Monday scent of the day 5/1

Posted by Robin on 1 May 2023 211 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit and happy May Day! (And a quick PSA: I have temporarily disabled new user registrations due to spam. I will put it back when I can; meanwhile, if you want to join in the conversation here you are welcome to email me and I will get you all set up.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I am commando but in my mind I'm wearing the May-Day-appropriate dab of Diorissimo.

Reminder: on 5/5, we're doing Scarborough Fair Friday. Wear a fragrance with parsley, sage, rosemary or thyme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: The Rabbit Nature ("The Rabbit has a cute and playful look, and it is ideal as a decorating item in a living room, office or in a bedroom. The Rabbit is made of a mix of beech and oak wood, and comes with a leather string for hanging.") from Oyoy is €25 at KID in Dublin.

Cartier Rivieres Insouciance, lots of iris but I also get freshly cut grass. Perfect for a day at the nursery uptown as I am buying some plants for my balcony.

Aida was a hit with my daughter last night. Though she said the end was boring because she knew they were going to die (because she read the children’s book Aida based on the Opera) She loved Amneris -that was her favorite character.

I haven’t been to the Opera in 12 years or so but the ambiance has changed. I know now, there is no dress code, but I think there should be. Standing next to someone who is dressed in sweats and a jumper is low brow.

It *is* nice when people get dressed up for big-deal events like the opera: I did the one time I ever got to go to the Met (Turandot, November 7th, 2009, I remember it like it was yesterday). It makes the occasion even more special. But it’s also nice that people get to go to the opera at all, and I honestly can’t judge them much for simply wearing whatever they happen to have. (I agree that sweats are not really making enough of an effort: most people have at least one decent pair of trousers. But at least it wasn’t shorts and flip-flops. Then I would be judging the heck out of them, because that’s less than zero effort, that’s a deliberate statement.)

I would think that opera houses are not in a financial position to be turning away paying customers, anyway, no matter how they’re dressed.

I think it’s great your little daughter loved the opera! She’s very sophisticated 🙂 It will be a nice memory for you two to share 🙂

I have a lot on at work so it’s Eau d’Hadrien for the win for me-makes me feel like I tried, and never gets on my nerves. I really love this scent 🙂

So glad she enjoyed it!! What a great start to a lifetime of delight in the theater. As my mother would say, just because someone else does not care what they look like, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look your best! Still good advice…oh, and smell good, too.

I’m so glad you both had a good time. When I was little, my mother took me to Chicago for plays and concerts, once to the opera, and I was able to do the same with my daughter. It builds an appreciation for the arts that’s lasted a lifetime.

So glad she enjoyed the opera! I miss living in a city with a decent opera — Aida would have been lovely.

The dress code around here was always decidedly mixed, but it has gotten worse since COVID. But, given the state of the arts in my city, as long as they bought a ticket and showed up, I’m happy. Audiences have gotten a lot more casual in their listening habits, too, and my jury’s still out on that. It was pretty funny, though, when someone in the balcony yelled “Let’s rock & roll” right before Rite of Spring at the symphony a couple of months ago. 🙂

It’s wonderful your daughter enjoyed the opera, and she shows good taste liking Amneris, who has some of the most beautiful music there is. I remember listening to that opera on disc with my grandmother and we both sobbed at the ending.
I know what you mean about the dress code. It’s funny in Houston you will see everything from very well-dressed women with furs (in what passes for our “winter”) and then guys in jeans with cowboy boots.

I quite like it that there is a mix of clothing at the opera. I remember going to a couple of performances in Geneva ( free tickets) where everyone was dressed in long gowns, jewels and dark suits and feeling ill at ease in their company whereas at the Met or Sydney Opera House there was always a nice range of outfits from formal to tidy-casual that felt far more inclusive. Glad it was a hit with your daughter!

When I was in high school, my parents bought us season tickets to our local opera for several years. It’s a small city, so the performances were hit or miss. But one thing I remember was that I always wore the same dress (the black gap dress that Sharon Stone wore to the Oscars in the 90s), as did every other woman who sat near us! We each had one opera dress.

My favorite opera experience was when my parents took me to the Santa Fe Opera. That open-air auditorium and the incredible singing still haunt me. I really want to go back in the next few years.

Happy to hear that your daughter enjoyed Aida.

But may I play Devil’s Advocate for a bit? Opera and Shakespeare were the rock concerts and blockbuster movies of their day. The appeal was to a wide variety of people, not just the well-heeled. I can see how a very formal dress code could exclude some people who might be very enthusiastic about those things.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit. Today I felt like wearing TF Lost Cherry. I love that it’s gourmand(ish) without being particularly sweet.

Trying and failing to work up even a scrap of motivation to go to the gym, which is SO boring sometimes. My deal with myself is that I either go to the gym (which is in our building) or go outside, and I won’t be doing the latter, because it’s raining and supposed to rain more or less nonstop between now and Friday afternoon. At least that means it’s really spring, I guess? At least the trees will have leaves soon.

There are three cardio machines — treadmill, elliptical, recumbent bike — plus a rack of free weights and one of those weight machines that has about a dozen different exercises with a weight stack. I do weights a couple of times a week and at least half an hour of cardio every time I go, choosing one or two machines at random. It’s not very interesting, but a podcast makes it more bearable. I wish there were a rowing machine and a step-climber of some sort, though I guess I’d get bored with those too after a while, but at least it would mix things up a little.

        You?

I’ve been going to the gym for a year and it is so, so boring. I’m amazed, sometimes, at how long it can take to reach the number “10” when counting reps. Like, I think , it can’t just be “4” after all that lifting, crunching, pushing, pulling …I swear numbers slow down in a gym. I do cardio then weights and resistance for shoulders, chest, arms, abs and legs…..I am stronger now but every time I think, “there’s another hour of my life gone forever”.
How’s your German going by the way?

It’s perfect. It’s vintage, of course, because Le Dix in particular, and dusting powder in general, aren’t generally available anymore. Mine came as part of a set (EDP, soap and dusting powder) in a very old and decrepit gift box from what looked like the late 60s. The soap didn’t smell like much but I tossed it into my lingerie drawer anyway. The dusting powder is in a tub-shaped receptacle and still had its paper seal in place, and it smells lovely.

Adding a jewel to SpringPansy’s enabler tiara by wearing Ambre a Levres. Really appreciate this fragrance, since amber has historically been a difficult note for me, but this is neither dense nor baroque. Plus, practically perfume-math free at the Nez site.

Good to see you back, Robin <3 <3

Today I am in Chanel No. 22 EDP. Something really clicked for me last week and now I can't stop wearing 22. It is an austere older sister of No. 5. A cool beauty!

Weather got cold again here so I have been reaching for my heavy hitters. No plans for the CP yet, I think there is rosemary in my unswapped bottle of Di Ser Mizu, so I shall have to give it a second chance!

Over the weekend I sampled YSL Babycat (thanks MossyBerry!) and it smells just like Honey Oh's, my favorite cereal! A sweet, honeyed, slightly grainy/wheaty quality. I was delighted. It dried down into a gorgeous vanilla, very comforting indeed.

Wearing DSH Perfumes Iris Tuxedo from a sample received from the swapmeet. Very nice scent, but it didn’t make it to the full bottle purchase list. I will enjoy the sample while it lasts.

Beautiful sunny, cool, and windy spring day after a very rainy weekend. Having my second cup of coffee with a dash of turmeric and a thin slice of chocolate cake.

I picked up my Hermès scarf at the antique fair and I am in love!!Gorgeous and pristine in real life…lol.I met the wonderful Lady Marmalade(the name of J’,the thrifter’s business) and she’s every bit as cool in real life as online.I made her two samples from my Kiss Her and Kiss Him bottles(yes, the rockgroup Kiss had some perfumes in the early 2000’s-ish)because she’s also into fumes and a big Kiss fan.She also gifted me the most delicious homemade salted-caramel-and-white-chocolate fudge that she sells, and it is DANGEROUSLY good!!
And then I spotted perfume at the fair….J B SCORED!!Vintage full bottles of Ysatis and Mitsouko, and I am over the moon! They smell devine and are in pristine condition!
    It was a good day!
Hope everyone is having an awesome Monday!I sure did.

I’m between Penhaligon’s Elixir and Hiris this morning for my cp week of Robin inspired scents. Just went with a few sprays of Hiris – such a steely iris beauty.

Diorissimo will make an appearance later this week but would have been the perfect choice for May 1.

I have a little vintage Diorissimo to wear in springtime but I mainly just sniff it. As Allo said, it’s perfect for May Day but I’m watching a seemingly endless rain/snow mix falling on my neighbor’s blooming lilac bush and I’m back in a heavy sweater. So Chaldee it is, beautifully floral with that deep cozy base.

I’m getting ready for our first camping trip of the year, leaving Thursday for my birthday. Lots of lists — we always seem to forget something important on the first trip, maybe this time can be a first for remembering everything.

Those are definitely the best months for camping here, but campgrounds get so booked up that we have started braving the weather for May and June. So far weather looks mostly good for this week. We are also going to the drier side of Wash state which should help.

So glad our lilac are not blooming yet, they’d be drowned out by all the cold rain. The local magnolia tree is starting to bloom nicely though. No smell, just pretty flowers on a bare leafless tree. I’m not wearing anything yet as I’ve been working all morning on a home project, but will go with Amber Absolute after a hot bath.

If I come across a “real” magnolia in New Jersey, they are a white floral with a hint of lemon. Not as funky as citrus blossoms. But those only survive in sheltered areas around here, or the occasional hot house/arboretum. The pink and purple tulip magnolias are much more common.

Our spring has been annoying – it’s lovely during the week but we’ve had at least one day of soaking downpour per weekend for the last 8 weeks! Our garden is well behind schedule because we don’t want to plant in a mud pit. Or get drenched shopping for plants and then planting.

I’m currently reading Thomas Hardy’s Mayor of Casterbridge and although it is set at the other end of the country to Scarborough Fair it opens with a fair, the dramatic scene involving the hay labourer selling his wife to a sailor. The whole novel is interesting for its list of rural occupations and tools, and meals, and clothing…so many lists of trades that now seem like historical relics of the past. I am really enjoying it. I was drawn to the book by a recent article which was observing that novels like this ( and Dickens) didn’t feel obliged to fill in a character’s “ back-story”…so characters could be villains without a whole unfolding of “why and what happened to them”. Wearing Epidor. My thoughts are with you Robin.

Interesting choice of one to read or re-read. I haven’t tried re-reading much of any Hardy over the years but perhaps ought to. We read some of. his works in high school here (or used to) and I just don’t think that they can be grasped at that age.

Wearing Trish McEvoy n9 Blackberry & Vanilla Musk. I’ve really scooted through this one since Christmas when I bought it for my husband to give to me. There’s about 1/3 left! This is unheard of for me, I am a super small sprayer. But I keep it at my desk at home and go nuts – maybe up to 20 sprays a day sometimes, 3 or 4 at a time throughout the day.

Wearing Arquiste L’Etrog, purchased at my weekend visit to Ann and Indigo Perfumery in Cleveland! Ann was very kind and let me spend almost two hours sniffing and taking notes. She also mentioned that this October will be their tenth anniversary of the shop.

I’m really enjoying the L’Etrog so far: sweet but with a sharpness. Reminds me very much of TDC Bergamot. Also came away with a bottle of Masque White Whale.

The biggest hug to you Robin.

In Epine de Rose, which has been surprisingly divisive in the recent sniffer events I’ve hosted. Loves and hates! When I blind test it against other rose perfumes I own, it usually comes out first for me. But, is otherwise not terribly distinctive–I thought. But folks with far less interest in perfume than I have have had strong reactions to it, for and against. Curious~

In other news, in the swap I received lovely decants from an NSTer, all of which lost their labels due to a minor leak in one. I have three that are left that I cannot for the life of me decide which is which. Good thing I don’t rely on my nose and declared perfume notes for my day job! I sort of think one of them could be x, but then immediately doubt myself.

4 Vidalia onions were cooked down to golden brown yumminess!

The name of the dish is “Campfire Casserole”. The original recipe was simple: 1 lb ground beef, 1 can of black eyed peas, 1 can of corn, 1 packet of taco seasoning, and 1 cup of shredded cheese. Brown the meat and drain off the oil. Open the cans and drain the corn. Add the beans and corn to the browned meat. Add the taco seasoning and mix well. Then add the cheese and mix until everything is combined. Serve.

I have made a LOT of changes, including the addition of the sauteed onions and swapping out black beans for the black eyed peas. I also have a secret spice mix that I add in.

Try the original recipe first. You might like it fine without the onions.

        See above! 😉

The recipe can be spiced up or down according to one’s taste. I have put chopped fresh jalapenos in a few times, when I remember.

        Details above. 🔼

Infused oils are great for this recipe when you are cooking either the onions or the ground meat. It’s rather forgiving, unless you flat out burn something!

Thanks. I suppose it wouldn’t surprise you that I once melted many forks and spoons in boiling them? I should have taken them out after one boil but I didn’t 😣

Glad you’re having good weather and that rain was good for nature. Oh caramelized onions, my great grandmother used to make onion soup which was divine.

It was a very wet weekend here. Some places got between 3 to 6 inches of rain over 4 days. The latest drought monitor measurements will come out on Thursday, so we will see how things changed then.

French Onion soup is a favorite treat for me in restaurants. It’s been ages since I’ve had some.

Curious what your favorites from this line are please?

I love Scents of Wood too. So far I have Sandalwood in Oak, Vanilla in Bourbon, Praline in Maple, Cypress in Oak, Oak in Oak (in the big bottles) plus a bunch of the 10ml travel sprays: Leather in Cognac, Patchouli in Rye, Neroli in Acacia, plus a few more that I can’t recall (I am doing this from memory as I don’t have my perfumes yet here in Montreal).

Yes, I have been impressed w/ the ones I have tried and will get some more.

I also sampled Cashmeran in Cognac and enjoyed that one.

I keep sampling new houses and find many to be duds but it restores my faith when I come upon a “good” one 🙂 and conveniently justifies the never-ending pursuit. 😉

Rabbits? I’ve remembered them maybe once since 2016. Perhaps one day…

I’m in No. 5 L’Eau today. I had this vague “I need to wear Chanel” feeling, so I did. Later I realized it was because all the Met Gala coverage influenced me. I got 4 compliments today, so obviously I picked a winner.

I’ve been taking a break for a bit because I’m on a serious no-buy and you all describe perfumes so delectably that I want to try and buy! But I missed the community. Robin, thank you so much for creating this glorious space. I hope it can bring you comfort as it has comforted me through hard times.

Robin, so glad you are here.

Wearing Lilacs in the Snow by a company called Carter + Jane. It’s quite nice. I mean, it’s not En Passant or anything, but most enjoyable and long lasting as it is a rollerball oil.

I forgot the rabbits, but they are definitely all in for May Day/Labor Day – two were cavorting (NOT “cavorting,” just chasing each other, no doubt in anticipation of cavorting) on our front stoop the other evening. There will be rabbit rabbit rabbit in the coming weeks no doubt.

Third day in a row of vintage No 19, thanks to a most excellent chypre swap. It’s everything everyone promised. I wish it weren’t. I keep having those “What smells so good?” moments, followed by “Oh! It’s me!” Need to do a side-by-side with the original Silences to see if I really need to cave…

It’s in the 30’s and raining here, with a splash of wintery mix.
I’m wearing Alien Cuir for work tonight.
Yesterday one of my supervisors did something she shouldn’t have and today I told the store manager. I wrestled with saying anything because I normally try to mind my own business. In the end though, my loyalty is to him and keeping my job.

SOTD = Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche

Chanel represent! It is very very far from the Scarborough Fair.

    I did my 🐇 🐇🐇!

Remember my issue counting the back to the office %: 60 in office and 40 work from home? I can see what people are chatting about and there are MANY MANY things wrong with the calculation. If I were a manager, I would need to trust the numbers because I do not have time to review, add, subtract, and recalculate. For crying out loud, managers may not even have their right group in their numbers and it impacts the whole group! Before they roll it out, they should have tested more thoroughly but apparently, someone used a shortcut and you really can’t when you’re rolling out something that has consequences to the employees who are “out of compliance”.
