Monday scent of the day 4/3

Posted by Robin on 3 April 2023 113 Comments

It's Monday and Chocolate Mousse Day. Birthdays: Washington Irving, Doris Day, Jane Goodall, Eddie Murphy. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm giving Aedes de Venustas Corfu Kumquat a shot (although honestly I can't remember if I have already tried it). Jessica was right, if you don't like ambrox, don't bother.

Reminder: on 4/7, for Billie Holiday’s birthday, wear gardenia, or wear one of her favorite perfumes (Coty Emeraude and Bourjois Evening in Paris) or wear a fragrance inspired by her (Serge Lutens Une Voix Noire, Maria Candida Gentile Lady Day, Strange Invisible Perfumes Lady Day, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Don't Explain, to name a few).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

How do you like it? I thought the opening was beautiful and almost ordered a fb, but about 2 hours in all I got was ambroxan. Sadly a no go for me.

Not looking forward to all the hoopla in NYC the next few days. Barricades -news vans everywhere. Good grief. I will stop here.

Mr L and I started to watch The English with Emily Blunt last night, while we wait every Wednesday for Ted Lasso.

Today is the 50th Anniversary of the first cellular phone call. Just listening all about this now on NPR.

5th Avenue by PdB, since I will be on 5th avenue later today

I’m wearing Mediterraneo from a sample. This is my first time to wear it, but I really like it. I’m going to need a decant. When I read the notes, I thought that the lemon would overpower it, but it doesn’t at all.

In Profumum Roma Olibanum for my week of incense perfumes. Beautiful scent that I keep forgetting to wear. The citrusy opening followed by a very resinous drydown is very comforting.

    Happy Monday!

Etat Libre d’Orange Éloge du Traître. Very piney, and very like some other excellent pine-heavy scents I can think of like Krizia Uomo and Caron Yatagan, but still its own thing: it feels more modern than those two. I should wear this a lot more, especially now that spring is really here.

Pyramus, I need to plumb the depths of your fragrance knowledge. We had a friend over for dinner last night, and when we hugged hello I noticed that he smelled marvelous. I asked what it was and he said Polo. He said that’s all he’s worn for decades, so I’m going to assume that (a) he meant the original, and (b) he stocked up on it many years ago. Do you know whether it has suffered a horrible reformulation? I looked up the notes and want to try it myself, but not if it’s a mere shadow of its former self.

I never wore Polo back in the day — I was wearing mostly Grey Flannel and Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui at the time — but you have to assume that if you loved a scent and it’s still in production, it absolutely has been reformulated at some point, often repeatedly: the only scents that ever escape this fate are the ones that weren’t around long enough.

Here (https://www.fragrantica.com/board/viewtopic.php?id=187429) is a meandering look at the history of Polo reformulations: it’s possible that it went until 2003 without serious revision, but anything after that will have been reworked, and may or may not smell as you remember it.

This is why I’m usually so specific and detailed about what I’m wearing: if I tell you how great, say, YSL Yvresse is, and you go out and buy a bottle, it most definitely will not smell like what I have, and I know this because I’ve smelled a relatively recent reissue. It’s likely that if you buy that Polo, unless you hunt down a vintage bottle, it might smell great, but it won’t be what you’re smelling on your friend.

Well, the CP is a no-go for me — gardenia flowers are lovely to look at, but their scent gives me headaches. Luckily, I decided over the weekend to do a week of incense instead. Today’s selection is Bois d’Armenie. There’s something in it that reminds me of Encre Noire.

Cold and beautiful spring day here-wind blowing from the east and the air smells like cold clean sale air and ice. I smell like Jour de Fete, from LAP. It’s a gentle easy scent and every time I wear it I’m reminded of a Catherine Deneuve movie-Ma Saison Preferee. There’s one season where her ancient mother goes out to pick cherries from a tree in her yard to make a cake-you can see fields on wheat in the background. Awesome movie, and spraying this scent always reminds me of this scene, and always make me happy 🙂 Hope this week is easy and gentle for all of us-hey-a girl can dream 🙂

I think so. They’re not exactly subtle, but I really enjoy the style.

My favorites are Breath of God, Karma and Tank Battle.

The solid perfumes are a lot more toned down than the liquid and are a great price if you want to try one without committing a lot of money.

Today I’m wearing the only scent I think I have with gardenia: Narciso White Cube. Haven’t worn it in a while, and it’s a good, comforting friend.

I may have to plumb the depths of my vat of Tauer samples to see if I ever got a sample of Sotto la luna: Gardenia. (I have so…many…Tauer samples.)

I’m sampling Vilhelm’s Smoke Show today and I’ll take a half point because it doesn’t have gardenia, but the brand cites jazz generally and Billie Holiday specifically as the inspiration. I get pink pepper, saffron, lemon oil, a sprightly oud, and vetiver. This is one where a 10ml decant would be the right amount at the right price point for me.

My auntie duties have shifted to the weekends, so I am free to spritz myself at hajusuuri levels during the week and I plan to! I left just a smidge in this sample bottle for future reference. 🙂

Tea today is Fortnum & Mason’s Fortmason; the only tea I’ve ever tried with an orange blossom aroma. A bit like jasmine tea, but it is a black tea (and works well with milk).

I am awaiting some perfume deliveries today, so I am leaving one arm perfume-less.

On the other arm, I have on Chanel No. 5 EDT. I am surprised at how much I like this over other formulations. It has been described as the woodier or drier version of No. 5 but I haven’t sniffed the EDP or parfum in a long time so my memory fails. I don’t remember ever enjoying No. 5 as much though. Perhaps the EDT has something that I just enjoy more, or perhaps my tastes have changed over time.

    Happy Monday all!

It happens! I like Mitsouko EDT much, much better than any of the EDP or parfum versions I have ever smelled: it has a ferocious, untamed quality that the others have smoothed over.

And it certainly is possible that your tastes have changed. I like things now that I *hated* way back when, and I’m discovering that some things that I loved no longer appeal to me in the way that they used to. (I wore Knize Ten the other day, and I felt very meh about it, to the point that I couldn’t remember what I had ever seen in it: no idea what’s going on there.)

Now you got me thinking that I’ll have to try the EDT for Mitsouko (I only have the parfum). Is yours contemporary for vintage?

The changing of tastes makes a lot of sense — I have fallen out of love with several of my perfumes from years ago but can’t bring myself to take them out of my collection. What will you be doing with your Knize Ten? I try to curate my collection to perfumes that I truly love only, but I also like keeping them for scent memories. Feels like a waste to have something around that I don’t wear though!

Our clocks went back an hour at the weekend and so now the dogs are ready for action around 3.45am ( instead of 4.45am). They don’t let up with their restless activity until I feed them….then it’s straight back to sleep for them, not for me. Never mind. The stars make it worth it, and I love the deep-night quiet during early mornings. The only noise is the car that comes down the road to throw a newspaper for the neighbour. When they open their window to toss the paper I can hear their radio for a few seconds. Wearing CDG Daphne. New bottle, and I think it is the same as old Daphne ( from memory). It’s golden, and cheerful.

Sun is out, for how long no one knows. Very late in getting my taxes done this year, but glad to finally get it done today and then I promptly forget about it until next year.

Rolled around in bed this morning, toying with the idea of just staying there because it was cold and rainy and we were warm and cozy. Doggo was quite happy to loll about with me, enjoying the non-stop belly rubs and ear scritches, but I knew she needed to potty. Ultimately, this is what got me out of the bed. And the promise of hot hot hot coffee..! ☕️

Continuing on the coffee theme with CSP Vanille Café today. No gardenias in sight…Donatella is shunning me and I’m fine with that. I am envious of some of the perfume math I read over in that post. Amazing, stunning, and all around ingenious!

Yes, I just can’t pay what coffee shops want for a cup of coffee. Such an incredible rip off. I like a piping hot pour over first thing. As for the new assignment, ugh. I’m so done. If I were younger and good looking I would consider being a VEP but sadly I’m old and ugly. 😂

A sunny day but only around 10C.

It was a rosy kind of day, Molton Brown Rosa Absolute EDT doing it’s POAL impersonation and I wear it more than the original even though I have four decants because two were sent in error. Tonight it’s VC&A Rose Rouge which I find a little too sweet this time around.

Glad I completed the Donatella survey. I will stay on a low-buy next quarter.

Very interested to hear a trusty NST’er mention a scent that is like POAL – thanks! And yes, Donatella is faithful in making me think about last quarter. She is very business-savvy!

Rosa Absolute is a little gem, less complex of course than POAL but good longevity and not boring, I think Molton Brown is underated, I love their Ylang-Ylang too, and Intoxicating Davana Blossom.

A slow start for me today. It seems that I alternate between high energy and low energy days lately. So if I have a marvelously productive day, the next day will be low key. It is what it is.

SOTD = still eking out the Aqua Allegoria Rosa Rossa! But it is spitting and sputtering when I use it now.

Is that a bottle being emptied? 😳

I just wonder what happened to my “get up and go” some days.

The impending thunk is for a sample. I think the last time I emptied a bottle was sometime in the mid 2000’s.

Wait, that’s not true. I did transfer the contents of a 15mL bottle from SSS into a couple of travel sprays last year, since the sprayer quit working on it. Does that count? 🤔

          Counts!!! 15 ml is 🎉!
I buy too much to thunk bottles, but its nice not to miss them.

Its ok to give yourself the time to not have to do anything. Think of all of the good you do for so many. Teflon loves extra time with you.
When the energy strikes, grab it.
          💜

Hello rose twin🌹Sorry to hear you have low-energy days, don’t be hard on yourself though, in spring I take vitamin C for 2 months, it is a great booster, I find.

I was not inspired this morning, so the CP was very helpful. I enjoyed 6 sprays of VC&A Gardenia Petale throughout the work day.

I love gardenia (very nostalgic and *intoxicating* for me) and will be rummaging through samples and for some of my favorite FB’s this week! Commando most of a beautiful day that inspired me to “open” the porch, put out the bird bath, and work on last of the Winter clean-up. Two leaf bags full so far, and the city will resume yard waste pick-up next week. You guys: I finally got around to Angel Muse edt from a lovely Ebay seller, and it was love at first sniff. Thank you everyone here who mentioned it over the years. I have met my match in terms of a one-spray wonder. But I will of course push the envelope at home. 😀

SOTD = Chanel 31 Rue Cambon EDT

Yep, the discontinued one and I am not in danger of running out because BUB which was the original one I owned.

    In other news:
    – I saw a former co-worker of mine at Wegmans. I almost never navigate my way back in the direction I went and there must have been some kind of supernatural thing going on! We were in the same team when we were in our 20s and look where we are. He is also still in the same company.
    – What were the chances of me being called for jury duty? 100%. Does anyone care to guess when this jury duty is scheduled? Take a really really wild guess 🤔 – I will be on my cruise. Now I have to figure out how to get an excuse which also means I don’t think I will be excused the next time I’m called. Oy vey!

And since I did not post my SOTD yesterday, here’s my treat:

I’ve got that, too! I bet you smell fantastic! I used to smell delightful in it, but not now. One more winter and if not, I know who to send it to. 😊

Sorry about the jury duty. Can’t you tell them now? Ask for jury duty earlier?
