Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Universal Day of Culture 2023

Posted by Robin on 15 April 2023 149 Comments

Saturday is World Art Day, National Anime Day, the Universal Day of Culture, plus Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday. Sunday is World Voice Day.

We’re chatting (in between visits to the swapmeet) in our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you'll buy with your (real or imaginary) tax refund, whatever.

Note: top image is detail from Ginevra de' Benci [obverse], c. 1474/1478, Leonardo da Vinci, National Gallery of Art, public domain. You can read more about this painting here, and you can see the reverse side here (the latin translates to "beauty adorns virtue".

Just getting cozy after a shift in which one male patient looked me up and and said, “You must be the oldest nurse here.” So, I chose to consider that comment a compliment and replied, “And aren’t you the lucky patient to have such an experienced nurse looking out for you!” I kinda get where he’s coming from though, because it’s (mostly) all new young nurses here. And they all want to quit.🤣

Currently sporting a fresh spritz of SL Cuir Mauresque while snuggled up with T-Rex who very much approves of this scent.

Hope everyone has successful swaps today!

My local News had an article last week saying 40% of our Nurses here want to quit.

Not surprised, but there many other things nurses can do besides bedside nursing, and that is exactly where most are headed.

It hurts when you hear comments like that, but good for you for the positive spin on that.
Very soon there will be NO qualified, experienced nursing staff anywhere,so keep pushing us…I’ve had a rough couple of weeks with so much upheaval at work myself, that I was/still think I am on the verge of quitting the profession myself.

JB, I hear you! I hope these last rough weeks smooth out for you. It’s always good to research your options, and sometimes, just KNOWING you HAVE other options helps to reduce the stress and hopelessness one can struggle with. Keep your chin UP! 😎

The nurse situation is worrisome and totally understandable. I’m worried about a pharmacist shortage because no one wants to go to school for it just to be yelled at by customers, that’s the gist of something I saw online.

This makes me so sad that so many are leaving the profession. I had so many opportunities during my nursing career and loved almost all of my jobs. When I hear someone is going to go into nursing, I try to encourage them and let them know there are so many avenues they can choose. Unfortunately, a lot of us baby boomers are now retiring and that isn’t helping the situation. Thanks for hanging in there Deva. We need people like you!

Oh, I think most go into a non-bedside position and are quite happy there. IMO, the dissatisfaction of hospital employment, no matter if you’re an RN, RT, EVS, Dietary- is because of admin. Otherwise know as the medical mafia, whose goal is to make as much money as possible. Just read an article about a non- “pro-profit” (there is NO such thing!) who spent a whole lot of money to not only avoid giving this free care, but then hound the very people for payment even though they were entitled to free/reduced care costs. Here’s the article:

Oh, I definitely agree with you there. I only did bedside for about five years and then administration and education.

I can understand the medical mafia and have seen them make tons of money! Very sad.

And meant to say that it has nothing to do with love or hatred of the field. Most are leaving or want to leave because exceptionally poor management and administration and there has been a drastic change in the patient population in the last 10-20’years. The good thing about nursing is that if you get tired of one area or specialty you can go into a completely different area and it’s a whole new learning experience. This is what helped me keep my sanity for 30 some odd years.

How old was he? Maybe he was ineptly attempting to flirt with you! I myself am always a tad concerned when the young nurses with the stenciled on eyebrows come in to do hubbies’ infusions- the one yesterday couldn’t find a vein. But maybe I am stereotyping.

He was about a 70 something. There are many young nurses who are top notch. It all depends on experience, and a whole LOT on attitude. Last night I was in a room with my patient and the neighboring patient in the bed across the room had a visitor that stepped in. It was his son, who had not seen him since he was admitted and drove a couple hundred miles to get here. That patient’s nurse told him visiting hours were over and he had to leave. Technically, she was right. Her attitude when telling him this was very impersonal. This really angered me and I immediately placed her on my internal list of “People to Avoid.” It’s a looong list! 🙃

      Compliment it is.

I did my yearly survey requested by the big for- profit health care company here and I took the opportunity to tell them they need to reward and pay their nursing staff and NOT overload them. Not sure they will listen.

A lot of the nurses are quickly going to NP school.

I’ve worked with many nurse who were going on to NP or Anesthesia school when I worked ICU. It’s a double edged sword IMO because you’re shelling out a lot for school and often not making more money when you hit the flooded job market. There are anesthesia groups that will it hire nurse anesthetist because they feel that it’s their turf and taking money out of their pockets. If you get in with a physician group, many times you’re the one doing the “dirty work” like taking call all the time, doing nursing home rounds, etc. but if you can find your niche with a good group, you’re golden!

World Art Day *and* the Universal Day of Culture? Sounds like they’ve got all the bases covered. (I assume at least one of them was given this day because it’s also da Vinci’s birthday.)

I think YSL Yvresse is artistic enough to be an appropriate wear. I like it in part because it makes you think: a lot of scents are designed to be merely pleasant, and that’s fine, not everything has to be an intellectual exercise, but most chypres — this one, certainly — are thought-provoking. More than other categories, I think, they set your brain racing, they call up associations, they compel you to experience and re-experience them as they evolve over time. (Grès Cabochard and EL Knowing are two other chypres in particular that always evoke this reaction in me.) Yvresse, for all its sheer fun, and it really is fun, is a surprisingly cerebral scent. All morning I kept catching whiffs of it as I ran my errands, and every time, I thought some variant of, “Oh, *that’s* interesting!”

I’m failing miserably in keeping up with NST while I’m on holiday, but I’ve just read everyone’s confessions to Donatella in the last damage poll. There are some impressive hauls there! I had two of the Patou Heritage to admit to, but I’ll add those to the next quarter. That will be a lengthy list, as I’ve gone a bit wild here in Paris.
I was disappointed not to be able to get number one of my list, Serge Lutens has discontinued Mandarine Mandarin. I knew things were being dropped, but hadn’t realised that was one of them. The good news is that they now shower you with samples when you make a purchase at the Palais Royale boutique.
Rousse was number two on my list and I got that. I also bought 50ml bottles of La Couche du Diable and Écrin de Fumée. I would never previously have paid full price for the export line, but with no access now to Fragrancenet from New Zealand, I decided to pay lots of money now to avert disappointment later 🙂
We’re flying to Athens tomorrow, so are on to the last stage of our holiday. There are some Greek perfumers to check out…

Still in the remnants of PdN New York Intense from yesterday, lingering on the bandaid I have on my wrist right now.

Question for those of you who know NYC well: What are the “can’t miss” perfume stores? I’m headed there for a solo weekend next month, and plan to do some sniffing. I know that Luckyscent has a Scent Bar there, and I’m planning to stop in at Otherland and Aedes as well. Is there anything else I should just not miss?

There are some fun brick and mortar stores-like Fredrick Malle, Le Labo, Diptyque, Creed etc etc and others on the upper east side -you can walk around outside if its nice and then grab a cappuccino at my fav spot Via Quadronno and you are close to Central Park if you need to give your nose a break.

BERGDORF GOODMAN also has a nice selection of perfumes on their beauty level to sniff around. I find sniffing around there better than Bloomies or Macys because of the selection. But the SA will want to help you-so be warned!

Downtown were Scent bar etc is a fun place to explore. When you need to take break you can sit in the garden on Elizabeth Street https://www.elizabethstreetgarden.com and there are nice cafes and shopping around there too.

Don’t forget to wave at my lions at NYPL on 5th Ave if you go by 🙂

I’m in Jil Sander No. 4 this morning because Mr. G asked me to wear the perfume I wore daily during our courtship (before I fell down the rabbit hole, obviously). I had him sniff my wrist and asked if it smelled familiar, and he said it was pleasant but no, no bells ringing. I would have bet otherwise – he has a pretty good recall for scents – but then it has been over 10 years since I last wore it, so not really surprising, I guess.

I wore that when I was in university / had just moved back from Germany, too. I’ve gotten a decant of it lately and I agree, it smells a bit familiar, and is a nice perfume, but doesn’t immediately take me back to that time the way some other perfumes do.

A morning of errands, now resting and watching some YouTube. My house is decorated with many posters from art exhibitions, for eg Raphael the last years, a portrait of Shakespeare from the National Portrait Gallery, Hopper House by the railroad.

I’ve added an Emeraude set to my collection, I already had a bottle but this new one has a 15ml of the extrait, it still smells rich and fresh, I’m testing it now. I picked Mandorlo Di Sicilia this morning, bottle almost finished and it’s faded now and tonight I chose L’AP Passage d’Enfer which is smelling strong and marvellous, for some reason I remembered it was rather evanescent and wan, but it is not the case at all today and I am simply adoring it.

Anyway, since it is cool, I am bringing out one vanilla I can wear which is Sylvaine Delacourte’s Vahina. It is a floral vanilla with tonka bean, jasmine, orange blossom and neroli plus a few other notes. I think it smells best in the winter, but it really can be worn year round.

Smelling fab! Follow up on the nose piercing please! I’ve been very tempted but have not wanted a portal of entry for any reason the past couple of years. But, the temptation is coming on strong again! Will you have a stud? A ring? Please elaborate when you have a moment. 🙂

Happy Saturday, all. I’m still wearing Lost Alice which I wore for yesterday’s CP even though I forgot to post (there are at least 12 cities/towns in the US named Alice and I’m counting at least half CP points since the perfume was not named for them).

Had a long walk yesterday morning and then I spent all afternoon with a friend at the Museum of Flight in Seattle which was fascinating. We had a Taiyaki cone afterwards that was practically a meal. The walk yesterday was so nice that I did it again this morning. And bought myself an almond croissant and a Sevilla latte. Yum. That’s a lot of treats in a row! ;D

I love the Museum of Flight! My father was an engineer at Boeing from the mid 50s to the end of his career (he called his job “breaking planes”) and I visited that museum with him several times.

Nice sunny day in the upper 60’s. A good relief after hot temperatures for the past two days.
Very busy day at home, cleaning and organizing the cabinets in the kitchen. This is a task that I really dislike, but that is has to be done at least once in a while.

I just noticed a Nestlé Quick bottle in the fridge door this morning; don’t want to check the expiry date on that. Looks like it got knocked on it’s side and was hidden from view for a long while. I think a deep cleaning is due for my entire kitchen!

Cleaning the fridge is another task that I really hate to do. I also have a bottle of syrup that knocked on its side and spilled in one of the drawers. The fridge has to wait until next weekend. I am determined to finish the cabinets tomorrow.

    Happy weekend NST fam!

Stayed home and did a load of chores today. I just have a bit of oud oil on as I was burning various aromatics to test them for incense making. I learned that frankincense and myrrh don’t burn well on their on and need a wood base like mako to keep them ignited. I’ll have to work on powdering them before they get added to the mix.

I got some powdered Australian sandalwood and it smells SO good. Mild and creamy — the smell of the temples of my childhood.

Amyris Homme is in the MFK tester set I got and haven’t tried it yet. I like Amyris Femme so far though. I’m slowly going through the fragrances to try out. I’m wearing Aqua Universalis on one wrist and Grand Soir on the other today. They are on opposite sides of the fragrance spectrum and I know Petit Matin would probably have been a better choice with Grand Soir, but tend no to follow any fragrance rules.

Only weekend off before another 3 weeks of work, ugh! I did pretty well with my to do list yesterday but today I have to wrap up the taxes and then do some prep work for my job.

Commando today since I will be going out to exercise but yesterday I popped into Sephora and this particular branch had a good selection of off-the-beaten-path scents. I tried By Killian Good Girl Gone Bad and Heretic Dirty Hinocki. Actually liked both. Totally overpowered the Mojave Ghost sample I had put on in the morning.

Nothing really cultural today from me. Maybe some cooking tonight – black bean burritos with homemade sauce and vegan ceviche.

Wearing Angel Eau Croisière 2020, it’s interesting that Fragrantica doesn’t mention that there’s a fig note in this since that’s what I get when the Angel top notes settle down.
Our summer spell is over, it’s raining and cooler. Fine with me, Spring is too short anyway and jumping straight into the 80s F felt too soon.

Hello, everyone!! I have been the blog reading silently… Have been through some rough times right now. My job is a landscaper and a person who is the lead landscaper and has everything under control is leaving the job and is actually a family friend of mine. He is going back to Poland (where I was born too) so it is very stressful times at work right now plus some other things…
Have been furiously (LOL) looking for my HG tea perfume. I mean I’ve found one already called Imperial Tea by Kilian but well it is discontinued. Some other favorites include Creed Asian Green Tea, Memo Winter Palace (of course) and recently I have ordered a sample of Floraiku Levitating based on the reviews and the description on the website. I am totally smitten with that one. Similar to Winter Palace (which does not bother me I love both) and it also features the most juiciest, candied like meaning super sweet and yummi mandarin note along with the Ceylon black tea. Love it. So what did I do? Ordered another sample. It will be a while before I can come up with $350. I also have a set of Miller Harris Tea tonique arriving today. Very curious of it. Oh and a perfumedcourt sample of midnight black by Jo Malone is coming my way today as well. I am also very curious about Kierin’s Sunday Brunch, Shoshana Sunday and Vilhelm’s Dear Polly.
I do have some items I could happily swap away – am I still able to do that? Thanks

Keep an eye on the Kilian…he does cycle things in and out of production, so it might come back.

Of course you can still put an entry in the swap meet! It’s open til a week from tomorrow.
