Thursday scent of the day 10/6

Posted by Robin on 6 October 2022 189 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also National Noodle Day and German-American Day, plus Carole Lombard's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I had planned to wear Vetiver today, from Jean Paul Guerlain, but all the mentions convinced me to switch to Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille.

Reminder: on 10/7, for Jacques Guerlain's birthday, wear a Guerlain fragrance if you have one. Extra points if it was created by Jacques Guerlain, quintuple bonus points for wearing a week of Guerlain representing five different Guerlain perfumers. Adapted from a suggestion by Oakland Fresca.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows the Tarte Infiniment Vanille ("Shortbread pastry, cake imbibed with vanilla, vanilla ganache and mascarpone cream with vanillas from Tahiti, Mexico and Madagascar") from Pierre Hermé Paris. You can find the recipe in the 2016 cookbook My Best: Pierre Hermé.

Wearing Guerlain AA Flora Salvaggia, from a sample I received from a generous NSTer. It is a very pretty green, watery floral scent. Perfect for the beautiful sunny, warm, breezy day we are finally having today. Not a single cloud in the sky. Love it!

    Happy Thursday! 🌞

Do I have a Guerlain scent? Call me Guerlain girl. Mitsouko, Chamade, various Shalimars, Terracotta, Insolence, Black Perfecto, Idyll Love Blossom, Baiser de Russie, and that doesn’t include the various samples and small decants of ones I’d love to have. How did this happen? It’s funny…I never also thought of myself as a Chanel person either. Because I’m not into No. 5. But I looked and realized that I’ve acquired quite a few Chanel over the years also.

Haven’t been on NST since the weekend, so just saw the CP. Which I’ve been doing all week without knowing. Black Perfecto, Mitsouko, MVP so far with some Coromandel thrown in.

Since I’m not working today, and it’s gray and rainy, seems like a good reason to do full hajuusuri level sprays of the Shalimar Tonka. I’m a bit congested, so need to spray to overwhelm that.

Side note: can I just mention how much I now love the tubes of polenta from Trader Joe’s? Fried some up the other night and topped with roasted cherry tomatoes. Last night I topped it with small meatballs in marinara sauce. I think this winter will involve more polenta, since I also have a bag of cornmeal.

Guerlain day 4: the extraordinary L’instant de Guerlain pour Homme, an honest-to-goodness work of art by Béatrice Piquet. Dusty cocoa, warm patchouli, little flashes of anise and black tea on a base of sandalwood. It’s immensely appealing, the kind of scent that encourages people to lean in a little closer. I mean, if that’s what you want.

I couldn’t find my sample of Après l’Ondée; must have thunked it at some point. (I do recall it was getting low / starting to dry up.) But, bonus: My samples are now organized.

So SOTD today will probable be L’heure Bleue, a vintage EdP sample that I got a long time ago.

    German-American Day…hmm. Maybe I’ll do schnitzel tonight!

I’m in Vol de Nuit in the extrait formulation. I was nudged into buying a little cube of this by an NSTer who told me it was glorious (which it definitely is) and would ruin me for all other versions of VdN (which it definitely has not!).

It was May 2017, so a ways back but not ancient history. It was an eBay purchase and I’m not entirely certain of the actual vintage of my bottle, if that was what you were after.

Hey y’all! Shalimar Millesime Tonka is available on the US Guerlain website today! MELT THOSE CREDIT CARDS!!

Yes, I ordered one; my no-buy is broken.

SOTD is Guerlain Liu. Theoretically this is by Jacques Guerlain, though considering it’s a modern bottle, I kinda doubt it’s his original formula. Still, fizzy fun for another warm sunny day here.

I’m in Vega. I don’t wear it often but when I do I’m reminded of how lovely it is. Before having a “little” more self-control I bought this simply for the Art Deco bottle, wasn’t a fan of the scent. It’s grown on me. I’m very happy with my choice today, I keep sniffing myself. Lol

In AA Pamplelune today, which apparently is my only non-Jacques Guerlain fragrance from the house. It goes well with today’s unseasonable warmth (into the 70s) and sunshine. This is one that I definitely prefer with MORE sprays.

Yesterday started out with Shalimar on one arm (albeit atop remnants of Tuesday’s L’HB) and L’HB on the other. As soon as I sprayed, Mr. Skal said, from across the room, “That smells good.” So he sniffed each arm and decided that he prefers Shalimar. I think I do, too, or at least, I find it easier to wear. I enjoyed comparing them throughout the morning.

We were snowed in all yesterday and enjoyed watching downy flakes swirl by the window. I gave the birds extra food to keep them going as many of them have nests now…the blackbird is sitting on a nest in our lemon tree, and looked a bit glum as snow settled all around. Anyway, today will be sunny once the frost clears and the snow will melt as the ground is quite warm now. It was quite lovely, all the bright pink rhododendrons draped in white. Wearing a dry perfume body and hair oil. Chloe Zara, smells of fig, sandalwood, saffron and pineapple. Not too sweet and melt in your mouth creamy fig. I think it sells in New York from my quick look.

I signed up for an email notification on Guerlain’s website if Shali-tonk came back in stock, but saw Pixel’s post and still haven’t heard anything from Guerlain. Before placing an order I realized it was FOMO instead of a real desire for the fragrance. OG Shalimar and I don’t get along and I found my flanker love in Mexique, so I will leave my potential purchase for somebody else. This morning I’m not in Guerlain, but Isabey La Route d’Emeraude. Cinnamon and white flowers!

This CP inspired me to have another go with Cruel Gardenia. The last time I tried it, the lack of any sweetness threw me and I didn’t like it. Now that I know what to expect, I can appreciate it for what it is: a no nonsense and rather abstract gardenia. No sugar, no cream, no headiness, no vase water, no waxiness, no whole-plant green or stem notes. Just lightly powdered petals that have passed through the Guerlain magic into a perfume. It still doesn’t have my love but it does have my respect.

It is a beautiful sunny day, but I’m drinking rainy-day earl grey to keep up this week’s streak. Today’s variant is Earl Grey Creme.

4 for 4 so far this week with today as Thierry Wasser’s day with Promenade des Anglaises. So happy to still have some left in my decant from OaklandFresca since it’s discontinued and pricey when you can find it. I think it reminds me of a super laid back anise-free version of Lolita Lempicka.

I’m glad you have time off. Just checked out that brand and that color and I really like it. Recently I bought some things by Thrive (mainly to try out their version of a gray eyebrow pencil. I like the color of lipstick I bought but it just doesn’t last well, and isn’t as moisturizing as promised. Boo. And the gray still looks too dark when I put it on. I’ve probably found and tried half a dozen gray colors of eyebrow pencil and none of them look right.

Sorry that Thrive lipstick didn’t live up to the hype. I will confess, there was/is a lot of hype around the Merit lipsticks as well. I was snared by the lovely shade which is deeper in color, but brightening is tone if that makes sense. It’s not all THAT, but it’s a very nice product that wears off very gracefully and can be worn quite sheer for a stained/blotted look, on layered for intensity.

If you’re looking for a grey eyebrow product, I feel you pain. I’ve found fairly good cool tone greys in the following brands:

Cheap as chips: NYX Micro Brow Pencil

More expensive: Benefit Precisely My brow and ABH Perfect Brow Pencil.

Recently discovered my perfect brow gel that negates the use of a pencil for me with the Kosas Air Brow Gel.

Yes, I’ve tried both the NYX and the Benefit. I liked the NYX better, actually. Maybe I’lll try the Kosas kind; thanks for the tip. I might try Merit, too. The Thrive one I tried is called “Emii” (??). I’m thinking of complaining because their ads for the gray eyebrow liner are just plainly false advertising. It’s shown on a light blonde/gray blue-eyed woman and clearly looks like a light gray, but if I draw it on with ANY pressure it turns quickly to black. It’s only gray with tiny feathery strokes and then they don’t stay. Oh well, first world problems. ;-).

I like the NYX, too, but my brows have gone all Albert Einstein on me as I’ve aged. I actually have to trim them…🙄 Thank God my nose hairs are not so problematic! The Kosas brow gel lasts pretty good on me, both color wise and keeping the hairs in place, even during work when I’m gowned up a lot of the time sweating to death. You can always return it if it doesn’t work for you…

The Merit lipstick in Fashion is just the right shade for me too–added to my Sephora cart (where it’ll languish until they give me a good reason to pull the trigger).
They’re ludicrously expensive, but the Tom Ford brow products are easy to use, and the color Taupe is perfect for me. They have a shade in both the brow sculptor and the fiber brow gel called Granite; maybe take a look the next time you’re mall-adjacent 😉

Ridiculously expensive is right! But I’ve justified it in my mind by no longer buying expensive glosses because I ended up tossing all my Bobbi Brown Crushed Glosses since I hadn’t worn them for about 2 years because of the pandemic. Lipstick formulas I’m okay with keeping for the long haul, but glosses are just bacteria bombs after a while. But, I did find the NYX This Is Milky Gloss in the shade Malt Shake. The packaging would lead you to believe it’s a deep brown tone, but it’s a lovely berry and super glossy. Price is right at about $8-9. You might want to give it a look see if you love berry shades and you’re a gloss girl, too.

I’m in Teazzurra from a sample. Not really wild about it, I have to admit. I have four manufacturer’s spray samples of this, so they go to the freebie pile. I also tried Limon Verde, and didn’t care for that one much either, so the pile is getting bigger!
I did find a stash of Shalimar edt and edp samples that are just lovely of course, so will wear one of those tomorrow. 🙂
Oh, I made a big ole purchase of a travel blender that charges via USB and makes a respectable volume of smoothie, about 14 ounces. Tried it out for lunch, and it rocks! It’s easy to store, too.

Ordered it on Sunday the 2nd and received it the 5th. It charged up in an hour and was ready to use. My daughter charges hers up every couple of weeks. I used frozen banana slices, frozen blueberries, milk, Greek yogurt, ginger and a scoop of protein powder and it blended like a champ. Hope this helps!

I like them both, though I haven’t worn either of them enough to do justice to a comparison. The Cologne is definitely less complex but no less intoxicating.

When I started posting on NST in earnest after being a lurker since its early days, I was surprised to see so much Shalimar love (I still associated Shalimar with a bygone era). Then I bought the EDP, Cologne and Extrait in quick succession, only to neglect them as I went down other fragrant rabbit holes. All to say, I’m grateful to the CP’s for a reminder to revisit the classics. Shalimar, in all of her versions, is one of the best.

I’m wearing Sous le Vent today, which I have in EDT in the fabulous Art Deco design bottle. Originally created by Jacques G. himself. It’s such a wonderful scent, how could any perfume with tarragon (or for that matter basil) be a failure? I wish it lasted longer, though I didn’t apply very heavily because I had a doctor’s appointment this afternoon. He gave me a good report on my wrist, and I don’t need to go back to see him any more, unless something comes up and I have a concern. Hurray!

SOTD = Samsara EdT, in the red bottle. The first Guerlain I ever clicked with, so I consider it “my” Guerlain. I’ve been looking at EvilBay for parfum minis, since that is the only concentration of Samsara that I haven’t smelled yet. If you like dark, honeyed roses, then yes Nahema is a safe purchase. If you prefer lighter roses, then no. My $0.02 worth.

I agree with Jalapeno and would add I love my 2018 Nahama Bee Bottle and remember thinking the new version in the legacy bottle was great but I’ve not tested it recently.

I never had a kids Happy Meal, let alone the adult version. I will give it a pass.
