Wednesday scent of the day 8/31

Posted by Robin on 31 August 2022 142 Comments

It's Hump Day and the end of August. (And a quick PSA: the next swapmeet will be on September 17.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm trying Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Estancia.

Reminder: 9/2 is the start of Labor Day weekend. As we did in 2021, take a break from community projects and wear what you want.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It’s a gloomy morning with rain on the way, and I am in the equally dark and portentous Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme, the only one of their scents I ever needed to own a full bottle of. Some days the only thing that will do is a scent that bares its teeth.

Maybe? I’m in eastern Canada and for next six hours or so it is supposed to just bucket down. Like half an inch of rain an hour.

As usual the weather forecasters promised more than they could deliver. Now they’re saying about 3-4 millimetres of rain an hour, about an eighth of an inch, until midnight or so. Still a lot, but nothing of mythic proportions. They’re promising lightning later tonight, something I love: here’s hoping.

Ah, good luck with the lightning then! Since I’ve had houses struck by lightning twice, it is not my favorite thing 🙂

DSHPerfumes Muresque today for August blackberries. I’ve been picking lots of delicious blackberries down by the train tracks to top our granola.

Today is a full day from Goodwill drop-offs to unshopping errands (like Pixel yesterday) to going to my first movie since the pandemic hit (yep, Top Gun) to our fantasy football draft this evening. Phew. Happy Wednesday!

Fresh blackberries off the vine are the only way to go. The ones in the grocery store are always hard and flavorless.

“Vine” is such a polite way of putting it. I love blackberries but always felt they were a booby prize when harvesting from my own garden. 😬

DSH triplets with Robin and springpansy in Electric Summer! I will also try her Starry Nightshade (love the name!) and maaaybe Kale later. Robin, what have you liked out of the ones you’ve tried recentlyish?

      Nice showing for DSH today!

I liked the rose trio from earlier this year. Today’s is a really fun thick tarry leather that is all wrong for the weather and I will have to try it later in the year. I did not love Pineapple King. The Vachi (sandalwood) I need to try again…seemed really nice but not sure I gave it adequate attention that day.

I’m in Nicolai Fig-Tea and taking it easy this morning. Mr. G and I drove out to the Oregon coast yesterday, and walked and walked and WALKED on the sand for hours. I used to go out there for a week each September when I was single, but because of lockdowns and so on I hadn’t seen my beloved coast for 4 or 5 years. My spirit is refreshed, but my body isn’t used to that much activity anymore. 😬 Must remedy that!

We did Seaside first (hordes of people!), and then Arcadia Beach (quieter and much more my preferred style). It was cloudless and sunny until around 4:00 when the fog rolled in from offshore.

Lol one lady wanted an item 50% off plus free ship to Kazakhstan. I am not sure exactly where that is but I know it would cost a few bucks to ship there lol. So, she canceled.

More Pixi Rose Oil then dark chocolate ginger snacks later..and some kind of iced beverage. Off to beat this sun before it beats me! Lol

I don’t mind paying for shipping as I know business is business; however, if a company makes me think that I am paying $15 to have something shipped from the UK to the US and it turned out to be shipped to me from a NJ warehouse to me in NJ and NOT overnight shipping, there’s a problem. I got my $15 back.

    In Serge Luten L’Eau Froide.

I am glad it is the last day of August. The past two weeks have been very hard with my mother and now my dog Yei hospitalized. My mother with heart and Yei with kidney issues. Too much to handle at the same time, but patiently waiting for them to bounce back, hopefully some time soon. Praying vehemently for it.

It is a beautiful sunny, breezy day here today. On my way out now to spend my lunch time having an iced coffee and taking a long walk. Looking forward to a more relaxing September. Crossing fingers! 🤞

Happy, healthy and peaceful Wednesday, everyone! 🌻

Neroli Outrenoir for another warm muggy day of digging out of my boxes. Need to go through two large bins of tea and refill my canisters & sort out what goes where. Living in a house with two packrats, there is no place to put anything away. :-/

LOL. We’ve been in our house for 27 years. Ever since I retired (2 years ago!) I’ve been sorting thru stuff and stuff and more stuff. Still gotta finish the garage, though it’s too hot to work in there now. And I still have waaaaaaay more clothes than a retired person could possibly use.

I’m the one that moves – the two packrats are my husband and his son. The San Diego house belongs to them. They’ve been here for 20+ years and never move, so I’m the only one who has to pare down. Fortunately I own the place in Canada and can lay down the law about what comes in and what has to go. 🙂

Iris sniff-off, with Infusion d’Iris Absolue vs. L’Attesa. L’Attesa is the winner, which is good since I stumped up for a 100 ml. of it,. I hadn’t known that size existed existed, and it was at a discounter, so it was only the price of a fancy Guerlain.

I had to counteract a MEH fragrance that thankfully did not last long – 🌈 🍡 🦄 💩 makes things better!

I may have mentioned that my cable TV is back except for weird coloring. I did not do anything other than letting it rest. Now I have to figure out how to fix it. While trying to fix ot several weeks ago, I may have touched a setting and of course I can’t figure out what I did. Anyway, it’s better than incessant screeching and inability to turn it off except almost by chance.

I’m testing Hera again. This time it just seems incomplete, like when I play around with single note perfumes and find a beautiful combination— but it just doesn’t ever come together as a proper new perfume in its own right. Somehow it needs to be more, but also less. Maybe it did strike the perfect chord for a wedding scent, beautiful, hopeful, and unfinished?

Even though I read reviews, I expected something different. I really wanted to love it! It just never lifted or opened up on my skin. I felt emotionally uncomfortable with it, which is pretty weird. I found it dense and almost somber, perhaps fitting for an initiation? Thinking along the same lines as you, I suppose that a wedding could be considered that. Now I’ve gotten myself interested in exploring it further!

TDC Sel de Vetiver as a summer last hurrah…supposed to be warm here today, but at least it’s cooling down at night. Crazy week / month at work, and not at all good news stuff that I’m working on. Sigh.

But in random good news, two of the three supermarkets within a few blocks of me are switching their rewards programs today, and apparently for some reason that means they needed to have a fire sale and clear inventory off their shelves. So last night they were selling things for $0.99 and $1.99, or more expensive things for 75% or more off. (I got a $17 bottle of maple syrup for $5, for example). They didn’t announce it and there weren’t signs in the store; you just kind of had to know that any price tag on the shelf with a red dot was discounted some amount and hope it was substantial. By the time the word got out from my neighbors, the locusts had descended and the shelves were pretty bare, but I still got about $150 of groceries for $65, so I’ll take it!

Spring! At last. This has been a long winter and we may still get snow on Saturday. But yesterday in the gardens there were daffodils, blue bells, crocuses, wood anemones and magnolias and the honey eating birds were singing . My friend and I drew pictures of leaves but were disturbed by a loud crowing and a portly rooster came stomping out of the bushes. It was clearly quite tame as it came up to us and seemed cross we didn’t have food. It stayed nearby crowing away. I would guess that some has dumped it, as roosters tend to be unpopular in suburban gardens. I can hear one now in the distance. I talked to a gardener later and she said he’d arrived at the weekend and they were working on finding a home, or alternative arrangements. The later sounded ominous. He was a very fine animal with fluffy feathers over his claws. Wearing Cristalle, for spring growth.

Mugler Alien Extraordinaire – I forgot how much this one is. I might need to switch this from my summer wardobe to cooler months. It’s pretty; I am getting more grapey jasmine and amber than usual, I typically get more tea.

So after an hour or so this died down from a big scent bubble to more of a skin scent. I only applied two tiny sprays, so was a good reminder about Mugler power, lol.
Amber does overwhelm me in heat, although it is a favorite note I just keep it to the cooler months.

Feeling very sad today. My sister-in-law (my brother’s partner’s sister) had liposarcoma about 2 years ago. It’s a rare cancer and she had tumors in her abdomen which were successfully surgically removed. There are a few different major kinds…but hers were well differentiated, the preferable kind, and all her margins were negative with no spread. She has been getting scans every 6 months and her last was in March w/ nothing found.

She felt something a week or two ago, got a scan last week and they saw 4 tumors. She visited her previous surgeon yesterday and these are a different kind…maybe dedifferentiated or one of the other kinds which have worst prognoses. She will need to have chemotherapy to shrink them before surgery is an option I think…and may start chemo as early as next week.

She is such a beautiful woman, inside and out, in her early 50s and it just breaks my heart.

Going to put on something w/ vanilla in a bit for comfort.

Joining Team Nicolai in Riviera Verbena. Nice for a warm day. We woke up to no power but thankfully it’s back now, in time for the a/c we’ll be needing this afternoon.

My unshopping yesterday was successful. Re-shopped a little: bought a summery white purse at Macy’s which, after clearance price then star rewards then star money ended up costing $18.50 including tax. How could I NOT buy? That’s purse-math free 🙂

    Split alert!

I couldn’t wait. So in the offing are the two new Divines: L’été Orange Rouge and L’été Narguilé.

    See https://freebox.it.com/2022/08/26/divine-lete-orange-rouge-narguile-new-fragrances/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E

I’ve paid in euros, so we’ll see what the final cost is, but roughly speaking, including packaging and shipping to you, it should be no more than $12 for 5 mls, and no more than $20 for 10 mls, and it probably will be less.

If you live in the CONUS, and would like decants of one or both, please email me 1. your name, 2. your handle/avatar name on NST, 3. your address in the US, and 4. how much of either/both you want.

Please do not send me money, yet!

I will want to be paid via PayPal or Amazon, but not until it is confirmed that the bottles indeed have left the seller, and what is the final amount/exchange rate I was charged. I will email you back with the final details and then you can pay me if you still want the decant/s. ;-)! 😉

    SOTD!
Continuing my Byredo week, yesterday I was in Bal d’Afrique and today Oliver Peoples. There is a thread winding through all the Byredo perfumes in my collection,I’m guessing they also have something like a “Guerlinade”,or maybe a Jerome Epinette signature, although I’m not sure he’s done all the ones I have.
XO’s on a surprise last spur of true Winter tonight!

This morning I used an aging sample of Ray of Light. Wow that’s a bright top note! Then I felt something grumbling or gravelly and maybe cuminous and also the mint separated out. The mint stage was like drinking strong hot mint tea, but iced, but still as fragrant as if it were hot. That was odd and fun! The drydown belonged to a different perfume, I felt. The overall experience made me think of accidentally adding milk to a cup of tea that already has lemon in it. I’m starting to think I have become a much tougher perfume customer during my hiatus. Although… I plan on Moon Bloom again tonight. I’m so pleased to have that sample with me on brief holiday. It’s poised to become my SotVacation, evening edition.

A laid-back Wednesday for me. I thought about doing some cooking today and decided Nah, that’s what leftovers are for. The trimmers and leaf blowers echoing thru my neighborhood added to my inertia. Maybe tomorrow I will cook?

I think the gardeners like to torture us in the complex because there can’t be that much stuff to blow around. How about raking stuff up and getting rid of it instead of blowing the same stuff around each week!

I’m wearing TF Soliel Blanc today and then putting it away until after Christmas when I will immediately start craving summer perfume. I used half my travel spray this season!
I tried to guess my coworkers sotd and I guessed Jimmy Choo edp. Wrong! She said it was Miss Dior. I think it was probably the second to the last current version because it was heavy on the patchouli and I didn’t smell ambroxan. I didn’t press her for the version because I know I already sound like a weirdo. Lol.
