Monday scent of the day 9/26

Posted by Robin on 26 September 2022 118 Comments

It's Monday, Rosh Hashanah and Johnny Appleseed Day. Birthdays: T. S. Eliot, Olivia Newton-John, Serena Williams. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Sarah Jessica Parker Stash SJP.

Reminder: on 9/30, we're doing It's difficult, part 2...wear a fragrance that you (or someone around you?) finds difficult, for whatever reason. Suggested by Pixel, Kanuka and JB.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Nicolai Patchouli Intense today. It’s decidedly a fall day, off and on showers and sunshine and chilly. Time to break out the sweatshirts!

Rushed out of the house without grabbing anything to put on, so I am wearing a mystery sample that was in my computer bag. I get lots of peach and some suede. I think it may be Sunset Hour, based in part on the notes and in part on the juice color.

I got minimal sleep last night for a very happy reason. Yesterday I adopted three kittens, four months old, all from the same litter. They are limited to one room right now, I slept in there, and they spent all last night exploring and jumping around, including on me. I must have not fully latched the door when I got up in the middle of the night and at 5am (a full 3 hours before I usually get up), I heard Mr. Vee saying “how did you guys escape?” It took us 30 minutes find where each of the three was hiding and another 90 to coax them all back into their room. I went back to bed for an hour, but I am dragging this morning. And I already miss their little kitten faces.

Shana Tova! Despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I am hoping for peace. First peace.

Just used up the last of my Coco Chanel body cream, so staring at two Chanel empties (Boy is the other one). I don’t have the stomach just now for re-upping, too much going on in the world that jangles with the frivolity. Maybe tomorrow.

In other stomach news, I got my flu and most recent COVID jabs yesterday– so my stomach’s a bit wonky and my shoulder is s-s-s-o-o-o-o-re! Tomorrow I’m heading back to to the surgery center for another steroid shot in my back. Then I hope to be done with stabs and jabs for a while! Basta to that!

    Hello!
    Sotd is Guerlain Cherry Oud.
Initial thoughts are not loud, fruity cherry, some red rose petals and very light oud. Nothing sour, animalic or bold here. The oud just adds some body and depth. Cherry is the focus and not cough syrupy.
Now I am craving slice of cherry pie!

It’s okay. I’d happily wear it if a bottle landed on my lap but I don’t think I will pay for it myself. I wished it had more oud, more bold and not so shy.

Autumn has become an extension of summer it seems. We have predicted >80F temps until Wednesday. I realize this may seem like a cool down to those experiencing 90F+ temps, but it’s the end of September in the PNW. It should not be THIS warm.

I’m wearing Equestrian today to honor all the apples I’ve eaten in my life- some good, some horrible, but none better than the ones I bought at a roadside stand in rural NC one morning before the sun even rose. They were small and unpleasant looking, but dang! They were so good! I bought a huge bag of them and my dad absolutely dove into them, they were that delish!

Worried for all my peeps in Florida! Apparently, Pinellas County, where I lived for 30 some odd years, is strongly recommending evacuation right now, especially for those in flood zones (which is probably 90% of the peninsula). I’m sure before too long mandatory evacuations will ensue. Saint Petersburg is on a small peninsula dangling off a larger peninsula. Even if the hurricane makes landfall north of the county, water will be driven north into Tampa Bay with extensive flooding, especially if it’s near or just after a high tide. Hoping I’m worried for nothing, but time will tell 😳

Fresh heirloom apples are a world apart – that crispness and the juice is like wine! Speaking of troubles, our local paper had a wire story from Oregon about “campsite pirates” who ignore reservations and refuse to leave when the real person shows up! I thought of you Deva and hoped you’d not had such a mess!

Confronted the person sitting in their chair in front of their huge tent in the middle of my site and they skipped right on out of there. 😃 I always take a picture of the date and time with my setup in the background to make sure I have proof of residency at that site in case I have to call in the big guns 🚨

I still haven’t unpacked my perfumes because I’m busy/lazy/whatever, but I was delighted to find a sample of l’Aromatica Kulfi at work! So I’m drenched in that and smell like tasty vanilla cardamom ice cream.

My one-year wedding anniversary was yesterday! 🙂 We ate at a fancy restaurant on Saturday night, then had a fun photo shoot in a rose garden on Sunday with some friends who have a nice camera and want to learn how to use it better. I get very uncomfortable around professional photographers, but it’s really fun to have friends tell you what to do and occasionally get you to do silly things that end up looking great in photos. Afterwards, we stuffed our faces with dumplings and slices of wedding cake that we froze a year ago and thawed for the occasion 🙂 All in all, a delightful anniversary weekend to cap off a delightful first year of marriage.

Today I tested Kenzo Flower l’Absolue which has terrific notes but ended up being unremarkable to my nose, I’ll stick to my little 30ml of the original which is potent enough as it is.

Just not feeling it these past couple of Mondays. Fall is a melancholy season for me for multiple reasons and the gray weekend didn’t help. Lost Alice today – which, judging by Fragrantica reviews, is difficult for some, but not for me.

Back from weekend of wonderfully fun camping and now doing the required laundry, unpacking, cleanup. And I don’t even mind. We saw the most beautiful owl at the campsite. Looking at photos now, I think he looked the most like a Great Gray Owl. I heard him at 3:30 am on Saturday as he was (I assume) hunting –his call and the answering call off from a distance were so hauntingly beautiful (although loud), that I was happy to be awakened.

The Coffee & Whiskey line didn’t meet my expectations, not even the cologne. The coffee note is nonexistent. On my skin the vanilla is the dominant note. Nothing really exciting.
The Midnight Amber Glow line smelled very nice in the store, but when I came home and tried them, I could only smell very sweet vanilla. I might return them. Please, let us know what you think about it. It might just be my skin and nose that don’t agree with both lines.

    Monday. Feh.

Partial success on the email front. I can get to the affected email accounts by signing in online.

However, my email client application (Outlook) still does not work, and I understand why. Fixing it will probably be a pain in the tuchus. Long story short, the way I was getting email for those accounts is now considered obsolete and not secure. So I will have to backup my current email, and download a new version of the software.

I’d rather go to the dentist!

SOTD = SSS Fireside Intense, with a spray of SSS Incense Pure. They work well together. But the sprayer on my 15mL bottle of Incense Pure is not spraying very well lately. Instead, it sputters and spits. Annoying! 😡

I’m down with a cold today. All in all, it’s been pretty mild, but I feel the need to be whiny because it’s been probably 3 years since I last caught a cold. The silver lining to Covid, I guess! My son caught it from school, so it was quite unavoidable.

I haven’t lost my sense of smell, so I’m sampling a few things: Goutal’s Etoile d’Une Nuit and BDK Pas Ce Soir.

It will feel so normal to get a cold! But I’ll complain too 🙂

SotD Avon Perceive. I got it because Christopher Sheldrake is the nose. I sniff and sniff and it sort of grows on me. But from Fragrantica, I learn it has three of my least favorite notes, freesia (I get lots of freesia in it), white pepper and pear along with several favorite notes, carnation, plum, ylang-ylang and sandalwood. That gave me the idea it’s like layering two perfumes that don’t quite get along. Maybe too much thinking, but aren’t those 20th/21st century note combos – it’s a Y2K creation? But it is interesting. If it was my only perfume, I’d wear it regularly. 😀

My boss gave me a bottle of Percieve 1999 limited edition that was in a freebie box at a garage sale recently. I was really surprised to see CS as the perfumer. I only sprayed it once so far but it seems pretty spicy to me ( probably the carnation?) I was waiting for true cold weather to give it a proper wearing. I do think it smells like non sporty 90’s.

That is the one I have! Thanks for your review – we must wonder what Maestro Sheldrake was thinking, right?!?

This is the only freesia I’ve met that does not wrinkle my nose right away!

I have PTSD from freesia. Way back when it was not taboo to burn anything inside your own store (even in a mall), B&BW used to melt these melties (how about that!) that was supposedly freesia. I got sick of the smell because it stuck to me. Ugh.

Roísín Dubh for me again today. I cannot imagine this one being difficult for anyone, though I can see people who prefer a punchier rose not loving it.

Since we’ve had Vee’s adorable kittens (congrats), what do the NST cat people think about adding a second cat? Our little guy is six (we’ve had him for four of those years), and he is such a social kitty that we think he may be happier with a buddy. He came to us after a few months at a shelter, and before that had been in a home with other cats. Our previous vet (now retired) suggested that he might accept a kitten, but was skeptical overall.

Neither one of my older cats was very happy about the kitten who arrived at the end of 2020–too much goofy kitten energy for them. However, in 2018 when I introduced my six year old kitty to an eight year old kitty, they became friends.

I have had bad luck with bringing in a new cat to a home with older, established cats. My cats were very territorial and fought with the new cat over who was the alpha.

I recommend going ahead, but being very very patient. Take it slow, make the introductions leisurely and stress-free, and don’t expect an immediate connection. Jackson Galaxy (from the show “My Cat From Hell” has great advice about introducing cats to one another). It might even work with a young cat that’s not a kitten, e.g., more like a six or nine-month-old, who won’t want to play all the time. In my experience, opposite sex cats work better with one another. I have had cats who hated one another upon introduction and who cuddle one another now regularly but it’s been a year or more! In general I believe cats are quite sociable and they do live in colonies in their natural state, and so I recommend it wholeheartedly. Let us know, please!

This is why I have knitted cats – no introduction problems and it can be whatever size / shape / color I want them to be 🤣. Kidding not kidding. I would take advice from whomever here has cats although some cats are meant to be the only cat.

Prior to these three rascals, we had two cats, both female. The first we adopted when she was about 5 months, then 2 years later we adopted one at about 10 months. They were fine together. No great friendship or bonding, but no fighting other than the occasional hissing (maybe 2-3 times per year). The older was the alpha and the younger the beta, but their personalities were such that this would have been the case no matter who the other cat was. I felt bad that the older one would bully the younger (stealing her favorite sleeping spot, muscling her out of cuddles, etc.) but it was never violet or vicious, just mean. The younger one took it in stride.

Our vet told us the second cat should be about the same age the first and I thought that was good advice. My two cents is that if you know your current cat is an alpha, you may be better off with a timid cat for your second, rather than another alpha.

Interesting, thank you. I have a dear friend who is a vet and a cat lover; I’ll check in with her (after she has recovered from having her first human baby, who is due in a couple of weeks).

I love hearing about your new kittens! Seems that “two scritches” knows exactly what s/he wants.

    SOTD = Aftelier Alchemy

The 2018 version in a rollerball. Spicy floral amber vanilla 😍

Non-stop today with barely time to eat lunch but I did because I am useless hungry.

I accidentally thought that this was indie week so I started with “A”. Anyway, it was a good choice for sure and I will now need to take a closer look at the CP.

I wore Max Mara today, an old purchase I took out of my cabinet recently and have quite enjoyed. It seems to work well in the hot weather. We’re praying for the so-called “cold front” promised for mid-week. I’ve got a faucet leak in one bathroom tub and await a plumber who’s coming at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow–gaaaah. Not my best time of day, but with plumbers you take what you can get, and he’s strongly recommended by a neighbor.

    Hi all!
I’m in Neroli Outrenoir. I can still smell it after 7 hours.
I hope I’m not too late for the swap meet, but I have a couple freebies… I’ll post them now. FB low partial of Papillon Tobacco Rose, and a small decant of Hera.
