Tuesday scent of the day 8/16

Posted by Robin on 16 August 2022 139 Comments

It’s Tuesday and National Rollercoaster Day. Birthdays: T. E. Lawrence, Wallace Thurman, Georgette Heyer, Bill Evans and Madonna. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Guerlain Ginger Piccante, and drinking a cup of Season's Pick Jin Jun Mei from Upton, brewed with cacao husks.

Reminder: 8/19 is Coco Chanel’s birthday. We've done two Chanel projects in the past (see 2014 and 2019). If you're up for a third, wear something by Chanel, with double points for wearing No. 19. If you're not up for a third, vote with your fragrance: wear a brand that you think deserves more attention. Suggested by Dawn.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from a promotional image for a "Coco's Haute Couture Afternoon Tea" served at the Lowell hotel in NYC during Fashion Week 2019.

    Good morning.
    Sotd is Chanel Jersey.
Rollercoasters, I remember loving them. The more G force the better. Its been ages since I had been on one though.

I’m in ELdO Nombril Immense, which is the sexiest patchouli I know of, maybe my favourite Etat scent (it jostles for first place with Eau de Protection). The patchouli is slightly cleaned up but not sanitized and sterile, and it’s joined by warm spices and balsams. (Such a weird name, “gigantic bellybutton,” but apparently, and I am not fluent in French, “Il a un nombril immense” means “He’s full of himself.”)

Aha, if I ever knew it meant “he’s full of himself”, I’d forgotten. Suspect I never knew.

I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite Chanel among all the beauties in my little collection, but Sycomore is up there with Cristalle and No. 19. But then there are Paris-Deauville and Eau de Cologne, and all the Eaux and Exclusifs that I haven’t even had a chance to properly try yet …

Some years ago, Great America amusement park here in the Bay Area would open their main rollercoaster (Top Gun) half an hour before the rest of the park. I would meet a friend there at opening time, we’d ride the rollercoaster a few times, then head off for work. Fun 🙂

Chanel week! Well it’s too darn hot for anything but Les Eaux. I think I’ll do Paris-Biarritz today. Stay cool out there, folks!

That sounds like a fantastic way to start your work day! I’ve always loved rollercoasters. My mom took us three girls to Astroworld, the amusement park here in Houston, every summer; we’d be there from the opening bell to midnight when it closed. We rode the Cyclone for the thrills and the Serpent for old time’s sake. I’m sure I’ve reminisced and whinged about missing Astroworld before, so thanks for bearing with me!

J B We are so on the same page. I try to go for a walk most afternoons. I walk past dozens and dozens of houses with lavender plants reaching out over the sidewalk. I scrape the flowers off stems as I pass, and crush them in my fingers. I must make an odd picture, sniffing my hands! And every other year I buy huge bunches of dried lavender from a seller on Etsy, and fill vases around the house with the beautiful bouquets. I’ve tried all on your list except the Heretic. I inherited a bottle of Antiheros from Cazaubon, which I luuuurve. But I am having trouble finding a back-up 🙁 !

I’m in Chanel 1932, EdP on the left arm and EdT on the right. I decided to wear the samples I have on hand, especially the ones I’ve not worn in awhile and don’t have a scent memory of them.

The EdP is a good bit stronger than the EdT, for sure. Not sure I like either of them, but it’s always good to spray, sniff and play! 🙂

There is a new adorable Mama and kittens. You got me hooked on it for sure – one day I just may drive to Huntsville to adopt! (Not that there aren’t lots of kittens needing homes in my town.) So, I’m volunteering that we mix it up and have a Guerlain CP instead of a Chanel CP, if we don’t already have a Guerlain CP.

I’m in TDC’s Limon de Cordoza, which I am pretty sure I got through an NST swapmeet. Goodness knows what I gave away, but I am very happy with my end of the swap. I won’t bother to replace it when it runs out, as there are endless lemon/citrus/pith perfumes to try. But I am enjoying this one while it lasts.

Georgette Heyer! I can do this! Though I have “read” them all via audio books.

Ones I like and remember best:
        1. Frederica (hands down, my fave)
        2. Venetia
        3. The Talisman Ring (a little more Gothic than the typical GH)
        4. The Grand Sophy (this is many readers’ favorite by GH)
        5. Faro’s Daughter

The first one I ever read was False Colours, which is VERY atypical in period and language (set much earlier than her usual Regency period). I should listen again and see what I think now. I’ve just finished Arabella, which was entertaining but lacked some story elements often found in Heyer’s work that I particularly treasure.

I came across this podcast (looking up the audio-versions as those are all that I am likely to “read”) that you might enjoy. Wearing Chanel 28 La Pausa EdT. 😍

I just purchased a full bottle of Dame Perfumery Osmanthus. I have noticed for a while that the soliflores EdTs have been slowly going on sale and then not listed anymore. This morning, I saw that new 240ml body mists for $22 are listed for some of the soliflores, so I decided it was time to get the Osmanthus, just in case the soliflores body mists are replacing the EdTs. Hopefully not!

    Happy Tuesday! ☕️

Morning Perfume People! I actually got to the post office yesterday (Cabbed it because pain meds make me wacky!) and picked up my bottle of Assam of India. It was a blind buy for me, which I haven’t done in forever, but it was a positive experience. I do think anesthesia and possibly medications have my nose all wonky because I found one spritz a bit overpowering. 😬

So today I’m wearing Wild Sweet Orange hand cream by Lush and it hits the exact spot. Light and smooth, refreshing and uplifting, with all the associated childhood memories of creamsicles and begging my mom for .50 and chasing down the ice cream truck in the summers of the 70’s, everything gilded in gold from the setting sun. 🌅

I also sprung for a Lisa Eldridge lippie which I’ve been wanting for the longest time, but they’re pretty spendy. I have two of her glosses and couple eye products that I really enjoy, but really wanted something in a stick form that I won’t have to throw out before I use most of it up. So I got the Insanely Saturated formula in Skyscraper Rose, and it is breath taking! I like to wear very softly, with edges blurred and inner portion blotted. It brings my sad tired face to life! It makes me look so happy that I actually get happy! Lol. So happy I got it and I can wear that color with my entire (very limited) wardrobe because it will go with any cool tone color. Looks great with just mascara and liner, finishing off the entire look with a bit of Devil-may-care. Also goes well with my now lavender hair. Alas, it’s the little things in life that bring joy!

Here’s a link to the color for those interested. The formula is lovely and smoothing:

Flying north today and I see there are two weather watches in place at my destination: gale winds and heavy rain. But, on the bright side, the sun rises half an hour earlier up there so it will be raining heavily in daylight. I am a nervous flyer, one of those hyper vigilant types…I watch that they remember to refuel the plane, check the co-pilot’s face as he does the outside wheel check for signs of anxiety, monitor the birds flying near the runway…grip the armrests during turbulence, listen to the engines …hopeless. Will take a travel sick pill which helps, and listen to a story on my iPad. Never mind, wearing 1957 for the CP.

Wearing Venise today. Reminds me quite a bit of the original Arielle Shoshana perfume.

I never properly tested Gabrielle or Gabrielle Essence. Do folks like these and should I seek out samples? I am into jasmine right now and was thinking I should try these. I may have sampled the original in passing but don’t remember it. They have a new crazy extrait spray of Gabrielle out now…it got me thinking ehaeheh 😉

I periodically sample Gabrielle at Ulta. I think it’s very floral and very pretty. I think eventually I will end up getting it. I am not too familiar with the essence version.

I have Gabrielle Essence and it is very wearable and I prefer to the original Gabrielle. It reminds me a bit of Jour de Hermes in that it smells good, and catches your attention throughout wearing without knocking your socks off . That is, a happy, wearable, easy going, pleasant scent . I wear it more than any other Chanel, probably.

Thanks, Kanuka. I found my Jour sample last night. It’s quite lovely…I get a lot of peony. I shall see out both original and Essence…I see the Essence has some vanilla too. 😉

I too have Gabrielle Essence along with Gabrielle body creme. I really like them together. Personally, I find the Gabrielle Essence preferable to the original Gabrielle. I feel much the same as Kanuka. I don’t know if I will purchase again or not when I thunk the bottle, but it wouldn’t surprise me if I did.

Not sure that I have smelled either the OG Gabrielle or the Essence. And they are easy enough to find at the ULTA near me.

Thanks for the condolences yesterday, She-ra. Sorry to hear that you are missing your Dad so much. Hugs.

Started out in Cristalle Eau Verte. Much later in the day, ended up at the Macy’s in our mall (turns out neither they nor the Sephora carry La Mer in store) and spritzed Eau Premiere, which is lovely. The sum total of the Chanel counter was the No. 5s, the Cocos, and Allure. And no Chanel cosmetics at all; I’d hoped to sample the Vitalumiere foundation suggested over the weekend.

I rooted around and found my sample of No. 22, the Les Exclusifs edt, from a kind, vanilla-scented NST’er. Today I finally met the magic. Four sprays and I have had a wonderful rosy-aldehyde-vetiver scent bubble all day. I tried it twice before, and it always seemed so shy! *Shakes head.* Missed perfume over the weekend, due to COVID booster blues. I had a little holdover yesterday with a sore back that was either the last of the body ache symptoms or wonky-ness from sitting around all day. Neither of the first two shots bothered me, but both boosters gave me 12 hours of yuck. TMI FYI.

Isn’t it weird how differently our bodies can respond to those shots?

I got flattened by my second dose, but the first booster was a minimal reaction. Haven’t had the second booster yet.

Glad you are feeling better. I am taking my chances – I got the J&J so was technically done after that shot. I then got a J&J booster 7 months later. I was going for another booster when the J&J vaccine got the equivalent of a death knell. Let’s see what the fall brings …

I loved roller coasters as a kid. The last time I rode one was back in 2006 at Disney World. I enjoyed it then, so maybe there’s a good chance I would have fun now (I hope).

SOTD = back in Alien Aqua Chic EdT. Hoping to thunk this sample soon.

I read a comment up here and immediately went to yesterday’s posts.
A huge, tight hug for you. I’m sorry you are experiencing the anniversary of the loss of your mother. Time is an illusion and the paper work does keep us busy so much that these days can almost sneak up on you. My mom was the life of the party. One way I get through life without her is hearing stories from other people. One way.

I wasn’t going to post today, but man. I wish I did yesterday.

AnniePerfumes, don’t worry about yesterday’s not-post. It’s a melancholy occasion for sure, but it is what it is. I feel that my Mom is at peace now, and not suffering. She HATED being bedridden and dependent for so much on people towards the end.

So I found out yesterday that my neighbor passed away yesterday. I was walking to my car to go to Costco and she was just coming out of her house to water her plants. I did the neighborly thing of asking her how she is and her response was “I am hanging in there” (or its equivalent). So I just said it means she is not good and not bad and then she just blurted out that on Friday, her significant other passed away. My neighbor is now a widow for the 3rd time. The guy had been I’ll for a while but had a setback when both of them had COVID although he did not die of COVID. I suppose everyone processes things differently and I will refrain from judging (am I judging with this not judging comment?). I just offered my condolences and also said that if she needed anything to let me know. Sad times.
