Wednesday scent of the day 4/12

Posted by Robin on 12 April 2023 109 Comments

It’s Hump Day, National Licorice Day and the International Day of Human Space Flight. Birthdays: Beverly Cleary, Herbie Hancock, David Letterman, David Cassidy. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Kerosene Black Vines for National Licorice Day.

Reminder: on 4/14, for Pan American Day, wear a perfume named for a place in North or South America, with bonus points for places that aren't New York City.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Ooh, Black Vines! I think I’ll join you, Robin.
The beautiful weather continues, the buds on my maple tree outside my porch have burst open already. What’s the poem about nature’s first green is gold and nothing gold can stay? That’s how the buds look.

Nothing Gold can stay by Robert Frost. I love this poem. I first read it in the book The Ousiders. Lol.

That was a great book and series! Every tween or teen I knew had read it. She was amazing at bringing those characters to life. S.E. Hinton is 74 now….can’t seem to get a grip on THAT! 😳

Seriously I knew everyone read it. It was the closest thing we had to something like Harry Potter in terms of reach.

Still working my way through the pile of Profumum samples. This morning it’s Thundra, for which I had high hopes. The ad copy starts with “a solitary walk through a cool, damp forest”, which sounded lovely. But all I’m getting so far is the mint and some sweet-ish musk. I mean, the mint is nice and all, but it isn’t my idea of a forest. I won’t need more of this, and will switch to something else after a shower.

It should have been great, and it’s nice enough if what you want is a musky mint with pale woods. I wonder how the marketing team got it so wrong.

Have now switched to vintage Hermès Tabac Blond EdC, a thing that I didn’t know existed until I was fiddling around on the TPC website. It’s significantly different than the other formulations I’ve sampled — rougher, with a soil-like note at the top that was interesting and may have been meant to evoke cigarette smoke (or hide it).

I am wearing a perfume I got in Armenia, something made there. Smells sooo fresh, rosy , uplifting and the best of all reminds me of my summer there.
I will try to find a perfume for Friday’s CP.

Oversprayed my sample of Parisian Musc by Matiere Premiere from the discovery set. Got my first fragrance compliment at work!

Someone in the elevator was like, “Sandalwood? Does something smell like sandalwood in here?” which was really interesting because PM smells mostly of green fig, musk and light woods to me, no sandalwood at all. Maybe the creamy quality + woods somehow translates to sandalwood to some people.

I’m almost done with my Matiere Premiere discovery set and will have it up for swaps this weekend 🙂

I have a bunch of licorices to choose from for (Inter)National Licorice Day, but I’m sticking to my theme of place names this week, and today I’m in SL Arabie, one of those quintessentially Lutens-esque scents, a whirlwind of spices, dried fruit, woods, and resins, slightly strange but deeply beautiful.

Rodin Bis is on my list of things to try. I recently got a whopping bottle of Rodin 3 from a generous swapper and it’s a geranium iris rose jasmine cologne, very well made, seems to use good natural ingredients, nothing harsh. Sells for a song on Evilbay. I seem to remember reading that the nose behind Rodin Bis was Durga of D.S. Durga fame.

Beverly Cleary, how do I love thee? Henry and Ribsy were some of my best books from childhood. And while Ramona the Pest is an on going joke even in adulthood, I loved Henry and Ribsy so much more… 🐕

We got a teeny bit of sun yesterday so dashed out to do a little walk about and make the most of it. Some pretty views were gladly taken in. Lots of birds, a few blooms, and the sun! 🌞Back to full time rain today…😒

I spritzed a bit of Kyoto this morning to keep it light. Back to work tonight. The hospital proclaims itself “fragrance free!” But, apparently the only banned scents are the pleasurable ones since so many other odors run rampant. Personally, I’d much rather smell a big 80’s fragrance bomb than the more “natural” scents in the hospital setting. 😖

I’ll have a mandarins and yogurt smoothie for dessert.

It was Kenzo Amour today and I finished my 30ml bottle but I have a back-up, orange instead of fushia and I think it’s the original formulation although the fushia version was lovely too.
Tonight it’s vintage Miss Dior edt, there is a different lotv note from Diorissimo but just as good, and that buttery leather, so smooth, I could go on more about the loveliness, and I also have esprit de parfum and extrait but this edt is just perfection and put every modern perfume into perspective.

Amour is soft and cosy, I also have ‘le parfum’, good too, a little smoky. Ah l’Eléphant is great, so glad you like it, I would have it if it weren’t for its cumin note. Kenzo used to have such quirky perfumes.

In Jicky parfum. If it isn’t a placename in the Americas, it should be!

Jicky City, 39 miles north of Reno, population 27,347 per the 2020 census. Originally the home of several Great Basin tribes, today JC, as it is popularly known, is a pulse point for transcontinental sales in vanilla and leather. . .

Been going through my whole collection of perfumes, from fbs to decants, prepping for my homegrown sniffpalooza with some friends this Friday. Handing out scent wheels and pyramids, and offering decants. They’re bringing wine and food. Should be fun.

    Robin,
Yesterday I passed a few dreary hours trying to find out more about NZ’s oldest teapot. Clay objects were never part of the indigenous culture, and making teapots here ( rather than relying on British imports…mostly willow pattern from archaeological research, diggings around missionary houses) took a while, so it seems the first local potteries only started making domestic wear around the 1870s. Suitable clay was found in areas were coal was found, so my part of the country (Otago) had one of the very first, maybe the first, manufacturers at Milton. The company started by making drain pipes and toilet bowls, then branched out, and by 1874 was bringing in skilled workers to help set up making teapots etc. the only picture I could find is this one, from the 1880s. You can see the word MILTON stamped on its side ( still a small rural town, about 50km from Dunedin).

Oh, good on you! And what a very cool teapot, so distinctive looking. I think this must be a photo shot in Toitu Otago Settlers Museum where it resides:

Toitu Otago Settlers Museum needs to get with the times, though, and start using creative commons licenses so I can use their teapot picture 😉

I’m still hoping to bring on spring by wearing spring scents. Last night there was a snow advisory *sigh*. Today’s hopeful scent is Roja Dove Lilac. It was a blind buy when RD decided to stop making most of their soliflore fragrances, and it was heavily reduced in price. Thankfully it worked out.

Those black jelly beans were my Dad’s favorite when I was a kid. He liked them because neither me nor my brother would touch them.

        They’re actually quite tasty…

Somehow I went from hating black jellybeans to liking them as I grew up.

My brother still hates them with a fiery passion, though.

I’m trying out Rosine’s Eloge du Vert which I’m sure has many notes but I get mostly green bell pepper and rose and that is a win in my book. A gingery vetiver note emerged in the dry down.

Amsterdam Melange tea again today. I’ll probably stick with it until I finish the bag. I’ve decided that it is the almond flavor that really distinguishes it from any other Earl-Grey-esque tea I’ve had before.

Low 80s today so we turned on the AC and I’m not happy about it. April is usually a glorious month of open windows with no heating or AC driving up the bills.

Green bell pepper and rose?? Don’t think I have ever heard of that combo before.

I *so* hear your gripe about having to turn on the A/C. Annoying!! 🤬

MMM Wicked Love was also supposed to be green bell pepper and rose, but all I got from my sample of that was fruit snacks. The Eloge du Vert delivers.

We got to 84 in these here parts and I had already turned off my heat before I left the house. I will tough it out without turning on the AC!

SOTD = Scents of Wood Plum in Cognac

One of the best Scents of Wood offerings, IMHO. Another lazy evening so no IG post on this.

In other news, a co-worker is unexpectedly out for a few weeks and these are the weeks when we have a surplus of deadlines coming up. Guess who got voluntold? Overall, it’s not a hardship but we are already down one person (since January) and I already picked up some of his work …

Anyway, the note regarding being stricter about the 3 days in office and 2 days WFH (but you can do 4 or 5 days in office at your option) dropped today. I did not join in the fray but many employees were unhappy. I always say, what did YOU do before March 2020? The thing I need to remind my boss about is that he mentioned making up for missed days even if it’s a sick day or a vacation day and I told him no. I will go back to him tomorrow and say what would HE do if he is out on vacation? How will you make it up? You really can’t. I get 25 days of vacation and 3 personal days plus up to 12 sick days (if I max out my 2 years’ worth of sick days). This means that I have to go into the office 40 days “extra” to make it in 60% of the time? No way Jose and Josephina!

So many managers seem to have RTO paranoia. Like all of a sudden, people will skive off if they aren’t stuck in a cubicle for 5 days a week.

It is also quite cheeky to get strict on RTO at the same time they are having you pick up extra work for they colleague who is out.

DSH Clouds of Flowers today. I am now officially enrolled in acupuncture school which begins in a few weeks. Most of the first trimester except for point classes and chi gong are online which is a little disappointing to me
