Tuesday scent of the day 11/8

Posted by Robin on 8 November 2022 92 Comments

It's Tuesday, National STEM Day and National Cappuccino Day. (Also Election Day in the US. Do vote, but don't talk about politics here.) Birthdays: Bram Stoker, Minnie Riperton, Bonnie Raitt, Kazuo Ishiguro, Rickie Lee Jones. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in 4160Tuesdays Sunshine And Pancakes. Tea is Tali’s Masala Chai by Art of Tea mixed with Upton Colombian Organic Breakfast blend.

Reminder: on 11/11, wear something simple and comforting. Suggested by Cobrarose.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Tory Burch Lettuce Ware porcelain teapot ("created in collaboration with iconic potter Dodie Thayer") is €250.

I’m in Shay & Blue Blood Oranges. The first time I wore this, it smelled like what a custom-made shoe must feel like: just perfect for me. I love it from start to finish.

Drinking Rishi Masala Chai tea today, with Stash decaf Chai Spice in the brew also. The Rishi has a touch of pepper in it, which I don’t often find in chai tea bags. Me likey. 🙂

I grabbed my Old Spice body wash in the shower today, but I didn’t want to wear Old Spice again after wearing it on the weekend. I grabbed Safran Troublant instead, which certainly works. Love it, and I have a big bottle.

Comfortable but not simple, Musc Ravageur today. Love it, and I thunked my travel spray a while back so my samples from CobraRose came at the right time. I’m wearing it on top of last night’s L de Lolita Lempicka dregs, iirc at one time L was considered to have a close resemblance to Musc Rav. I don’t get the resemblance but they smell great together.

I’m wearing HG Slowdive today, which I find comforting. Of course vanillas are big on the comfort factor and those will get lots of use this week too. Getting a bit of rain, so cozied up inside with the dog and a big bowl of black breakfast tea with milk.

Eclipse watched (nap now needed). Votes cast. Feeling comfortable in vintage Dune edt. It is nuanced but I’m claiming CP points because I simply love it. Lots of goodies from splitmeet yet to try, though so I may have to get out of my comfort zone some this week.

CBNS twins with ringthing this morning in OJ Woman. It is definitely comforting but not at all simple. We have sunshine and below-40F temps out right now, and I’m going to have to bundle up in a bit and go out there to show an arborist a couple of our trees that need some expert attention.

Wearing Lush Turmeric Latte for comfort.

It snowed last night, which is pretty this morning, but…it’s awfully early for snow. Also it caught my strata by surprise and we don’t have any snow melt to put out. Have to go get some today, I guess, though the snow will likely be gone by then.

I am sampling Strangers Parfumerie Chokedee. Been craving the scent of Southeast Asia lately. Chokedee opens with a convincing take on banana peel (love) and pandan (LOVE!!) but these are short-lived as white florals and sweet glutinous rice take over. Overall a very yummy scent that reminds me of home.

I’ve noticed that pandan is very trendy in NYC restaurants lately — lots of pandan-flavored sweets and baked goods are popping up, usually by Vietnamese, Thai and Malaysian restaurants.

I grew up with spiky pandan plants abundant in our gardens and food. It smells different when fresh vs dried vs cooked — I have yet to find a convincing take on fresh pandan leaves in perfumery. Most smell closer to dried/cooked pandan for a more foody association.

Fresh pandan reminds me of food and gardens, but funnily enough dried pandan actually reminds me of car rides with friends and family. Pandan leaves are sometimes left in cars as pest deterrents (unsure how effective it is, but lots of people do it). In the hot tropical sun, they warm and dry quickly and perfume the insides.

Oh wow that’s super interesting! Pandan goes really well with rice as is frequently used to add fragrance in rice dishes, but I have yet to make the connection to baked bread. I will have to pay more attention to that!

Did my early voting yesterday and happy I got it out of the way. In Clinique Happy today. It’s such a pain trying to schedule a spay for myone dog. Vets either want $800 or the low cost ones are full up until March of next year. Just a couple more vets to call.

I don’t know why vets feel the need to charge so much for a spay. If you watch any vet shows, a few of the vets don’t understand why a simple spay/neuter has to be so expensive. I know vets need to make money, but sheesh.

Had the most magical night I can remember. We were so lucky as there was not a cloud in the sky ( literally) and not a breath of wind and so I dragged the sleeping bags outside and got the binoculars and sat on the deck and watched the earth’s shadow creep across the moon, starting in the lower right corner. By 11.20 the moon was completely obscured and a dull orange . But it was the rest of the sky that was amazing: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus was like a tiny blue star beside the moon, and down low near the horizon glittering like ice was Pleiades ( Matariki)…sparkling, incredible. There was a ruru ( native owl) in the tree and as the eclipse happened some pagans/ moon worshippers (?) down in the valley started beating drums. It was the perfect night .

I was up and outside walking my dog at the right time but didn’t see the eclipse because I couldn’t find the moon! I hadn’t realized just how tall the trees are in out neighborhood until this morning. The stars were absolutely gorgeous, however.

Comforting but not really simple in Papillon Bengale Rouge.

Beautiful clear sky when I went to bed but cloud cover was expected. Woke up at 3:50 and could tell from our bare windows that the moon was shrouded. So, I turned off my alarm. I ended up walking up again at the perfect time, so slipped on a sweater and went outside. Wandered around and never found the moon, so back into a nice, warm bed for me. Bummer.

First time voting in our small town. I was #74 at about 10:30 am. The poll officials were friends of ours, and a colleague from work and her sister were right ahead of me. Efficient also, because the post office is next door and Tom, the postal clerk, offered us each a banana. Reminded me of the first time I voted, up in our neighbor’s, the McCords, garage.

Thick clouds last night so I missed seeing the eclipse. Today is sunny and rather cold and I am wearing Golestan, it arrived yesterday. On first sniff, my thought was “Celery!” but that went away quite quickly. Now I smell flowers, a little of that Tauer jasmine, and something in the base that I don’t quite like. I am happy to have sniffed it but won’t need more than my 5ml.

Inspired by PriscillaE, I’m in Safran Troublant from my big bottle. I don’t seem to have made a dent in it so far. It’s like the ever replenishing bottle of perfume, it just keeps going and going and going….

Finished coffee already, but now firing up the stove for some TJ’s pumpkin spice tea with a splash of pumpkin oat milk. It’s cold and windy, but at least the sun is shining today.

Went looking for pumpkin brioche and pumpkin cream cheese first thing yesterday morning but nope, no go. The guy stocking the shelves once again told me “The seasons OVER!” What a disgruntled holiday maker he is! Glad I don’t have him in my family. Can you imagine having this guy over for Christmas? You hand him his gift and he snarls, “The season’s OVER!” Yikes. I’d snatch the gift right back and pass it to someone else. What an old curmudgeon! I once gifted a friend with homemade biscotti, almond dipped in chocolate no less. A bit labor intensive, and her only reply was, “I don’t really like biscotti, but thanks.” Yep, that’s the last time she got a gift from me! Hope everyone else has better luck with their gift giving this year! 😀

You really made me LOL, Deva! That guy easily kills anybody’s holiday spirit. I am sure you will still get the pumpkin brioche and cream cheese. At least, at my local TJ’s there are still plenty of them. But I noticed that some Christmas stuff is already on the shelves, when I went there this past weekend. I hope they don’t get rid of pumpkin products before Thanksgiving is over! This year everything seems to be in a serious rush. Last year, most of Valentine’s day stuff were out in December. So annoying!

It just doesn’t make sense for the season to be over. I looked again today but no go. I’ll keep checking off and on throughout the week. It’s way too early for Christmas stuff. And to the point, the beginning of the Christmas season is not the end of pumpkin season as far as I’m concerned. I did score a couple more cartons of their pumpkin oat milk, so it wasn’t a total loss!

A bit tired after waking up early to admire a spectacular and clear night sky – Orion, Jupiter, and of course the lunar drama. A few minutes after the eclipse was full, the clouds rolled in and that red moon entirely disappeared from the sky!

Sorry about your weather. I love Fils de Joie. To me it’s a musky jasmine ( dusty jasmine floral ) encapsulated in clear honey ( almost amber honey). The dry down is beautiful, lasts a long time. Stains your white t shirts red if you spray on your neck ( downside) . It makes me think of a honey/ jasmine version of Fille de Berlin if that helps.

No, my husband’s insomnia had us both awake for an hour in the middle of the night — and thus unable to drag ourselves out of bed at the right time.

Also meant to say earlier — what impressive sets of pipes among today’s birthday folks (Riperton, Raitt, Jones). Maybe if I’d been born on this date, I’d be able to carry a tube, at least.

No eclipse viewing here, definitely our loss. SOTD is Iris Malikhan, which is comforting and, when dabbed on, fairly simple to my nose. I have a wonky spray top, so will have to do some fiddling to be able to compare application modes. Wore Memo Winter Palace yesterday — another entry for the “comforting-but-complex” category.

I found myself awake briefly around 5am this morning, so I decided to pop outside and have a peek at the lunar eclipse. Almost all of the moon was a reddish-black color except for a tiny dot of silver. That was good enough for me, so I went back indoors and went back to sleep.

I voted earlier this afternoon and was thanked by at least 3 of the poll workers. The inner voice was thinking “Wait a minute, we should be thanking the poll workers. Not the other way around. That’s bass-ackwards.” Hope that isn’t violating the posting guidelines Robin.

SOTD = still in No. 5 L’Eau EdT. Might need to find something heavier, since I consider this a warmer-weather lovely.

Today I wore Alien. Pretty simple and comforting to me.
Some work drama tonight- a thief was taking a full unpaid shopping cart out the door when a customer with a dog decided to chase the thief! The thief abandoned the stolen merchandise and took off in his car. So thankful nobody was hurt.

Oy! So brazen and to think that hundreds of these instances are just let go on a daily basis!

      That’s insane!

Bet the thief was afraid of the dog.

I would have died laughing, especially if the customer had a schutzhund trained doggo! Glad no one was hurt, of course, including doggo.

I immediately thought of you and T-rex! I don’t know what breed this dog was but he was definitely intimidating. The owner was super nice too.

SOTD = Francesca Bianchi Sticky Fingers

Such a nice fragrance! I dislike most of hers because they just smell skanky and I don’t like skanky.

In other news, a couple missed their airport stop yesterday. Why? They were each busy yakking it up on their cell phone. I have no sympathy.

Missing your stop b/c you were messing around on your cell phone = play a stupid game, get a stupid prize.

Sounds strange but I accidentally created a Sticky Fingers dupe when I sprayed O, Unknown! over Profumum Roma Patchouly. It’s lovely.
