Tuesday scent of the day 4/11

Posted by Robin on 11 April 2023 203 Comments

It’s Tuesday, National Pet Day and World Parkinson’s Day. RIP Lasse Wellander and Al Jaffee. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Comptoir Sud Pacifique L'Eau du Gouverneur. Tea at the moment is Upton Jin Jun Mei, brewed with a few cocoa husks.

Reminder: on 4/14, for Pan American Day, wear a perfume named for a place in North or South America, with bonus points for places that aren't New York City.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is a John Bartlam teapot made in South Carolina in the late 1760s. Read more in The story behind the Met’s epic £460,000 auction battle for ‘America’s first china teapot’ at Antiques Trade Gazette or Made Before the Boston Tea Party, This Teapot Cost $800,000 at The New York Times, or see the teapot's description at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In a judicious application of Shalimar—->Mexique for N America.
It’s actually going to be in the low 70s today!
Signed up for emails from Fortnum & Mason, and got a message about their new coronation collection today. Here’s the mug~

Wow, am I first? If so, it’s because I’m in Japan on vacation, eating fabulous food and exhausted in my hotel room after a day of gallivanting. Scent is Eau du Métro. Yuck. I’m in Osaka now, but I’m also spending time in Kyoto and Tokyo.

I thought I’d come here and ask for advice for things to purchase! My primary goals are to pick up some hair conditioner (to fight frizz), hair oil, and face cream. But also, I want to buy anything pretty—ceramics, home decor, clothing, anything is fair game. Nothing too expensive, but nothing student-grade, either. I need things that will *last*. I know what great taste you perfumistas have, especially when it comes to hair/skincare, so I thought I’d ask you all! Thanks in advance for the recs 🙂

Enjoy your trip!! I imagine Japan is gorgeous now.

I don’t have hair or skincare recommendations, but I’ve recently gone down the rabbit hole of vintage Shiseido perfumes (look at how gorgeous the bottles are! https://www.fragrantica.com/news/Interview-with-Perfumer-Tomoo-Inaba-and-Some-Rare-Shiseido-Perfumes-9091.html). I hear Japan has plenty of secondhand stores where vintage perfume hunting could be fun!

Another thing could be fun is Japanese incense and incense holders, especially if you can find a specialty store 🙂

When you’re in Tokyo you should consider a visit to the Ginza Itoya. Even if you’re not into stationery and such (yet), it will melt your brain: floor after floor of almanacs, hand-made paper, fountain pens and ink, every imaginable writing implement and aid. Japan takes writing by hand very seriously, and their stationery culture is astonishing. You can try out the fountain pens, and they range in price from practically free (a few bucks for a surprisingly excellent and durable Pilot Petit1) to astoundingly expensive (thousands of dollars for a handmade raden pen). Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s a real experience.

If you have a day free — unlikely, I know — you could consider a trip to Kamakura, only an hour outside Tokyo by train. It’s a charming little city with many temples and shrines, chief among them the humblingly immense bronze statue of the Great Buddha of Kamakura, well worth a visit.

I’d also find a yukata shop, because the cotton robes are not expensive and they make a fantastic souvenir of your trip — so comfortable, and such beautiful fabrics.

Went through my collection and found 5 things that are named after places, so that’s a week’s worth, but only one named after any place in the Americas, so I’m saving that for Friday. Today is 1987-vintage Rochas Byzance, the French name for Byzantium, and even though it’s one of those massive tuberose orientals that showed up in the wake of Dior Poison, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever smelled — a dazzling peridot-green opener exploding with aldehydes, then a dense, complex floral oriental that never settles down into any one thing. They really don’t make them like this any more.

It’s completely changed. It’s very modern, with pear and musks and “blonde woods”, and has nothing in common with the original other than the name. They can say it’s a “modern update” of the original, but anyone who ever smelled the original would beg to differ.

I’ve also been organizing my collection in preparation for the upcoming swapmeet. So far I will have bottles of Chanel No 5 EDC (vintage), Kilian Moonlight in Heaven, Hermes Vanille Galante, Di Ser Mizu up for swapping. Will have to go through my travel and decants next.

Ha! I’m of the opposite opinion. Pre-COVID half my day was phone calls. Now I’m having the same conversations but because it is over Zoom or Teams, people turn on their cameras, and my reaction is “you and I didn’t need to see each other’s faces in 2019, why do we have to now?”

I think a lot has to do with context these days. If you are on the East Coast, and you’ve invited me to a call at 7 or 8 a.m. my time, please do not expect me to be on camera (yes, I am in my PJs and I may be eating breakfast while on the call…but I AM on your call and functional). But…if it’s a one on one meeting and we are located in different places and rarely see each other IRL…turn on your camera. Big meetings? Turn on your camera if you are presenting or speaking. Otherwise, not necessary.

In Frederic Malle En Passant for another day of lilacs.

I am off from work today to decompress. I took a long walk in my neighborhood early this morning to enjoy the beauty of many trees and plants in bloom. I am missing my doggie Yei terribly, because he was my faithful companion on my spring walks.I am running some errands now, and later I will grab a cup of coffee and a sandwich from my local coffee shop before heading to the park to spend part of the afternoon there. We are having a gorgeous sunny day in the mid 70’s!

Au Coeur du Desert today, applied last night before bed and will re-up this morning. No deserts around here. Just rain, rain, and more rain. It hasn’t stopped but will occasionally slow down enough so I can get doggo out to potty without her getting soaked.

I’ve missed the Arizona sunshine so much this winter. I’ve already decided that I will do one more contract after my current one to take me through summer, then I will take all of fall and winter off to gallivant the SW. I’ve been wanting to thoroughly explore NM since forever and come hell it high water, I mean to do it this fall and winter! I’ve said it out loud (sort of) and now I must follow through. 🙃

I’m waiting for multiple eagles to 💩 and I plan on stashing it all away to help fund my time off. Thank you Arizona! Thank you Oregon! Thank you Washington! Thank you federal government! I cry every time I get paid because of the taxes (I don’t even claim myself to the max is taken out) but it’s always a pick-me-up to get some back and squirrel it away! 💰💸💵

What an interesting teapot story, and what intriguing decoration with the pair of exotic birds( pelicans, Storks, herons…?). Thanks for the links. So, we are on about day 20 000 of drizzle and sodden mess, mist and bedraggled sparrows, wet dog smells and piles of dirty washing. You could argue that it’s beautifully melancholy…low cloud, the glorious scent of fallen leaves, bright patches of colour from berries in holly trees, a mirror-smooth harbour shining silver under the endless grey cloud….lucky I have some good books. Also lucky that it turns out there are a lot of odd place names in North America that can be manipulated to tie in with perfumes. But today I’m going to Canada with Daphne ( sorry Daphne, Alabama). Daphne Island on the Athabasca river, Alberta named after the daughter of a surveyor and no relation of Daphne Guinness or anything to do with CDG.

Ordered a bunch of designer brand samples from fragrance.net recently. Got about 20…like 2 of them maybe. Nothing I would wear regularly. The one of the three I like most so far is Angel Aqua Chic. Probably because i already like Angel and this is Angel with the volume dialed down from 11 to 5. The others are Comptoir Sud Pacific Vanille Abricot and Vanille Blackberry. Those are super likable.

Examples of the samples that I got and didn’t enjoy: multiple Versace women scents – all too screechy on my skin. Several Miss Dior versions, all too sickly sweet on my skin. Dolce & Gabbana Dolce Garden, which had too much coconut which I can only enjoy in Bronze Goddess.

One I like okay is Givenchy Live Irresistible Rosy Crush, but there’s a lot of pepper which gets overwhelming quickly.

Another I liked was Gucci Accenti, I don’t know if I would wear it regularly but it was a fun time travel to the 90s. I never wore it then, but it is so 90s in its plush quality that I closed my eyes and saw my old floral tapestry bedspread and heard the Friends theme song.

In person I also tried Kayali Yum Pistachio 33 or whatever the full name is, lol. Surprised myself by really liking it! Enough to buy a purse spray – and since sold out on Sephora in that size I went to the Huda Beauty website directly. Threw a few other samples in the cart to get free shipping, so looking forward to those arriving next week.

Yum Pistachio is very enjoyable. I saw it was done by Olivier Cresp.

I am not usually a gourmand person, maybe 10% of gourmands work for me (they often make me nauseous which is unfortunate – am not a snob!). And the last pistachio scent I tried was the Laura Mercier one, which was overwhelmingly sweet and I had to wash it off quickly. That was maybe 10 years ago and I am just now brave enough to try another pistachio – and so glad I did!

One of my friends is Very into gourmands, so it is fun to share a few crossover scents 😀

I recognized the name Olivier Cresp but just did deep dive on his work – thanks for pointing that out so I could familiarize myself with his lineup! I forgot he did Angel, Modern Muse, Light Blue, Black Opium, Kenzo Amour – just to name 1% of his work lol.

It’s definitely fun – and I have a friend who runs her own fragrance blog and she is always happy to rehome the samples that don’t work for me into her library. We hang out for a day every few months, I bring over what I’ve collected to pass along and a handful from my own collection that I think she hasn’t tried yet. Then I have free reign in her collection to sample whatever I want there. We also make a massive smorgasbord and nosh all day while chatting and smelling. It’s the best.

I personally don’t consider them done until either the refund arrives, or the check to pay them is sent out. But that’s just me. The worst is over, lol.

Glad today was a better one. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt to have Teflon and Spooky as accessories.

    SOTD = Kilian Angels’ Share

Inspired by Deva! I am too lazy to make a post but may post something else. Strangely, I have a surplus of pictures.

So, I got into a rabbit hole today of work-adjacent stuff. I was reading an FAQ on appropriate “business” attire and crocs were maligned and relegated to the dust heap of what NOT to wear. IMHO, that’s utter nonsense to put in a blanket statement. Anyway, while searching through additional documents, I saw the following:

Acceptable – Minimal tasteful jewelry and fragrances

Not acceptable – Excessive jewelry or excessive use of fragrances

… and here I thought we were a No Fragrance company. It makes me wonder though who is the arbiter of minimal versus excessive 🤔

“Acceptable fragrance” = stuff the author likes
“Not Acceptable fragrance” = stuff the author does NOT like

      So very subjective!!

I wonder what excessive jewelry entails too, will I get kicked out for wearing 3 necklaces and 5 rings and 2 bracelets? Hahaha

This seems par for the course 🤣. Just kidding. The policy has changed over time. I did not see it but we used to have something about No dangling earrings longer than x inches.

      HaHa!

So true what Jalapeño said about acceptable fragrance being what the author likes.

I remember it was less than a decade ago the main hospital in which I round had a poster set up demonstrating unacceptable attire by staff. Included were tattoos, piercings, unusual color hair. They could NEVER do that now, they would lose 50% of their nurses. And really, who cares what someone is wearing when they are attending to you when you are sick.

IIRC, we had a no visible tattoo policy, which now says no visible offensive tattoo.

Wearing a sample of PdN Caravansérail Intense. Dark roasted coffee beans and cardamom are the most prominent. It has a dry, scratchy texture, like ground coffee. The immortelle provides a hint of sweetness, but given that immortelle isn’t all that sweet to begin with, it is a small hint and the overall impression is a black, spiced coffee with no sugar at all. There is a hint of plum at the end of each whiff, and it gives the impression of licorice, but blink and you miss it. At first I thought the patchouli was strong, but now it isn’t standing out to my nose.

Tea today was more of the Amsterdam Mélange. Wishing I had gotten a larger bag of it, but space was at a premium in my suitcase.

Does that tea place ship overseas? Or are the shipping rates extortionate?

Yes and yes. I have colleagues who have to travel to our European HQ regularly. I’m tempted to see if I can have the tea shipped there (because shipping rates with the EU are reasonable) and have one of them mule it home for me.
