Monday scent of the day 8/22

Posted by Robin on 22 August 2022 94 Comments

It's Monday, National Eat A Peach Day and the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. Musical birthdays: John Lee Hooker, Claude Debussy, Tori Amos. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Prada Infusion d'Iris, probably the best "introduction to iris" fragrance? I do usually prefer the Infusion d'Iris Absolue.

Reminder: on 8/26 we're doing It's difficult, part 1...wear a fragrance that you'd recommend as a good introduction to a note that some people find difficult.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Monday, Monday.
I’m in Musc Panache again. Giving it another try.
It’s gorgeous out today! It’s supposed to be nice all week.🌞 I’ve been walking on my lunch break all summer long and finally decided last week to download an app and keep track. My dad has been doing this since 2015 and I’m impressed with the amount of miles he logs each year. Close to 500! He uses the adidas app but I downloaded MapMyWalk. Do any of you all use a walking app that you like and would recommend?

I love Map My Walk. I only use the free version, mostly to chart out new routes in my neighborhood that I might not already be familiar with. The streets around here are quite twisty and hilly, and there are loads of cul de sacs and dead-ends, but also lots of secret stairways winding about. So I like to plot out routes of pre-determined length and then follow them. Distances are so different when you walk them vs drive them. There is an area that sort of looked like a vista outlook that I had driven past dozens of times, but when I was plotting a route on MMW, I saw that it had paths I could walk along. Turns out it was a pleasure garden/walk in the very early 1900s. While no longer manicured, it still has loping, hilly paths along a creek–all within a mile of my house.

That’s so cool you discovered you can walk to the spot you’ve been interested in! And sounds like our neighborhoods are similar in that mine is also hilly and has some hidden and not so hidden stairs and little spots.

I sorta accidentally ended up with a used Apple watch, and turns out it does this if you select “outdoor walk” as an exercise activity. I have only done that once but it is nice to see your route on a map.

So probably that means my phone has always been able to do it and I didn’t know? Before this I just relied on the fitbit for the number of steps.

I’m sticking with Fitbit because I do just want to see how much I’ve walked, and I like the little reminders to get up and move.

I intended to stick with Fitbit, but admit I am now a convert to Apple Watch after just a few weeks. I can get reminders to get up and move, and thought I did not want any of the rest of it but turns out it is useful.

BUT I miss being able to see my steps in real time on the Fitbit. There is a bit of a lag on the Apple watch.

MMW is a little different in that you can log onto your account on a desktop (or phone–but a larger screen is more fun) and map out routes in advance, choosing streets/routes that have lessor or more elevation/steepness, or that are longer or more direct, etc. Then using the app on your phone you can follow the route you mapped out, or follow it more or less, and the app will record the route taken time, speed, etc. over the route you mapped. You can save your routes in a route bank, and if there are complicated routes you enjoyed, it can be fun to revisit those.

It is supposed to rain in my part of Texas for the next four days. I certainly hope it does, since we are in drought. I am wearing Ethere by Vicky Tiel, which I bought for the chamomile note, which is prominent.

Fingers crossed! Seems like we have had tons of rain in SE PA this year, but I can see that a few of our trees are looking really stressed. Do not know if that’s because we’ve had less rain than I thought, or just because of the very high temps.

Hoping for rain here, too! Spring was wet, and then it seems the faucet got turned off as soon as summer started. Some of the counties here in NJ are 5 inches below average for precip.

You smell great. EL’s website recommended SS for me when I did their quiz, lol. I finally got to test all that series. Dream Dusk was one of my favorites, but I wished there was more to it. Blushing Sands seemed to last the longest, which was a good thing. For the price, though, I think my set of minis was the way to go. There were none I disliked.

    Smelling of Primo here lol.

I didn’t know Tori and Debussy shared a b-day. That’s kind of fitting. Very cool. I like them both:).

I think this is probably my fave Tori song, though she has several good ones. I recommend albums like Choir Girl and Venus and Back..this track can be found on the dual disk of Venus and Back.

National Eat A Peach Day, you say? Well, I don’t have any peaches handy — the ones we get this far north are always rock-hard because softer ones don’t travel well — but how about I smell like one instead in CSP Vanille Peach? It’s just delightful, and much peachier than their Vanille Abricot is apricot-y. No idea why it was discontinued.

Hmm. I have a peach but it’s not quite ripe, so I don’t know if I’ll be eating a peach. However, maybe I’ll just use the peach face mask I got in my Tonymoly box a couple months ago and keep meaning to use.

Tauer Sotto la Luna Tuberose today. I’m not sure if this would be what most people would use to introduce someone to tuberose…probably not b/c of the incense. But I love it.

Another “everything is coming up roses” day with Chloe Sevigny’s Little Flower on my left arm, and Mizensir’s Epine de Rose on my right.

In public service announcements, I got an ad from Jomashop in my inbox this AM for:

Bronze Goddess, 1.7 oz, at $22.99, 66% off
She Was an Anomaly, 1.7 oz, at $67.19, 31% off

And a perfume I really would like to buy (at a hefty discount only) was advertised as:

    Darcy, 2.5 oz, at $224, 0% off !!! (wah, wah, wah. . . .)

And finally, for those who might care, international human rights laws and policies equally protect individuals from religion as well as their right to their religion, as far as any religion, belief, or practice does not violate another human right. So this UN day commemorates not only the victims of acts of violence based on religion, theirs or anyone else’s, but victims who became subject to violence for not subscribing to a religion or religious edict. Their
freedom of thought, conscience and religion, and freedom from thought, conscience and religion are equally protected (as much as any right is actually protected by the international rights treaties. . .)

I have enjoyed a lot of delicious peaches this summer. Made two pans of peach cobbler also. So so good. It’s a note I like in scents too, as long as it’s not overpowering. Why I enjoy both Allure and Gabrielle Essence. And Mitsouko.

Had a nice visit from my sister and bro-in-law last weekend. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t very nice, but they liked the fish boil we went to, and she took home some good cherry salsa and various cheeses.

Wearing Eau de Merveilles, which I think is a good intro to patchouli, which I find difficult.

I’m in my beloved Au Coeur du Désert today from my tiny cobalt blue bottle.
However, we are not in any sort of desert at the mo!

Currently at a very small (5 sites) and quiet campground on the Oregon coast. We’ve been here before and luckily I found a site here last night. My favorite spot was cordoned off because a huge tree fell on someone’s trailer. Luckily no one was hurt, but two sites have been closed by the forest service so they can “trim the trees.” Really, this wasn’t a branch, it was a whole tree! The soil is basically duff, sand, and some rocks. With a good wind, and the ground softened by rain, trees are going to come down occasionally. Anyway, the guy moved his trailer to another site and he and the forest service are now engaged in talks about “repair/replacement” of his trailer. Not my idea if fun!

    Happy Monday!

Me too! Although I feel bad for the guy because he has an older trailer. If they do reimburse him for it, he’ll never get enough to replace it, and repairs, if doable, will take months.

Now I am very curious…this is a public campground operated by the US forest service? And they pay if a tree falls on your camper?

Not sure why that surprises me but it does. I would expect it at a private campground.

(And glad he is ok, sounds like that could have been much worse)

Oh, I’m very curious too! This is what I was told by the camp host. I personally doubt the USFS will pay for anything unless it can be proven that the trees/grounds have been “neglected” and a known dangerous tree has not been attended to, which I think is impossible for the average joe to prove. RV insurance is a very grey area as well, and it’s not required by law. This is probably why he’s trying to get the forest service to pay. Not having insurance, especially for a newer trailer is living dangerously, imo. Some auto insurance policies will cover if the trailer is actually hooked to the car/truck at the time of the accident, but it will be difficult to get anyone to pay anything unless you have full “replacement” cost RV insurance, which has skyrocketed in the last couple of years. I’m actually parked in the next site now, and even though I am certainly no tree expert, I don’t see any signs of rot. This is basically one huge tree trunk that splits into three smaller trunks about 2-3 ft from the ground. It was one of these three “branches” that tore off the base trunk right at the area of attachment. These are very top heavy type of pine trees, with all the foliage at the top third of the tree. In my site, there is a similar tree, with one trunk splitting into two, and one of those two had snapped off in the recent past. I was at Cape Blanco State Park south of here one night with a real howler bashing and my site was deep in the trees. I decided to move my van in the middle of the night next to the bathroom area because it was tree free. It’s very alarming when you have that kind of weather along the coast. It’s just a raging world of wind and water, surf pounding the cliffs so hard it sounds like a bomb exploding. It was a very unnerving night. My van insurance will not cover anything related to my RV conversion, so should a tree fall on Moby’s camper top, it would be a complete loss for me. I did try to mitigate this by upping my coverage an extra 10 thousand dollars in case of total loss.

Smoothie is frozen mango and yogurt.

It was Berdoues Maasai Mara which is plummy, not peachy and I like it more every time I wear it. Tonight it’s the turn of 100Bon Myrrhe et Encens, a miracle blend, the myrrh is strong at the beginning, like root beer, then succeeded by incense, it’s bone dry and lasts well for a natural perfume.

The galbanum draws me in, but your noting the softness makes me think that’s why I’ve never fallen in love with it. What version do you have? The newest release got good reviews on Fragrantica.

I didn’t get a chance to answer the weekend poll, but today I’m wearing Daphne by L’Aromatica, which has a fantastic lemon note. The poll also made me realize I need to buy a lemon scented shower gel because the only one I can remember using is Kneipp May Chang and Lemon (a very nice one from what I recall).

As far as what’s blooming in Seattle, allo covered it well (gardenia, jasmine, Harlequin Glorybower tree), and I’ll add delightful yellow and white roses and sunflowers to the list.

I’ve had more peaches this summer than I’ve had in years and have been loving them. But I didn’t buy any peaches at the grocery yesterday, just a couple pears and a nectarine.

Finally, I think it’s a good day to listen to some Tori. It’s been too long since I have. I saw her with Alanis Morissette when they co-headlined together in 1999. It was everything that I needed and wanted!

That would have been a great show! I was so so so into Tori for so long and saw her many times, but I’ve never seen Alanis Morissette. “Scarlet’s Walk” is on my regular rotation, but whenever I shuffle songs I get Tori songs, and I’m like, how have I not listen to this in so long?

I’ve neglegted Tori also these past few months,I shall remedy that this weekend!
        But…
Stranger Things kinda ruined Kate Bush for me…I mean I love that she gets more of her totally deserved accolades decades later, but she’s always been “My Kate”,you know??Lol

Sorta Fairytale is a good one. The video for it is visually a bit odd lol. I thought Adrian Brody was cute for a while though lol. A certain charm. He was fantastic in The Pianist. Intense film. if one can handle the content, it’s one to see.

I was the dissenter as far as Alanis goes…I really didn’t care for her voice, other than Uninvited..she nailed that one. I keep thinking that was a remake of an older song but can’t think of where it may have come from.

Hmm. Started the day in EL Tuberose Gardenia. Is there such a thing as a “good introduction” to Tuberose? And if so, is this it? (My own into to this note was Fracas, which I still love but always regret wearing.) Now am in Stella, which may be a good CP candidate for rose.

Like some others on the list, my Monday had a bit of a bumpy start — I completely spaced on a morning Zoom meeting. Fortunately, it was a 1:1 and the person I was meeting with tracked me down and was gracious about my spaciness. But…embarrassing!

Ya know..I really not a fan of gardenia and sometimes the same goes for tuberose..but I like that EL one. The ONLY gardenia I would wear. Lol. Impressive that EL could make one that I like. I preferred Petite Fracas over the Fracas. Hmm i would think that EL could be an tuberose introduction..but also Mike Kors scents. He uses this note often.

Taur PHI Une Rose de Kandahar. Super interesting scent! It is softer and rounder from arms length, when i bring my nose close to my wrist I don’t like it as much. From arms length, absolutely beautiful.
I wonder what it will be like in cooler weather. I think it will be even better since it is a smidge heavy for the current heat situation and lack of AC lol.
I have a handful of Pappillon and Tauer samples that I am so excited to break out once temps dip into the high 60s. Something to look forward to!

    Song of the Day: https://youtu.be/X70VMrH3yBg

    It’s one of today’s birthday celebrants! 🎂

Waiting for a couple of packages today. No perfumes: one of them is Spooky kitty’s medicine. So, boring but important stuff.

Just about ready to thunk a bottle of Method’s foaming hand soap in the Sea Minerals scent. I’d say it’s a good intro to people who don’t care for aquatics.

SOTD = Box of Eels EdT, from the sample stash.

In Chanel n.19 EDT. I guess this could be a good introduction to iris too, but I have to admit it took me quite some time to get to love it like I do now…
Wishing you all a great week 💞

I would agree with you on No. 19 EdT and iris. I’ve always loved it, but never realized that it was an iris perfume until hanging out here at NST.

My niece is on her way to the hospital to have an emergency c-section. She has had a complicated pregnancy and I am praying baby and mom will both be healthy and fine.
Sotd is Jessica McClintock. A good introduction to lily of the Valley.

I *loved* Jessica McClintock when I was in high school. Both the dresses and the perfume.
