Very Dior-like

Posted by Robin on 3 August 2022 Leave a Comment

They take on the idea of tradition versus modernity, which is very Dior-like. In each perfume, a flower is a key ingredient. You have the Iris in Bois D’Argent, the lavender in Eau Noire, and the orange blossom in Eau Blanche. All these flowers are classic ones from the 18th century and were used by royalty. Kim Jones’ show “Jardin” capsule is also about flowers, so a relationship to the garden is very important. It’s a joy in the house of flowers, even for men and women.

Issue 13 of Nez is out (160 pages, $29), as are two more ingredient issues, Cinnamon (not shown) and Immortelle: "Native to the Mediterranean Basin, immortelle is grown in the Balkans for perfumery. It owes its name to its tiny golden-yellow flowers, which never fade. Their dark, spicy, boozy scent conjures curry, sandy dunes or the Corsican maquis. Explore the many facets of this wildflower by journeying through botany, history, mixology, agriculture and chemistry without overlooking, of course, perfumes and perfumers." 96 pages, $25 at Luckyscent.

Inaccurate at best, ageist at worst

Posted by Robin on 2 August 2022 12 Comments

Calling a classic fragrance an “Old Lady Perfume” has become such an accepted part of the modern beauty vernacular that it feels like a harmless, even humorous, descriptor. But is it either of those? (Spoiler: not really.)

The term is inaccurate at best, ageist at worst. We hear it from sales associates, assuring us that we don’t want that older fragrance because it’s too powdery, too strong, or too much … something. We read it in editorials telling us about the latest perfume launches, usually as a caveat along the lines of, “Don’t worry, though, this new perfume isn’t like that.”
