Wednesday scent of the day 10/26

Posted by Robin on 26 October 2022 128 Comments

It’s Hump Day and National Pumpkin Day. Birthdays: Mahalia Jackson and Natalie Merchant. The splitmeet is still going! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking more geranium points in Parfum d'Empire Azemour Les Orangers.

Reminder: on 10/28, wear a fragrance with geranium leaf, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am wearing Zara Cherry Smoothie, this is my first Zara scent and I am impressed, it reminds me of Rahat Loukhoum.

Do you know any other good ones from Zara? I really want to try Rose Gourmande.

I haven’t tried Rose Gourmande, but I have tried a bunch of others, and here are the ones I liked:
-Red Temptation really is a decent substitute for BR540.
-Energetically New York is like a more reserved younger sibling of Santal 33. (I wasn’t a fan of this one, but I don’t like Santal 33 either. If you do, this one is worth a sniff).
-Jo’s Rhubarb is fun if you like rhubarb.
-Magnificently Dubai is a cozy, baking spice + oud (they say leather but I get oud), and is fantastic in candle form.
-Fashionably London starts with tart, zesty citrus and morphs into a slightly soapy rose (a combo that I particularly like, so YMMV).
-Waterlily Tea Dress is a really nice mint and floral that reminds me of mint tea

I am wearing the 2015 version of Bat, from my first Zoologist Discovery Set. So far the most prominent note is the earth tincture. This is very interesting, and I have a sample of Night Flyer, so I will have to compare them.

It is (for me, and for eastern Canada) bizarrely warm this close to the end of October, 19°C, and ickily humid into the bargain, but I’m still wearing the warm ‘n cozy SL Jeux de Peau, guaranteed to put a smile on my face whatever the weather.

I had cranberry pumpkin steel cut oats for breakfast, so my timing was perfect for celebrating National Pumpkin Day. 🎃

I’ve been busy this week, but never too busy to be properly reeking. I’ve worn Aedes Palissandre d’Or, Akro Dark and AdP Fico di Amalfi this week.

My sweet pupper had an upset stomach last night, so we’re taking it easy today. The leftover canned pumpkin will come in handy when she’s ready. ❤️🐕❤️

Another warm and cloudy day. No complaints about it, except for the high humidity, which is making to be outside very uncomfortable.

I didn’t know it was National Pumpkin Day and by pure coincidence I am wearing B&BW Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte Mist and Body Lotion and having my second cup of coffee with pumpkin oat milk.

This week is going very slow. Counting the days already for the weekend to arrive

    Happy Wednesday! 🎃☕️

Taking it easy this morning in Cuir Mauresque. Both Mr. G and I are having only very mild reactions to our booster shots — in fact, the Mr. says he has more soreness in the arm that got a tetanus shot (after the garage mishap, for those who missed the original post) than his booster arm. I admit to sleeping in until 8:30, which is very unusual for me, so I guess my immune system is taking it easy too.

RIP Leslie Jordan. What an absolutely adorable man he was. 😢

I’m in Tauer’s PHI thanks to the person who mentioned it has geranium leaf. I’m too lazy to look these things up myself. Thanks also to all those nice people who did Splits and/or bulk orders 🇮🇹.

I’ve been told I can’t come into work if I have any symptoms at ALL even though everything is negative, test wise. I remember not too long ago we were told- “Even if you test positive for Covid you must come into work! One foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel? You MUST come into work!” Seems the pendulum has swung 180* and both ultimatums are ridiculous. To think I could have stayed on the islands for another week…😩

On a pleasant note, it’s wonderfully cool today and though it’s quite cloudy, I think the will shine at some point today! 🌞

Thanks for the link. I will read it tonight. Otters, adorable as they may be, are wild animals. The ever increasing sprawl of humanity into wilderness areas will cause increasing conflict between humans and wild animals. Some animals respond by leaving the area and looking for more remote spots and some respond by adapting to human habitation and finding a new way of life by consuming trash, outdoor pets, etc.
It’s a collision course that’s been increasing in speed as swiftly as human population increases. We all know who will lose, but what many don’t realize or care about is that the way wilderness goes, so too will humanity, eventually. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Robin — I didn’t realize Azemour had a geranium note, so you’ve likely inspired tomorrow’s choice, as well. 🙂 Funny, none of these seem to come up in any of the geranium note lists I looked at…

Morning, dark and cold again. I have been watching the blackbird chicks as I can look down into their nest from my deck. Yesterday , first thing, when I went to check they were both gone, having fledged. They were tucked into the leaves below the tree, both alive. It takes about four to five days from leaving the nest to being able to fly, and the adults continue to feed and protect them, bringing them food. It has been incredible to watch close-up: seeing the chicks start as featherless blobs and end up as feathered birds, but without tails yet. The chicks didn’t stay put, but moved around. And the adults go back and forth feeding and feeding and feeding ( I put out apples) .At morning tea I looked out in time to see one of the neighbour’s fluffy tabby cats in the driveway with a dead chick in its mouth. I haven’t seen the other chick since. So there you have it.

Speaking of vintage perfumes, can I go on a little rant?

When I was first starting out fragrance collecting vintage perfumes were readily available for cheap in all sorts of formulations. My first vintage perfume was an untouched bottle of Joy that I got for all of $25. it was a great way to discover the history of perfume, and frankly also a great way to start a habit. I was hooked!

However, now that would be almost impossible for a budding perfumista to do – especially someone with the limited budget I had then. Everything remotely “vintage” is priced for hundreds of dollars or even more — I saw someone trying to sell a pre-2013 bottle of Rochas Femme for over a thousand dollars. Not only is pre-2013 Femme widely available at discounters for around forty bucks, but as far as I can tell from the reviews at Basenotes 2013 just meant the bottle got slightly uglier, because the perfume is described in exactly the same way – leather, prunol, cumin, skanky and rich. There may not have even been a reformulation.

And anything that does get actually discontinued vanishes from the usual perfume sites and suddenly turns up on ebay priced to the skies. I don’t think this is the result of fans swooping in to make sure they can still get a bottle of their favorite – I think internet sellers are scalping, plain and simple. It makes me very cross. Like I’m sorry, but that bottle of Tabu from 1990 is not worth 300 dollars. It is Tabu, not Iris Gris.

I think this is the way everything is trending. From houses to clothes to food to perfume. Greed is the national religion it seems. The only defense is to stop buying nonessentials. I came to that conclusion this morning after going a bit overboard at the split meet, including a FB of Onda, I will stop perfume purchases. Hoping this vow will last past lunchtime! 😂

I know what you mean even the prices for current perfumes are too high. I remember I used to buy Serge Lutens exclusives at Palais Royal for around 100 euros.
Now each bottle I am interested in is more then 300$.

I just commented below how i got a bottle of Femme (supposedly, probably) from the 90s from ebay. It was $40 + shipping, so i think i got a good deal. I definitely had to cruise femme ebay listings for a couple months though, sort by price low to high, and dig into the seller details before I pulled the trigger.
It’s not the same market as it was even 5 years ago, that’s for sure.

I am so glad I started seriously collecting 20 years ago, when things were still semi-affordable. It seems you can hardly find a good niche scent for under $200 now, most drifting towards $250-$300.

I’m in 1000 EDT. I love this scent-kind of reminds me of Dans Tes Bras. Sometimes, with vintage fragrances, I feel like they’re wearing me-like I can’t support them emotionally. This one works for me, and I think it smells expensive, and it just makes me happy. Hope everyone’s having a good Wednesday 🙂

Whoops! Is it the new or the old version? I haven’t smelled the older one, am curious about it. I do love the new version, it’s my favorite summer scent.

A couple of years old. I must have smelled the old version back in the day, so I don’t think there were immense differences.

I am super into Rochas Femme lately. I got a mini splash bottle from Frangrancenet and the top notes are a little off but after 15 minutes those fade and it gets delish. I am sure it is a more recent formulation, and I recently bought a bottle from the 90s off ebay. I am excited to try it, and am actually kind of putting off trying it for the first time becuase my stomach has been iffy lately and I don’t want to make a bad association with FB Femme. So I dab a bit on from my splash and enjoy.

I’ve been really into incense matches lately. the brand is called “The Incense Match.” I like to light candles while i work from home, and so i use the incense match to light the candle, the incense burns for about 45 seconds to a minute, and it’s a nice little kick to the day.

There won’t be many points for me this week, I’m not keen on geranium. It spoils a lot of rose perfumes for me, as it I find it a bit sour. I’m wearing Hiram Green Shangri-La, it seems good for a more spring-like morning.
I saw a re-release of Shangri-La on the Parfumo website, does anyone know more about that?

Maybe that’s why I find a lot of rose perfumes in general on the sour side?

In HDP Ambre114 today. I found it in my discovery set, and suspect that I have not previously tested it. My thanks to Robin for clearing up my confusion about geranium versus geranium leaf yesterday; now I know that I am CP compliant!

I like Amber, but often find it difficult to wear. I decant of Profumum Ambre Aurea and find it beautiful, but often overwhelming. Today, I put on just the lightest spritz of Ambre 114 and I’m enjoying it.

One of the things that I love about NYC is the access to great authors and figures.
Last night I saw Tim Gunn in conversation with Stacy Schiff about her new book about Sam Adams. Was a great evening.

A few weeks ago I saw Sam Heughan at the 92nd Street Y. I didn’t get buy a ticket but a friend of mind, her friend cancelled, and she asked me to take her place. He wrote a book also. I was under the impression at this event that none of the women were there for the book.

Anyways, more about books. Seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo is very good so far.

    SOTD is commando…

Wearing MFK Grand Soir today. My splits will go out in the mail today! Also doing a fix-it project on a couple of expensive candles that got tunneled. I melted them on a candle warmer to a completely liquid state, then replaced the wick. Somewhat satisfactory result. I think the real answer is to stop buying expensive candles. LOL. Although ironically, the most expensive candle I ever bought, a Cire Trudon, burned the most evenly of any candle I’ve ever. So maybe the answer is to only buy horrendously expensive candles?

Smoothie is frozen summer fruits, fresh apple and yogurt.

I’m in Dioressence Eau Parfumée for the CP, it’s my most potent and is the original formulation by Guy Robert. To add to the thread on Rochas Femme and prices, Dioressence, especially this version fetches sometimes ridiculous prices on ebayuk while I bought mine for around £30 for a full tester from a lovely woman who was selling several bottles but that was seven years ago.

    Tonight it’s Angel Muse edt.

Wearing a sample of MMM’s Coffee Break today because the freebie sample I have was on the top of the pile. My usual reach to MMMs is: OK yes this smells like the thing you say it smells like, but do I really want to smell like that for the next few hours? Usually no. I thought I had tried this one before, but I guess not because it was not in my notes, and I am shocked at how much I like it. I would not have thought fresh coffee, tonka, and lavender would go so well together but I’ve been quite happily sniffing my arm all day.

Tea today is Formosa Oolong to shake things up.

Costco.com has most of the line right now at a decent price, so I’ve been revisiting some of them just in case one of them does impress me this time around, but other than this one my reaction continues to be “ehh” (which I guess is better than “meh” but is far from “wow”).

Commando because I am extremely tempted to go to Lush.
Speaking of vintage, I’m hunting for a bottle of perfume that my grandmother and great aunt used to wear. They would pass it back and forth. My cousins are counting on me to find this
It was cylindrical, with a knobby thing on top (my cousins are describing) and a small squarish layer to hold it. It had flowers, they think roses on it. They were around a small square bottom. There was a label with writing on one line and writing on another below.

I screamed Bee bottle!!!! Looked it up to show them and no dice.

My father’s youngest cousin is about 64-ish?

    Any ideas?

Thanks! Hope everyone has a smile today.

    Late to the party.
We had a lot of rain and wind overnight and lots of leaves came down as a result. I know it happens every year but this has been an especially gorgeous fall, I don’t want to say goodbye.
So I’m wearing Memoirs of a Trespasser because it is so perfect for this time of year, it’s like a vanilla campfire.
