Wednesday scent of the day 4/5

Posted by Robin on 5 April 2023 131 Comments

It’s Wednesday, National Caramel Day and Star Trek: First Contact Day. Birthdays: Booker T. Washington, Bette Davis. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Tauer Perfumes Incense Flash. I might layer a floral over it later.

Reminder: on 4/7, for Billie Holiday’s birthday, wear gardenia, or wear one of her favorite perfumes (Coty Emeraude and Bourjois Evening in Paris) or wear a fragrance inspired by her (Serge Lutens Une Voix Noire, Maria Candida Gentile Lady Day, Strange Invisible Perfumes Lady Day, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Don't Explain, to name a few).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Un Jardin Sur Le Nil, from one of Hermes minis. Pretty and interesting.

Tea this morning is Earl Grey by Mariage Freres

    SOTD Oud Fumé
The Bergamot in the opening of this is matching my tea 🙂

Very busy day today volunteering. Only one spray of Oud Fumé since I don’t want to compete with that old book smell of the library. 😛

Makeup today El Double Wear, Victoria B eyeliner Lancome mascara and I need a nude lip -not sure which one. Maybe the Beckham one.

When I got Sheltering Sky from the library they had to go down to the basement stack and instead of bringing back a 1990 paperback they brought a hardback which turned out to be from 1949, a first edition ( not sure which impression) from the English publisher Lehmann. Very battered with stains from people resting cups on it, and multiple library card envelopes and old sticker.s and stamps. But the paper was so thick and soft, almost like suede, and the smell was peppery. It was such a pleasure to hold it and imagine it’s life and readings from its first days in our old Carnegie library to now.

The other funny thing about the book was that they hadn’t managed to fit the word “Sheltering” across the spine so had broken the word into two lines so the title on the spine was “The/ Shelter/ Ing Sky”

That’s a great story about the book. I have a few old books from my dad that are like that.

I’m in the middle of The Sheltering Sky right now (thanks to you and LTSG). I can’t say I’m thrilled with it, although it’s certainly interesting. I don’t like any of the characters and I find it negative. Nevertheless, I plan to finish it. I think my feelings about it are partly in comparison to The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett which I had just finished and absolutely loved.

The main character I think is close to Paul Bowles himself.
When Tennessee Williams (who wrote Streetcar Named Desire and other plays) reviews this book he summed it up : “ I suspect that a good many people will read this book and be enthralled by it without once suspecting that it contains a mirror of what is most terrifying and cryptic within the Sahara of moral nihilism, into which the race of man now seems to be wandering blindly.”

Agree, LTSG. Interesting quote from Tennessee Williams!

Wow! That is an amazing experience to read from an old book like that. I have had the privilege to be in the presence of old books in the Rare Book division – and even the sound of the pages turning is different

SOTD is Violette Volynka by Hermes. Spring has put me in the mood for violets. I’m also taking a leatherworking class later, so this will pair nicely.

Last night I sampled Shalimar MVP (thanks madtowngirl!) and I was smitten. Love the amped up amber base with vanilla. Reminds me of Coromandel’s drydown with much less patchouli. Amazing stuff, I almost didn’t want to take my shower because I smelled so good!

Claiming CP points for Black Orchid Voile de Fleur, an interesting take on gardenia. Milder than the original Black Orchid.

CP-adjacent today with a different white flower in ELdO Jasmin et Cigarette. The story on this one is kind of the right time period for Billie Holiday, so it kind of works?

It’s my first time trying this one from the sample set, and I had to go to Hajusuuri-level spraying to get much of a sense of it. It’s interesting — I’m not getting tons of jasmine so far, but I am getting the cigarette, which fortunately isn’t too strong.

The first time I tried J et C, I got a beautiful, strong jasmine. No ashtray like some people have, thank goodness!

But now that sample is less floral and more tobacco leaf. Weird.

Wearing Oriza L. Legrand Reve d’Ossian for my incense week. The incense, amber and aldehydes in the opening are wonderful. The drydown is mostly sweet resins. This is a beautiful take on incense and I wouldn’t mind having a full bottle in my collection.

I am having a very busy day today. My mother had an appointment with he thoracic surgeon early in the morning. It is very difficult these days, but she is still not giving up on life. Chemo was already stopped and she is not given more than 6 months. We are having coffee now at Starbuck and she is in very good spirits, despite her weakness. That’s uplifting.

    Happy Wednesday! 🌻

I woke up with a slight tension headache today and I think I’ve figured out why. I found out earlier this week that my uncle has cancer, and it’s definitely been weighing on me. I called my cousin (uncle’s daughter) last night to check in on her and ended up having a nice long chat with her. Sigh, it’s not going to be a pleasant few months ahead for her.

No SOTD, but I’ll be making some samples for a swap later so I’m sure I’ll be in a lovely cloud of scents.

Oh, no, it was said tongue in cheek! Chinchilla is actually a very warm honey, furry, animalic type of scent. When I said the “best gardenia,” it’s because it has NO gardenia because I’m generally not a floral lover. But I do agree, the choices on her website enormous….😳

I manage to get all my vaccinations and not spend a cent on soap, lip glosses or any other temptations while doing the 15 minute wait. That’s a first. Felt fine afterwards so that’s a bonus; even my arm forgives me. So beautiful here at the moment. Everything is golden and the afternoon skies have that deeper blue of autumn, with long shadows streaking the hillsides opposite. Wearing Tauer Tuberose gardenia.

On my second cup o joe and hoping to head to the beach as soon as my hair dries. Cloudy today so unlikely I’ll get a glimpse of the Pink Moon tonight, but it certainly was lovely last night. Looking up through my skylight it was as bright as the sun. 🌝

Do you use the sticky dates “plain”? It is too sweet for me but love a dab mixed into rose or citrus. I am thinking of buying a back up bottle I love it so much.

      Absolutely gorgeous moon here tonight.

My nose is slowly getting better at recognizing smells. I’ve been sniffing my essential oils daily, and I think it’s helped. Cedarwood smells a bit earthy and dirty; eucalyptus smells refreshing. I also have a more recent bottle of Dior Poison in the extra fridge that smells super strong! I’ll have to try sniffing my vintage bottle.

Wearing Lancome iris Dragees today. On the weekend for the party, I wore Chanel La Pausa.

It’s just lovely and fluffy to my nose. Top notes are bergamot and pink pepper; I don’t get any of that. Mostly I get sugary almond and iris. There is musk in the base; that’s what probably makes it so soft and pillowy. It creates a cloud around you. Bonus points for the beautiful bottle design.

Sadly, I believe it’s been discontinued but I picked up my bottle when one came back in stock at a discounter. I was glad I asked to be emailed when it was back in stock! I didn’t hesitate to snap it up!

I wore Chanel Gardenia, but it’s long gone by now. I just got home to see my Dame order had finally arrived, so I have a spritz of Rose de Mai soliflore on one hand and Singularity on the other.

I can’t decide! I catch some whiffs and it feels like a lovely old school floral, but for the first hour, it was also pretty astringent, at least on me.

    Hallo and Hi!
Crazy busy week at work,at least weekend starts tomorrow!
I had no idea about the cp this week…
    So far it has been:.

Monday:Kayali Yum Pistachio Gelato(this is beyond gorgeous,I bought a 10ml on Saturday and already wore it twice!Notes might read as sickening sweet, but don’t be fooled!a real gem from Kayali)

Tuesday;Initio Musk Therapy.Could this be my favorite Musk perfume ever?Strong contender!

Wednesday:Kayali Lovefest Burning Cherry. It’s a pretty perfume,same-ish DNA as TF Lost Cherry and I think a great cheaper alternative to the TF.
I’ve been on a mini-mission to find more cherry-centred perfumes, but there is not a lot of greatness or variety in the genre it seems. My absolute favorite still remains Aromatics Black Cherry.Nothing beats that spicy, juicy cherry-fest(SOOOO GOOD!Discontinued sadly)

    Any other cherry rec’s?

    Have a great week everyone!
    XO’s🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

No cherry perfume recs from me.

But you are the second person here to give a rather positive review for the Kayali Yum Pistachio Gelato. Interesting…

I like the cherry in Prada Candy Gloss, but it isn’t really a cherry frag — it’s more of a vanilla-almond frag with a cherry note.

La Petite Robe Noire Black Perfecto has some cherry in it :). Actually, it looks like a lot of the Petite Robe Noires have cherry in them, but Black Perfecto is the only one I’ve smelled.

Joining SheriG and perfumelover67 in an incense perfume today. I needed one; both cats threw up today. One deposit was on carpet, which is a lot more work to clean up than a nice hard surface. Guess I should be thankful it wasn’t down a HVAC vent.

SOTD = Passage d’Enfer, from the Sample Stash. Maybe this will be another thunk soon?

Oh no on both cats! I hope they are feeling better now. My cat would usually do that on the carpet, once even on the bed!

Sending you positive vibes, Jalapeno! I’ve been reading comments later in the evenings so it seemed to late to reply.

I usually am reading here at odd times, so a reply will be noted. I might not be able to respond until the next day, though.

You reminded me that one of the cats *had* been on the bed before she jumped off. So I dodged that mess today, whew!

I hope the kitties are feeling better. The Woolite carpet & upholstery cleaner (with the plastic brush top) worked well for me when my senior chocolate tortie was not making it to the litter box in time.

Teflon has a lot of thick, plush fur that she grooms a LOT, so she hurls some pretty good sized hairballs. And if her lunch is sitting on top of one of those, bombs away!

I usually don’t have both cats unload on the same day (thank God!).

So I got this email offering a 30% off an entire purchase. The code showed up as “*|reward_text|*” which does not look a discount code. I tried it just to be sure and nope. I emailed the company and heard back within one business day that oops, they will give me a one time use 30% off code because it was supposed to be 250 points (not sure what this gets me) and not the discount. They acknowledged their mistake and sent me the one time code for 30% off. Yes, I used it. 😇

My SOTD is Guerlain Mayotte. Not a gardenia scent but it does have white florals, though ylang ylang dominates. That’s OK because I love that note a lot. It’s a very buttery somewhat too-sweet scent. I still haven’t found my sample bag of gardenia scents, but will look some more. We’ve had a lot of rain today with much more and possible flooding forecast for tomorrow–wish us luck! At least it’s cooled things off, from 90 yesterday to 70 today. I’ll take it.

I’d still on a Vilhelm sample kick, so today’s SOTD is Body Paint. I love the opening, which has a crisp, almost biting, fresh green bell pepper note, with lemon and just enough pear to balance it without tipping into sweetness. An hour or so in warm spicy notes (chile pepper, clove) and some woody notes emerge and it morphs away from the crispness of the opening.

Tea today is Snowflake because I was in the mood for coconut.

Moon Carnival and Morning Chess are my favorites thus far. Beyond those two, To My Father is a really nice whiskey frag, and Poets of Berlin made me smell like a lemon blueberry muffin and I was into it 😀
