Friday scent of the day 10/28

Posted by Robin on 28 October 2022 119 Comments

It's Friday! Also, International Animation Day. Birthdays today: Erasmus, Levi Coffin, Auguste Escoffier, Edith Head, Evelyn Waugh, Jonas Salk. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with geranium leaf, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm finishing off geranium week in Tauer Phi — Une Rose de Kandahar.

Reminder: 11/4 is National Candy Day. Wear a fragrance inspired by candy, or wear Prada Candy or any other fragrance named for a candy of any kind, or forget the gourmands but wear a fragrance with at least one note that recalls a flavor in one of your favorite candies.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I have been playing along the last few months, but I have rarely had the time to post timely reports.
Today, I am in Lubin’s Itasca, a fougere named for the lake that is the source for the Mississippi. Like all fougeres, it has geranium.

No community points for me because 1) I don’t have a single thing with geranium leaf in it that I know of and anyway 2) I’m on the road — first time out of the city in almost three years! — so my choices are limited. I’m in a little bit of Mugler A *Men Pure Coffee, which is never the wrong choice as far as I’m concerned.

Geranium leaf was not my jam this morning…the only one I could remember in my collection is Geranium Pour Monsieur, and that was too chipper for my vibe this morning…so I went with Noir Epices. It’s has geranium, so partial credit? It is perfectly spicy and warm on a gloomy day. Be well.

I’m not sure if geranium and geranium leaf are the same note, but I’m wearing Une Rose and that does have geranium in it. If my Covet had arrived, I would have worn that as it does have geranium leaf.

I’m going with Terre d’Hermes today for geranium leaf. This is one of the few decent samples I’ve ever gotten in a Sephora shipment, but ended up being something I thought Mr. Ockeghem would like more. Today seemed like a good time to dig it out of his drawer.

I just brought my geranium with the mint-scented leaves in for the season. It doesn’t flower, but I keep it just for the leaves.

Allegedly we’re getting sun today, before another atmospheric river settles in tomorrow night. Ah, climate change fall…

Good morning☀️ It’s rainy here today but I’m feeling sunny because Friday is my out of the office, get things done day and a nice transition to the weekend.

I reached for FM Une Rose this morning and am always impressed by its complexity. I’m going to spritz Covet later today since it’s being worn by so many for the CP. I haven’t tried it recently and look forward to refreshing my memory.

    Wearing Tonka Imperiale today.

Got my Covid bivalent booster on Sunday and arm was quite sore for a couple days…no other symptoms really except mild chills that first night. Also got my regular flu shot yesterday w/ very minimal soreness. Covid booster arm soreness was probably 7 or 8 out of 10 and flu shot was 1 or less for comparison.

My 9 year old has gotten fearful about getting shots. 🙁 She was never thrilled about them but now really doesn’t want to get them. Would love to hear any tips anyone has to assuage her fears please. I have tried bribery but she’s holding strong so far. 😉

I’m with you. My flu shot felt like nothing as far as soreness. Although I have to admit my Covid wasn’t horrible. I mostly got the swelling under my arm for a few days.

That’s a tough one, She-ra. I think most of us hate shots, the flu shot is mandatory for me and I usually procrastinate every year til the last possible day it’s due just to put it off. lol
I don’t have any great words of wisdom, but at 9, she is old enough for the two of you to have a conversation about it. Sometimes just knowing that someone else is acknowledging your fears can help. Something along the lines of…I know you’re afraid and I don’t blame you. Shots stink, and they hurt, and I don’t like them either. But you know it’s to keep you healthy, right? And then give her some choices…ask her where she’d prefer to get it and if it would help for her to be lying down instead of sitting up (this helps my youngest), and then yes! Bribery.🤣 My kids always got a choice of treat after shots, usually ice cream.👍

I don’t know if this is any help, but I’ve let my daughter bring her blankie along to squeeze during her COVID shots. Over time, she’s graduated to just needed to squeeze my hand to deal with the fear of the needle. We got her through a lot of shots this year, because she had to have travel vaccinations, as well (though not as many as we had to have…).

I used to hate shots as a teen / early adult, as well. What I’d add to madtowngirl’s excellent advice above is maybe a discussion of the fear of the needle being worse than the shot itself. (I still have to talk myself through this, especially when I’m having blood drawn.) Squeezing blankie was my daughter’s way of dealing with the fear as the needle came at her, and then she’d tell us that the shot wasn’t as bad as she thought it would be.

And yes! Ice cream! There was a gelato place outside the convention centre downtown where they were doing the first few rounds of COVID shots, so we went there after each shot.

If getting injections in a pediatric setting you can ask if they have a Buzzy Bee or a shot blocket to use to distract and provide some numbing. Also EMLA cream can be used at the site to numb it in advance. It works well for lab draws also.

As a formerly fearful kid re: shots, I wish I had some helpful advice. My Mom used to bribe me with Peppermint or Spearmint Live Savers to get my allergy shots.

As an adult who still doesn’t like them, I have noticed that the skill of the person giving the shot makes a difference. Also, keeping the arm that is getting poked relaxed does help with post injection soreness.

One year I got a flu shot from a nurse who used her fingers to rub my arm right at the time she injected. I never watch the needle go in – just because I don’t want to reflexively shrink back. When she noticed I was still sitting there, she told me she was done and somehow I had not event felt it.

One physician I know has to be held done to get her flu shot so it isn’t just kids who hate shots.

I think I dislike the systemic effects that come later with the COVID shot more than the arm pain. I lost almost 48 hours staying in bed with the booster I got in June.

Wow! Everyone gave such great advice. (My guess is it’s a fear/anticipation thing, not an actual pain thing.). I can’t add anything, except my hope the experience itself starts to lessen the fears. I hated shots (based on having to get a series of 7 shots in a short period as a kid). One day, as an adult, I kind of realized the needles were thinner and it really didn’t hurt much. The fear dissipated. Still look away when having blood drawn, though.

Feel like I’ve been away forever…been a week since I was checking NST. No reason, other than normal business and distraction. Leaves are almost all gone, and our town has started to be more “winter quiet.”

Been wearing Shalimar Tonka and other fall scents. No geranium or geranium leaf in my collection, so I think I’m gonna grab a Chanel today. I think Gabrielle Essence will do. I’m toggling at work between bakery cities and learning checkout. After my first training session, I had a nightmare that I crashed the computer and lost all info on everything I’d scanned for a customer. And, of course, there were folks waiting. I had to laugh.

Cleaning the kitchen and listening to Boz Skaggs performing old standards. His voice works well on these. I like his more jazzy and blues-based works.

I am very happy to participate in today’s community project, because I finally can smell again. After months of on and off loss of smell (and taste), or being able to smell the base notes only, which is a very weird sensation, I think I am more or less back to normal. And I do have a nice fragrance with geranium leaf note: Strange Invisible Perfumes Musc Botanique. The geranium is up front and it’s a really striking and unusual addition to what is basically a beautiful botanical musk.
I’m just glad I got my mojo back!

Lots of rain overnight and still at it this morning, but I’m warm and cozy in Ummagumma. I think this one is just about perfect. It’s not too this and not too that. The balance is just right (like I know what I’m talking about!).

I remember wearing this to work one morning when I was in Oregon and getting report from the night nurse, when he suddenly stopped and looked up with a kind of stunned look on his face and said, “God, you smell good!” Very emphatically. Then he apologized..!? Why? Can people no longer give a compliment without expecting some kind of harassment accusation? Geez! I said no apologies necessary, thank you very much, wrote down the perfume name for him on a scrap of paper, and clarified that this one was easily worn by males and females, just in case he was wondering. I hope he ended up getting a bottle. 😊

It really affects the cooking and I was disappointed because I had to let them go a bit longer than usual and they wound up being tough. I did eat half of one breast but am afraid that my kitties were the beneficiaries of this new “problem” (not that they minded!).

I went with Masque Love Kills. It is very rosy with a metallic afterburn that reminds me a bit of Eau de Protection and Lustre.

Wearing a dab of vintage Cabochard. According to Fragrantica, this qualifies! I’m beginning to think that geranium is a very useful fragrance ingredient, indeed. 😉

Joining in with Tauer Une Rose de Kandahar. The Taueraude is not blooming as much for me today, but I still get that fabulous rose. Looking forward to my first “gender reveal” party tonight via Facetime to my niece and her husband in Utah. She’s a kindergarten teacher and they are both quite artistically inclined, so I’m guessing they will have something fun in store.

Taking geranium points for Rose Jam, the solid version. Does anyone have insight on the edt? I would love this to last longer, but the body spray smells different to me—somehow more aggressively sweet.

No help here, but over time even the shower gel started to seem too sweet with me, and I started cutting it with ShiKai Yuzu — then I loved it again 🙂

(ShiKai Yuzu works well with almost any too sweet shower gel, it’s very useful.)

We’ve woken up to a very dull and wet Saturday morning, it’s not cold, but it’s certainly gloomy.
I finally checked Fragrantica for geranium notes, and the only perfume I have on the list FM’s Une Rose. I’ll save that for tonight, and will venture out to the local perfumery shortly to try some new things.

I am into layering lately and trying different combinations.
Today I am wearing Coco Noir layered with vintage Amarige.
I have an important dinner tonight , so I am stressed a little about that.

Happy Friday, all! With the limited selections I brought down to Florida with me, I did manage to bring Lush Ginger, the solid version. I was copiously applying it around 4 am when I woke up. Not sure if it was the frogs that woke me up or that I’m still not used to the 3 hour time change yet.

For whatever reason, I’m glad I could participate in the cp this week!

Taking points in The Different Company’s Osmanthus today. I don’t know that I would have realized it had geranium if I wasn’t looking for it, but now that I know it’s there it pops right out! I was expecting this to be similar to Osmanthus Yunnan, but they are quite distinct. To my nose, this one is osmanthus in a bouquet of other florals, while OY is a triad of osmanthus, peach, and tea.

    Tea today is Darjeeling Singbulli.

Le Labo Geranium 30 for me today, a limited edition from 2014 that’s the most geranium forward perfume I have, albeit just a decant. I’m so glad I joined the split that the late Monica Hsiao (womo531) hosted back then. I still have about 5ml left.

Wednesday evening I got my COVID booster and flu shot and was down for the count for the first half of yesterday. I continued the tradition of intense fatigue and headache plus body aches as my side effects. Luckily, I had planned these shots around days I’d taken off work, so I was able to lay low yesterday.

Had a relaxing morning and early afternoon and now about to head out for a walk to look at Halloween decorations on a couple of streets nearby that go all out. Happy for a beautiful fall day!

Sorry, although half a day isn’t so bad…it’s rare that a shot doesn’t take me out for at least 30 hours! I am unlucky that way.

And I totally forgot about that Le Labo!

Eek, and yeah I felt really bad overnight and in the first part of the day, but it was a shorter recovery time than my other COVID vaccines. I’ll take it!

SOTD for today’s geranium leaf cp is Terre d’Hermes. One little spray was all that was needed to scent my morning yoga with citrusy/woodsy notes, perfect for the blue sky and beautiful golden maple just outside my window! We’re going through a stretch of really nice weather and, despite some falling leaves, there’s still lots of beautiful color to behold.

Starting with the library book sale last weekend, this was probably the most social week I’ve had since pre-pandemic and I am grateful life is slowly getting back to normal🤞. One highlight was seeing ‘House of Wax’ with Vincent Price, this month’s classic film feature at my town’s historic movie theater, the first time I’ve been back since the pandemic began. Our host’s featured in-person guest was Victoria Price, Vincent’s daughter, who recently wrote a biography of her dad. I learned so much I never knew about him – he had studied art history at Yale, was an avid art collector and a recognized authority on the subject, and another passion of his was cooking (there are several books featuring his recipes). She added so much to a really fun night!

Looking forward to a multi-media concert this weekend featuring my favorite cellist, then we’ll finally be going to my favorite state park in the unglaciated area in western Illinois to catch the last bit of the fall color. Skipping camping this time, we’ll be staying at a friend’s nearby farmette. Can’t wait!

Hope you all have something to look forward to that will make your weekend great! 🍂🍁

I had a fractured night of sleep last night. When I was asleep, it was good sleep. There just wasn’t an unbroken string of it. So I am kind of out of it today.

SOTD = Aromatics Elixir. I want to thank the people here who mentioned that it has geranium it in earlier this week. It isn’t quite Wrappings, but it’ll do in a pinch. 😉😆
