly here, so the heat as been turned back on. Whatcha gonna do? 🤷‍♀️

SOTD is Sisley’s Eau de Campagne, which smells like an herb garden to me, but according to fragrantica the only herb note is basil. Tea today is Harney & Son’s Vienna, which is supposed to be black tea with notes of chocolate and nuts, but I am smelling those more than I am tasting them. The flavor I get is mainly roasty black tea, which is tasty but not as advertised.

Someone above mentioned their candle of the day and I like that. This week I’ve got a great Masala Rose candle from target burning and I’d put it up against a fancypants candle any day.

OK, I have heard about people crossing picket lines being called rats before.

Ooh! Parle-moi encore… What kind of Iris is it?

I’m late to the party, am still sort of dragging after my bad cold last week. I’ve gone out and done a few things but I feel constantly very tired and have been taking a lot of naps.

My SOTD is L’Ombre Dans L’Eau EdT from the Swapmeet, a generous freebie, which I’ve really been enjoying. It’s kind of light but definitely there, a juicy really green fragrance with a fresh rose. It’s a pick-me-up. On me it doesn’t have a lot of longevity but is just pleasant and pretty. I’m hoping to get my mojo back soon so I can get out and about more.

Sorry to hear that you still aren’t feeling right. That must have been a monster of a cold.

Been feeling the same way Calypso. I am on week 5 and I am never sick! Feel better soon.
