Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, late November 2022

Posted by Robin on 19 November 2022 231 Comments

It's almost Thanksgiving (I hope your house is cleaner than mine) and we're celebrating the calm before the holiday festivities with our usual open thread poll.  Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, any travel (or perfume shopping?) plans you might have this week, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Today’s photo is very pretty — almost makes me want to grow sage, despite the fact that it is what I blame for making stuffing (and some perfumes) unpalatable to me. 🦃 Anyway, I’m fighting off a terrible headache with Tam Dao EDT, aspirin and coffee, and working on a baby blanket I’m crocheting for a dear niece. She chose woodland scenes for her baby room decorations so the yarn I’m using is a gorgeous pale sage green.

Thanks! The blanket is turning out very nicely so far, and it’s especially nice not to have to work with “baby colors”. 😝

Oh no, hope it gets better today!

I don’t really know if that is culinary sage. I’ve grown culinary sage before, though, and it was not ugly but not gorgeous either.

After I posted, I realized that I have some Russian sage (definitely non-culinary) growing in the yard, and it looks similar to today’s photo. I like it as a substitute for the English lavender that was getting a bit ragged out there.

Yeah, that could be. When we are growing herbs we keep the flowers clipped as much as possible so I just don’t know for sure.

I didn’t wear anything with pepper all week (I had a theme and by god I was going to stick to it) but I’m making up for it today with Caron Coup de Fouet, all peppery-clovey carnation goodness.

I’m not fragrance shopping in the foreseeable future but we got a sewing machine a couple of months ago and all of a sudden out of nowhere I am OBSESSED with quilts and I just got back from the local quilt store (staffed by incredibly nice and encouraging people) with $100 worth of fabric. I’m doomed. (It is extraordinarily nice fabric — Northcott Toscana in eight textury shades of blue and green and purple plus white, if you want to look it up).

And what fun, and yes, it’s like beading or knitting…it’s a collector’s craft.

I’ve been knitting for almost 40 years and I know what you mean about a collector’s craft — the yarn and the needles I’ve amassed…. I have to assume this will be more of the same, which is why I’m doomed. There’s *so much* fabric out there.

My mom was a big time quilter back in the day. She had a handmade quilting frame made and spent years hand quilting. She had a largish closet in her sewing room had floor to ceiling shelves. Every single shelf was packed tight with fabric. Really, I can’t even express how much fabric was in that closet. If it had ever caught fire it would have burned for weeks…😬

I was a beader for many years. Luckily beads don’t take up as much room as fabric, but bet the cost is about the same.

A quiet Thanksgiving this year – just the BF and me – because the following day I leave to visit my folks in Florida. I’ve got the bread, butter, sage, and onion ready to make stuffing ahead of time today. I think I’ll do the cranberries, too. Then all I have to do Thursday is put the breast in the oven. Easy peasy.

Watching a foot of lake effect come down today. The southern suburbs got shellacked yesterday; now it’s our turn. I think I’ll stick with Rose Poivree.

Going to Texas to my brother’s for Thanksgiving. It’s becoming kind of a tradition in our family and takes a lot of work and stress off my mother. My sister-in-law is a great hostess. No SOTD yet. My package from Guerlain arrived this week, but MINUS the back-up bottle of Shalimar Millesime Tonka! The package wasn’t taped shut, just secured with a large tab like a cereal box. When I opened it, the inner wrapper had obviously been torn open and the perfume removed and box re-closed. The packing slip and free samples were still in the box. I called Guerlain, and they are not going to get any more Millesime Tonka in the U.S. (the rep had just been told). So I am waiting for the (obvious) refund response, a claim having been opened for me. Not a satisfactory transaction so far, since an immediate refund should have been offered, Guerlain having failed to properly secure the box. I’m really glad to already have a bottle (thank you, H!!). But really disappointed how Guerlain has handled both this situation and the distribution of highly covetable limited edition flankers in general.

This once happened to me with a package from Nordstrom. The first rep also gave me an unsatisfactory answer about an investigation and a claim, but when I called back a few days later, another rep told me it should have been refunded immediately (which it then was). This is just to say—keep on them if nothing happens!

Lyric today. Still love this gorgeous spicy, woodsy rose.

We thought we weren’t having any kids at holidays this year 🙁 (although later found that 1 of 3 sons and his wife will come for Thanksgiving) so we invited friends from Colorado whose son is also busy and they accepted. Very excited to see them! Long story short, today is “getting ready day” — a little vacuuming and dusting, making the guest bed, planning meals, etc.

Met a friend for coffee this am. Took me more time to put on parka, hat, ice cleats than it did to actually walk there. Peppermint vanilla latte. Yum. No beignets today, though. I managed to refrain.

Shalimar MVP – one spritz, but I will add more.

We will head to friends’ for Thanksgiving, so easy for us. We bring mashed potatoes and roasted Brussels sprouts. Our town has festivities all weekend after that, so will go to our tree lighting, and I’m hoping to convince the husband to hit the barn dance.

SOTD is Zoologist Bee. I really enjoy this in the cooler season and it lasts forever. I don’t know if it is something I would wear going out though as I wonder what other’s think of it. My husband has trouble smelling so it does no good to ask him. Some have compared it to the smell of cat pee, but I don’t detect that on my skin.

Off to my sister-in-law’s for Thanksgiving. I like to do all the cooking, but since my parents are gone, I don’t get the chance to do that much anymore. Oh, well I am bringing pumpkin bars and a relish tray for my contribution.

Good morning! Happy Saturday to all. I’m in Shalimar Tonka, thanks to hajusuuri’s split. I wasn’t sure I liked this when I wore it yesterday, but it’s growing on my today. That didn’t take long. 😂

It’s cold and rainy outside and I’m curled up with the canine snugglebump and a mug of tea. Made oatmeal this morning and then a small pot of spaghetti sauce for today and tomorrow. My freezer is so full that I couldn’t make a big pot of it cuz I’d have no place to put it! I’m not complaining, just amused at myself. 🍝

    Hello all!

Had an adventurous Friday, going sailing in a cold day in the Gulf with a coworker. I had so much fun and can’t wait to go again soon. Might even go to sailing school after the holidays….

I had a hard time picking a perfume for today since I’m dead tired, but I ended up with Ambre Narguile–just a bit! I hated this one for a long time but after having smelled about a million boring ambers, I’ve come to appreciate its surprising tartness. It has lovely balance with the right application.

    Have a great weekend all!

    SOTD = SJP Stash

Happens to have pepper and the bottle is gorgeous. It’s also discontinued but keep looking because they sometimes appear unexpectedly at Marshall’s and similar stores. It’s another one where I ask myself why don’t I wear it more?

    https://www.instagram.com/p/ClJxo-EOYC4/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

We were originally going to Seasons52 for Thanksgiving but had a last minute invitation from an aunt and that’s where we’re going. I’ll probably bring 2 bottles of wine, i.e., not anything I can bring home if not opened or partly eaten.

I just realized I have 2 more vacation days I need to schedule. Besides the last 2 weeks of December, I am taking off all Mondays starting November 28 and then Fridays the 9th and the 16th. I will likely be zooming in for some meetings but I like the freedom of not being tied down to a schedule (other than the meetings).

I love Stash too, much to my surprise because its notes list wouldn’t normally appeal to me. Portia of Australian Perfume Junkies had the very best idea for using the oil that comes in some of the sets: use it in one’s bath! One dropperful is enough to make the whole bathroom smell marvelous.

Your vacation day schedule sounds terrific. I go back to my job on 12/14 after an extended leave, but it should be very quiet then, and the office will be closed between Christmas and New Year’s, so it will be a gradual transition back.

I’m testing ELdO’s Frustration this morning, it’s got a bit too much vanilla for me, but it might be just the thing for a vanilla fan.

In TDC Bois d’Iris today, which is what I chose for yesterday’s memorial service. There was a second service this morning for the same person, but with a (mostly) different group of people. Thank you to everyone for the kind words and good wishes yesterday.

It sounds like others have had ups and downs in Thanksgiving planning this year, just as we have. Our usual guest is unable to come this year, but I had already ordered and put a deposit down on a small farm turkey when friends in the neighborhood invited us to join them for dinner. We’ve compromised and will join them for dessert and drinks in the evening, especially fun since their kids and partners will be home. I will be making pecan pie, cherry pie, and for our own dinner, corn pudding. Mr. Skal will cook everything else. He is out of town this weekend on his last work trip of the fall, and I hope he doesn’t get delayed by snow on the way back! Hope everyone on the list who is in or near Buffalo stays safe in the snow.

Messe de Minuit for a cold day, high 33F. Full disclosure, I am breaking out the heavy sweaters, which always seem to pick up a borderline sour-wood smell in storage. My drawer isn’t lined in cedar and had a lavender sachet but the clean sweaters need a little airing that I did not have time for. MdM powered me through.

    Happy weekend everyone!
We had our year-end function yesterday,it was a murder-mystery themed affair.Although great fun,I left shortly after the main dish was served.I cannot do big gatherings any more,it truly sucks the life out of me to have to make forced smalltalk. But it was also a celebration of my 15 years at the hospital,so yay for that.
    SOTD!
Guerlain L’Instant. This is such a weirdly wonderful perfume,I don’t wear it too often because of my love/hate relationship with it.Truly a perfect mood/day/weather fragrance, but today it worked in the hot humidity
Still cannot decide if I’m happy/sad/bored/depressed/excited though, mental health has been a ride these past few weeks!
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I’ve never really understood the point of small talk. Objectively, I guess I get it, but really….why?? I too much prefer small gatherings where I know everyone versus a big party.
A therapist once advised me not to compare my insides with other peoples outsides, and I’ve carried that with me. Folks can be happy and smiley, but you never know what’s going on under the surface. Peace and hugs to you, J B! ✌🏻🤗

Congrats on those 15 years! I hope they appreciate what a gem they have in you! I think it’s nice that you to even turned up for that shindig. I don’t think I would have had it in me. Nope, I KNOW I wouldn’t have had it in me!

Mental health is definitely a roller coaster for me, too. I’m swinging from Very Irritable and Impatient to down right Snarlish with people at work who keep talking in my ear even though I give them ZERO encouragement. 🤬 Just go AWAY! Whew! 😅 I think a lot of people who put their head down and pushed like an ox through the last 2-3 years, especially in healthcare and other “essential” business areas, are just now getting back to normal and realizing they still have a lot to process. I’m just trying to acknowledge it, watch it, and not let those moods dictate my behavior. But honestly, the constant yapping in my ear last night almost made me lose it. I ended up moving my to another area of the unit. Did I mention I was irritable? 😂

I had a lovely time yesterday at Fumerie and met Calypso. She and some of the other conference attendees (they are philosophers) descended on Mike, our perfume host. In short order the counter was covered with bottles and smelling strips. I loved Meo Fusciuni Luce and bought a bottle, but might go back and get Quartana Wolfsbane, it was so interesting with a truffle note.
Thanksgiving for one isn’t really a thing and I don’t care for turkey, so I will make something special and buy a fancy dessert from the bakery.

This morning I woke up after an interrupted night’s sleep (Dapper the cat attacked my feet) and put on Chypre Mousse.

Currently recuperating from a relatively mild case of COVID — the first time I’ve had it! Luckily I am triple-boosted, which I think is helping me a lot. I’m still taking anti-viral med though, which is advised to speed recovery and lower risk of “long COVID.” My daughters have it this week too, which is how I caught it; we had a family dinner on Sunday night.

Since I’m confining myself to one part of the house, hoping not to infect my husband, I will probably spend this weekend reorganizing my perfumes, which will also make me very happy! I might venture out to the garden for a bit, as it’s not too cold today and I still (always!) have plants and bulbs to get in the ground. And then there’s the planning for Thanksgiving dinner, which I also enjoy. Have a great weekend, everyone!

I’m in Cuir D’Ange today. It’s definitely a cooler weather perfume for me, and it has definitely cooled down here! I just bought new slippers lined with fleece and my feet are soooo happy.

I’ll be alone on Thanksgiving, so no major plans. I think I’ll make something not associated with the holiday meal because I don’t want to bum myself out. My current thought is duplicating the vegan mac and cheese (and peas) they used to serve at the Triple Rock Social Club. I loved that dish! (And that bar.)

Sorry you will be alone sistine, I hope you cook yourself something fantastic!

I’m in OJ Tolu. Close to thunking (autocorrect REALLy wants that to be thinking) another sample.
Not traveling for thanksgiving and it will be just the 5 of us since my parents are in Florida. That’s okay, it suits me just fine. I like a quiet holiday. I’m sure it sounds quite boring to people who grew up in a large family, but when I hear colleagues talk about hosting a thanksgiving for 15,20 or 25 people, I can feel myself starting to break out in a cold sweat.😰 I get pvc’s just thinking about it, lol.

Anyway, in the spirit of giving thanks, I’ve got a traveling box of samples looking for a new home. They came to me from the lovely Nancyleandros and I believe they went to her from another lovely NSTer. I’ve taken a few, added a few, and now I’m ready to pass it on. Thankful for this giving community.☺️ Call dibs here and email me: p k wisdom(one word) and the yahooland.

First day off in a while. I slept so well, feel like a new person today, which is fortunate since I have lots of household chores waiting for me.

I got my 5th COVID shot/3rd booster, since infectious disease specialists think the new bivalent vaccine really is better. I got so sick with the booster I took in June, hope I don’t have repeat of that. I am trying Moderna after 4 Pfizer. The actual injection was not painful at all so fingers crossed tomorrow I still feel ok.

I am wearing a sample of Rook, Undergrowth. Mint is the first note listed but I get a very smooth patchouli. It is growing on me. Dry down is mellow and comforting. It is a chilly, rainy day and I am trying to decide if I dare take a walk. I need the exercise.

I will be solo for Thanksgiving this year. Mr. Jalapeno will still be in Florida with his stepmom. Some friends of mine have invited me over for Friendsgiving on Black Friday, and said that the only thing I need to bring is my appetite.

I still am planning to bring some potent potables.

SOTD = Agent Provocateur Eau Provocateur EdT. This is a lighter, orange blossom based take on the OG Agent Provocateur. Finally opened my bottle of this one.

Late to the party but just waking up and trying gird my loins for another night. Wore Roja’s Enslaved to bed and still smelling so delicious! 🥰 I will up the ante before heading into work. Pretty sure I can’t afford a FB of this, but I can dream…It reminds me of something, maybe or maybe not another perfume, but it does jingle the memory bell in my brain .

Stuffed after a big brunch of mushroom, turkey bacon, and cheese scrambled egg beaters. ($8 for 32 oz!!) Made a bit too much and had to share and doggo wasn’t mad about that. 🐕

Sadly, “the season” is definitely over here at our local TJ’s. Not even any pumpkin oat milk available anymore. I have one quart left and will have to dole it out by the spoonful to make it last as long as possible.

Hope everyone is enjoying this last weekend before the chaos officially kicks off! 🎉🎊🎁🎄🎅

The weatherman said 22 inches of snow has fallen in the past 3 days here. The warning ends tomorrow morning. I have today off, and have only managed a load of laundry and sloppy Joe’s for dinner. ( from a can, nothing fancy)
Yesterday I bought a teeny tiny ham for Thanksgiving. It cost $19 dollars. A turkey would have been less money but more stress. I might go out to my sisters later Thanksgiving day but that will depend on the weather and the roads.
My sotd is Shalimar edp to warm myself up.

Shalimar MVP again today for early church, then breakfast and a stroll through the lovely local home store downtown. It’s filled with all their winter and holiday items. Will be getting up into the closet to pull down our pillows, etc. that we got there last year.

Brrr, it was cold today. I broke out the big guns – parka, wool scarf and cap. Deer have showed up in the back…there’s a small family that have distinctive black markings on their ears and tails. Just lovely.

SOTD = Tom Ford Amber Absolute

    https://www.instagram.com/p/ClMdchnuDTH/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Off to Wegmans in a few minutes. I normally do it as part of my grocery store runs on Saturdays but got lazy yesterday when I only stopped at Whole Foods.

Speaking of Whole Foods, remember the fiasco about not being given the Prime discount despite the fact that my Amex is tied to my Prime account? Well, yesterday, I asked the cashier to check the pricing on 3 items of clothing and I ended up buying one because it was indeed on sale for 40% off whereas the other 2 were not. The cashier clearly knew I was not taking them and set them aside next to her register. When I thought I was done, I looked at my receipt and saw that she charged me for the clothing I did not want to buy. Ugh! It was another stop at Customer Service. No issues with the refund but why did I have to waste my time dealing with service that is sub-par? This was the 3rd time in a month that I had to stop at Customer Service to resolve an issue. I have half a mind to present Whole Foods with a bill for MY time…I may just do it to see what reaction I get. Also, for what it’s worth, the cashier I do not like was blocking the aisle. I figured out quite quickly that she was counting the items in someone’s cart and had to do it over (the counting). Why? Because she kept getting distracted by wanting to count before she was checking out all the items for fear that someone will steal! I know it happens but if it makes you inefficient, just stop it. It wasn’t her choice to make every customer play the grocery bagger role so I say they should have other workers policing the checkout lines rather than the cashier having to fear for her job!

I haven’t been to the Whole Foods in my area for months. It’s a pain to get to as it is (and a special trip out of the way), and I have noticed that the service went downhill after Amazon bought them. Just not worth the aggro.

It is also clear that the staff are WAY more unhappy. I often hear them complaining to each other in the aisles, that never used to happen.
