Friday scent of the day 9/2

Posted by Robin on 2 September 2022 209 Comments

Happy Friday, and happy (almost) Labor Day Weekend! (Also, Blueberry Popsicle Day, plus a few birthdays: Keanu Reeves, Horace Silver, Salma Hayek, Billy Preston). Our community project for today is a repeat from last year: take a break from community projects and wear what you want.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project. (Although really, if you're here, you're participating, right?)

I’m wearing Tauer Perfumes Rose Delight Body Oil.

Reminder: on 9/9, wear a fragrance with a hay note. If you prefer, substitute any old cereal grain, or anything that calls to mind a fall harvest (the Harvest Moon will be on Saturday). (We did a similar project in 2016.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Tam Dao. My 30 ml bottle is more than half gone. I’ll go for the big one next time. When I wear Tam Dao I ask myself why I bother to have any other sandalwood perfumes.
Madtownteen started 11th grade today. Half way done with high school. When I took her traditional picture on the doorstep this morning she told me she can’t wait until next year when it will be the last time she ever has to do it.😢 I told her nonsense, I’ll take one when she goes to college too.😂 I’m being a bad mom and pulling her out at noon today so we can take her sister back to college. I only feel slightly bad about it because it’s kind of silly (and that’s a polite way to put it) to have kids start the Friday before Labor Day weekend. I mean, c’mon.

I did the same with Tam Dao — started with the tiny cute bottle, quickly realized I was draining it at record speed, and bought the honkin’ huge bottle. The tiny one is now part of my “travel collection”. 😍

PSA (no affiliation) – Essenza in Seattle might still have large bottles of Tam Dao available at 40% off (they are clearing out their inventory since Diptyque is no longer selling in small boutiques). Essenza doesn’t have a great way to buy online so it’s best to email at info@essenza-inc.com or call at 206-547-4895.

We start the day after Labour Day, but it feels equally ridiculous. When Ockeghem Tween was in elementary school, they went for 1.5 hours on the first day. Now, apparently, in high school the Grade 8s don’t go in until noon on the first day, just to go to their homeroom…except no one has told us what her homeroom is, so I hope they have a good traffic manager at the door. Then she will spend some unspecified short amount of time there and be released.

From what I can tell, the whole first two weeks of school in her high school are a write off. They won’t even have their schedules until sometime late next week. I never have understood why school can’t just…start…on the first day of school.

It always seems odd to me that kids in the US start the school year in September and not January. Is it because of the seasons , so you have long summer holidays then the start of the term?

I think that originally our school schedule was based on the growing season as children were a vital part of farming. I think if kids had October, November and December off now, very few people would appreciate it!

So there’s this new line of jar candles at Michaels (https://canada.michaels.com/en/faceted-mini-jar-candle-by-ashland/M20021128.html), and of course I had to sniff them all. One of them is called Lavender and Patchouli, and as soon as I smelled it said to myself, “That’s not lavender *or* patchouli, that’s Lolita Lempicka.” And it is! Not a copy, but instantly evocative of that violet-and-anise scent.

So of course I am wearing Lolita Lempicka today. It’s a perfect balancing act, candy-sweet pastilles and astringent greenness in exactly equal measure, like a magic trick. It’s an extremely happy scent.

Random candle PSA. A friend sent me a candle from a brand I wasn’t familiar with. Good Medicine candles? Anyway, the Rose Otto one is very fragrant. Says it is “damask rose.” That is probably overstating it. I get rose and that scent we sometime see characterized as “cashmere.” My friend said she loves the Santalum one. Based on just this “rose” candle, I wouldn’t say “high end” ingredients (although the packaging is well done) but worth the reasonable price.

Another random candle rec (no affiliation): Siblings candle. You order online. They send you the wax and wick in a pouch. You melt it and pour it into whatever vessel you want. They must save a lot by not including the vessel, because the scents are *far* more luxe than I’d expect for the price.

I’m also looking forward to this community project!
It just came up recently, talking to my friend who is getting Sballo in Italy for me. I’ve wanted to try this one mainly because of the reported hay note but it is hard to get here. My friend couldn’t quite understand why I’d want to smell like hay, and I guess I don’t either so our joint conclusion is that I grew up on the prairies so the smell of hay must have a nostalgic draw 🙂

I finally got around to making it this week, and not only was the recipe very easy to follow, but the result was delicious. I think it will be my go-to cheesecake from now on. Not that I don’t like graham cracker crusts, but I like cheesecake more!

I am realizing I didn’t bring enough perfume for my trip, I only have a couple of samples with me. I am wearing Tauer Maroc pour elle. I guess that is a good excuse to buy a new bottle here in Armenia.
I am really surprised by the perfume choices here, lots of niche, hard to find perfumes at every corner, another thing I am noticing is that I smell perfume much more here. In Montréal, I rarely smell perfume on people.

I’m back home after two plus weeks taking care of my father-in-law. I didn’t realize how much I would miss my actual house. (I knew how terribly I would miss my husband and dog.)

So I’m extremely happy sitting on the couch drinking tea and petting my sleeping dog. My SOTD is Dzongkha. I felt almost overwhelmed when confronted by my full collection (it’s much easier to choose between 3 scents than from 98), but then it just called to me.

I’m slowly catching up on past posts, but I want to send virtual hugs now to anyone who needs them.

In Dzongkha news, L’Artisan has announced it is back in stock. I had a little fright (very little given the global catastrophes, but you know what I mean 😉 ) last month that it was discontinued, as I couldn’t find it on their website, nor at many of the usual perfume websites. Anyway, all is well in the Dzongkga universe. And you smell terrific.

Happy Friday! I am in Royal Muska – a soft floral musk. It is quite nice.

Around three weeks ago, I submitted my tax registration to Swedish Tax Office. The processing time is long, and they do not have internal regulations regarding Ukrainian refugess, so I am still waiting…

Kora has some digestive problems. On Wednesday she could not keep her food down. She just kept vomiting after eating. It was very scary. 😭She is a very picky eater when it comes to wet food and treats but is much less finicky about dry food. We could not find her usual brand of food in Sweden and switched to another. She seemed to be fine with that brand. Until Wednesday.

Long story short, one of our frends here consulted a vet and even booked an appointment for us. Yesterday Kora was alright on her usual wet food (complementary) and then on another food the vet recommended (thin pieces in gravy). But then she lost interest in the vet recommended food and refused to eat it. And this morning she puked again, this time after a dietary supplement that is supposed to help with stomach issues!

I called the clinic and was told to discontinue the supplement and just to make sure she does not starve until our Monday appointment. Today we slowly gave her another food recommended by the vet, this time a dry one. She seems to like it, and it has not caused voimiting so far. On the bright side, she does not display any other worrying symptoms and behaves normally. She seems to be just annoyed about these new dietary restrictions.

I’m taking things easy after having an emergency root canal yesterday. ;-(. It went as well as such things can,; the endodontist was very nice and also quite cute! It was lucky I could get in before the Labor Day weekend. I was actually able to eat last night. Today there’s just a sort of dull pain, plus my jaw as a whole is sore from being propped wide open for an entire hour (I have TMJ and it’s a problem for such things).

Anyway, I’m about to eat some yogurt and raspberries for breakfast. I’m wearing Max Mara perfume. My bottle is quite old–I’m thinking I bought it at the big Marshall Field’s in downtown Chicago, which gives you some idea of how old. It was probably at least 15 years ago, before I went down the rabbit hole into niche fragrances. I’ve put this bottle along with other “department store” scents like Dolce & Gabbana The One and Armani Mania onto a shelf in my closet, but occasionally I’ll get one out to re-try, and this one has newly intrigued me. Citrus and strong white florals. I don’t pick up on the supposed ginger that’s in it. It’s quite potent and not one to wear around any perfume-sensitive types.

Looking forward to not doing much this weekend, but I’m hoping to join some friends for a birthday celebration of one of them at a Thai place tomorrow night. I can surely eat pad Thai, right? It’s noodles, and soft!

I have never smelled Max Mara but love the clothing like

I have so many wonderful memories of Marshall Field’s, my favorite department store! I worked there for awhile when I was in college. Macy’s ruined it when they took over.

Very glad you got it taken care before the weekend and think soft noodles should be fine.

So glad you got your tooth fixed! This hot pepper-loving girl will suggest you get the hot level pad Thai (as a supplement to the cute endodontist). Your mouth will tell your system to release endorphins and your pains will mitigate as your nose runs and your eyes water…maybe?

In copious amounts of Paris-Venise, elegant, pretty, inoffensive.

I’ll post this again today, and again tomorrow if there are still spaces left. I’m hosting a split and still have about 40 mls total I can part with. From Wed:
    _______________________________________________________
    Split alert!

I couldn’t wait. So in the offing are the two new Divines: L’été Orange Rouge and L’été Narguilé.

    See https://freebox.it.com/2022/08/26/divine-lete-orange-rouge-narguile-new-fragrances/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E

I’ve paid in euros, so we’ll see what the final cost is, but roughly speaking, including packaging and shipping to you, it should be no more than $12 for 5 mls, and no more than $20 for 10 mls, and it probably will be less.

If you live in the CONUS, and would like decants of one or both, please email me 1. your name, 2. your handle/avatar name on NST, 3. your address in the US, and 4. how much of either/both you want.

Please do not send me money, yet!

I will want to be paid via PayPal or Amazon, but not until it is confirmed that the bottles indeed have left the seller [update, they have been shipped], and what is the final amount/exchange rate I was charged. I will email you back with the final details and then you can pay me if you still want the decant/s. ;-)! 😉

Wearing Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Viva La Frida. Description below. I’d call it tart and fruity in the vein of Calyx, but deeper. I love it. Have a good Friday, everyone.

“A lavishly colorful, lush and watery guava and salted melon fragrance. (not traditionally “aquatic”).

The fresh and lively fruit notes are beautifully tempered and restrained by green leaves and salty, thirst quenching nuances. The heart is ‘tropical creamy’ with soft gardenias and jasmines that give way to the sparse and shadowy drydown accord of dry wood and earth.”

I have been to the shop and tried them but didn’t buy any, as they were quite expensive ( 50ml for $250, or something) . I did like some of them, liked the earthiness . I think if I liked rose More as a note I would have got Purotu Rose which was a smoky, earthy rose and really nice. I liked the background story to it too. I should buy one of their sample sets. The bottles are very cool.

Thanks for the reply, Kanuka! Yes, they’re $265 usd for 50ml here. I’m pretty much at the point where I enjoy satisfying my curiosity with a sample, and that’s it. I do like the background story as well, and that was the draw for me.

I’ve tried a couple from a local stockist, but last time I lookef, I couldn’t find them. I almost like Purotu Rose, but it had too much vetiver for me. I made notes that Tobacco was quite sweet, and that Dark Bouquet was a nice floral that needed more sniffing.
This is a great reminder that I should investigate further 🙂

I can’t believe the calendar says September already – time to put away the coconut & white floral scents and bring out the spicy and woody fragrances that are my favorites. But the day still says summer – hot and 🌞 – so I’m going light on my spices and woods in my SOTD, Theorema Leggero edt; I think I like this one better than the original edp.

Looking forward to celebrating my grandtwins’ birthday this weekend – how can they be 15 and HS sophomores already? I never regretted retiring early to help care for them – we’re the only family nearby – so many wonderful memories of times shared. And my sweet granddaughter touched my ♥️ last week when she texted me to ask for my oatmeal ‘recipe’ because no matter how hard they tried, theirs was ‘no match’ for mine! I guess there are worse things to be remembered for than one’s oatmeal 😀.

Also looking forward to a visit or two to the Taste of Polonia this weekend – I’m going for the pierogi but staying for the 🎶; several of our favorite musicians will be performing there.

Wishing everyone a great weekend ahead!

Big heat wave in SoCal, and living at the beach we rarely need it so no AC. It’s a long one too, 10 days straight. Sweating it out in Goldfield & Banks White Sandalwood, which has a fair amount of rose in it, so I layered it over B&BW Rose Vanilla lotion.

That’s wonderful about your kitty! My oldest now is 17 and then two are close behind her at 15. Unfortunately they all seem to have become rather crotchety old ladies who make life difficult. One is very snappish, one is loud and demanding, and one is terribly skinny but always wants to go outside where, despite there being shelter very close by (shrubs, neighbors’ garages, etc.), she stubbornly sits smack in the rain and gets soaking wet–causing all of my neighbors to regard me as an animal abuser. Oh my. They all try my patience, to be honest. I try to remember how it must feel to get that old (I’m more able to imagine it every day now, ha ha!).

We celebrate Labour Day on the 4th Monday of October (24th this year) to honour the 8 hour day which was ‘won’ in 1840 by a carpenter called Samuel Parnell.. it became a holiday in 1890. I read that Oregon was the first US state to mark Labor Day (1887) so to blend carpentry with the NW states I am wearing Olympic Orchids Woodcut for all the workers. Not planning on much work myself as it is Saturday and I want to go to the library and read books. Have a happy weekend!

How interesting! I thought the only other Labo(u)r Day was May 1st.

I looked up Australia and was really surprised: some states mark it in March, others in May and some in October.

Saturday morning! This is the moment I contemplate the joy of a weekend stretching out before me with time to do so many things. Then I quickly find myself in late Sunday afternoon wondering how that happened so fast and how I got so little done.
I’m contemplating Aqua Allegoria Figue-Iris for this morning. It’s spring-like, with a little warmth.

Watching the cats nap in sunny spots or on their kitty condos while I take care of some household tasks. No special plans for the long weekend, and that’s exactly how I want it.

SOTD = back in Box of Eels EdT.

I’ve got plans to make at least one kind of chili during the long weekend. Means that there will be plenty of tasty leftovers as a result! 😋

It seems appropriate that I am starting the Labor Day weekend with a concurrent start to a leave from my job! Got some health challenges I need to handle before they become dire. But, as they say in Monty Python, “Oi’m not dead yet!” Or even close.

I’ve been wearing Chanel No. 19 all week to give me strength as I slowly extricate myself from the grip of an inexperienced boss, and provide all the tools my small team will need to carry on until December. I’m fortunate that my husband reminded me last weekend that this week at work could get very weird. It has. But not on my team, all of whom have been very supportive. Tonight, I switched my SOTD to Ormonde Woman, for no particular reason except I wanted to revisit it. It’s really lovely! Happy weekend, everyone!

My daughter and I are twins today in Ilio hair perfume.
I was busy with errands and laundry all day but managed to sneak a visit with my new grand- nephew. So cute and tiny! Plus he smelled good!🌞

I can actually still smell it in my hair and my daughter’s hair! It doesn’t project but wafts nicely with hair movement.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

    💚💚💚💚💚

I worked a half day today and started the weekend early!

It feels like fall in the evening these days and I am absolutely loving it. 🍁 🍂

I managed to update my Apple Watch vis-a-vis the weather up by randomly pressing parts of the watch screen. Who knew that the icon that looks like you’re copying something actually fixed the issue?

If you had a signature scent, No. 19 EdP would be it!

Yay for fixing your Apple Watch issue! Sometimes it takes a while for my smartphone to realize that hey, the sun set about 20 minutes ago. Technology.
