Monday scent of the day 10/17

Posted by Robin on 17 October 2022 170 Comments

It's the Monday-est of Mondays, plus National Pasta Day and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. What fragrance are you wearing?

I meant to pair something with Lyra's Oxford by Philip Pullman, since ockeghem brought up the author yesterday, but somehow I've ended up in L'Artisan Parfumeur L'Eau du Caporal. It does not fit. If I think of a way to retrofit my fragrance to something in the His Dark Materials / Northern Lights universe by the end of the day, I'll come back and claim points.

Reminder: on 10/21, for Ursula LeGuin's birthday, choose a work of speculative fiction or a character from such a work, and wear the fragrance that you think fits. Your chosen work can be written, audio or visual. Bonus points if you choose a work of LeGuin's or one of the shortlisted works for the inaugural Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hmm, I’ll have to think about that today. Normally I find leather scents warming, which makes sense when it’s cold outside.

    In Hiram Green Arbole Arbole.

Rainy day and feeling very sleepy. Coffee and more coffee to the rescue, on this very busy day at work.

    Happy Monday! ☕️☕️

You smell great! I am happy to finally get a sunny morning, hope your weather doesn’t get you down. We’re drifting into winter so more grey skies coming, but we can always hope!

        Thank you, Cazaubon!
We are supposed to be back to sunny skies on Wednesday with temps in the upper 50’s and lower 60’s. Not bad! However, getting darker and darker in the afternoons is becoming very depressing! Let’s hope to stay cheerful!

You smell great! I have a bottle of Arbolé Arbolé on its way to me, after testing it this weekend from a sample. It’s the first time in a long time that I’ve tried something and decided I just had to get it! No SOTD today though; I spent the day in bed with a nasty stomach bug and didn’t want to associate any of my fragrances with feeling sick. Much better now though, so who knows what my SOTD will be tomorrow?

I fell in love with Arbole Arbole at first sniff. It is a very unique, unusual and beautiful scent. My travel spray is still half full and I also have a back up travel spray. Enjoy your new bottle! I think I will eventually get s full bottle.

Lol I found a room spray called Angel of Mine at the dollar store. It smells so good. It’s a powdery scent for, I guess, baby rooms but I got it for a general room spray. Super powdery and fresh. If I sell a linen type of item on Ebay..I spray just a bit of this above the item..I just sold a baby blanket and did this. Sprayed some conservatively above the item to make it just have a bit of that fresh scent lol. So, I smell like that, as yeah..I sprayed some on my hand..I sometimes do this with room sprays to test out? Lol. I am thinking some Chanel 1957..to have powder on top of powder haha

That sounds good, I like the idea of spraying above an item to mail. I sell a lot of vintage scarves and store a fabric softener sheet with them but that can be overpowering.

The only work of speculative/fantasy fiction I’ve read in many a year is also His Dark Materials: I’ve read it three times through and listened to the (fully acted-out) audiobook twice, so clearly it made an impact on me. (And urged other people to buy it, and gave away my paperback set to someone when I got the E-book.) Dunno if I can do an entire week, but let’s try.

Today is Jacques Fath Pour l’Homme, which is complicated and masculine and SEK SEE: it smells like the perfumer was given the brief of making every single men’s scent of the previous thirty years all at the same time, but in the best possible way. I am putting it on Lord Asriel, and specifically Daniel Craig, the Lord Asriel of the misfired movie version, because come on.

I think I can do a week but some of these books I have not read in years…going to sit down with the Handmaid’s Tale tonight. I should have watched the series, I’d remember more.

Have you watched the HBO miniseries for His Dark Materials?

I read The Handmaid’s Tale when it was new, and then reread it a couple of years ago — it feels even more prescient than ever.

I watched a couple of episodes of the first season of His Dark Materials, and of course I wanted to love it, but I just don’t know if the novels *can* be visualized: there’s so much difficult-to-film interiority (and so much exposition!) that I gave up. I guess I’d rather have it remain what it is in my head.

Yeah, I agree. I did watch it all the way through (well, as far as one can go until the final season comes out), because my kid wanted to see it. And then she spent the whole time comparing and complaining a bit about how they changed the story around. (Oh well, good opportunity to discuss narrative arc and why filmmakers make the choices they make, I guess.)

I can’t believe anybody could do justice to the books, but I am enjoying the series anyway.

Maybe helped that the series came after the movie.

I’m not doing the cp this week, because I lack that kind of imagination. This week I think that I am going back to work on some of my discovery sets, many of which have untouched samples. First up is The New Paradise by Ramon Monegal. Very figgy, and therefore not my cup of tea, but it’s not a scrubber.

I will! I own and love Paris*LA, but to me it still doesn’t smell the way I want it to! I think I’m after the fizzy opening as opposed to the rich sweetness that most of the cola perfumes go for.

I put on my sample of L’Artisan Safran Troublant last night and added more this morning. I am really enjoying the soft hug of sweetened rose and spice. I don’t read much fantasy or sci-fi, but I did love all of Madeleine L’Engle’s books so might find a match there for this week.

Off to power yoga! Happy Monday, all.

I think L’Artisan has dced (or made harder to get) all my faves, the older wonderful ones. I don’t get it.

That yoga class was challenging–I knew it would be tough when I found the warm-up hard! Now relaxing with coffee, smoothie and my favorite raisin-pecan toast.

It’s Monday, cloudy and currently 36 degrees out. Ugh. Plus my Apple CarPlay was being glitchy this morning and I had to listen to the RADIO!😱 The horror. Lol.

93F (that F stands for things other than Fahrenheit in my mind! 😡) here yesterday and I wanted to die. I think cooler weather is on the way starting today but still smoky and gross. One of worst autumns I can remember, and it makes me so sad 😭

Planning on being wakey wakey all day today, so I’m mainlining some strong coffee. Wearing Gypsy by SmellBent but will probably switch it up later. I was a bit heavy handed with application so people in the neighboring states can probably smell me! Happy weekend to me! 😎

We’re having the most ridiculous Spring heatwave and it’s not letting up.
There was this huge solar flare recently,I’m guessing that’s the reason for the current heat globally!
      Stay cool!

I think I’ve done this pairing here before for a sci-fi themed CP, but I’m wearing Bengale Rouge for spice in Dune. I love this week’s CP since I think I read more speculative fiction than anything else, across many genres and styles. I love to be introduced to a new reality in a book even if it isn’t necessarily a happy or pleasant one.

Yesterday Seattle broke a record for highest temperature this late in the year. We broke the record with our 80 degrees early in the day, but we’d surpassed that with hitting 85 in the late afternoon! I was out for a walk in the warmth and it was so jarring to walk on crunchy dead leaves while having such warm air around you. Today, we’ve finally turned a corner into fall with a high of 67. Rain is supposed to finally start up at the end of the week.

I had the same Seattle experience yesterday – speculative (dystopian) fiction indeed! Rain will come as such a relief and my Rhody will be very happy.

I’m happily wafting Memoirs of a Trespasser this morning and expecting a more normal kind of autumn day — sunny but topping out at 70F. And since Mr. G has become as fond of Memoirs as I am, I decided that it was time to up our game and ordered a 50 ml bottle while the LuckyScent F&F promo was on (many thanks to whoever mentioned that over the weekend!), so the remains of my travel spray will join the traveling decant set. Have a great Monday, everyone!

After reading Robin’s thoughts on His Dark Materials, I’m in La Curie Ossuary today, for the Jordan College crypt in “The Golden Compass.”

After telling that Car Talk story yesterday, Mr. Ockeghem reminded me that my old brain got one crucial part of the story wrong — it was a Peugeot, not a Renault! And he says the seat warmers weren’t the biggest problem; mostly it was that the ignition didn’t work. 🙂

Back to Monday in post-apocalyptic smoke. I can’t believe we still have fires in October, but as stated above for Seattle, the rain is coming. Supposed to snow in the mountains just in time for my astronomy weekend out in the Cascades.

Hello NST! We lost power all day on Sat, and then I was glued to my computer catching up on work on Sunday. So missed the reading poll. I am looking forward to going back and reading thru.

I’m in the dregs of syrupy Knowing, gifted to me years ago by Pixel, who had been given it as a hand-me-down from her sister-in-law, or cousin, or somebody 🙂 I decanted the last drops into a 3 ml vial. The color is amazing.

In books, I’ve been reading a couple on the history of Oakland, my city. In recent fiction, I loved The Promise by Damon Galgut. In junky but delicious fiction, I enjoyed The Ink Black Heart–it is a doorstop of a book, but a fast read (Hilary Mantel she ain’t!). Listening to a history of Spain on audible. I’ve got Kanuka’s Winter Time lined up for my travels next week.

Ellis Brooklyn Bee. Nice and fall-ish. It is an easy-going sort of scent, not my absolute favorite but I bought a purse spray so I have the right amount.

I’ve been expanding my collection lately by a half dozen bottles, and I do plan to purchase some more this winter for presents for myself. I am definitely leaning more towards more classic scents/houses though. Probably Hermes and Chanel.

Some of the Hermessences, and maybe one of the Exclusives but I am not sure. I have most of both brands that I want, so I think I am just being greedy.
There’s a fancy Hermes counter at the downtown Nordstrom that has travel sets you can buy, and I plan on splashing out on those. I don’t have Cuir D’Ange, Mhyrr Eglantine, and might get another 15 ml of Osmanthe Yunnan and something else.
There’s an Hermes oil that smells amazing (Hermessence Cardamusc) which is like $400. I have a couple hundred in gift cards I could use towards it which would make it doable, but I already have so many options in my perfume wardrobe I don’t know if I can justify spending that much on a scent i might or might not use 15% of over the next 5 years. I don’t know. It just feels like too much. But then again one only lives once!

Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle, thanks to a generous NSTer. Starting tomorrow, I’m planning on testing my Alkemia samples leading up to Halloween, as I think the brand has a witchy vibe.

    Today turned out to be
gorgeous after a particularly dreary morning, and I enjoyed a walk around the neighborhood which is predominantly quintessential NYC brownstones. People have taken great care to decorate their stoops and windowboxes, and beneath the arching branches of colorful leaves they just glow! I feel so very lucky to live here. In Kulfi again, as usual, but wanted to say that I finally got the correct parts of my LUSH order, includiiiiiing Sticky Dates!!!! DEFINITELY the stand-out of the order. Mango is ok. I don’t need any more of it, but I will certainly not mind using up what I have bought. But unless I get sick of it in a couple months, Sticky Dates will become a permanent part of my life, as Rose Jam has. It’s so great–notes of brown sugar and caramel and rich buttery bread pudding. It tastes positively edible.

Also, I went to the Guo Pei special exhibit at the SF Legion of Honor museum over the weekend, and I think a lot of you would enjoy it, even if you aren’t really into fashion/haute couture! Her pieces are absolutely gorgeous and thought-provoking. I also really liked how some of her pieces are interspersed throughout the LoH permanent collection. The dialogue between the permanent pieces and the Guo Pei dresses really brought out new and interesting connections and questions.

I’d say Mango grows on me less every time I use it, which is pretty much every morning now because I’m trying to get rid of it. Every time I use it, all I can think is Kool-Aid. And I hated Kool-Aid as a kid, because it was so watery and I wanted real juice.

SOTD = Jo Malone Lupin & Patchouli

Very nice. I have no clue what lupin smells like in the wild. This one is fresh herby clean patchouli. The bottle is super gorgeous. I have 2 others from the Wildflowers and Weed Collection (Cade & Cedarwood and Hemlock & Bergamot).

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj1BZoWuLRM/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

I’ll be splitting a bunch of perfumes although I still need to fulfill 2 sets of freebies. I haven’t worked out the prices yet but will be offering 5 mL splits. I have decided to start with a clean slate and only accept dibs from the time I post my offering this Saturday.

    Most likely: (discounts are pre-tax)
    – Guerlain Shalimar Tonka – up to 20mL (this will be full price since that is what I got it for)
    – Zoologist Sacred Scarab up to 30mL (I have to look at my receipt)
    – Roja Parfums Enslaved – up to 25mL at approximately 40% off
    – Goldfield & Banks Purple Suede – up to 50mL at approximately 20% off
    – Serge Lutens La Couche du Diable up to 25mL at a 30% discount

I have an INSANE number of Guerlain and Hermes manufacturer’s samples so that will be the add on!

On point for National Pasta Day with tortellini and homemade Burst Cherry Tomato sauce for dinner. Mostly productive day for me, but I experienced first hand new hours for the CVS pharmacy I go to. They now are closed for a lunch break during the afternoon. Guess when I decided to pick up my Rx? 😆 Try again later, Jalapeno.

SOTD = SSS Incense Pure, because I wanted to.

… because I wanted to is ALWAYS the best reason. You smell great!

My Rite Aid is closed everyday between 1:30 and 2:00pm, no exceptions.

Walgreens also closed from 1:30pm to 2pm everyday. CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens here changed to that schedule during the worst of the pandemic.

Wow, it’s like living in small German towns, ca. 1995, when all the businesses closed for two hours in the middle of the day to go home for lunch.
