“It’s part of the meaning,” says Christine Nagel, in-house perfumer at Hermès, of a bottle’s design. “For me, with scent, there is always meaning.” The two elements aligning is imperative; when they don’t, “it’s horrible”, she says. “It’s like… your great aunt knitting a terrible outfit for your lovely little baby, and you have to dress her up in it to keep everyone happy.”

Le Galion Ferveur & Eau Noble ~ new fragrances

The (almost) daily lemming

Otherland has two candle collections out for the holidays: Adorned and Gilded. From the Adorned set ("inspired by the downtown discothèque, where the silhouettes shimmer with soul, diamonds duet to disco, and glitzy golds galavant with glee....a celebration of a winter wonderland in the grooviest of ways"), Dessert First, with notes of gingersnap, black cardamom and milky tea. $36 for 277g at Otherland. (A number of these collections are reissues.
