Wednesday scent of the day 10/5

Posted by Robin on 5 October 2022 178 Comments

It's Hump Day, Yom Kippur and World Teachers’ Day. (Also, Canadian Beer Day.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Black Perfecto, from perfumers Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk.

Reminder: on 10/7, for Jacques Guerlain's birthday, wear a Guerlain fragrance if you have one. Extra points if it was created by Jacques Guerlain, quintuple bonus points for wearing a week of Guerlain representing five different Guerlain perfumers. Adapted from a suggestion by Oakland Fresca.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from the Classic Perfecto Steerhide Leather Motorcycle Jacket by Schott NYC, $870.

    Good morning!
Sotd is Vol de Nuit. I layered with the previous VdN shimmer body powder that was released many moons ago.
It’s the official start of 2 weeks of rain, yuck. The only good thing is that it will be cooler and really feel like fall.
    Currently drinking lavender earl grey.

Guerlain day three: Terracotta Voile d’Ete by JP Guerlain and Mathilde Laurent. Beachy ylang and vanilla roughed up with carnation: so summery.

    I’m in Shalimar MVP.
Yesterday was my lucky day because I think I have a bottle of Shalimar MT on its way to me. My credit card has been charged I have an email receipt, so it’s looking promising. Not counting on anything until it actually shows up on my doorstep though.
It will be another sunny day here with temps in the 70’s. Love it!😎🌞

Hope it arrives by Friday! Curious, were you able to find it at Guerlain’s website? I gave up checking there, and I don’t have online accounts at nor in-person access to any of the major department stores, so I gave up on regular retail. I’m waiting for my bottle from Shop France.

No, I’ve given up on their website too. Shame on them for confirming an order just to cancel it hours later. Really bad customer service imo.
I was able to make contact with a lovely SA who worked some magic. 🤞Fingers crossed!

That’s the best way, MTG. A year or so before our Macy’s closed, I’d clicked with the Lancome SA. She had worked in the store at various counters before going to the Lancome corner, and was so helpful.

In Guerlain Mahora. My decant is experiencing some evaporation, so I have to wear it more often before it dissappears.

Day 6 of nonstop rain. Hopefully, we will see the sun tomorrow.
Drinking a glass of prebiotic raspberry-rose soda that tastes pretty good. I rarely drink soda, but still it was a nice try, and not expecting to get another one in the future. I’d better get my second cup of coffee soon, before I start feeling sleepy☕️

    Happy Wednesday!

Mahora and Mayotte smell similar to each other, but not identical. Mayotte is much lighter to my nose. And there is a mystery note in Mahora I can’t figure out which is not present in Mayotte.

Yesterday’s SOTD was Guerlain AA Coconut Fizz (perfumer: Delphine Jelk) and today’s will be Pamplelune (Jean-Paul Guerlain and Mathilde Laurent). Yes it’s still summer here.

Off to do battle with my drip irrigation system. I need to add a line, remove some plants, and add some plants. Somehow, any work on the drip system inevitably involves me getting soaked. Wish me luck.

Today I choose classic Shalimar. I’m having dinner with my best friend tonight, we’ve known each other more then 40 years! Met in college and it was kismet. She’s lived all over the world, I’ve done the same but we’ve always stayed close. Now we’re both living in the same city and it’s like our youth again. We know ALL of each other’s dirt 😂 So I picked a classic perfume to celebrate a classy friend.

It snowed all yesterday and today everything is under a thick blanket of white and I expect that a lot of roads will be closed. Luckily I don’t have to go out and am keeping warm with coffee, two dogs, a warm bed and hot coffee. Two hours till sunrise and I’m snuggled up in Rahat Loukhoum, not a bad way to start the day.

Thanks to all the teachers out there! I tip my hat to your never ending tenacity, patience, and selflessness. I’ve had a few gem teachers and professors that made a huge difference in my life. I’ll never forget one of my lit professors who was from Hungary and looked exactly like the banker from the game Monopoly. He was an exacting man and graded severely and with complete honesty and total lack of sensitivity. My very first paper was “junk!” I got a C- and just about died of mortification. By the end of the semester and many papers later, he handed my research paper back with a big “A” on the last page (along with some lovely written comments), looked me directly in the eye, and said “excellent!” I just about died of joy! So many of you will never know the positive impact you have had or will have, but never doubt it- you’ve saved lives!

Wafting a very light trail of SDV this morning, the best of all mornings because it’s my Saturday. I’m going with MVP later for sure. I miss it when I don’t wear it 😢

I’m exhausted! This is my first 3 day stretch in a row since I’ve been back to work and I just can’t seem to get my mojo back. I need another 6 weeks off! My phone had 86 (EIGHTY SIX!!) alerts between midnight and 7am from patient call lights and bed alarms. I had a bunch of jumpers (in the ICU, too, where the best patients are intubated and sedated😉) and I’m worn OUT!

There’s a large RV show nearby starting tomorrow so I may go check it out…vroom vroom! 🚐

Jumpers are the worst! They’re so unpredictable.I was once almost hanging off a ledge, clinging to the arm of a frontal-lobe injury patient. They stacked 6 mattresses from the ground floor ward to catch him when he fell(The maneuvre was a success thank goodness, and I was pulled to safety myself)
      Great teachers are the best.

I really believe everyone should have to do a 24 hour stretch as an observer in a hospital from a workers perspective. Also, be involved in a code, which also happened last night, although you may find that unbelievable, too. Most people are “unbelievers” because they have absolutely no idea of what goes on outside of the shoes they watch on TV. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My mom was a nurse who spent 20 years of her career in emergency, surgery, ICU and CCU, so I had a bit of exposure through her tales from work. But I don’t remember her telling me about so many jumpers. Lots of codes though. I personally could never have done what she did, medical work is too much for my squeamish self.

Well, things have certainly changed since your moms work days. I’m assuming you mom is now a bit elderly and hasn’t practiced in quite a long time. And so have suicide rates, for many reasons, with the ER sometimes housing 5-10 patients with suicidal ideations for days and weeks because there is no where for them to go to get treatment. Although I might add for clarification the definition here in the US for a “jumper” is not the same as J.B.‘a in SA. So there’s that, too. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m wearing Chamade which was designed by J-P Guerlain. It’s just about the least favorite Guerlain I own, and I tried to put on a very light spray because I’ve got to go to PT later this afternoon. However even that was a bit too much so I’ve literally been scrubbing my arm with Dawn dish soap. It’s only an EDT but really projects. It’s not bad now, but just too sweet. I have no idea what vintage it is but I’d guess it’s at least 10 years old. I have one of those sort of bare-naked tall bottles of it that is supposed to be a recyclable kind of bottle, I guess to go into a more fancy golden flask of some kind? Hmmm. But at least I’m not getting the cat-pee note that so many reviewers on Fragrantica complain about! Now that would NOT be suitable for PT! And it’s a note I know all too well from being the human who cares for a few cranky or independent minded felines who don’t always like to use the box…. if you catch my drift. Ugh.

We have another pretty day here, but I think it’s going to get too hot later. The mornings have been so cool and lovely lately!

Oh, I should have phrased things better. To clarify: I don’t think Chamade is truly a scrubber in our normal sense of the term. It’s just that when I was trying for something light, I found myself reeking of Guerlinade and fearing that I would be that typical clueless person walking into the PT gym smelling of an “old lady” perfume and making them everyone else nod and wink and make jokes and shy away from me or even sneeze and cough in response. In fact, now that I’m back home and relaxing, I have sprayed more on so I can experience it in its more normal arc. The beginning is definitely full-on “old lady” perfume smell, be warned! But I’m hoping the dry-down will prove more subtle and rewarding.

Jicky EDT today from a decant I just received in a swap from a newish bottle, originally done by Aimé Guerlain way back when. Wow, the recent formulation has more animatic notes in the base than the vintage EDTs I’ve had. Still loving it just was a bit surprised.

I love vintage Jicky, maybe because the notes have mellowed and I feel like I can really appreciate the masterpiece it is but I can’t handle the newer versions because of said animalic notes. To my nose, the “animal” is less fecal and more bad breath.

Eek, bad breath smell is never good! Fortunately for me it doesn’t swing that way and stays in the furry musk realm. I was pretty happy with it through the day.

I’m so glad! I felt badly after I posted my “bad breath” comment. It’s just my disappointment that it turns on me when others (like you) can wear it so well. I’ll just re-channel my energy into a search for more vintage Jicky!

P.S. There’s an estate sale in Spokane featuring a perfume collection and I think I see a bottle of vintage Jicky but I don’t quite have that much energy to travel to all the way to Spokane for it 🙂

I’m in Shalimar EdT today. This is a perfume that I admire more than love, although I can definitely see why people love it.

I went looking for my sample of Après l’Ondée but must have used it up, as it’s nowhere to be found. (Wait, just thought of one more bag it could be in — the one bag I didn’t unpack from the sabbatical years ago…unlikely, but I’ll check the next time I go upstairs.)

Got my booster on Monday and was down for the count yesterday. Now all that’s left is a grapefruit of a lymph node under my left arm. Today I’m off to do my civic duty in what is a pretty insane municipal election with 11 parties (none of which are linked to provincial / national parties) and 138 candidates. And so few of them have articulated a real platform…sigh. I’m half-tempted to vote for Amy “Evil Genius” Fox (yes, says that right on the voter guide / ballot!) for Council; her platform is “Solarpunk utopia” and “End the spice monopoly”. 😀

I got that in my lymph nodes this time and the last so you are not alone. The first time I had it I got worried as I had breast cancer years ago and had a bilateral mastectomy. I was so glad to hear it was a side effect of the vaccine. It does go away after a few days.

Ah! Nothing interesting, just a bunch of 5-mL decants that I’ve arbitrarily decided count as two bottles. But the standout acquisition has been a bottle of Terre d’Hermes as a freebie from the swapmeet. I knew I liked it, which is why I asked for it, but either my skin or my nose or both have changed enough that I no longer simply like it, but love it. Which is good, because I still haven’t unpacked my perfumes at my new house, so I’ve been wearing that one anytime I put perfume on at home (rather than at work).

Maybe lillyjo will recognize this one. I definitely got a laugh out of it.

Day 6 of grey clouds here. BUT no rain!! The sidewalks have finally dried out. Local meteorologists are calling it a “drought buster”, so it was needed. Hope that the rain is headed somewhere it will be welcomed. ☔

On the minus side, I stepped in some cat barf this morning. Fortunately I wasn’t barefoot. 🥺 So it goes.

SOTD = Guerlain Ambre Eternel EDP

… from the Les Absolus d’Orient collection in the 20mL travel spray format. It is a woody, spicy, lightly fruity floral leather. I still don’t get the cardamom but overall it’s a great fragrance. This may have gotten the ax for whatever reason and I’m happy to have my piece of the pie.
