Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, late October 2022

Posted by Robin on 22 October 2022 164 Comments

It's the weekend, and we're relaxing with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you’d most love to find in the splitmeet this week, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Light drizzle most of the night and now a proper rain fall. We need the rain so bad but I’m hoping it lets up intermittently so we’re not stuck in the van. Did a couple of short hikes yesterday and explored the “village,” such as it is off season. Found a lovely pair of pearl earring that are quite modern in design. Not your grandmothers pearls for sure! Also found a cute quilted wall hanging featuring perfume bottles in various fabrics- silk, satin, and brocade. Great idea but average execution and way overpriced imo.

Biggest news of all is that I was on the beach with doggo (we’re camped right at beachside) when up rolls a very curious sea otter. I think he was trying to figure out T-Rex who has been wearing her very bright salmon orange rain coat. Back and forth he swam, parallel to the beach, keeping an eye on us the whole time. So freakin’ adorable! 🦦 🥰

Wore SSS Tabac Aurea to bed last night, but will go with a spritz of Profumum Ambre Aurea when I finish my breakfast. Hot, hot coffee and pumpkin brioche this morning. Yum!

    Happy weekend to all!

Nice all around. Regarding the quilted wall hanging – could you have offered to purchase it for a more reasonable $$$s? I only ask because I have found there’s really no harm in asking, even at customer service for the big box stores.

Oh well, I didn’t want to buy it, so I never thought to ask. I just thought it was a cute idea and all Perfumista’s here might get a kick out of it. Or maybe the more crafty here might think of doing something similar. I hardly buy anything (except small stuff) because I have no room. I did buy the earrings though. But, I’m my defense, they were quite reasonably priced and very unique. I already got a compliment on them this morning. 😁

Dogs and sea otters are my favorite things.

Both of them together? I would have exploded with joy.

If you ever need something to help you chill, the Monterey Bay Aquarium live cams are just amazing. My favorites are the sea otter cam and the jellyfish cam.

Cool but not cold and I’m in Molinard Habanita, the best recreation of a scent I have ever smelled — warm and lush and powdery, classic but modern at the same time.

We bought a sewing machine about a month ago because it’s becoming almost impossible to get alterations done for some reason, and we figured we could take up our own trousers and save time and money. Just for fun I decided to try to make a mask, and after a lot of mistakes and false starts (I somehow sewed the elastic between the layers on one of them, but I treat it like a gauge swatch or a sketchbook), I finally produced something that looked presentable and wore it to work that very day, and wasn’t I thrilled.

And now all I want to do is make masks. We just got back from a fabric store! I throw myself headlong into everything I do. It’s my basic nature.

My husband loves playing with the sewing machine and is far more talented than me, although I do joke that his first attempt to sew a mask looked like a jock strap. 🙂

My son bought himself a sewing machine this past year! He wants to design climbing wear and figures he needs to understand how to pattern and manufacture it. I’m not sure how much he’s used it yet, but he has used it. It sure ain’t the same technology as my old Singer in the basement.

Wow, that’s really cool! What kind did he get? My mom has a Bernina and agree the technology is amazing. I have a vintage Viking/Husqvarna that’s probably as old as I am.🤣

I have three full-sized sewing machines which are just sitting here like an unused bike; I also don’t know if they work. I also have a teeny tiny sewing machine which has been in its box for the last 3 years. The chances of me using them (perhaps except for the tiny one) is nil. The next time there’s a dumpster, I’ll likely take steps to get rid of them.

Oh dear, I would hope you could find a home for them.

If there is a craft store or sewing machine repair shop maybe they could give you destination ideas. Or high school home skills class.

Or a local community center or faith center that may offer sewing classes to people seeking employment (a church in my city does this).

My sewing machine will be 50 years old next year — it was my mother’s , and it is a workhorse. When I decided to start using it, about 15 years ago, I had it tuned up. I’ve had it serviced once since, to put a new wheel on the bobbin winder; I’ve spent maybe a total of $150 on those services and the machine works great.

Some of the older sewing machines are superb.

When I moved cross country at age 22, my mother offered to pay for either a sewing machine or a television. I picked the sewing machine and it was the better deal. Just a basic brand but it does the job.

The art school where I took my stained glass class is desperate for sewing machines for a teen sewing course they teach. If you decide it is time to ditch yours and would like to donate them, let me know and I can coordinate it.

I used to be a sewing fiend, made a lot of my own clothes. I did pull out my machine in 2020 to do some masks and some came out quite well, it was a good use of scrap fabric.

I made a lot of tailored dresses I still pull out once in a while. Most of my work attire is casual these days and my more formal stuff seldom gets worn. My daughter is getting into sewing and it was fun to show her some techniques. For myself, I think my vision has deteriorated to the point that the fine work would be difficult. I still make simple articles on occasion and I sometimes hem pants and do repairs, those I take denim to the tailor because my machine is too wimpy to hem jeans.

I think sewing is a lost art and I admire those pursue it. It was fun to get a great piece of fabric and wait until I got the exact inspiration of what it would become.

I’m sampling Profumum Alba (inspired in part by Deva’s love of Ambra Aurea), and it’s an “oh no!” in that I must have a FB immediately. I will try to have some self-control and use up the sample, but Alba will definitely have a place on my perfume shelf very, very soon. It’s warm, cozy woods with a smidgen of iris and vanilla, and is perfect for the sudden change to autumn temperatures around here.

That’s exactly how I felt about Ambra Aurea- FB immediately! Luckily, I was able snag a travel size. I’d like to explore more of their perfumes, but who am I fooling? Even the travel size, $/ml is pushing my limit. Enjoy Alba, which I now feel compelled to research…😬

Beautiful sunny day in the upper 60’s today. I am planning to go out of town later this afternoon with my younger sister, my nephew and his girlfriend to enjoy the autumn scenery. We also have tickets for tonight to visit a Jack O’Lantern and Halloween outdoor display at the Old Bethpage Village museum. We are expecting to have a fun and relaxing day, while my mom is quietly enjoying her staying in Italy. Everything is going well so far, with some expected discomfort that is not keeping her from being very happy. I am so glad for her!

Wearing Hermes Ambre Narguile now and changing to Prada Candy before leaving home later.
On my second cup of coffee with a dash of pumpkin spice and a toasted slice of pumpkin brioche.

    Happy weekend, everyone! 🍁🎃🍂

Joining the happy for your Mother’s trip gang and have fun at that Jack-o-Lantern show. Are you going to carve a pumpkin? Feeling a little rough this morning. I had the covid booster and the flu shot yesterday which gave me a restless night. I’m glad I got it done, though.
I’m in a couple of Abel samples today: Vetiver and Green Cedar. If anyone needs a realistic cedar for layering, GC is a good bet! The vetiver isn’t really my thing.
Going to walk the doggie and then take a shower so I can start all over with my reeking adventures. 😊

I’m in Le Labo Vanille 44 which is a favorite vanilla, if not my favorite. After my decant is gone I may need one of those tiny bottles.
My teenager is having a reunion with her camp friends today, so there are 5 giggling teen age girls in the house. My other half took his mountain bike and left for the day, lol. Too much estrogen I guess.😂 I love it, such good energy.
It GORGEOUS here today! Sunny and already up to 70 with a proposed high of 79. It’s almost making me forget how short the days are getting.

It must have been “love at first sniff” way back when,or it was when I was still enthralled by beautiful bottles as well.Maybe the weather/mood/planets needs to be perfect for it to work for me,as I usually enjoy sweet pea in perfume,or any other sweet notes!

That’s a lovely photo. The leaves on the last silver birch are just opening now and once fully open will block all the sun to my room. It’s a huge tree and it creates a large wall of green. I am wearing The Perfume Oil Company ( based in Melbourne) Rouge. This is meant to smell like Baccarat Rouge but I’ve never sniffed that so don’t know but it smells like amber if it was a breakfast cereal.

Kanuka, unrelated to perfume, but I wanted to thank you for the book recommendation of Hudson Bay Bound for my daughter. It was one of her birthday gifts last month and she absolutely loved it. She said she was glad there was a dog on their trip.☺️ Now she’s going to look for the book that apparently was the inspiration for the women’s trip.
Any more recommendations? I’ve got Christmas coming up.😉

I’m pleased she liked it. Not a canoe book but a cycle journey along the Silk Road by a Canadian scientist and her best friend. I found it interesting and bit more subtle than a lot of travel journeys.

I will have a think about journeys with dogs ( the Australian classic, Tracks, comes to mind. Unhappy ending for the dog though).

Got my flu shot this morning so I’m taking a day off from perfume. Just trying to have lots of water, and we are taking it easy by the pool this afternoon.

Made chicken thighs in the crockpot for supper; after they are done, they get a little roast time in the oven to brown them up. Plus the salad is already made. The bonus is the fantastic chicken stock for soup later on.

    Happy Saturday everyone!

Spectacular weather – sunny, warm and dry – for my first day off in weeks. Woke up with some congestion and headache, mostly gone now. I have a lot of leftover work to do, so I need to hit it.

I usually do my adventurous sampling on my days off but I was not up to brave experimenting today so wearing a sample of Byredo Mojave Ghost. It is a good understated scent though I guess I have a lot of those already.

Waiting for my DS and Durga samples. Never tried any of those before, looking forward to it.

We have a Big Event for work this evening (like, REALLY big), so I am in that weird limbo state in which it’s too early to dress for the event, but there’s not time to take on any real project (such as baking something yummy). I hurt my back earlier in the week, so will be wearing trainers with my posh frock. I expect the venue will be so full that no one will notice, and I may be able to walk tomorrow.

I think I will wear eyeshadow tonight! Maybe just a shimmery wash instead of a full eye — I am out of practice. I think Winter Palace will be the fragrance; my husband loves it on me (as do I). Only caveat is that it is WARM here today — into the low 70s — and that one can get out of control on me in warm weather.

Glad so many have beautiful weather, it’s lovely here too.

I will make a smoothie later, simple apples and yogurt.

I started the day in Paloma Picasso from a vintage mini. It’s beautiful but such a big perfume. I am glad that apart from the mini I only have a little 30ml bottle, vintage as well, perhaps the current iteration is more wearable.

Tonight I chose Yves Rocher Voile d’Ambre, a favorite, I will wear it more this winter I expect.

Gorgeous day here today. My SOTD is California Snow from A Lab on Fire. Just lovely.

I hope this isn’t too heavy. I drove 90 minutes each way to buy an imported sausage my father-in-law loves, because I want him to enjoy some last pleasures before he passes. The leaves are all changing, it was a beautiful sunny day and I was both happy and devastated at the same time. I know this is how life works, but man,

I used to go inside my truck, close the door and scream and/or cry. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m sorry you’re having to travel to these very difficult places. I’m wearing Diorella today. It’s so beautiful. We have a sunny day but it’s gotten too hot here again. Nature fooled us with a week of wonderful COOLER weather but summer is back! Ugh. Everywhere I went today people were wearing their Astros T-shirts (our baseball team is in the playoffs). Kind of fun! I tried a place for lunch today that turned out to be really fun. I had a harvest salad, with greens, cauliflower, radishes, delicata squash, green beans, toasted Brussels sprouts, sunflower seeds, and goat cheese–it was so delicious! They have a little shop there too with somewhat exotic things, and I bought chocolate and orange shortbread cookies (divine!) and some goat butter! I’ve never tried it but I always love goat cheese so I thought I’d splurge. Looking forward to trying it on some toast tomorrow morning for breakfast. I think I’m having visions of Heidi, from the book I absolutely loved as a child!

The book I have of Heidi was passed down from my mom and grandmother. (I read it obsessively in an abridged version when I was 5 and we lived in Europe, and when we moved home Mom gave me the family book so I could read the full version.) I also have a Little Women with inscriptions that show that my grandmother got it from her Sunday school teacher. I’ve since given both to my kid, and she really didn’t care about either (sigh). But I re-read Little Women before the most recent movie came out, and found a ton of four-leaf clovers pressed in the pages. My mom was always an expert in finding those, and I was a disappointment in that department as a kid (still terrible at that).

Hi everyone! I’m back from Chile where I went for my brother’s wedding. It was lovely, but I got Covid and spent two hellish days in bed and the rest of the time dealing with the remaining cold-like symptoms. I got to know Chilean pharmacies quite well, and their equivalents of sudafed, tylenol, cough syrup, etc.! It’s so annoying to have to go up to the pharmacy counter and ask for everything you need when you don’t know what they have, because even ibuprofin is not just on the shelves for you to browse. They keep a tight lid on everything except cosmetics! I longed for an American drug store something fierce where you can select your own cold medicines and buy as much as you want! Pro tip for anyone traveling to Chile (and actually many places in Europe too that I’ve found): bring your own basic meds just in case. Also, their kleenex sucks.

Anyway, I did enjoy my time there when I wasn’t feeling like death warmed over! My Spanish improved a lot and I understand it pretty well now, even though my speaking ability is not great. My brother’s wife and her family are super nice and I enjoyed meeting them all.

My sense of smell is really diminished, and I hope it comes back to full strength eventually. What would I do with all my perfumes if I couldn’t smell them??

Congratulations to your Brother and Sister in Law! Hugs to you for your attack of Covid, so glad you are safely back home, and I hope your sense of smell recalibrates. But LOL re: Chilean kleenex. Somehow that is really funny to me. Do you think real cloth handkerchiefs are still the standard there?

Thanks Mossy! Yeah maybe they do still use the cloth handkerchiefs there! I saw them listed as a category on the inventory paper that came with the laundry bag at one of the hotels, if you wanted to send laundry down to be washed. Their paper tissues feel like paper napkins and disintegrate into little bits all over your shirt when you blow your nose into them 🤨. My grandma used to use those cloth handkerchiefs and would tuck them up her sleeve after using them, which grossed me out! I suppose it’s more eco-friendly though!

Totally get it on not having things out in the pharmacies, even in Europe. When we lived over there, I had to constantly go in and ask for Germany’s equivalent of Ibuprofen and feel like the pharmacy owners were silently accusing me the whole time. (There’s a strong homeopathic trend in German medicine.) But at least their tissues are good — actually, far better than we get in North America! 🙂

      Feel better soon!

Thank you! Yeah it’s funny that so many other countries make you ask for what we would consider over-the-counter drugs here. And I get the silently judged feeling too! I remember once in France I asked for something for a sore throat, thinking lozenges or something to gargle with, and the pharmacist tried to give me suppositories for it. They do take some of their meds that way I guess, but I said, “that’s not where it hurts!” and declined. They had decent tissues at least 😂.

In Southern Indiana, we have beautiful Fall colors and a return of balmy weather, which of course mean we need to get outside and finish our house and garden tasks ahead Winter. Travelling this weekend and not much to say on perfumes (we were travelling so I only had what was in my bag, so dregs of LADDM — need to refill that — and then my 31 Rue Cambon sample).

We got out of the city, which I desperately needed. I have a lot of stress from work lately and I’m finding that it’s manifesting physically, just under my radar until it’s not. (I forgot my mouthguard this weekend, which means it is no longer under the radar — I wasn’t grinding my teeth but clenching my jaw, which I was doing at home but letting it go; this weekend it became obvious.) It was lovely to be in the mountains, which are my happy place. It was not so lovely to be at a retreat in the middle of nowhere that wasn’t very well run and was too elementary. But…it was nice to be in the mountains. And we had to use the hotel credit this year. (We cancelled last year due to weather. Go figure, it’s a bad idea to schedule astronomy retreats in the Cascades in October. This year it snowed, but we couldn’t cancel. But they do have a nice pool and sauna, and…mountains.)

Sorry the hotel was not perfect but hope you did unwind anyway! Sauna always helps.

SOTD = Guerlain L’Heure Bleue Parfum

Swoon! This is the modern one from 2018-ish.

    I just posted 6 splits in case you’re interested – https://freebox.it.com/2022/10/22/the-splitmeet-episode-18/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E

In other news … and maybe I have been watching too many reels on Insta:
    – Normally military coming home for a leave is a happy occasion. One such person wanted to surprise her husband and asked one of his friends to help her get into the trunk of the husband’s car which was almost filled with groceries. Well, the husband drove to the side-hussy’s home and kerfuffle ensued.
    – Some people’s job is to follow billionaires and/or their families around. A girl who looked to be 8 or 9 and very worldly went shopping with her bodyguard. When the girl was asked if she could price out what she purchased and was already wearing, the total came out to 58,000 pounds (don’t know how to get the symbol on my laptop)!!! Seriously!
